What I like most about these videos, aside from the sheer beauty of the cars, is the way Jay smiles and chuckles when discussing some of the overbuilt and overly robust features of his older vehicles. His humor and style is what made his yeas on the Tonight Show so enjoyable. Please keep up the great work, and thank you for "opening up" your garage to the public.
You kept mentioning Jeremy Clarkson, and that got me thinking. You were on Top Gear and it was hysterical. So why don't you have Jeremy come over and you two do what you two do best, which is drive cars and make me laugh?
I went for work experience at Peterson engineering where they built this car, I met Bob and saw everything that was going on there. Amazing to see the cars he makes gets driven rather than parked and looked at from time to time. Thanks for the great video.
Some interesting points about this engine. Rolls Royce built big to go racing, along with SuperMarine in the '30s, to try and win the Schnieder Trophy. The racing engine was developed into a production engine, the Merlin. The Merlin was built to be supercharged, at quite high levels of boost. At the beginning of WW2 they made about a thousand hp. By the end, they made well over two thousand. The Merlin had double overhead cams and 4 valves. The cams were driven by shafts. There was no drive chain in the motor, nor chain of gears. The exhaust valves got hot and burned out, so they tried making them hollow and filling the shaft with sodium. That made the valve guides very hot, so they wore out very quickly. Production Merlins featured screw-in valve guides, because they'd have to be changed quite often. Water injection, water + methanol injection, and nitrous oxide were all used on this engine, in combat. After the war, some of these ideas found their way into car and bike engines for drag racing and similar, but the original 'fully worked' engine in the world, straight out of the factory, was the Merlin. Oh, and the constant velocity carb we all had on our bikes in the '80s? Came from the SU car carby, which in turn came from the constant velocity carb used on the Merlin. An awful lot of 'go fast' stuff, showed up first on this engine.
I've been watching some (30-40) of Jay's broadcasts for the last six months, with much joy, especially the ones about Packards. (My father had one 1938 stright six, when I was a kid, and my neighbor is chairman of the Finnish Packard Association and has a lot of them, that I'm drooling around from time to time) and I never really had reason to make a comment before. I do prefer the oldies, and can take some modifications with a smile, when reasonable to make them possible to drive in modern traffic. I can swallow a Rolls with a Merlin engine, even a Bentley with one, and some other gadgets, but now you've crossed a line! You simply can't put an automatic transmission into a 1930 Bentley! That's just sacrilege! And the wheezing sound of the car; well, I say like Nanny in Gone with the wind: "It aint fitt'n!"
Mzaphod Bibl ?? I sure don't know anywhere near what he knows, that's what's called "learning" you find someone who knows more than you do and you LEARN from them, that's how it usually works anyway..
You're wright. You can enjoy the car without knowing about its history. I don't think he likes it because of its speed, power, comfort or wind in his hair though.
Mzaphod Bibl Exactly, I think what he loves about them is their diversity, they all have something special about them, some it's their huge size while others it's their power or rarity etc, he's a collector, he's just a lucky one with loads of money to feed his expensive hobby, I'd probably collect diamonds if I had the cash :)
For how low RPM that is on road, I would say it probably doesn't use that much gas. If he were to stomp it, it would probably start sucking like a damn sump pump.
The Merlin is known to use 1-2 gallons of fuel a minute just idling, going down the road at the speeds he's cruising at, he's getting gallons per mile fuel economy.

Jay Leno I really really admire your passion and respect for craftsmanship. The love for all vehicles and motorcycles is superb. Keep these videos coming.
This can be YOURS for a trifling $800K. As The Daily Mail explains, "the car was hand-built by Bob Petersen Engineering. The chassis comes from a 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II, while the coachwork was designed to give the feel of a pre-war Bentley. Since the Merlin V-12 is a thirsty beast, delivering just three mpg, the Meteor is fitted with a 400-liter (105 gallon) fuel tank.... Its capable of 160mph." I want to imaging some Tuner in his rice cooker on the interstate having this monster loom up behind him and then being blasted by at speed by this visage of some Edwardian steampunk nightmare, then pulling his car over and with tears, walking away from his now emasculated cooker.
1,647 cubic inches! I guess this car is the exclamation point on the statement, "there's no replacement for displacement "!! Thanks for sharing this piece of history! The P51 was an amazing aircraft. My father had a friend back in the early 70s that had a P51, the "Miss Coronado" and he would fly airshows where he would go in to a dive at full throttle pull up about 75 feet above the crowd, like he was doing a strafing run! The sound that Merlin made that low at 400 mph was something you'll never forget!
LMacNeill And remember that when Rolls-Royce couldn't supply the war demand with hand built Merlins, Packard in Detroit stepped in, re-worked the british left handed blueprints to American right handed prints; changed all the Whitworth nuts and bolts to SAE, and turned out 75,000 mass produced Merlins that really helped win the war in the Spitfire, Hurricane, Lancaster bomber, and our Mustang. I have driven 3 Packards; a 53, 49, and 47. All great smooth straight 8 engines, very understressed. Especially the huge one in the 47 Custom Super Clipper. Biggest horsepower available in America that year-165. The crank had 9 main bearings, etc.
When Rolls Royce and Ford of britain had already changed the Merlin for mass production, Packard got the modified engine and Rolls Royce made more of them than the 55,000 total that Packard put together. Rolls Royce not only made more of them, they did all the design and development and made all the Griffon engines and they made jet engines, Packard was small time. The Rolls Royce Merlin assembled by Packard went into a minority of the planes you mention. Real Rolls Royce engines went into more of them and many other planes too. 165 hp in 1947 sounds rather pathetic for such a big engine, no wonder American cars were so slow then, just as well they had brakes that hardly worked and they could not go round corners.
Barrie - It's always sad how you brits get so smug and snobby about such things.. you would think you people were compensating for something with that smugness.

Jay, I’m working on my 74 MGB GT and take a break for a snack. I decide to watch your vids as usual. I just finished watching this Bentley and how am I supposed to go back to work on my beloved MGB GT? Thank you for another great vid and great detail info about the car. Because I have your persistence, less your income, and with the help of Moss Motors I’ll continue to complete my restoration because every car deserves it...well almost every car! Thank you to your support staff, with you they make it happen!
Technically it's a Meteor engine which was designed for use in tanks so it's a substantially de-tuned, naturally aspirated Merlin. Only disappointing thing about this car, and indeed all Meteor-engined vehicles is they don't sound very exciting - all you hear is whine of the timing gears and the transmission.
I remember reading a book at school called speed six. Ever since then I've loved these cars(works of art), but this beauty combines my love of Bentleys and Merlin engines!...Look after her Jay.....
It's a 27 litre engine. 27 litres is 7 u.s gallons. It was initially used in WWII era British tanks. One of the later ones being the Centurion Tank. You can probably imagine that it uses a lot of fuel.
I've watched this a bunch of times.....never gets old.....have as much fun as possible in that massive machine.....such a smooth running car.....looks beautiful in that dark green color.....👍👍
look at those cars.. Jay seems to love each and every single bolt on each of those old cars.. I bet he enjoys these cars more than he ever enjoyed television. Have fun Jay!!
the engineering and attention to detail on cars like this is incredible. a modern production car is made purely for the sake of profit, with no love, or real craftsmanship. new cars average what 20- $30,000, and you are lucky if they are worth ten percent of that in ten years time. If I am going to spend that kind of money on a car, I expect a kind of quality that just isn't available with modern production. When the only goal that a company has is profit, the products are inferior, the materials are inferior, and there is little or no quality in production. This world needs more craftsman, tinkerers, artists, and dreamers, and less...
if your vehicles lose 90% of their value in 10 years, you need to quit buying kias or daewoos. I bought a new Ford Ranger in 2004 for $16K. it has a little less than 100K miles on it. I could probably sell it to a dozen people tomorrow for $6K.
Men in sheds, that's Great Britain... As Jay once quoted, 'the British can build you one of anything'... The pinnacle of motorsport is Formula 1 and the majority of teams have always been based in England. Ferrari even seriously considered moving it's F1 team to England at one time.
You re kiling me softly .. I have filmed a Bentley 4/5 liter in germany ,you can see it between my videos...a piece of gold ,but this one is absolute boombastic... Thank you Mr Leno...great vid for us
You should know that the original Bond car was NOT an Aston Martin, but originally was a 1930 race Bentley. Obviously not with this 27 litre Roll's-Merlin engine, I don't know how large it was, but Ian Fleming was of course from the higher classes and he had heard of the race successes that Bentley had enjoyed, and so I believe he bought one. He may of had a friend who had one who lent him it first, but anyway this was the car that Bond drove in the earlier novels. Casino Royal, Goldfinger may have been the books you should read to find the truth. This 27 litre Roll's-Merlin is probably the best engine for the job though. Thank you Jay for showing us mere mortals the cars we could only aspire to get close to. I am going to try to buy a Jag XKSS (copy) in the next few weeks. Wish me luck, and thank you once more. Mark.
I would've left more of the Merlin sound in it, at least huge glass packs like off a Cobra or something, really let that thing roar like it was meant to.. still really cool tho
the disc brakes hiding inside of the drum brakes is a really cool design. another great vehicle that gets used as a vehicle. great job to you and your crew Mr. Leno
***** What do you mean, top gear, being 'Top Gear' has been around for yes, more then 30 years. Its still the same show just gradually gotten more silly.
Bunka Fas Nope, top gear was reformed in 2002 into what it is today. Infact James May wasn't even around in Series 1 because he was lost and claimed there were 2 albert halls. Yes, top gear as a show is old but it was nothing like it was now before 2002.
Hi Jay!!! Thanks for sharing your Bentley. Your right it’s massive. It makes you look very small. Love the plane footage too! Bob did an amazing job putting it together. What a treasure you have there!
What a beautiful machine. Another one I've always wanted. My wife and I named our 1500cc Vulcan 'the Bentley' because of the quality of it and the enormous torque. Wishful thinking!
I'm glad he shares his cars with us instead of hiding them away until the next buyer puts them in their storage buildings or the buildings catch fire for some reason and all are lost without being enjoyed. Good show Jay.
That's the oil cooler, made to look like a supercharger as fitted to the blown 4.5 litre Bentley. On a Merlin, the superchargers are at the back of the engine.
If it was a blown Merlin, it would make 1200 up to 1800 hp. Definitely a Meteor tank engine application. It is a Merlin in size and the block, but not in application
I didn't realize how crazy this was until I watched the video on the engine itself. That is straight up crazy. Hats off to you, thats some real hot rodding.
Oh man that cracked me up. The gas fill shot of it taking all day hit home for me. This episode was one of my favorite, you could tell Jay was having a lot of fun. What an awesome car!
Super high class with the custom Cotten clothes line wrapped steering wheel, Clearly an after British meticulous craftsman restoration, an American touch.
17 GALLONS of oil..Jiffy Lube's wet dream. Thanks for putting it up on the lift and giving us a view of the underside. Barney Oldfield would be jealous of that machine.
Is the motor a Rolls Royce Merlin or a Packard Merlin? I'm assuming its a Rolls Royce version because its put in a British car. You wonder how hard it is a to get a Merlin engine though.
Its probably a RR version given that the car was Built in the UK, and yes you can still find them for sale. I've seen them as cheap as $2400 however usually at this price needing a rebuild. They were built in large numbers because although most commonly associated with the Spitfire and the P51 Mustang these engines were actually used in a lot of other aircraft. Mostly bombers such as the Lancaster however, after the war could also be found in a number of commercial aircraft;, I think they were produced up until the 1050's. There's also a version which could be found in various tanks and other military vehicles although they were not called Merlin's, I've forgotten their name but they are often miss identified as Merlin's although had several defences including 2 rather than 4 valve per cylinder, no supercharger, different carbs etc.
Thanks TheAegisClaw I had a complete brain fart and could not remember the name. LOL! A3roboy, Not necessarily, without checking block numbers there's no way to tell the origins because don't forget, the Merlin version was deigned to operate on AvGas not conventional pump gas. Therefore these engines see significant modifications to allow them to operate on modern gasoline which often entails removing the superchager.
I wasn't speeding, officer. I was just driving this monster, 27 litre, under-stressed engine to its limits to ensure I don't suffer from piston glazing and ruin such a classic.

Larry Phischman It's America, we don't know the difference.
I'm an American. But you're right. The only reason I know the difference if that this exact car was on an episode of Top Gear (UK).
+Larry Phischman This engine, or a variant of it is also used in different ships.. even today.
Tug boats mostly. Most over ships use diesel electric turbines.
+Larry Phischman That's ome hell of a necrobump on this comment. I didn't think I would ever see this again.
+Simon Coles Finally someone else who knows that
+Simon Coles I was going to say, it did NOT sound at all like a Merlin that I know.
I think it sounds glorious. Not quite a mechanical symphony as a Merlin but as solid as a grandfather clock.
Naturally aspirated is probably what you want in a road car with 17 litres
I thought meteors were diesel though ???
I remember reading a book at school called speed six. Ever since then I've loved these cars(works of art), but this beauty combines my love of Bentleys and Merlin engines!...Look after her Jay.....
Great job jay. I miss you on the tonight show but I love watching these vids
One of the best shows out. I compare this to Bob Ross show. Love both. This show is nice and relaxing.
This car is insane! What is the mpg on this monster? Probably a gallon per ignition.
Stet Tan 3 mpg.
+Stet Tan Probably uses 1 litle per cylinder in a span of 3 seconds... >.>
Stet Tan it's measured in gallons per mile, it's about 15 gpm
50 GPM. that being 50 Gallons Per Mile
It's a 27 litre engine. 27 litres is 7 u.s gallons. It was initially used in WWII era British tanks. One of the later ones being the Centurion Tank. You can probably imagine that it uses a lot of fuel.
What a beauty! The 1930 Bentley Speed 6 Blue Train Coupe is my favorite Bentley!
Why can't we have cars like this today? I don't mean utter behemoths, mind, but cars with actual style and classic flair?
Ped safety regulations make this tipe of design impossible sadly but if you want a classy car morgans look very classy
You figure a price tag of a custom build machine like that today and tax's .
@@XxmatixX6videosdiariosdenadav uknow morgans are expensive right?
Take an example of a mercedes G wagon
It looks classic but no one like's it
Everybody hate on this car for its design
Regulations and taxes making it cost-prohibitive.
In other words, the powers that shouldn't be are enslaving the masses.
Solution = Violence.
The way Jay describes driving this beautiful beast just put this car on the wish list for me.
The term SLIM & NON applies to my next statement for sure but.... Id love to take a ride in that insanely cool car.
I've watched this a bunch of times.....never gets old.....have as much fun as possible in that massive machine.....such a smooth running car.....looks beautiful in that dark green color.....👍👍
I'm really curious about how the top looks when raised, and how it works with the dual windshields!
look at those cars..
+DJjakedrake Notice how it isn't 1923 anymore...
feel free to donate craftsman built automobiles to the world at your expense
if your vehicles lose 90% of their value in 10 years, you need to quit buying kias or daewoos.
Thank you Mr Leno...great vid for us
What a beautiful car!
Nice to know Jay respects that big bloke's opinion.
Two of the best car guys around.
One is opinionated and funny and one is reserved.
Lets think about this in air cooled Volkswagen terms.
This thing is 27,000cc. That's f-ing enormous
the disc brakes hiding inside of the drum brakes is a really cool design. another great vehicle that gets used as a vehicle. great job to you and your crew Mr. Leno
Sorry but its not the 'English version of Top Gear'.. it IS top gear. Any other countries 'Top gears' are versions of the original.
Yeah top gears been on air for more than 30 years and the American versions has only been on air for a couple of years
Black Mamba15 Top gear as we know it today has only been on air since 2002. Sorry to dissapoint, it hasnt been 30 years.
*****
What do you mean, top gear, being 'Top Gear' has been around for yes, more then 30 years.
*****
But what is your point though, its still Top Gear, same logo, brand etc..
I've never seen a happier human being than Jay at 1:05 in the P51
Does she carry 50 mm cannon and 303 machine gun rounds ?
Nope
20mm hispanos like the spit
Hi Jay!!! Thanks for sharing your Bentley. Your right it’s massive. It makes you look very small. Love the plane footage too! Bob did an amazing job putting it together. What a treasure you have there!
Jay you need to invite Brian Johnson (AC/DC) and his thunderguts bentley vanden plas le mans 1928 to the garage.
What a beautiful machine. Another one I've always wanted. My wife and I named our 1500cc Vulcan 'the Bentley' because of the quality of it and the enormous torque. Wishful thinking!
LMAO...you know, Jay...soon as I saw this car on Top Gear, I thought of you. Damn...and I was going to get you one for your birthday lol.
I'm glad he shares his cars with us instead of hiding them away until the next buyer puts them in their storage buildings or the buildings catch fire for some reason and all are lost without being enjoyed. Good show Jay.
Gas tank placement: just make sure you don't get rear-ended.
Thanks, Ralph Nader.
I love jay!! what a dream come true, i asked for a car with an airplane engine and here it is . i feel lucky. thanks jay keep up the great work!
They call these Merlins, but they are actually Meteor engines without blowers from tanks .
Rob Mackenzie you dont see the blower in front of the grille??
That's the oil cooler, made to look like a supercharger as fitted to the blown 4.5 litre Bentley. On a Merlin, the superchargers are at the back of the engine.
If it was a blown Merlin, it would make 1200 up to 1800 hp. Definitely a Meteor tank engine application. It is a Merlin in size and the block, but not in application
i'm building a plastic model kit of this car..and this vid is a treasure cove of reference!!thanks, mr. leno
"I pity the fool that rearends this car!"
- Mr. T
I didn't realize how crazy this was until I watched the video on the engine itself. That is straight up crazy. Hats off to you, thats some real hot rodding.
Jay, you have amazing cars...
Oh man that cracked me up. The gas fill shot of it taking all day hit home for me. This episode was one of my favorite, you could tell Jay was having a lot of fun. What an awesome car!
17 gallons is 65 litres. You're welcome :)
and it only gets 3mpg
wow
dennis trident william Lol, that car probably eats Prius for breakfast D:
B125WUV T1125 11125 keep in mind that those 17 gallons (65litres) are NOT FUEL but lubrication oil of the engine...
@@Z4G. A Tesla Model S goes 300 miles on 100kwh. 100kwh=2.5 gallons of gasoline.
Super high class with the custom Cotten clothes line wrapped steering wheel,
Clearly an after British meticulous craftsman restoration, an American touch.
OH MY GOD I WANT TO TOUCH IT, I WANT TO FEEL IT, I WANT TO SIT IN IT, HUG IT, CRY IN IT, OH MY GOOOOOOOOODDDDDDDD
gotta love jay for driving this cars instead of just keeping them on the garage
Spitfire!
THE JOY OF THE PURE ESSENCE OF MOTORING.
If I was a supervillan my car would be something like this
The Golden year’s of automotive engineering!
Can the designer Bob design a second pair of jeans that are slightly better fitting for Jay?
Enjoy it Jay- looks like a real blast to drive Workmanship is superb. Thanks for sharing it to us.
Im sure it could easily do a burnout
"The main problem with this car is everybody else is going too slow" 😂👏🏻
@10:48
Sir Jay Leno
"English version of Top Gear" - LOL.
He means the original :D
It started as a regional programme for the West Midlands, presented by Angela Rippon.
Actually Top Gear in all iterations is kind of shitty now. Once they ax the original hosts.
+A.H. Clarkson, Hammond & May weren't the original hosts. The original show was a different format altogether.
What a beautiful locomotive!
great car. but. who was that guy in the gas tank ? lol
17 GALLONS of oil..Jiffy Lube's wet dream. Thanks for putting it up on the lift and giving us a view of the underside. Barney Oldfield would be jealous of that machine.
when you have 17 gallons of oil, the oil change interval changes drastically - I bet you only change oil like every 36 month
Still waiting for that P1 Video....
Jay is like me with talent and money...you sir, are legendary, and are a real inspiration to guys like me. You live my dreams.
There's also a version which could be found in various tanks and other military vehicles although they were not called Merlin's, I've forgotten their name but they are often miss identified as Merlin's although had several defences including 2 rather than 4 valve per cylinder, no supercharger, different carbs etc.
cheyennedogsoldiers The tank version was called the Meteor, initially used in the Cromwell medium tank.
TheAegisClaw No, the unsupercharged version was called the Meteor. It was fitted to planes as well.
Neither. As it doesn't have a supercharger, it's a Meteor.
Jay - of all cars - PLEASE let us hear it start!!!!
