Alex Lifeson from Rush visits Music Shop in Tokyo

- On April 4th 2014 out of the blue, Alex Lifeson from Rush visited the Guitar Shop in Tokyo I used to work at. This was an amazing moment for me. Thank you everyone for enjoying & sharing this. So you know, the Les Paul sold the day this video was released and the PRS Acoustic sold on December 7th 2015. The new owner (as you can imagine) is VERY happy with his Guitar. This Guitar has now become somewhat rather legendary now thanks to this video. Again, thank you Alex.
Neither of the two guitars were raised a single Yen/Cent from their original prices. I've had a number of people slinging around claims that we would have done that, but that's because that's what THEY would have done. We did not.

UPDATE 2020/01/11: I'm very sad to learn as we all are that Neil Peart has passed away. My deepest condolences to Geddy Lee & his family, Alex Lifeson & his family, all of my fellow Rush fans around the world, Neil Peart's friends and especially to Neil's family. He will be sadly missed, however there is no way his influence and inspiration will disappear for a very long time to come if ever. Thank you Neil 🥁📚
September 12th 1952 / January 7th 2020. May "The Master" rest in peace.
This video was filmed with Alex's personal permission. I also cleared the usage of this footage before posting the video with the permission of SRO Management company.
On top of that this video is not an advertisement for any in-particular companies. I am simply sharing my luck and good fortune to have met one of my favorite musicians. I must admit, it helps that I used to work in that music store ;-)
And again, we did not jack up the price of either of the Guitars featured in this video by a single Yen.

Michel d'Aubigné thank you sir 😊
Michel d'Aubigné my bad. Sorry about that. I’m equally surprised and impressed that your life revolves around the Fashion Industry yet you’re also a Rush fan and a Rock Music fan in general. That’s pretty damn awesome 😎
Those are some beautiful guitars in that store. I wish that I could have had the fingers to be able to learn how to play a guitar, but I have developed a quite decent skill set on the massive drum kit that I own. I've been drumming for 35 years because of Neil Peart and Rush. Rush has had an instrumental part of my life (no pun intended. 🤣)
@@FrankPCarpi Wonderful Frank - I'm learning guitar, now in my 50's - fat fingers & all !! (Keyboards for 40 yrs)
Music is a blessing - Cheers from Seattle 🍻
@@keyscook it's never too late to pursue your passion. It looks like Alex Lifeson has chubby fingers to me, and listen to how beautifully he makes his instrument sing. I didn't get started drumming until I was 29, and now I feel like I'm pretty good at it, and all of my friends keep wondering why I'm not in a band. I just love playing along with the the music that I enjoy, and I don't have any of the pressure of having to perform before a live audience other than the living God. Blessings of music to you too. Cheers
Every rock band has at least one humble down to earth member.....
with Rush you have 3.
Alex Lifeson is one of the best rock guitarist of all time. He's so underrated.
Working Man Live from Cleveland proves it.
And one of the coolest guys ever. Period.
Lerxst is one of my favorite humans, period. Humble, fantastic musician, and funny as hell!
Not by Guitar players.
As a Canadian, it makes me proud to have the members of Rush representing our nation. Not only are they among the greatest rock musicians of all time, but from what I've seen they're also polite, kind, and generous people, and I can't think of any group of guys that could better fulfill this role. :)
fact
They also did not sellout to Hollywood BS and stab their country in the back, unlike Neil Young
Indeed...well-said my Northern brother. : )
I grew up in North Dakota, so I'm almost Canadian. I can shovel snow at a very high level. In any case, I've loved Rush since I first discovered them in 1975. Thank you Canada! I'm a big Guess Who fan as well. In January, Grand Forks feels just like Winnipeg.
Please have more children up there in Canada, and send the extra folks down here in the US......we need the help!
I met Alex in 1993 after an Eric Johnson concert in Toronto. I was with a friend and we were, and still are, huge Rush fans. He was just walking to the parking lot after the concert. We saw him and freaked out! We approached him and he was so nice and genuine towards us. He could obviously tell we were nervous but he took the time to talk to us, sign an autograph and even got his friend to take a picture of the three of us. Absolute classy guy with ZERO ego at all.
How do you think a band lasts as long as these guys have?
None of them have these giant inflated egos.
To find men with this much talent and so much humility is truly rare indeed.
Because they're Canadian!!!
Maybe, besides upbringing, because they came so close to losing everything around 2112 they never forgot how close they'd come to losing that dream and never took it for granted after the fact. There is also a video on youtube of a teenage Alex Lifeson, talking with his parents for a documentary about teenagers coming of age. He wants to pursue music, they stress that's okay but he needs an education as well regardless. It shows a lot about his family life in a short clip, because the conversation is pretty deep.
Being humble is a learned behavior. So teach 'em to be humble when they are young.
And cause they refuse to be celebrities. They are musician who happened to be Canadian too! lol
One of the many reasons why we love them. True friendship, humility, lack of addictions. Just good dudes.
Dude. THE. Nicest guy ever. Fuckin love Rush.
+sixfeetontop saw you on another rush video, wow, an hour later... i guess we both have similar video and music tastes.
XXcrapcakesXX Nice. What can we say. We have great taste.
Neil Peart, we will miss your music.RIP
David Wenke There is no need to leave RIP on every damn video..especially when this is about Alex. 🙄
Yeah it seems that fans are looking for every vid that has someone one of a Rush in it and have to mention Neil passing ok ok it’s is sad he died I’m crushed but enough
Is there a nicer more Humble Guitar Hero than Alex .
peter frampton & brian may are both just as nice & humble. edit) frampton was once in a band called 'Humble Pie'.
Howe makes this grade. But Lifeson is a straight gentleman.
Granted . Frampton is supremely talented and comes across as a really nice Guy.
Steve Vai fits into this category. ✌️
Dave Murray of Iron Maiden and Alex are both very humble and nice guys.
Alex Lifeson such a real genuine guy! Class act😌
Yes he is none of the rock God ego like so many others have. I guess he realizes how lucky he is to have the world's greatest job, guitar player.
Off course he is he is from British Columbia, Canada..
@@daverepole9283 Ontario... No?
@@michaelt3308 he was born in Fernie B.C. look it up
@@daverepole9283 He's from Willowdale Ontario .... Not BC
I never get tired of watching this video. Such a gent and great human.
And that's EXACTLY why when I was standing there with Alex I asked him if he would let me shoot a video of us wandering around the store together. It was all for people JUST LIKE YOU!!! Thanks for watching... multiple times it would seem 🤘🤩
@@JasonMcNamara thanks Jason. Must have been an amazing experience. Feel blessed to have had the experience of watching it albeit remotely. Big love from Thailand.
@@JasonMcNamara Thank you. My first time seeing it. What a wonderful video.
Yeah, and Alex is a great guy too.
A good Canadian kid!
Rush are 3 guys of pure class. Amazing musicians and even better to their fans. So good.
That couldn't be more true!!
Neil not so much. He'll tell you to get lost.
Neil is a very private man. I'm confident he won't tell someone to "get lost". I think he would politely excuse himself from the situation. There's nothing wrong with that.
And then there were 2...
And now I've made myself sad again
@@shongo2k15 it would more likely have been "get a life". RIP Professor.
For a musician of Mr. Lifeson's considerable talents, he has this enormous capacity to be a regular guy.
It's very refreshing isn't it?
Cheers, Jason
i love alex lifeson. very humble but a monster guitarist :-)
will always love rush :-)
Hit the bullseye, Alex is such a kind and sincere man, I will never forget watching him sign my Hold Your Fire T shirt, he brought for me, the second day he did a favour for his friend, recorded our high school music band! I gave him maple syrup and spoke with him different times throughout. I was so young, asked him if he had ever met Pete Townshend, lol, and he said, "no, I have never met him", almost in a contemplative way, like it was a realization...one which would happen some years later at a huge award for Rush! The stories abound, props, great video!!
You can be forgiven Greg. It’s not so easy when one of your heroes is standing there directly in front of you. I’ve been lucky enough to spend time with quite a few of mine so I know how it is. Even from this time with Alex I am always thinking of things I wish I had of asked him that day. Such is life.
@@JasonMcNamara I hear you loud and clear....Test for echo LOL:) I hope the circle of life brings him back your way to ask those questions, so keep them in mind!!
So proud to be a Hoser right now... 🇨🇦
Guy played “Spirit of the Radio” and he sounds like he could be my next door neighbour...
Amazing...
Blows me away that he looks like he'd be your insurance salesman or kids' soccer coach.
Beauty
Fyi. It is Spirit of Radio.
No 'the' in it.
What a trip that must've been, having Alex randomly show up in your store. I, too, have watched all the documentaries, and it's pretty clear that Alex is the real deal - a great guy with a great sense of humour. I hope his heart is healing after the recent loss of his his dear friend The Professor.
We as fans can only imagine what the band and Neil's family are going through. He is a great loss to us all.
This is what I've known about the Rush guys for forty years. They are regular guys, no pretense, no egos, they do not consider themselves royalty in the least and they love their fans. Great video.
Alex is PURE Canadian! We are so proud of him along with the rest of Rush! We love you!
So you all know, the Gibson he signed sold today. And NO, we did not raise the price of the Guitar. It sold for exactly the same price it was advertised for before Alex signed it.
The PRS Acoustic however is still here.... for now!!
Respect for that decision, you could have made a ton of money.
Thank you Laurence. That's very appreciated for you to say that. Greed is one of the things undoing this wonderful world we live in. Alex was very generous with his time. For us to up the price just because of Alex's kindness would be insulting and would be taking advantage of his warn & kind nature. I want no part of that.
That's so awesome that you got to meet Alex. A friend of mine repairs RV's (Mobile Holmes) and Rush brought in their RV to where he worked but unfortunately for him he was away on vacation. He would have been the guy to fix their RV as well. I think Rush would be the only band/celebrity that I would get star struck for. I did get to meet Donald Sutherland and was able to keep my cool, was awesome as well though.
Haha!! That's a cool story. Thanks Shrap. I tell you, another band who are equally as awesome to hang out with as Rush is Living Colour. They are a fanastic bunch of guys. And so are the guys from Extreme just for the record.
One thing I can tell you is that all of the bands have their good and bad days. I almost feel sorry for people in the limelight of have legitimate talent because they are there to make their art and everybody wants a piece of them. I guess it's the price you gotta pay.
if you are a fan, how come you have never seen them live? they tour relentlessly, i have seen them three times and im not the hugest fan
Alex & I had a couple of moments of interaction during a concert on the Time Machine Tour. It was my first (and only) Rush concert, so I bought a VIP ticket and was 3 rows from the stage, but was recovering from a broken back and, while the crowd around me was rocking out, I was standing still, in agony, with my arms wrapped around my midsection to take some pressure off of my spine.
I was in front of stage left, in front of Alex's mic & foot pedals, and the next thing I know he's looking in my general direction trying to look past the lights into the crowd.
He walks to the edge of the stage and leans forward, shading his eyes from the glare, and then makes his way across the stage and says something to Geddy, who then comes over to stage left in front of me while playing his heart out, then switches back positions with Alex. Alex immediately walks to the edge of the stage again and leans way out looking towards where I'm standing.
He has a worried look on his face and points at me. I think he's pointing to someone else near me and look around, and then back at Alex who is now clearly pointing at ME.
He sees he has my attention and tells me to put a fist up, which I do immediately. He goes back over to Geddy and says something, then comes right back in front of me, points at me again and stops playing long enough to motion with both his fists up in the air, telling me to put them both up, which I did, then he tells me "Let me hear you yell!", and he does a war cry then waits for me. I pump both fists in the air and let loose a proper war cry and he smiles big and gets back to playing as he goes back over to Geddy to say something else.
I was blown away. Never thought that would ever happen.
Alex is The Man!
:)
(i started playing bass guitar in 11th grade because of Rush & Geddy, and play to this day (35 years later), with Rush songs being my favorites to play along to)
What a wonderful story. I'm envious. Even though I got to hang with Alex, Rush never played in Australia, not even once and they haven't played here in Japan since '84/'85 and I was only 13 back then and never came to Japan until 2002 for the first time. On top of this day, Geddy purchased an original 1962 Jazz Bass from me, well he got his tech to contact me, but still he owns it and I sold it to him/them. All that and yet I've never seen them live and sadly now I never will. Talk about broken hearted.
Still, your story was very cool. Thanks again & thanks for watching my video.
Cheers!
OregonOnTwoWheels Your story was longer than a Rush concert! :-) jk.. What an awesome experience! I would never get tired of recalling it.
@@mehmeh9748 Granted... but I read it all... Lolll...
Thank you for sharing your experience. Retelling it for us makes me feel like I was able to relive it with you.
@Land-Shark
That had to be a very priceless moment for you. I'm glad that you were able to enjoy your moment with Al and get your mind off of your agonizing back pain. I hope that you are mending and having a lot less pain. I am aquatinted with chronic back pain, and hydrocodone is my only way of getting through the days.
All three of them are fantastic guys.. my sister went to one of their shows and Geddy lowered his glasses so she could take a picture of him on stage it was amazing..there aren't too many great bands like this and now with Neil gone I don't think there will be others
Greatest band in the world; this man is responsible for the soundtrack to the world I want to be in when I close my eyes for the past 33 years. You walked amongst greatness, by chance? Deer in headlights.
I was a little star struck Darin. After the mountains of famous musicains I've over the years I rarely get so swpet away by the experience, but meeting Alex was like reaching up and touching the heavens.
That’s awesome, I met him once in a radio shack in Richmond Hill , Ontario Canada and he was just like that such a decent person 👍
What a gracious guy, very generous with his time. All 3 Rush guys (R.I.P. Neil) seem to be very grounded, humble, decent human beings.
He was sooo generous with his time on that day. Crazy that it'll be 10 years this April.
Alex, you are a legendary guitar player. He is so down to earth. I would love to meet the Rush members....
Alex looks like a very humble person. What a wonderful experience. And you were also very respectful all throughout his visit. You deserve some credit for not being intrusive and trying to keep his unexpected visit a pleasant experience for everybody- including him.
I totally LOVE and really appreciate you saying that. Thank you. Thankfully Alex wasn't the first big name I've met over the years. However it was really one of the most exciting and insanely unexpected. Best day to go to work... EVER!!! (not that I work there anymore🤣).
Alex Lifeson and Brian May 2 of the nicest, most pleasant, charming and intelligent men in Rock music😁😁
Couldn't agree more. Now I just need to get the chance to meet Brian May as well and I'll be all set. I have to say, the day I went to 5150 and met with Eddie was really special too. He was an absolute pleasure to hang with. There is a really brief video from that experience on my channel as well if you are interested.

Their whole life story has been laden with comments about how nice these guys really are. Even the Kiss guys said so when they toured together way back. That's why we all love Rush.
Spot on 👍
Man, those three guys in RUSH, just humble, down to earth awesome fucking people.
That is true, but at least he's open & up front about it. He doesn't try to pretend he's any other way. I give him massive props for that.
Jerry C if you have seen Peart interviews, where he's comfortable and engaged, he's quite personable.
While I'm not that way myself, I totally get it and I think that if Neil feels that way it's 100% his right to be that way. I'd love to meet him too one day, BUT, it's not within his comfort zone so unless I was introduced to him I wouldn't go out of my way to force him to meet me. Well that's me anyway.
In a word? WOW! Talk about a once in a lifetime event! And he is so down to earth. I didn’t think I could like Rush any more. The guitars he signed tripled in value. :)
hes got some time to freak his fans out ! rush has the largest group of musician fans in the world. the ultimate trio.
I would have to say that is spot on. I'm also a big Iron Maiden fan and they have loyal legion of fans as well, but Rush fans go to another level again. It's because of moments like this that we feel the way we do about them. Thanks for watching Jimmy Jones.
(On a side note, have a look at a kids cartoon called Kazoops. You'll get a good laugh out of which character shares your name and he LOVES music too).
I know Neil is now gone, but Rush will always live in our hearts and soul. Thanks for being amazing Alex!!!
Rush rocks, and thats one awsome guitar shop.
Most underrated guitarist ever and he's one of my favourites.
I have looked up to his playing and personality since 1975. God speed Mr. Lifeson!
ThAnks foe sharing this..Your enthusiasm is shared'
Alex, Geddy, and Neil (rip) are three of the best humans to ever make it in the music industry. They're humble, funny, generous, and unbelievably talented. I'm so fortunate to have been able to see them play live, and their music will live on forever.
And we're all still listening to them all the time even all these years after they stopped being a band as we lot Neil. Rush forever!!
What a great guy! And one of the best guitar players in the universe.
I totally agree. Thanks for watching.
I was inspired by Alex Lifeson, and Rush to learn how to play the guitar. This was way back in the late seventies, during the Farewell to Kings tour after hearing Xanadu.
Alex Lifeson, mega rock superstar, adored by millions, supremely talented master at his craft....seems like he would loan you the shirt off his back if you needed it, love it when these guys are down to earth.
Lifeson on the Trailer Park Boys was priceless!
Can you believe they let a drunk male prostitute into the shop like that? Ricky would sort this situation right out.
Lmao that episode was hilarious 😂
They kidnap him from room 2112Too funny. Bubbles was in a band called Sandbox
"Oh, he won't do anything stupid, Julian."

I like Lifeson more and more with every video I watch. Great dude.
He is opposite of Gene Simons:)
Rush actually toured with Kiss early in their career..Gene joked that while they were partying and surrounded by women after the shows, the Rush guys weren't really interested..the Rush guys said they were happy in their rooms reading books..I think it was from a Rush documentary on Amazon..

NIcest guys in rock.. I love Rush.
So much of the appealing color and character of Rush's music comes from his playing. I don't know if I'd call him "underrated", anymore, because I think most people who know anything about rock guitar recognize his brilliance and influence. This is such a great video! Your store looks beautiful -- open one here in Texas, hey?
+Brian Shaffner : Haha!!! In Texas? Interesting idea. Anyway, thanks for enjoying the video Brian. If you ever get to Tokyo come say hello. The store is even more impressive in real life than it is on this video. You'd have to see it with your own eyes to really get that.

That is 100% correct. No tour for this trip. Just a chill out visit. It really was just lucky coincidence for me that he stopped by our store.

At our current price of 1,280,000JPY, if you (or anyone) were traveling to Japan and purchased this in-store we could sell it duty free and it would then become 1,185,185JPY. According to an online currency converter I just checked, today (May 26th 2015) it would be $9,738USD. That's only $739 above Sweetwater's price. Believe me, it still breaks my heart to this day, but I got to hang with Alex and Geddy purchased an original 1962 Jazz Bass (albeit through his tech) from me so I can't complain.
@@JasonMcNamara if you get a chance, look up Rick Beato on UA-cam, he is a musician/producer based in Atlanta USA. He does a series called What makes this song great, he breaks down the songs showing how they are put together and produced. He is also a huge Rush fan and has featured a few of their songs, Limelight and Closer to the Heart.
Greetings from Toronto Canada!

That is faaaaaantastic! Can't tell you how great it is to see a legendary guitarist like Alex taking time to chat with you in your shop. What a TRUE gentleman!
to meet Alex in person would be something special..
***** It truly was, believe me ;-)

of course I believe you!
Lucky guy! Alex is the best, seems so fun, so engaged, wish I could meet him in 🇨🇦 someday
Alex is definitely on my top 5 people I'd like to meet. As said in the video, he always seems like a very cool guy.
I hope the Gods of rock & roll smile upon you and grant you that wish as they did to me 😁
Cheers, Jason
These guys all three of them so humble yet so admired for just being themselves. My best band since I was a boy and that's part of the reason along with there spectacular mind blowing performances all over the globe.Getty with his catchy bass and Alex with that smooth balance and Neil I can't even say enough to describe his ability to play beats that will beat on and on forever in people's hearts and minds forever.Three guys making music like that is the rarest in making modern music sound like 10 players.RIP and farewell to the king.
He seemed like a very cool guy!
Wow! Now there is an experience you can take with you for the rest of your life. Alex and his wife were so nice to have taken the time to do all of that.
Tell me about it. And yes, it truly was a magical moment for me. They were soooo kind. Good to know you enjoyed the video.
Cheers, Jason
And thank YOU, Jason, for making this video. Muslims go to Mecca once in their lifetimes, Japanese climb Mount Fuji, and you must see RUSH on their next tour. Cheers!
Believe me when I tell you, it has not been from lack of desire that has kept me away. As you should be able to tell from my voice, I am Australian and Rush have NEVER toured down under. Hell, they haven't been here to Japan since 1984 either. I am praying to the Gods that next tour they get here to Tokyo where I live now. As you can imagine all of my Aussie friends who are Rush fans have asked me over and over, "Did you tell Alex to get the band to come to Australia" which of course I did bring it up with him ;-)
Ishibashi Music English UA-cam Channel Saw an interview somewhere that the down under was on their list of places they wanted to go.........lucky guy to see him. My only brush with any of them was Neil riding up to where I was as I took his pic. He was going to their bus..... I said NOTHING.
Well done. Poor Neil hates the limelight
I've been to 3 live rock/metal concerts. Two were Rush lol.
Is there a more classy and generous famous person than Alex Lifeson? I wish more "celebrity" musicians would learn from a man like him.
I loved what Alex's wife Charlene said in the background. Something like, "I keep hoping those guitars sell; Move all this stuff out of the house!" That's hilarious and quite common.
