Have you’ve been stuck in the same position for years and not being recognized for your hard work? Which of the three reasons for not getting promoted resonate with you?
Hi Linda, i just love your videos, knowledge level and personality. Could you please share possible cause(s) of not having the desired pay package though you are already at the top and holding key position? For instance, Tim Cook (Apple CEO) isn't enjoying highest pay package though he is head of the company...
What I have done when passed over for promotions is take all the skills and experience those tasks and projects gave me and went to a competitor for a better title and lots more money.
Favoritism is a big part at play. If after 2 years, no opportunity for growth & if you see others with less experience or with less seniority being promoted then it's your sign to seek employment elsewhere unless if you who are the one favored. "KNOW YOUR SELF-WORTH" Best to work for yourself & have different income streams. No job will look after you if you become sick or need some time off for yourself. Trust me, the best way to alienate yourself from work is to ask time off for yourself.
I work for a large company. Favoritism plays a good part in promotions. So much that someone hired after me that had only a month at the company was promoted. I was lied to by the hub manager as well. I know I have been an asset to the company as I am active in committees, help others , and have good work performance. This other person has a friend that’s a supervisor which is why she was promoted first I believe.

I believe I have been given the “Dangling Carrot”. My bosses boss listed me as the top 40 employees out of 2000 employees to run the company in the future 5 yrs ago. Now he is retiring and I haven’t been promoted. I’ve done most everything in your video in my 10 + years at the company. He told me to keep the faith...not sure what that means but I don’t want to hold back and wait another 5 years
I have always found 3 things to be essential to moving up at different jobs I've had over the years. #1 Initiative #2 Persistence #3 Assertiveness As the saying goes, "you reap what you sew"
What Linda said here is true. I worked hard for my last job for 3 years, pretty much 13 hours a day. Worked many nights and weekends. Everyone in the company knows I worked hard and they always have task for me to do and giving last min requests because they know I can do it. I been told I worked like a 2 people job but in truth, in order to do that, I had to work that many hours. But every year, I never got the promotion. So I decided to leave and moved on to another company which I am currently at. But after listening to these beliefs the problem I have will continue if I don't change and I'll take this tip. Thanks Linda
I just had to go through the same. It's very disheartening. Did your boss not try to negotiate or have you to stick to the position somehow before you left?
Yes I'm in the same situation. I get too much tasks and they always say I'm doing well. They give me more tasks and they believe that I can finish it on time. I'm too tired and I feel so scared of working.
I know this sounds horrible but the way I see it is like this….I never over exert myself in my job. I do what expected of me and occasionally I’ll do more. Not because I can’t or because I don’t want to but because I too used to be used this way. Now I have boundaries and choose when I want to lift my game. Been in my current job for four months already had an interview for a promotion last week.
What if you dont do others work for free, ask for what you want, ask boss for promotion and still he denies you or calls you by name - bragging, immature.... then what to do? I have learnt this hard way... I have learned that I should keep not only my boss informed but keep everyone in management and supervisor roles informed and keep my work online for all to see and keep all documented.
Sadly, my work place used to have opportunities to grow. Now they promote those who are from the boss' country or church. Much of the negotiation occurs at their church and cultural BBQs.
I’ve been at the same place for five years and have been trying to get promoted but people who have been there less than me keep passing me up. It’s very frustrating since everyone keeps telling me I’m a hard worker. I’m just starting to realize that hard work alone won’t get the promotion, so I’m not going to bend over backwards for this place anymore. It’s not worth it. Your advice is true.
I just found your channel and enjoy watching your videos! Although I think I’m on a good career path, there is always room for improvement 😉 I’m sold to subscribe 😂 Greetings from Switzerland ❤️
i find the ones promoted fast are the ones who have their boss take them under their wing. if you have to ask for a promotion chances are you won't get it unless you go out and get a better offer lined up. and even then chances are good if your company keeps you they are gonna harbor resentment for being extorted.
Hi Linda, Could you pls make a video for people who have a young inexperience manager who doesnt deligate and doesnt let team to expose to senior managers despite knowing that the employee has experience in certain things and is able to lead.
Whatever you saying you are right that’s the way supposed to be. The reality depends what kind of business you are most places you have to be kiss ass. Unless you are specialists they have lots of things to learn from you. Once you teach them next day you will be out for sure.
how can i keep from getting promoted to a managerial position? i want to stay as my current position as an Instructor at a tutoring center, and i do not want to be promoted to a managerial type position. my supervisor wants to promote me, but i don't want to. how should i let them know i don't want to get promoted without seeming like i don't want responsibility or that I'm not grateful for the opportunity?
Hi Nicole, it is all about the way you will communicate that your manager. To start with place yourself in their shoes and pick up words that you'd like to hear if the situation would be flipped. I'd recommend to express your gratitude for considering you for the role and that it means a lot to you. Then I'd explain what you are currently enjoying at your job and how does that make you feel and lead it to how you perceive that would change if you took up the new role and where it would not according to you make you perform or contribute how you imagine to the role/environment you are at. Then reassure them/ or ask them how could you be of assistance whilst they are looking for someone else to fill the role. Does that help?
Someone who flirts constantly with the boss got promoted. Not competent, not doing much but know how to use her gender to gain favour. No one dared saying anything to the boss. This kind of thing does happen.
What i don’t understand is why do you have to be liked working isn’t about making friends with everyone and playing the fool it’s about being the best person doing that job possible in order to be the right person for that promotion
I am sorry Linda practical world doesnt work like this .. let me tell my story, I am the best Excel user in amongst 50 Excel users & those 50 users have more than 70 years of experience at Excel let alone professional certification and tons of job experience too. I can do things at Excel which no other person can in our department. And guess what im given average increments and no promotions i have network which starts from highest grade to lowest grade not in 1 deptt rather in 2 or three departments, im so proficient at work people ask me to train their deptt and you know who is given better increment person who does personal work of bosses like currency exchange, security trading advice etc etc ... Moral of the story dont show extra performance at work! by the way i have more than 4,000 hours of experience at data modelling!
Yep, sometimes you are so good at your position that they want you to stay at your level. So, I suggest you to ask for a promotion with arguments then if it doesn't work, quit.

Good tips but it is just as important to know when to walk away and seek a better opportunity elsewhere.

Thanks for the great points about! Impact is so huge, and it's where I see so many people get off track.
Great advice! But the thing is that it’s easier said than done and lots of time it depends on company culture and where you are at in your career.
Linda, thank you for sharing these methods for getting unstuck and get promoted. I love your idea of IDW! This is so clever.
Linda you're a beautiful teacher and your videos are fantastic
Great tips! Those beliefs sound so familiar - not only family members, but lots of older colleagues have the same beliefs.
What about coworkers who don't do anything? Even when I show them they still won't do anything. Now I say, you do it.
lol. tell boss and get them fired!
Mami Burger That is ok because I found another job. I can only control myself!
I've just discovered your channel today and you are so inspirational! Your videos are so helpful. I can relate to so many of them.
Sadly, my work place used to have opportunities to grow. Now they promote those who are from the boss' country or church. Much of the negotiation occurs at their church and cultural BBQs.
Go to another company. Phuk em. Btw I'm an atheist, so I don't do church and promotions don't really appeal to me either.

Five years with that being dangled in front of you?? You have to move on. They’re treating you like a doormat and probably think you are.

i liked your point about being able to articulate your contributions with metrics. So important!
Don't bother asking for a raise, just start looking for a job.
hi linda you should do a video on internship preparation as far as resume, and prep for the internship interview
I really love your UA-cam videos. New fan. They are so well explained and on point! 😊

Brilliant!
Translation: Simply politics as usual. We the people must realized that favoritism, nepotism and all the other isms.
Excellent 👍🏼
I need a great marketing manager
I've had people get promoted by being spys. Usually I leave those places. These are good suggestions.

correct answer is to leave the fucking toxic environment and get a new job ASAP
Thanks for the video Linda, you're beautiful as ever!!!
Wow it is like you know me. Made all these mistakes.
Im introvert. This is me.
I usually just throw a kiddie tantrum and threaten to quit.
Totally nonsense!
If I have your hair, I am sure I will get promoted
