Larry Shepard is great at showing how to start a Model A that's been sitting for a long time. These young people were thrilled to see it run. And to see them excited is what this hobby is all about. Model A days is a great event to take in. For everyone watching this video, if you haven't been to Model A days, you have to check it out. Thanks, Paul, for doing this video.

Larry is really helping these youngsters with the Model A and it's exposure to them. Wonderful to see him helping them in so many ways. I hope all had fun, learned a lot myself, thanks Paul. Have a great day!

That's the future of the hobby - well done! What an incredible opportunity through their school program, and Model A Days. The knowledge that got passed to them is priceless. Thanks for sharing this, and all you do. Have a blessed week ~ Chuck

Well, here it is, Saturday afternoon. I am now one of those 'kids'. I just brought home on the trailer an early model A frame! The foundation for a ground up build. So I too will learn as I go. Wish me luck, I'm gonna need it! And lots of help, I'm sure!

Great inspiration to the future Model A family members and to get that Model A back on the road. Kudos and a loud shout out to Larry for being a great tutor. Thanks for sharing Model A Guy and your killing it with the Model A mad professor lab coat.

Very cool for the students to see and hear the A run afjer all the work they and he teachers put into it. Nice camera work too, it’s cool that you were abto to document it for them.

I have mixed feelings about what happened here. When I trailered this car to Mishawaka at the beginning of this wonderful project, the students and their teacher explained to me their goal of completely disassembling the car, learning everything there was to know about it and then restoring it. Over the last couple of years, they have brought their work to Model A Day, and it was inspiring to see what they were learning and accomplishing. This year they came with the body back on the restored chassis, and were happily working under the direction of their instructor who mostly was staying out of the way and letting the kids work. Then, in comes Larry with an alternate plan: lets make it run, and suddenly it was HIS project - shouting orders, scrounging parts (and motor oil), looking for tools, and overcoming what ever the kids goal was for the day In almost every way. This "making it run" way of doing things is not very good teaching, and also not very good process for long term successful restoration. Especially for the kids, and their teacher, at Mishawaka, the goal is learning, not putting on a show. I'm not sure that I am much of a fan of the "Will it run" method, in any venue. I bet that a survey of the owners of cars they restored would show that they did not begin the process by forcing that old engine to start.

I kind of get it. If they were ok with just getting it to where it would start, then I don't see it as an issue.

I can understand what you're saying. The thing is, when this project started, it was before covid (2019). The students who started this project have since graduated and moved on. Looking at the picture on their Facebook page, not one of those students has returned to keep working on the project. This group of students came in after the project was already underway, and missed the beginning, so none of them have had the full experience either. This group of students all looked very excited to hear it run, and now have new enthusiasm for the project. I hope they will have an opportunity to drive it before they graduate next year.

This guy seemed (to me) to just show up, shove his way in and take over in a not so instructional or even polite manner. I think that had I been one of those students I would have walked away while making my opinion well known to the entire crowd of spectators!

I do some teaching, and I thought he did a great job. High school kids like to see a real result. When Larry heard that for all the work they had done they had never heard the engine come to life, he gave the kids something fast and fun. As adults, we hear barking orders. He did bark orders, but these kids caught on very quickly I thought and would have seen it as teaching. Our schools often teach very slowly and kids get bored. Anyways, that’s my two cents which in 1930 couldn’t even buy you a cup of coffee.

Nice to see this video. I was walking out toward the parking lot to leave. I heard Larry Shepard say he was gonna first start it. I saw you set up your camera on that truck bed. Larry Shepard sure is good at this keeping the crowd in it and the first start crew moving. Super happy for the kids to hear the motor run for the first time. Also want to say nice meet you. I talked to you briefly in the museum. (My story was first drive with my siblings at cemetery.)

Nice to see this video. I was walking out toward the parking lot to leave. I heard Larry Shepard say he was gonna first start it. So I stuck around to watch. I’m in the far side in the light colored hat about even with the radiator. I saw you set up your camera on that truck bed.
