  • Kevin Gausman's splitter is one of the filthiest pitches in baseball.
In 2021, Gausman had a .133 batting average against his splitter with a 46% whiff rate.
His Splitter grip also incredibly unique. Gausman discusses his splitter with a ton of detail. Pitchers and pitching coaches, it's a must watch.

It's so enlightening to hear him say that some guys pronate well and other guys snap off breaking balls well but it's rare for someone to be good at both. I could never throw change ups effectively but I can throw every type of breaking ball well. Makes sense now that my wrist is just built to go one way better than the other.

yeah man. bodies are built different. In basketball it’s a mistake to build your shot based on someone else. Things like wrist flexibility make it difficult to comfortably put the hand in certain positions. It’s not talked about enough.

Danm im the complete opposite. Changeup is like my best pitch but I don't throw it whatsoever because I don't wanna kill my velo

    • @Old_Nosey

@@lightlybatteredjustcrispy Throwing a changeup won't kill your velo, if it's your best pitch use it a lot and get comfortable with it.

This is pitching porn. It's wild how a slight change can make so much difference. The thumb placement when he wants it for a strike compared to a nasty one with a lot of movement is insane. Then he pushes his thumb against his index????
His splitter is a top 10 pitch in baseball.

Funny thing him showing this isn't like even a MLB pitch could pick this up easily maybe even never some pitches are perfect for that one pitcher but maybe a highschool kid might see this and be able to work on it over years

That's pretty similar to Maddux's changeup grip, middle finger was spaced just slightly more, and thumb a little bit more under.

At 55yo I am taking my dog to the dog park and going to try Gausman grip when I throw my dog the ball. To me it is similar to a circle change. And yes, I still throw in the 80s. It is because of all the long toss with my dog. Love these videos. I still want to be the 5th beetle

When I played baseball as a kid, I never understood this pitch. I could always see the pitcher's fingers split, and I knew not to swing at it because it wasn't going to hit the strike zone. This seemed like a junk pitch that never deceived me.
