    If you are into hacking on a level of building your own EV it is possible to actually charge a gen 1 Nissan Leaf and discharged it at the same time. I've done it, one summer I used my Nissan Leaf in the driveway as a stationary Powerwall for peak shaving/load shifting, it requires opening up the inverter cover and tying into the high voltage bus Which are the large copper busbars on the top of the inverter stack, it's easy to identify because of the Chademo cables coming up to it. You also have to tie down the lid switch so the car believes the lid is on otherwise it wont power up. There are two ways to activate the high-voltage buss, one is to turn the car on, the other is to plug the car in and charge it, now this seems like it doesn't make a lot of sense but if you use a level 1 charger, a good one that's adjustable like an OpenEVSE and turn it down to 6 amps then you're only sending a small amount and can do it remotely without having to manually go out to the car everyday to turn the car on and later off. I did find I was getting Ground Isolation DTC in the Leaf (checked and reset with Leaf Spy PRO). The solution was to lift the ground on the EVSE as the Inverter I used grounds the high voltage DC input. For the inverter I used a Danfoss DLX 4.4 high voltage string inverter, they're typically used for businesses who do a lot more panels in series than on a house and it's designed to handle 200-500v DC, so the 400 V from the battery pack was ideal. It also has low voltage shutdown that steps in before the Leaf pack gets too low and damaged. This is not a science project for amateurs and there's some serious danger involved because of the voltages present. Don't try this unless you understand the risk to yourself and equipment. It wouldn't be hard to add a permanent port to the car to do export, a roll your own DIY V2G system. For those experimenters out there I thought I would share this.

    I'd put the jumper between pins 1 and 7 inside the plug itself, for safety reasons.
    That way should the long signal cable get damaged in some way, it's not going to disable the proximity signal.

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  2 роки тому +5

      True. That sounds like a good idea. On J1772 plugs, what makes the proximity pin work is entirely in the handle.

    Great project thinking of using it myself, get solar grids and use the car as an electric reservoir, keep up the great work, by the way my car get similar mileage / charge as yours

    hello,
    you should create a combo adapter ccs to chademo, this will allow nissan leaf to be able to recharge via ccs (the chademo will disappear in Europe)

    HI Benjamin, I am working on V2H project with Nissan Leaf 2019. I bought the Chademo adapter and build my DC to AC inverter. However, I don't know how to configure Chademo pins to get DC voltage out of the battery. What's the configuration? Please let me know as soon as you can. Thank you. Waiting for your response.

    Would love to do that with my LEAF when I get my own property... At the end of the day my electric doesn't cost much over a year so is it worth it? Good emergency backup if your power goes off for more than a day but that has not happened to me yet.

    Hey Ben, nice project and keen to do a similar idea here in Oz , wondering if you have a Chademo adapter for your Tesla to try that when you are confident that it works on the iMiev..?

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  2 роки тому

      No, sorry, I don't have a Tesla.
      The Tesla has a LOT of software and sensing controls. The other issue is that since standard and DC Fast Charging are both done through the same port on a Tesla, there is software that controls contactors internal to the car/pack which would need to be hacked.
      Even if that was done, I'm sure the Tesla would just error out if it sensed negative current at the charge port!
      The advantage of the iMiEV is that it's such a simple car!

      @@BenjaminNelsonX Agreed, I have a 20kw Chademo charger here that works on my S85 and looking to reverse engineer the protocol here because the same thing should be possible if we can close the contractors to the port...then current should flow either way...I see your point on current sense however...happy to keep in touch?

    question ? like that ford ranger you have. why cant you put solar panels as a cover for the bed to help charge it while its driving. and just setting outside in the sun. wouldn't that give you extra range. or will it shut it down. even if you dont hook up number 7 plug.

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  2 роки тому

      You COULD put solar panels on an electric vehicle to give it some more range, it's mostly that it wouldn't be practical. You would need a very large area, and enough solar panels in series to get to a high enough voltage to charge the battery. You would also have very bad wind resistance due to the panels.
      It IS practical on something like an electric golf cart. Since they are typically 48V, having two 30V solar panels on the roof gives you an appropriate voltage for charging the battery while shading the occupants.
      Solar panels permanently mounted on a garage or carport are ideal for electric vehicles.

    What's the deal with the flashing tire pressure warning light?

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  2 роки тому +3

      The car uses Tire Pressure Sensors, but it's winter, so I have my snow tires on. Those tires are on plain steel rims WITHOUT the sensors. The tire light flashes for a bit right after turning the car on, but then the light turns steady.
      Just a little annoying for shooting videos like this!
