It is always higher inflation in the 1, 2 and 4th quarters every year. Amazingly it ALWAYS DROPS DOWN in the 3rd quarter which just happens to be the quarter that social security uses to figure the COLA. Truly amazing how it does this every year.

Gasoline is almost always lower in the 3rd quarter under the guise of summer blend is cheaper to make. Gasoline affects the cost of groceries and shipping which are three of the main items that affect inflation

I'd like to also point out that VA disability is tied to the SSI COLA increase, and doesnt get its own increase...so veterans are getting screwed out of their disability benefits in the same way as social security recipients.

The fact that the increase can barely cover most people's cell phone bill tells me everything I need to know. The people making these decisions are completely out of touch with the reality of SSI living. If they had to live on SSI for a year things would change drastically. COLA increase needs to be at least $150 a year, bare minimum. Also If Billionaires need to be taxed properly and that money should go into Social Security
My cell phone bill has barely gone up in over 15 years. I only pay about $9 per month. Maybe you should shop around.

People who rely on social security to survive and just scrape by also qualify for more free money on their EBT cards. About an extra $300 a month for food. Just another program that pays people not to work.

You know what the most frustrating thing about SS is? You pay into it your whole life and maybe if you are lucky get $2500 a month when you retire when most likely you have paid thousand and thousands into it your whole life. Only to find when you die it all goes away and your wife and kids get none of it even though you would still have a balance of the full amount you paid in.
Most recipients today get paid far more than they paid in. In fact, this is one of the reasons SS will be insolvent in a decade.
The max is 940 a month
Wife will receive spousal benefit during both their lives when she reaches FRA is she even worked a little, and will receive your full benefit if you die. Every situation is different, but it’s entirely possible to recoup your (but maybe not your employer’s half of contribution) payments into the system in 5-8 years.

Both parties know the numbers are wrong, but they allow it to continue because the real numbers are horrific. Which will make them look bad. They are letting people count on inflationary adjustments be screwed because of their EGO and party politics.
To be fair at this point being honest with the numbers would probably permanently collapse the global financial market and bankrupt most of the worlds governments. There is very little incentive to being honest for these people.

Just remember that your COLA for SS income is on your amount which is currently smaller than it should be from the previous year and so on. So everytime they do this it's done with an amount they already didn't calculate correct so it compounds not just from that year but yearly. They need to go back 20+ years and adjust with proper rates.
The COLAs are often larger than the increases that the people still working are getting on our income and on top of that when we do retire, we are looking at a very real possibility of not just having to work longer to get any benefits, but getting less than we put in.

There were a couple places I had my eye on, starting end of '20. They raised the rent on each $150.
I did a little digging into the management company. I already had suspicions bc of the low income apartment situation.

Yes! We found out that someone was getting one of our free credit reports every year. Every wage increase, the rent went up. Not just the minimum wage, but personal increases because of good jobs. With in days of a wage increase, our rent went up. We locked up our credit, and the insta-rent-hikes stopped for YEARS. Finally the manager asked us "if we were okay, how our jobs were going". They have everything they need to track your income when you give it to them!
Oh no landlord and increase it 10-20%

It's not really strange. Both markets and households need time to make adjustments to budgets. As those adjustments are made people spend less, companies cut spending, and the overall economy learns to navigate the higher prices. Once that is accomplished the "inflation" has started to reduce. Not because of the FED but because businesses and households have adjusted. But the FED will use that data to spin their agenda the best way they can. It sucks but we don't really have any other choice, as a citizen.

Right after the CPI number was released almost everything I buy or pay for went up 10% or more. It's not even funny. Some things went up around 20%.
My parents aren’t too upset because of the stock market. I can only imagine the pain seniors have that don’t have investments. I don’t think I’ll ever see SS.
Same, my parents have the luxury of SCHD and chill in their Roth and brokerage accounts. Sucks for people who solely dependent on SS, who knows if there's any left by time we retire. I'll start claiming it early despite not getting the full amount and just put the fund in my investment account and call it a day. Probably gonna end up generating more sustainable income than waiting for the SS checks.

Bottom line is plan, save and invest for your own retirement and don't plan on having any social security. If we do get it, think of it as a small bonus. Hope for the best but plan for the worst.

I like your thinking. When you have margin, in even your pension that you can invest and save, then once SSI comes, that's gravy on the meat. You can either invest it also or spend it.
I paid into FICA for 40 years and still am. I and millions have paid for our SSA retirement. Its not a bonus its paid into or you cant get it if you have not worked hour 40 credits. The younger generation will never see.

My home owners insurance jumped over 20%, my auto insurance did the same. My grocery bill continues to explode higher. Time for a change while we can still afford to live. We must hold those at the top responsible and vote accordingly.
Price of bread goes up to $3.69 because inflation went up. Next year inflation goes down but fuel goes up, the price of bread is now $3.89.

I think that if you're retired and eligible for SS then any and all medical expenses should be 100 percent free. If you've worked for 40 plus years, taking care of yourself shouldn't be a financial burden.
My former employer offers FREE lifetime family healthcare for 20 years of employment.

Increased payment will make it go insolvent.
Increased budget will require more spending leading to more inflation leading SS again not being able to keep up with inflation.
I've been a screw up my whole life, but, I've always managed to have a place to live and provide food for myself. I'm 62 now, no real means of a retirement pension. I am just starting a 4O1K, plan to work well into my seventies, then praying for an early death. I always thought there would be SOMETHING left for SSI to help, but, the politicians just don't care. We live in a crappy world where we just don't take care of the elderly. Sad.
How come SS is running out of money but folks in food stand, section 8 or obamacare never run out of money no matter who is running the country.

Also fica funds SS and SSID...but HUB (section 8), USDA (foodstands) medicare are funded by the government via taxes and printing of money (borrow money).
So the solucion will be to increase FICA...buy we also have more people in government programs than workers. Those we really need to increase our labor force so that we get more workers paying yo the FICA and other social programs.

More importantly why does the Pentagon military budget can not account for 5 to 9 trillion dollars which has happened more then once. More importantly why does the government give all our money to the Military Industrial Complex funding proxy wars that we should not be involved in that kill hundreds of thousands of people and accomplish nothing to help the world in any way. More importantly why does the government give subsidies to Walmart at the tune of 24 million dollars a day (aprox. 7.8 billion a year). The list goes on and on. Any social programs is a drop in the bucket compared to the money going into the pockets of the corporate elite.
They can't correct it as it will bankrupt the system, just as why the didn't index the tax on Social Security Retirement whereby more and more people are being taxed on their retirement which was already taxed. The inflation is almost always lowest in the 3rd quarter, which is why it was chosen.

This is why relying completely on SS is a horrible idea. I don't factor that in at all to retirement. Relying on the gov't to manage something correctly is never a good plan.

My car and home insurance were up 20% this year. 2.5% isn't nearly enough. COLA is calculated on the 3erd quarter, which is usually the Lowest. COLA should be calculated on the Highest 3 months CPI of the year.
I agree that we're getting underpaid. I had to readjust my hours and take a lower pay cut for my check. Because of social security, and I barely have enough for myself
FYI. COLA SS is also what the VA uses for disabled veterans. It use to be a flat 4% every year but President Obama cut that from the budget.

This means that instead of eating every other day I am going to have to cut it down to once every 3 days. SMH
Think of it this way, by spending your taxes on other things so there's not enough social security, the government forcing you to work menial labor during your retirement just to get by, therefore making you productive. This isn't an accident, the government doesn't believe you should be allowed to ever retire.

This is exactly the same as the FED determining what the inflation rate is (because they ALWAYS GET IT WRONG) and then basing what they pay out based on those made up numbers. The America we have today is a sad shadow of what it used to be. RIP to the American dream.
Cost of Living Index is 8.7 % higher in 2024 then 2023. Give everything to foreign Governments and illegal immigrants.

I have two HomeCare clients living on SS. They received there tiny increase but their rent is going up $30 per month. This is more than their increase in SS.

If we talk about politics, we should stop giving money to Ukraine in order to save money. If we talk about CPI calculations, not matter CPIe or CPIw, the government just miscalculated all CPI numbers, all are man 'made' to fit to politician agenda and the actual CPI is way higher than the calculated.

As a retiree you have two choices. Either fix inflation so it's no more than 1.5% or raise recalculate the COLA correctly. It should also be calculated based on year end ytd inflation number.
Social security should let nancy pelosi invest the money and she can use her insider trading tips that has made her 100’s of millions of dollars on a salary of about 250,000 a year.
