We're fortunate in NZ not to have hive beetle...yet...I love using my escape board, so much easier to harvest. I pop it on in the morning and by evening the super is pretty much clear of bees. It makes for a very pleasant extraction experience which I do after the bees go to bed.

I'm worried about how hot it is when using the robber screens. Are those little holes enough ventilation for the bees to keep cool?

im confused.. because in august we are in a dearth and you previously stated we need to boost the population and supplement them to encourage the laying of winter bees... but we can't do that if we are breaking the brood cycle by confining the queen?

After your video introducing the rectangle queen push in cage I purchased one. Problem is my mentor told me not to use it now that the nectar flow is over. I really want to use it now to get my mite count down. This is my first year beekeeping so I'm torn between your message and not going against my mentors advice. My hive seems pretty strong, are there any downsides to caging the queen up during the dearth?

I learned a chemical free way to deal with mites is too use a drone foundation for a short time then remove it and freeze it for 2 days. After that you can replace the foundation and the mites will be dead(along with the drones) but the workers will re use any work and materials.
He said the reason is that the mites prefer drone larvae as they take longer to incubate giving the mites more time with their host.
Edit: on the subject of hydration, a trick my very poor biking younger self learned is to, mix a very small amount of salt, and an equal amount of sugar(I'm talking 1/4 ts each) with a pint of water. It gives you the water, electrolytes, and a small boost of sugar that you need, without tasting terrible, or choosing $10 a gallon. Usually I need a pint for a 10 mile ride. Don't make it taste like salt water, just a little, then enough sugar to offset the taste, at the end it should still taste like water.

Yes, I've made a ton of videos on this and teach this in my online beekeeping courses for the last 15 years. I was one of the first to promote this approach and here is a video from a year ago of me teaching about it: ua-cam.com/video/IK9zsvCbr_M/v-deo.html

David, you are right about the heat, yesterday was 95 degrees, warmest day in Orangeville for this season. Today is much nicer only 75 , yes 20 degrees cooler with lots of sun with a NW breeze. The bees are bringing in pollen and nectar on both hives. HAVE A GREAT WEEK AT EAS!

Thanks for why the old bee escape is no longer recommended. Didn't realize the small hive beetle issue is the reason. But why a week when I understand no longer than 3 days on several other types of bee escape lids.

Hey Dave, always waiting for your tips! They are so appreciated.
    Little off topic...
I was spinning honey outside and had a rains storm. Some (not much) rain water got in before I could move it. Will that compromise the honey and if so can I dilute it and feed it back to the bees? Thanks for all your good advice!

    • @chuckgross6024
      @chuckgross6024 Рік тому

That depends on how much food your bees have, how cold it gets where you are.... my bees last year went through 3 or 4 each. David used to and probably still does give you the recipe to make the stuff to go in it. So you can make more. Depending on how many hives you have, I would buy an extra one just so you can make the stuff on your own time and aren't rushed to get it back on the hive. Hope that help you!

Was a little confused on your smoker method, do you wrap a little but of burlap inside the paper starter then add a tight roll of burlap, or just paper by itself to get it started then add a tightly rolled piece of burlap

I have a couple of bee hives which are on my parent's land in an inconvenient place for me to visit (which will change). I went to check them and half the brand new comb had been rejected. And, there was only drone comb.
After taking out the burr comb and frames, with only a tiny bit of comb on them, the hive is down to one brood box with 9 frames.
On two of the frames there were things little round cells in the middle of the frames and also at the top of a frame. They were not the long variety. They are round. I belive those are queen cells.
I went through every frame in the hive with my reading glasses on. And I did not find a queen bee.
I'm thinking....no one saw a bee swarm in the area. There's queen cells but no queen in sight. Then, maybe they will reject a new queen. Maybe I should combine the hive with another one. But, they just **possibly** rejected some queen bees. Would they kill the queen bee in my other hive ..
I'm thinking of either putting in a new queen or combining the hive with my other hive in that area.
I did notice drone bees with torn wings combine that with a ton of drone cells and I'd bet there is a high Mite level in there.
Ohh yeah. I dropped my brand new pair of normal vision glasses and they got stepped on beyond repair.
