Whoa, you made it all the way down here! Thank you ♥️ Love you - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини
We're fortunate in NZ not to have hive beetle...yet...I love using my escape board, so much easier to harvest. I pop it on in the morning and by evening the super is pretty much clear of bees. It makes for a very pleasant extraction experience which I do after the bees go to bed.
Bee escape!
I'm worried about how hot it is when using the robber screens. Are those little holes enough ventilation for the bees to keep cool?
im confused.. because in august we are in a dearth and you previously stated we need to boost the population and supplement them to encourage the laying of winter bees... but we can't do that if we are breaking the brood cycle by confining the queen?
Bee escape
bee escape, I have several in the garage.
After your video introducing the rectangle queen push in cage I purchased one. Problem is my mentor told me not to use it now that the nectar flow is over. I really want to use it now to get my mite count down. This is my first year beekeeping so I'm torn between your message and not going against my mentors advice. My hive seems pretty strong, are there any downsides to caging the queen up during the dearth?
Thanks for the Information, you getting too old bro
LoL, it's a bee escape! I used to use burlap, hut it got expensive so now I use 100% cotton denim.
bee escape, I searched your videos and couldn't find the one about the smoker fuel with wrapped paper. :(
You are from United States of America, not America. Americas are two continents, North and South.
North America is made of part of Mexico. USA and Canada.
I learned a chemical free way to deal with mites is too use a drone foundation for a short time then remove it and freeze it for 2 days. After that you can replace the foundation and the mites will be dead(along with the drones) but the workers will re use any work and materials.
He said the reason is that the mites prefer drone larvae as they take longer to incubate giving the mites more time with their host.
Edit: on the subject of hydration, a trick my very poor biking younger self learned is to, mix a very small amount of salt, and an equal amount of sugar(I'm talking 1/4 ts each) with a pint of water. It gives you the water, electrolytes, and a small boost of sugar that you need, without tasting terrible, or choosing $10 a gallon. Usually I need a pint for a 10 mile ride. Don't make it taste like salt water, just a little, then enough sugar to offset the taste, at the end it should still taste like water.
Yes, I've made a ton of videos on this and teach this in my online beekeeping courses for the last 15 years. I was one of the first to promote this approach and here is a video from a year ago of me teaching about it: ua-cam.com/video/IK9zsvCbr_M/v-deo.html
Do you test every hive for mites or just spot check a few hives?
Is it okay to use a higher % isopropyl alcohol, eg 91% for testing? 😳 the test I have says 70% or use windshield washer fluid -20F. I only have 91%.
Thank you for all your teaching. You help make beekeeping enjoyable!
I love your videos! Thank you so much for all the time you put into these to help us on our bee journeys. I’ve learned sooooo much from you FOR FREE! You are so nice to do so. I just hit the Thanks button and sent you a monetary compensation. It wasn’t much but I hope it helps and I hope others find that button and contribute as well. You’re the best and I appreciate you!!
Great video David, good tips for us Beekeepers, thanks for sharing, hope you are having a great weekend 😎 Have a great day David :)
Great tips as always I'm happy to be apart of Beek squad!!!
Vera really liked this video! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the video David Have a great trip looking forward to seeing more video's 😊 And Thanks Sheri as well 😊
Thanks for the tips!! Have fun at EAS!!!
Where can I get that little bee hive? I’d love to get one for my desk
Love your videos ,started using burlap for my smoker works great .
David, you are right about the heat, yesterday was 95 degrees, warmest day in Orangeville for this season. Today is much nicer only 75 , yes 20 degrees cooler with lots of sun with a NW breeze. The bees are bringing in pollen and nectar on both hives. HAVE A GREAT WEEK AT EAS!
Good luck with your talks at EAS conference. Thanks for another great video!
Good info! Thanks David, stay cool out there
Thanks for why the old bee escape is no longer recommended. Didn't realize the small hive beetle issue is the reason. But why a week when I understand no longer than 3 days on several other types of bee escape lids.
I started using burlap after seeing your video on smoker fuel. It works very well for me and stays lit.
I've got a hive this year that's packing honey into the upper brood box instead of using the super, bees are weird sometimes lol.
I had the same thing happen. Now I have a deep packed qith honey to remove ro do brood inspection 😣
Thanks!
Thank you
I'm looking forward to southern summer...got me a flash multi
layer fully breathable bee suit so I'll be out there in just my boxers enjoying the warmth 😊
Thanks
Welcome
I’m like 2 hours north of you. I’ll swing by your shop when I head to Ohio for my va care next time.
Hey Dave, always waiting for your tips! They are so appreciated.
Little off topic...
I was spinning honey outside and had a rains storm. Some (not much) rain water got in before I could move it. Will that compromise the honey and if so can I dilute it and feed it back to the bees? Thanks for all your good advice!
Should I buy more than 1" honey be kind“ or will 1 last all winter?
That depends on how much food your bees have, how cold it gets where you are.... my bees last year went through 3 or 4 each. David used to and probably still does give you the recipe to make the stuff to go in it. So you can make more. Depending on how many hives you have, I would buy an extra one just so you can make the stuff on your own time and aren't rushed to get it back on the hive. Hope that help you!
He said he uses 4 per winter
Hi very nice programme, iam in uk just a question is it okay to make Queens now, or is it late.
Thank you.
Seen someone removing the caps from honey comb with a heat gun. What are your thoughts on using a heat gun/blow dryer to remove the caps from frames with honey?
❤
Was a little confused on your smoker method, do you wrap a little but of burlap inside the paper starter then add a tight roll of burlap, or just paper by itself to get it started then add a tightly rolled piece of burlap
(110-32)/1.8=43.3 110F=43.3C
The dearth in S.C. has been underway for a month now. Lost 2 of my colonies to robbing; robbing screens are definitely getting put on next year.
Have you heard of using Grub x outside on ground to stop beetles
How can we contact you ,need info on new hives. Thanks Mark
Would a robber screen work on a polystyrene hive David?
robber screen, does it go on and stay on or just at night? and how long?
Can breaking the queens brood cycle cause the bees to supersede her?
Winter bee kinds? Trying to figure out what is going on sale tomorrow? Help a dummy out please!!!??
I have a couple of bee hives which are on my parent's land in an inconvenient place for me to visit (which will change). I went to check them and half the brand new comb had been rejected. And, there was only drone comb.
After taking out the burr comb and frames, with only a tiny bit of comb on them, the hive is down to one brood box with 9 frames.
On two of the frames there were things little round cells in the middle of the frames and also at the top of a frame. They were not the long variety. They are round. I belive those are queen cells.
I went through every frame in the hive with my reading glasses on. And I did not find a queen bee.
I'm thinking....no one saw a bee swarm in the area. There's queen cells but no queen in sight. Then, maybe they will reject a new queen. Maybe I should combine the hive with another one. But, they just **possibly** rejected some queen bees. Would they kill the queen bee in my other hive ..
I'm thinking of either putting in a new queen or combining the hive with my other hive in that area.
I did notice drone bees with torn wings combine that with a ton of drone cells and I'd bet there is a high Mite level in there.
Ohh yeah. I dropped my brand new pair of normal vision glasses and they got stepped on beyond repair.

Do you ship winter-bee-kind to Alaska?
So wish we could buy winter b kinds in Ontario Canada
I have a question regarding robber screens. If i have robber screens on all my hives wont the robbers know how to get get into the robber screen on the hive they are trying to rob?
bee trap out
Twice..... lol
