I resent people saying Martin had no theme or plot. It was a love story. The show revolved around Gina and Martin's love story. That's why it fell apart so bad when all of the off camera drama unfolded. The Fresh Prince just had more range and better writers.
I love how Mel Mitch is so young and she knows her comedy history so well.❤️ She’s younger than me and I would say some of Def Comedy Jam was before my time 🥴 but she knows because she’s serious about what she does. Love that!
1:00:25 “WE AIN’T DOOOOooooonnnneeeee…yeAaahh!!!” 😂😂😂😂😂 Didn’t know that I needed this joke! This sums up my whole church experience as a kid playing with choirs at concerts! LOLLLLLL
OMG!! That last 20 minutes of travel stories was Beyond HILARIOUS! 😂 Mel and Tony had me CRIIINE! 🤣🤣💀 as of 12/7/23...I have watched this wayy TOO MANY times! 😂
The Fresh Prince all day. Impact on the culture, a more positive and diverse representation of black people, iconic episodes and characters, all the relevant cultural references and cameos of stars, iconic theme song, HILARIOUS and creative all-around premise of the show, creative and hilarious running gags, range of emotions represented without being overly, melodramatic i.e. police brutality, racism, classicism, sexism, ageism, guns, drugs, etc. They had black men and women of all shades represented whether they were full-time cast or guest stars. They presented the full spectrum of the black experience. We always think of the episode where Will and Carlton went to jail, but there were other episodes that represented racism and represented the roots of black people as well. They also tackled the conundrums within the black community on a pretty regular basis like the episode where Carlton wasn't black enough for the sorority, the dynamics of Will being cool at the predominantly white school, Uncle Phil not entirely wanting to represent where he came from in his speech, Phil and Vivian's fugitive friend who had a prison record for political activism, and the running gag of Will's friend, Jazz. It showed the different dynamics within the black community. To me, it's not even close. It's The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
The older I get the more I love the Uncle Phil stuff. James Avery took a “sitcom dad” and made him a far more complex character than the show might have demanded.
@@aidankeohane3370 He really did! A lot of TV sitcoms make the dad very goofy or super stern and harsh with little to no connection to their children, but Uncle Phil was a multidimensional man. He was stern, but he had personality, and he knew how to give the kids a hug when they needed it. He was a protector of his family, and he was a good husband to Vivian. I even liked when they had the ark of episodes of the conflict between he and Vivian. It showed the tug of war that he had between his ambition and his wife. I also love how overtime, he really grew to actually like Will. He always loved him, but he did not always like him.
Yeah…that’s Martin. Impact on culture, iconic episodes and characters, hilarious, cameos, theme song, creative and running gags. Shows were different, but better? Nah. Fresh Prince’s iconic episodes was Will’s dad and Will being shot. After that…not so much.
I liked Martin a little more. Both were great shows and very different so outside of them being black I don’t think had anything in common. Fresh prince focused more on family so it appeal to more younger people. Martin appealed to older crowd.
Both shows kinda dipped at one point or another. Personally, I think the first what 2 or 3 seasons when the original Aunt Viv was on the series were peak Fresh Prince! As soon as we had light skinned Aunt Viv & Nikki magically aging up like 6 years between seasons along with Will & Carlton going to college, etc. the show really wasn't hitting like it used to. Yes, there were some great episodes in the backhalf of the series but nothing like when it first started. Martin's final season felt so off due to the BTS drama between Martin and Tisha so never seeing that iconic couple onscreen together after getting married was felt so wrong. I love both shows. However, I can't say which one I like better. You have Martin which is a bit more episodic but hilarious while Fresh Prince had a great story with iconic moments/characters along the way. Both are pillars in the history of black television.
Martin has ironic episodes. Everyone always point out when Tommy Davidson as Varnell Hill. And Martin taking a scene from New Jack City as he accused his friends of taking his CD player lol
Blue streak!!🔥 28:38 They forgot to mention it blue streak was a good Martin Lawrence movie I’m dancing in front of the bank with that outfit on with hilarious
Thank you, Mel. Martin has not been the same. We saw it in BB3 and in their media run for the movie. You can really see it in the Breakfast Club interview.
14:44 that last scene with the big head gave me nightmares when i saw it as a kid, but it is pretty hilarious when i watch it back now. Also the vacation one about the non-puppy demon… i was not amused by the glowing eyed creature biting pam on the neck. But now, i cry laughing!
The Martin show represented the culture in a different way. From almost a cool street side. Besides all the funny, all the hip hop acts that guest appeared, the fashion, the representation of a love, relationships, and friendships. It’s Martin for me all day, every day. Thursday night lineup. Martin, Living Single and New York Undercover. #Martin #TheBestToEverDoIt
I think the biggest thing that Fresh Prince had going for it was the late great James Avery. Cause James could do comedy with the best of them but he could also transition into the serious moments very easily. Martin, as great as it was, didn’t have a character like Uncle Phil.
Whoever did the first advertisement transitions is funny😂 just as Kevin start talking about how blown up Martin head was, BAM Kevins big ass head pop up 😂
Fresh Prince was a better show. Martin had more pound for pound laughs. Fresh Prince had more than 5 shows with lessons. The Carlton drug episode, the Carlton gun episode, the time Will and Carlton got pulled over and put it jail, the body shaming episode with Queen Latifah, the Black identity episode when Carlton was rejected by the black frat and when he tried to change his persona to stay in the hood with Jazz, and obviously the Dad episode with Will. Even the pilot had a lesson…Uncle Phil was judging Will based on how he looked, talked and where he was from but at the end of the episode Will started playing classical music on the piano which made Uncle Phil look at him differently; teaching people to not judge a book by its cover. The Fresh Prince just had more depth, was better written but still had laughs while Martin was a tour de force of comedy by Martin and the cast
@@jeter274 I think they were moreso responding to what Kev said about FP only having 5 episodes that dealt with life lessons, hence why the got to naming other episodes that dealt with life lessons. Martin is funny, but for me, FP had more realistic humor imo.
As a Gen Xer who saw both shows in real time, many of my group would probably say Martin. As a parent of Gen Z and AA young people in their early 20s and mid-teens, I have the chance to view these things thru them. Martin did not age well. I expected that my 16y old daughter would roll her eyes and walk away. What I did not expect, was for a room full of black, male 20-somethings to be like, "what is this problematic, corny ish, you want us to watch." They got that it was slaptick, etc, they are Chapelle Show and Key & Pelle watchers. It was just something about "Martin" they could not roll with. I pulled the main episodes everybody loves, but a lot of those were references to other things like New Jack City and the Arsenio Hall Show. As for the "Fresh Prince," both my son and daughter watched reruns with no issue once they were at an age where it was interesting for them (they are 8y apart). In fairness, I think watching someone they currently like do something fun and relatable when he was younger, plays a part in it. 🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️
I MAY be biased because fresh prince is my favorite show but I have to agree Martin did not age well. I tried to watch it recently and didn’t get past season 1
Y'all just too "woke" 😒👎🏾 That show STILL hilarious, your kids are just inundated with this "PC at all time, don't offend nobody or you should die" propaganda.
@chantayk Aging well is also reflected in the reactions of people of subsequent generations. I specifically said I watched in real time. The brunt of my discussion was about Gen Z/AA.
Yes!! Another great installment from this panel. Knowing that Mel is not of age to remember all of this comedic history AND that she is willing to “jump out the window” and hold her own with more senior male comedians that she clearly respects speaks volumes about not only her character, but also of her generation. Separately, she’s right to compare Bernie Mac and Robin Harris based on how they were positioned and the material that was pushing them into the mainstream. The Bebe’s Kids bit and “Milk and Cookies” were similar and poked fun at the same premise, bad moms producing bad kids that the narrator has to manage with hilarious results. Well done Mel!
Enemy of the state and Eagle eye (Shia) were the same movie type/story line. Phenomenal movies & a showing of what’s to come before it actually hit the streets everywhere.
Maybe because I’m a die hard Fresh Prince fan, but I never understood the “Fresh Prince is better but Martin is FUNNIER” narrative…. Fresh Prince is super funny!! When Hilary got blackmailed by Will & Carlton, when they tricked Geoffrey into thinking he won the lottery, Ashley getting bullied, earthquake episode with Gina, Carlton sliding across the floor, silly rabbit tricks are for kids, etce etc maan Fresh Prince is hilarious!!
Y’all not bout to play Martin like it’s only funny and Fresh Prince had so much depth. Martin was one of the only shows that showed a brother that didn’t come from money or had a rich family member to save him. Worked on radio, lost his job, went to tv, loyal to the gf he married, they mixed a lot in the laughs. I still watch the first 4 seasons religiously
Bruh...when Martin plays Bob from Accounting! How that man came in when the stripper was at Gina's bachelorette party! With the acid washed Jean's and snakeskin boots! 😂😂😂😂
Fresh prince was better all around. Martin gave you nonstop laughing but the serious scenes don’t hit. Fresh prince had multiple great message scenes plus funny. Also Martin is sketch comedy, it’s more like a variety show the first 2 seasons then it grew with the story line later.
Martin made me laugh way harder and has more classic moments imo that's my pick. But Fresh Prince is the better show in terms of story, character development, emotion, etc.
