Romanovs. Tsesarevich Alexei & His spaniel Joy

- In this film footage from the Russian State Documentary Film & Photo Archive at Krasnogorsk (RGAKFD) you can see the Russian Tsesarevich Alexei Nikolaevich playing with his favourite pet spaniel Joy in 1916.
Tsarevich recounted in his own diary:
August 19, 1916 in Mogilev: “This morning had two lessons. Wrote Mama before breakfast and walked. Was eating breakfast with everyone in the tent. Afternoon was a walk along the Dnieper river. Joy is in hospital. Has worms”.
November 5th: “Since yesterday, there is no pain. Remained still in bed. Before breakfast wrote Mama. Spent the day the way I did yesterday: played the sea game and cards, listened to the French and English reading. Joy is constantly with me”.
November 9th: “Finally, I was allowed to leave the bed. Woke up early and drunk coffee at a common table. Wrote a letter to Mama. Rode to the station and back, taking Joy with me...”.
Joy was spared the execution of his master and was later rescued by soldiers of the White Army. He was eventually taken to England where he lived out his days in Windsor Castle.

Царевич часто упоминает Джоя вместе с другим своим любимцем - котом Котькой - в своем дневнике:
19 августа 1916 г. в Ставке в Могилеве: «Утром было 2 урока. До завтрака писал Мама и гулял. Завтракал со всеми в палатке. Днем была прогулка по Днепру. После обеда был в обоих садах. Джой и Пулька в лечебнице. У обоих черви».
5 ноября 1916 г.: «Со вчерашнего дня болей нет. Остаюсь пока еще в постели. ... До завтрака написал письмо Мама. День провел, как вчера: играл в морскую игру и в карты, слушал французское и английское чтение. ... Джой и Котька постоянно при мне».
9 ноября 1916 г.: «Наконец-то мне разрешено встать. Поднялся рано и пил кофе (ячменный) за общим столом. Написал письмо Мама. Катался на моторе до вокзала и обратно, захватив с собой Джоя и в первый раз Котьку. Тает и гололедица такая, что все падают наземь...».
Спаниель Джой чудом пережил ужасную расстрельную ночь в Ипатьевском доме и был позже спасен белогвардейцами. Пса в конечном итоге перевезли в Англию, где он доживал свои последние дни в королевском Виндзорском замке.

This is wonderful. One is saddened when one realizes how much The Tsarevich Alexei suffered.

Lovely tribute to Alexei, he truly was a blessed and brave soul who loved life and those around him despite his illness. Terrible what happened to him and his family. Yet I know he resides in the beautiful glory of Heaven with God and the other saints.
Alexei was a brave boy.He spent a lot time in a small wheelchair from the merciless attacks of haemophilia that frequently disabled him.. Alexei had a large playroom full of wooden and mechanical toys.A music box that played the Marsellaise,picture books,boxes of bricks and other.Among them was a large teddy bear gift from the Kaiser before the war...

Some angels are sent from Heaven to Earth for but the briefest time. I feel Alexei was such an angel. So full of the joys of innocence. Perhaps that is why his beloved spaniel was named Joy.

After the family was murdered, the dog was rescued by a British officer who then lived the rest of his days in windsor castle with the british royals.

Very strange fact: lovely dog prince Louis Charles, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette son, was spaniel, too...

Very sad. Joy saw the murder of his prince and vexame a das dog. He was saved and went to England, to Windsor Castle where he was buried after few years.
There is speculation that he & his sister didn't perish.

@@SebastianForal The DNA didn't match though. Also, Tsar Nikolas II blood was attached to a scarf in Japan & it didn't match the body's DNA. You see the Russian Orthodox Church required a Death Certificate, prior to DNA testing.
@@SebastianForalActually not, the blood of Tsar Nikolas II found on a scarf in Japan did Not match the blood of the body & Alexei lived. He was born with Poryphoria & given blood transfusions by Rasputin of a vampiric nature to try & cure him. Bullets would have been ineffective. He lived & healed, was later completely turned. He just turned 120 last month & doesn't look a day over 25. 😕 So don't talk about things you know Nothing about.
Interesting that they would even allow him a dog, with his medical condition.Teeth and claws can inflict accidental wounds. Clownin on the snow too. one false slip and fatal hematoma.

If only they had refrained from draining blood from their patients! In most of the live action films he is being treated as a normal child, not as someone who is fragile.

I like in the beginning,it looks like he is with his tutor Pierre Gilliard,but Iam not certain that it's Pierre Gilliard. He turns around and points at the camera, and starts laughing and runs away. He has a big laugh and smile on his face.Also his dog Joy.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Actually I think it's a Cocker Spaniel, just my opinion
An English Springer Spaniel. Many dog breeds have changed somewhat in appearance in the last 100 hundred years. Pure breed dogs were more natural looking as intended before World War Two -not so "tailored" & uniform in appearance as they are today.
Joy looks slightly more like a Springer spaniel to me. As cocker spaniel are a bit smaller with longer ears..how sad for Joy too. I heard when she lived in England she was a very depressed dog that just sat at the window all day.
