  • Continuing in the Interior Restore Series, we need to pull the dashboard! A lot of people are scared of this job but it's actually pretty easy on a Miata -- only 9 bolts and some screws for trim hold it in. Pulling the dashboard can make other jobs easier, like wiring, heater core replacement, HVAC work, etc. This is a a step by step guide showing you how to do it.
    Tools needed:(A power screwdriver and medium/low torque impact wrench is great but not required.)
    A small flat head screw driver for prying
    A larger flat head for helping to separate connectors
    Normal size Phillips screwdriver
    Sockets - 16mm, 12mm, 10mm
    17 mm and 10 mm open end wrench
    A couple of lengths of socket extensions are handy - 6 inch is the most used
    Needle nose pliers
    #namiata #dashswap #restomod
    OGPedxing is all about DIY, gadgets, and tools.

      There are three...one on each side of the main support bar bracket near where the bracket bolts in next to the doors and a third in the middle on the right side of the center console brackets that the hvac controls and radio mount on. See my restoration video for a detailed view from the back side of the dash. ua-cam.com/video/SlsEPlOytmA/v-deo.htmlsi=2N8P3pKaMxUnB63y

      @ great I’ve got all 3 thanks, i assume the 3rd you’re referring to is for the radio? This was disconnected when i bought the car, I’ve replaced the old radio with a head unit, should i reconnect this earthing point to the new head unit before i start the car to prevent it from short circuiting again or is that unlikely if the antenna cable acts as an earthing connection?

    • @OGPedXing
      @OGPedXing  Місяць тому

      @ibraheemmonks8866 yes may be, my harness still had the radio plugs so it was earthed in the middle location as well. For a new radio install I'd recommend using that point or any bare bolt to earth near to where the radio will be. But probably will be fine either way. A bad ground will just cause it to not work well but won't cause damage to anything.

      It can be scary at first since there are a fair number of steps, but it's not bad. This was filmed almost in real time...it took about 30 minutes in a junk yard to get the other one out. Same set of (basically 3) tools.

      Some plastic jb weld works well on those clips. It may break again if you remove it a second time, but it will hold and not rattle.

    Question about the o2 sensor, my Miata keeps popping up cel for the o2 and I’ve changed the sensor twice. I might have a faulty connection so I have to check the wiring. Would I be able to check it without removing the dash? Thanks !

    • @OGPedXing
      @OGPedXing  2 роки тому

      Yes, you can get to most stuff from the engine bay side. Do you have the stock exhaust? The most common reason for o2 going bad is bad positioning in an after market exhaust...either too close to the engine which over heats it, or oriented such that condensation can form on it which cracks it over time. The other reason is running very rich which fouls it with a lot of carbon. Depending on the year, there is usually a short harness from the sensor to the main engine harness with a connector up near the firewall on the driver's corner of the valve cover. You can check the various engine grounds to make sure they are clean for this harness. That can cause the reading to be wrong and throw a cel or it can cause the o2 heater to not work causing failures (94 and above, 90 to 93 have one wire to the o2 and no heater).

    • @OGPedXing
      @OGPedXing  4 роки тому +1

      I've already got filmed the dash restore -- it's amazing how well this thing has come back to life. But after that it will be a full strip of the interior and sound/heat barriers and the new carpet. Then lots more surprises after that!

    • @dawn9340
      @dawn9340 4 роки тому

      OGPedXing I just finished putting my interior back together. I ran new large speaker wires to the headrest speakers and through to the door speakers. I’d complain but they didn’t make it all that hard. You’ve just gotta wear gloves or your fingers will be completely torn up.

    I dont understand how you got the passenger airbag out, there's no plug for it on the harness and it runs directly through the fire wall.
    The only point that even remotely looks like it disconnects is the part of the detonation cable that connects into the side of the rear cylinder

    • @OGPedXing
      @OGPedXing  2 роки тому

      That cable should lead to a blue connector, on mine it's about 8 to 10 inches long from the airbag cylinder to the connector. Once you remove the four bottom bolts holding the airbag to the dash bar, you should be able to pull it out and release the connector.

    • @xXElimin8erXx
      @xXElimin8erXx 2 роки тому

      @OGPedXing unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case on mine. It looks like the wires may have been spliced and heat shrink connected suggesting the passenger airbag was replaced at one point. I ended up just cutting the wires, ill re-splice them once the new heater core is in

    • @OGPedXing
      @OGPedXing  3 роки тому +2

      No the central box is blocked by the dash. The blower stuff on the passenger side can come out without removing the dash, although if you have AC, the lines are a little tricky to get through the firewall.

    • @OGPedXing
      @OGPedXing  4 роки тому +1

      @@stevenguzy570 it could be the gauge hood itself, one of the little clips inside that stabilize it. Also those clips are often brittle and break off and fall down and end up making noise.

    • @stevenguzy570
      @stevenguzy570 4 роки тому
