Comparing 8 Skin-Tone Alcohol Marker Sets // Which is Best?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 вер 2024
- Hi friends! There have been many new alcohol marker sets released over the past couple of years. Today we will look at 8 popular sets to see how they compare. I will look at price, quality, variety/color selection, nib type, and overall value. Visit my blog for photos of all swatches and full review: thefrugalcraft...
Markers in order of appearance:
Arrtx/Touchnew: amzn.to/36OUuYo
Price: $17 for a set of 24-23 colors+1 blender (.70 cents a marker)
Nib Type: Bullet-chisel
Barrel: Round with larger squared-off end at the chisel nib
Not refillable
Includes carry bag
Thoughts: Out of all 8 sets I liked this color selection best. I like the new body of marker they changed to as the caps are easier to remove and prevents ink from trying out.
Arteza: shrsl.com/22772 *Use coupon PB15PROMO for 10% off
$30.99 for 36 set (.86 cents a marker)
Nib Type: Bullet/Chisel
Barrell Type: Triangular with a colored band at bullet end
Not refillable (but maybe in future)
Open stock available on packs of 4
Packed in plastic trays
Thoughts: This is a nice neutral set with rich colors for ski and hair. This would be an excellent set for wildlife art too.
*This is the case I put mine it and you can fit the 36 greys set in too: shrsl.com/2277i
Azure by Royal & Langnickle amzn.to/36MwapX
Price: $16.42 for 13 markers -12 colors+1 blender ($1.26 per marker)
Nib Type: Bullet/Chisel
Barrell Type: Triangular with a colored band at bullet end
Not refillable
Packed in plastic trays
Thoughts: I like the Azure line of markers but I didn't care for the selection in the complexion set. They are also hard to find and more expensive than similar options. These might be available at Walmart. I think they are mainly sold through school suppliers.
Studio 71 shrsl.com/228cb
Price: $6-$8 for a 6 pack (skintones can be found in the 48 set too for $40-$47) $1 per marker
Nib Type: Fiber Brush/chisel
Barrel: rounded triangle
Not refillable
Open stock available
Packaged in plastic boxes
Thoughts: The color selection is nice but limited as it is only 6 colors. I recommend these markers to anyone interested in trying alcohol markers but don't want to spend a lot of money. All of the colors in the skintone set are in the 48 color set and there are beautiful blending combinations in that set. The downside is that the stiff brush nibs will fray and if left idle for a long time you will get desalination (salt and pigment build up) on the tips. These are markers to try out and see if you like alcohol markers and then upgrade if you do.
Ohuhu: amzn.to/2TmDyEK
Price: Around $30 for 24 colors ($1.25 per marker)
Nib Type: Fiber Brush/chisel
Barrel: round
Not refillable
The brush nib can be reversed if it frays extending the life of the marker
Included carry bag
Thoughts: This is a very warm (yellow/orange) leaning skin-tone set. I would have liked some cooler or more neutral skin tones. This set doesn't have a really pale shade either. The quality is good for the price but I would recommend one of their assorted color sets for more options.
Art-n-Fly www.artnfly.co...
Price: TBA but likely around $25 for the 12 pack (2.08 per) and $15 for the 6 set (2.50 per)
Nib Type: Foam Rubber Brush/Chisel
Barrel: Rounded octagon
Refillable and nibs are replaceable
24 set packaged in sturdy cardboard box, 6 set n a plastic wallet
Thoughts: I love the durable and flexible brush tip on these markers. I really like the line of markers but the 12 color set has 4 very similar pale peach colors and I wish they'd replace a couple with some mid-tones. The 6 set is useful but will be replaced with the 12 set to prevent duplications across the range of colors.
Spectrum Noir Illustrator (reformulated) shrsl.com/2278v
Price $17.05 for 6 pack ($2.84 per)
Nib Type: *Foam Rubber Brush/Chisel
Barrel: Hexagon
Refillable and nibs are replaceable
Packaged in a plastic tray in a cardboard box
Thoughts: This is a good start but you will likely want more mid tones. The old version of these markers had fiber brush nibs that frayed but the new sets feature high-quality foam rubber nibs which are much more durable.
Copic Sketch: shrsl.com/22799
Price $35.10 for set of 6 ($5.85 per)
Nib Type: Foam Rubber Brush/Chisel
Barrel: oval
Refillable and nibs are replaceable
Packaged in a plastic wallet
Thoughts: Copic markers are the gold standard and the price reflects that. I generally advise against buying copics in a set because they cost the same if bought individually: shrsl.com/2279h and purchasing what you want individually ensures that you only get what you will use. That said the colors in the skin tone set are very useful.

The green shade in the Ohuhu set is actually for undertones. It actually layers really well, apparently.
Thanks, I didn't know that:)
Thanks so much for including us in your review, Lindsay! We really appreciate the feedback as well 😊
My pleasure!
I never buy any art supplies before I check in with your channel. Always reliable information
I appreciate you vote of confidence and kind words;)
I just purchased the Arteza, look forward to getting them.
Would love an updated version of this video, there’s so many new sets
Thank you for the comparison! It's hard knowing what to take a chance with when it comes to less expensive art supplies.
I bought my 8 yr old son the Ohuhu 48 set for Christmas on a lightning deal. I'm pretty happy with the markers so far. Personally I've been collecting Copics from Hobby Lobby with the 40% off coupon, 1 marker at a time for several years. I've watched youtubers draw with Copics to know which colors to get. I don't have a need for all 300 or whatever markers so it's working out great. I plan to try and refil the Ohuhus with Copic ink when the time comes. If it doesn't work I'll only have waisted a few drops of ink. :)
Thanks so much for this thoughtful review! I wasn’t sure if I would like alcohol markers but been practicing with my skin tone set and really love them. It’s nice to have them for mixed media and new way to do skin.
I watched a lot of your videos with alcohol markers before purchasing and continuing to watch to learn. Thank you Lindsay.
Exactly what I was thinking! I've also been searching for a helpful review about these markers... this is the only one I could find. Thanks!
Wow, thanks for all of your hard work! This is very helpful!
Fantastic review, thank you! Bought the Arteza set on your recommendation. Like you, I spotted those brown shades and thought they could do really well in hair, and I love the sheer range of value and warm/cool tones the set includes.
If you call Michael craft store corporate they will let you use the 60% Joann coupon on copics (when the coupon is active at joanns). I got 3 sets A,B,C for $250 each including shipping. That's only a little over $3 a piece. Just sell what you don't want. Or use the coupon on the skin set and it's way cheaper. Loooove your videos!!!!!!
Wow, that is a steal!
Lindsay,
Thank you so much for going over all the skin tone alcohol markers for us! This information is invaluable, as it will save us time and ultimately money. Who knew? Thanks again!
I have the Azure markers and love them. The best skin tone color actually comes in the seashore set. It is the skintone 6 shade. Tan 1 for skin. I was smart and bought seashore and complexion together.
Wow, thanks for doing this, I really appreciate it! I have the artxx set and ... it's weird for me. I may need to practice more, though. I have a 48 set of AspireColor, which I'm liking, but they didn't initially offer much in the way of skin tones. Thus the artxx. I'm thinking I would like to get the spectrum noir set because, for me, it's plenty. Lots of blending possibilities and refillable. Thanks again, so so so much!!!!!
Thanks for this video, Lindsay. Very thorough and full of info.
Thanks for all your hard work on this review. I have some Copics but feel the fine tip is too thick for me. I really like the new Ohuhu markers. Their fine tip is easier for me to color with. (Old eyes. Lol). Hugs
I miss the sniff test, hehehehe. Partly serious; I usually get a headache from aclohol markers. The dyebased not so much but the alcohol are so vibrant Im such a sucker for that.
Thanks Lindsay, I just love saying Ohuhu, it's so fun.😁😂👍💖💖
This helped SOOOOOO much ! Copics are outta my budget and Ohuhu isn't deliverable to my location 😩 . You deserve many more subscribers !
This is so helpful!!! I love the Arteza set. I've used those and Copics the most. And Arteza has recently started selling individual replacement markers in sets of 4 for about $8. So the ones I use the most I can actually replace when they're used up.
Awesome as always.
I feel special, I got here so early. . . . I should be in bed. But your reviews they call me!
Awwww, you're 'the bomb' Lindsay...excellent info...TFS!
Absolutely FABULOUS video!! I have the full set of Blick and some fillers of Copic in E00 and E000. They have both been refilled MANY times! I'm impatiently waiting on the big release of the Arteza. I want to say they told me today that they are releasing on 2/20? I cant remember the exact date off the top of my old brain (even from just today), but I can pull the date if someone is interested. Do you have a good "pailer" combo for the Blick Studio Brush tips? For some reason they just feel kind of more greenish based to me? Thanks for the wonderful comparison. Oh and the "Artist Loft Brush Markers" from Michael's are really cheap, usually $1 - $1.50 on sale (often), but they fray horribly! Definitely walk away from them. Thanks again! 😊
Oh no! Arteza is coming out with more markers (I'm gonna need a bigger shelf lol!) I know arteza has some lovely pale pinkish peach and pink beige tones that would be nice with the blicks. I mix all my brands together and they work great!
Aldo spectrum noir has nice pale skin tones and you can get them open stock with refills.
@@thefrugalcrafter yes, I mix my brands too. I even have all of the original Tim Holtz alcohol ink colors in markers too. They play beautifully as well. I didnt care for either of the SNoir marker types. I loathe bullet tips because they scratch like styrofoam! EEK! 🙅♀️ I'm definitely a brush tip type of gal :)
@@thefrugalcrafter UGH.... It was Ohuhu 🤦♀️
Great video!!! Thank you so much!😊💗👍🏼
Thanks for a great comparison.
Hi Lindsay, as always great review! what’s the name of the ink you mentioned for reinking? apart from the ArtnFly?
Shinhan
I love the arteza ones I am ganna purchase the ohuhu bullet nib I prefer them over the brush cause I'm not to good with my copics this was a great review thank you for this
You cant go wrong with that and they are .50 a marker!
Ty very much
huh didn't know about the salt with makers
So helpful! Thanks!!
Can you show us how to do skin with the different marker brands? I can never get a smooth blend with my TouchNew or Ohuhu markers.
Since this review was done before the Arrtx Alp markers came out, which set has a better range of colors? Arrtx Alp skin tone or the Arteza? Thanks. I appreciate all of your reviews and comparisons.
I think arteza
Do you have any examples of Images you have colored with the different skin tones to show us the different complexion or hair types possible with that brand. I love when you show examples you have colored with a set. The shells you colored with the studio 71 set is a perfect example. I know it takes you a lot of time to do All these videos. I learn so much from you. I really do appreciate your advice and tips. I have purchased many things thru your links. I love that you try to help us get the best value and best quality we Can afford.
You could search the marker names on my blog and find examples, those cards would be long gone by now tho but the pics should be there.
Great video! Though I learned so much from this video, I’m still confused lol. I have a few skin tone sets but they never have enough or the right colors to create darker skin tones. I nearly purchased the Arteza a few hours ago but took it out of my cart at the last minute. They have so many I feel like I can't go wrong with them. I have the Studio 71 set, I don't like them, I can never seem to create the skin tones I want and they keep getting that salt residue on them and drying out. I will try your remedy asap. I really love Art-N-Fly markers, I have just the pastel set, but they are so nice to work with. I can't see how they could be any better, but I don't know if that set will give me all the colors I need to create a variety of skintones. I don't know, I may get the Arteza set. Maybe later get the full Art-N- Fly set.
Did you have a smart phone? If so download the free copic app. Swatch the markers you have and see where you are missing cors, then open the copic app and look at the hand colored swatches in the E family and consider purchasing a couple browns to round out your collection. I think it would get you just what you want at a lower price.
they have a small set of azura at walmart
Cool video 👌👍 😎.
Thank you for this. I am very curious, I have been using copics for a few years. I bought a maybe 20 then added a few every months. Maybe 100 now.i would love to add in some to fill in gaps. But my budget is tighter. I prefer a refillable marker. I like a brush nib. What would your recommendation be ? How are blick brand? Or is there another brand? Outside of skin tones, I have those covered.
Blick studio brush markers for sure
Love your reviews! This one was perfect. The last week or so, I’ve been struggling with flesh tones! Hoping maybe you could the same for pencil sets? Thanks again for in depth review, I appreciate all the work you do!
I dont have any specific skintone pencil sets except for the spectrum noir one. I would suggest pulling out all of your earth tones and pastel shades and making your own using what you have.
Thanks for the info
I have a hard time with finding the right combination of color s to get the right skin tone, so needless to say I don't do people...I should say I don't focus on them. I don't have hardly any markers, due to them drying out etc. Aside from putting the caps back on..lol doyou have any suggestions on how to slow the rate of drying out etc?
Store them in plastic ziplock bags with the air squished out. Some markers are not airtight.
@@thefrugalcrafter Thank You
Interesting. I already own many copics so will keep those, but they now have the bullet tip that you can buy and use to replace one end and I chose to replace the chisel as don't care for it. By the way, this u-tube was interrupted 4 times with adds Has never happened with your u-tubs before. Any ideas on that?
Weird, I am surprised, I not specify ad breaks, I let UA-cam place them but 4 is excessive. Usually there are not many ads in january. Sorry about that.
The Azure Royal and Langnickel markers do duplicate within sets.
You are right! I forgot, I wonder why they chose those colors?
I have the studio 7 markers and you should not get them. After just a month of use the nibs are very frayed and the ink is almost out.
I want them for animal portraits
I recommend the ohuhu brush set then!
I could not help but notice that you mostly pointed out skin tones more that look like you.
You said the darker colors were good hair tones. Did you not think any of the sets had skin tones for Afro Americans or Hispanics more the brown tones and what about the Asians?
virginia lawton well, personally, I found that the darker flesh tones can be done with the base sets mostly. These sets are done for lighter skin because that’s been missing from the base sets.
Do all alcohol markers have an odor? Copics seem to have a strong odor, are there brands that have less odor?
Not all of my Copics smell strongly. But if you don't like odour never buy the Nuvo alcohol markers. It was comparable to using sharpies!
I barely ever notice any myself, I guess I'm nose blind to them.
@@thefrugalcrafterI don't usually hear anyone else mentioning that alcohol markers have a strong smell, so I think I am just sensitive to it. Alcohol markers give a unique look, I do like them :)
@@artycraftyalchemy Thanks, I will definitely avoid that brand!
FootyPaws I have spectrum noir markers and they have a strong smell.
I think they all smell..
Help! I recently purchased the Ohuhu 48ct brush set. Now I want skin tones. I keep hearing bad things about Ohuhu's skin tone set. Is there a brand you would recommend to pair with my Ohuhus? I know its a lot of user preference but Im lookig for similar price range as ohuhu and qith a fair amount of pale tones. Can anyone help me out?
Id go with Arrtix skin tone set of 36
@@thefrugalcrafter Thank you so much!
@@thefrugalcrafter I guess Ohuhu did another skin tones set. A 2.0 version.. Just saw it reviewed by Halalela Art.
I love her art!
@@thefrugalcrafter yeah she's great. The skin tones in 2.0 look much better as well. Still lacking in pale though 🤔
her voice is so high i need it lower my volume so low!
