I love how chill Alex is. He doesn’t seem to have PTSD from when Ricky kidnapped him.
Only the real ones know this one! Boy did Ricky stress him out and aged him 😂😂
LOL
😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@jmabs5096 I wish he would've played that Diane Sawyer song.
@@denafitzgerald2554 😂😂👀
Alex Lifeson is a gift. He literally shines.
He really does 😍
Alex and The Captain in the Limelight 😎
Earthshines?
Alex can play like Page or Holdsworth he can do it all
Love this man. He's practically my sole reason for picking up guitar, since Farewell to Kings and he always comes across as a gent
Alex is truly one of a kind. His speech at the hall of fame induction was the greatest EVER!
Alex is one of Canada's most beloved sons. So humble, so funny and so talented. We're all proud of him
As an american I can say we are proud of him for yall 😂🤘
“I didn’t trust anybody to make my mistakes for me” (Alex Lifeson) ❤️
typical humble rush comment
I could listen to Alex talk for hours. He has such a calming presence.
He is a really nice guy for sure RUSH is a great band they sounded so good.
I am not a rush fan but in the 90's when I was in my 20's I worked at a night club called the orbit room in Toronto's Little Italy that Alex Lifeson was part owner of and I will always say he is just a really nice, friendly man.
@@porthopeguitarist2536 LoL, Lifespan. Keyboard autocorrect isn't really helpful sometimes 😂
6:45 "I always wanted to be in control. I never trusted anybody to make my mistakes for me." - Alex Lifeson.
There's Rock Stars... then there's Alex Lifeson. A humble, gracious man of music. quick to take the focus off himself and let others shine. Cutting edge comedic ability that is equal to his musical ability. He has all the necessary goods to be a Rockstar... but he is so much more.
I am one of MANY die hard Alex Lifeson fans .. His Creativity is 2nd to none !!
I’m in my 50s now and Alex has been with me every single day, musically speaking, since I was 14 years old. I love other bands but Rush is in my DNA. An absolute legend.
Ditto. Well said.
VERY well put. Exactly my own truth also. 59 and since 14... or I'm still 14 at 59.😎 Its always so great to hear the boys interviewed. True fellow Canadian demeanours shining through each time.
Such a humble, soft-spoken guy despite having churned out original music for almost 50 years. 20+ albums of original music with Rush in addition to his solo stuff. What a gift to the music world!
Most underrated guitarist ever. It's hard to stand out in a band that featured the best bassist and drummer in the history of rock, but it was Lifeson's emotive solos and textural rhythms that made me want to be a guitarist. One of very few players whose leads give me goosebumps.
I have often said this to people... if it weren't that he were in a band with the greatest drummer and bassist to ever lace on a pair of sneakers, he'd be more widely regarded as a "legendary" guitarist. I consider him one of the greatest.
Absolutely, I believe that each of their talents made the other band members better, but Rush did have the most talented drummer ever.
Underrated? To be underrated, many must think you suck. Who thinks that Alex sucks? Nobody. Underappreciated? Perhaps, but not by me. I've thought he was one of the best since the mid 70s.
@@alexanderbrown4250 The very definition of "Underrated" is "not rated or valued highly enough."
i hear that a lot but all i ever heard about him was lavish praise that he deserves, how many guitarists in history had a chord named after them? cant get higher than that, john petrucci, dave grohl, kirk hammet all adore him so that says it all
As Page, Blackmore, May, Fripp etc fan the ONE guitar player who influenced my playing way more than any other is Alex Lifeson, especially his work from Farewell to Kings/Hemispheres period. His ability to put the song first and adapt his style and sound is truly inspirational. If ever there was a composition that incorporated EVERYTHING you need to learn on guitar listen to La Villa Strangiato. It's ALL in there!
Such an incredible guitarist. He really is up there with the best.
Alex Lifeson is such a chill super nice guy, he’s one of the most real and genuine people out there, not at all like a typical “rock star”
Lee: I get it. This was an Epiphone arranged interview with the great Lerxst. But please - this was barely an appetizer. Please, PLEASE, after the whole promo period for the new awesome Epiphone Lifeson axe is over and Alex has more time to breathe, P L E A S E do your best to get a proper "The Captain Meets..." episode with Alex.
YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST....
^this
🙏🙏🙏
Yes!
YESSSSSSSSS
It may be a short video, but this dude is the reason I'm playing
Such a genuine person and a true musical genius. So happy this interview happened. Cheers Captain.
I met Alex at his bar in Toronto in the mid 90's... such a gentleman .. and one amazing musician !!!
So jealous. That was on my life bucket list. Was he gigging or just hanging out? Is the bar still there and is he still involved? Good for you!
@@joesatchton212 ... he owned a bar in Toronto called "The Orbit Room", Some musically minded friends and I used to go there for drinks to see the house band "The Dexters"... an absolutely killer blues 5 piece, Hammond organ.Leslie...the works. One evening Tom Cochran came in and ended up sitting right next to me, Alex came over to see Tom and the three of us had a short conversation about Tom and Alex sitting in with the band. Tom declined saying he'd had too much to drink, but Alex did a few songs with The Dexters....I was impressed, he was very easy to talk to and thanked us for coming out to his establishment.... class act all the way. Tom was also great, just a regular guy with a very interesting job was my impression of him... great evening. The bar was still there, but apparently Alex is no longer the owner and the bar had been closed during Covid...
@@docsiltanen shoot, I've been there many times the past few years, never saw Alex, then I heard it was closing and first learned he owned it!
Saw Rush 7 times in 40 years. Best musicians I ever saw.
I only found Rush in January 2020. What a rollercoaster of emotions and experience the last year and a half has been. I've been playing guitar for about 12 years, just by myself at home playing along to songs. But I always try to improve and always get better. I'd hit a wall for the last couple of years and couldn't improve. Alex's guitar compositions literally breathed life into my guitar playing, I've improved probably two-fold and have not stopped playing Rush tunes all year. He's taught me new chord shapes, how to explore the neck more and the magic of open notes in harmony with the right chords.
Thank you for everything you've done for us Alex (and Geddy and Neil)
I know Alex is doing "the rounds" to promote the product with retailers and the interwebs, yet he seemed more engaged with this interview than any other I've seen. It was great to see his sense of humor emerge during his banter with The Captain. Now the product - the Epi Alex Lifeson LP is a LOT of kit for the retail price!
I had one and I returned it. The electronics sucked. I didn't want to deal with returning it for repairs and waiting .... I had returned a new flying v back in 1977 and it took a year for the repair.
So much love for Alex and Rush. Next level musical geniuses and such lovely people to boot. Those three guys did something very special.
Rush "Signals" Tour @ the Summit Houston Tx, best concert I've ever seen☆
I started reading the comments on this. So many like minds...
I’m awed by very few people in this world, but Alex Lifeson is one of them. Everyone else has already said why...
Total legend.
Good to see the legend in all his glory and yet humbleness ! Thanks for the interview...
THE GREATEST GUITARIST EVER!!! If not certainly my favourite!!
One of the biggest things that impacts me regarding the members of Rush is just how humble and down to earth the guys are. Just really great human beings.
All three of them. They are more "Canadian" than other Canadians are.
Another awesome Canadian.... gotta get over there and drink the water. Bless up Big Al. A fan since '76
Alex is one of my favorite players. Every time I pick up a guitar I play a bit of his solo on Presto. Such a wonderful player.
I hope Alex and Geddy are doing ok. They had such a rough year.
I'm out of the loop. What happened?
@@Aizenvsanyonedontmix Oh man. Neil Peart passed away last January.
@@Aizenvsanyonedontmix Neil's Dad and Geddy's Mom both passed away in the past month and a half
I'm sorry yo hear that!
I cannot express how grateful I am for this. My favourite guitar player and my favourite guitar channel.
Glad you enjoy it!
@@andertons your content is one of the last bastions of decency on UA-cam. Everything else decays into arguments about all sorts. The worst the comments get is arguing over relic’d guitars… (they’re brilliant).
I was stunned to see this.
Alex and Rush are one of the many reasons why I’m happy to be from Toronto, definitely a great player and one of my favourite guitarist
Hands down the best live band ive ever witnessed, 5 rows from the front Globen in Stockholm R 30 gig . They were having so much fun up there making it look easy , so much talent , epic.
Rush was simply the best at everything they did, would have loved a chance to see them live but obviously isn't going to happen now. Glad he and Geddy are both staying busy, even if they don't collaborate with each other. The new Les Paul looks amazing, I'm not one for signature gear but this has my eye.
Fantastic CAPTAIN LEE👍 ALEX LIFESON, so incredibly talented and humble at the same time. Tremendous Guitar Master.
Couldn't agree more!
Alex doesn't know this, but he taught me how to play guitar. Figuring out what he was doing on _Fly By Night_, _2112_, and _Permanent Waves_ was my basis for rhythm and lead playing.
Same here but the albums I attempted to learn were Caress of Steel & Hemispheres. Lifeson is a tough guy to play and it is the reason cover bands never try to play Rush. 9 out of ten cover bands would choose to play Steely Dan rather than embarass themselves trying to play Rush.
yournot alone there , been trying to master la villa strangiato for 40 years
@@fullclipaudio I think some of Steely Dan's stuff is a little out there and advanced; with elements of jazz and fusion. Very difficult to cover a lot of their music.
@@doosworld1901 Yup and you still hear more Steely Dan covers than Rush.
@@fullclipaudio I always thought it was the vocals that make rush impossible to cover, especially early rush... "We are the priests...."
I love listening to Alex talk about guitars, even though I have no idea what he’s talking about. His joy and knowledge is so endearing!
Alex!…huge fan…he plays stuff that is just flat out more fun to try to emulate than just about anyone
We NEED a deep dive interview in house with Alex!!
The most underrated guitarist of all time
I like how The Captain interviews artists.
Such an underappreciated guitar player. Part of the greatest trio of musicians that started my love for rock music way back as far as 2112 in '76. Such a nice guy. Legend.
Alex is my all-time greatest music hero and inspiration. I can't explain how much his playing has connected with me and brought joy through so many moments in my life. Not to mention his ever-changing playing style and guitar tones that make for a constant influence on my own playing. It's one of my biggest dreams to meet him and thank him. My dad is building a replica of the guitar Alex used on the Distant Early Warning music video for my 21st birthday which im so excited for. Though Alex's Epiphone being announced at the same time is a little bittersweet XD
What a great chat, what a legend.
I like Alex as a musician and a human being. His riffs are always tasteful and interesting and he’s a humble bloke despite his massive skills. He exudes quiet confidence and doesn’t beat people half to death with obnoxious ego raves like some other (and mostly lesser) musos.
I'm guessing that by "other musos" you are referring to people like Gene Simmons LOL
This man supplied me with the most incredible soundtrack to my life.....my favourite player and always will be.....incredible player and a fantastic human being too.....thank you Alex.
Simply a legend.
Lee looked like he was in the presence of greatness, Alex the dalai lama of rock!
You cant imagine how long I‘ve waited for this episode. Thanks, Captain Lee - and sorry I had to get my Epi signature from another place. Customs / tariffs suck. Brexit sucks even more. 😔🇬🇧❤️
Alex is very underrated but will always be one of my favorite guitarists of all time! Seems like a nice guy, very humble.
Alex is and will always be our hero!
I love this musician, he makes me cry in much of their songs, the sound that he has is so unic, powefull, opened, envolved, all around you is turning around when he plays. Great interview, Alex Lifeson is one of the gorgeous guitarrist. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💋💋🎉💋🎉❤️❤️❤️❤️
He is a legend. All the members of RUSH were/are awesome.
I sat behind Alex, Geddy and Neil at a minor league baseball game in Richmond, Va. one time about 30 years ago. I didn't want to bother them so I never said anything to them. I regret not at least saying "thank you."
I got to say thank you to Geddy and Alex on rockline in 07. I cringe hearing myself but its cool I have that
@@Ram-2112 Hey that's cool.
@@Ram-2112 I was on that Rockline too! Asked Alex about his golf handicap just to change it up a bit. It is weird to hear my voice but a dream moment to be treasured.
It is such a pleasure to hear The Captain picking the brain of a Legend and just talking shop! It's amazing!
He's like a kid at Christmas...
What a nice guy, a legend. This made my day.
Lerxst……. What a guy! My favourite guitar player.
I had the privilege of seeing him play live with the Canadian power trio. Wow, just wow!
Love Alex! Seeing RUSH 25+ times wasn’t enough!
Alex is the reason I play guitar … what a talent and good guy so happy he’s making music!
Aaaaahhhhhh! So good to see him popping in more and more these days and staying busy.
Makes me so proud to be Canadian. The nicest, humble and talented people to travel the planet.
I have the utmost respect for Alex Lifeson. His music has been part of my life since I saw Rush in 1975, when my Dad talked me into taking my younger brother to a Kiss concert and they were the openers. I've never liked Kiss and I told him no several times, but my brother begged me to take him because our parents wouldn't let him go without me taking him. So I took him to the concert and I have been a Rush fan ever since.
But I have to disagree about the Epiphone Axcess being an "affordable guitar for beginners." The lowest price I saw for one when I looked them up was $1,500, and many were closer to $2,000. After having several vintage guitars stolen in my life, I now have a Squier by Fender Affinity Fat Strat HSS guitar that I paid $225 for in 2002. The mission at the time was to buy a guitar that thieves wouldn't be interested in, but what I found was a real keeper. I love this guitar. And believe it or not, my girlfriend picked it out.
I was looking at a black one that was otherwise identical to the one I bought that was marked $335. And she pointed at this one, and said "This one is $100 less, and it looks the same, except it's red." I liked the black one, but I thought that for $100 less, I could live with red. Besides, it's a $225 guitar, if I wanted to paint it a different color, it's not a vintage guitar like I always had before. But it's still red 20 years later. The only modification to the guitar is I put locking tuners on it, as I have always done since they came out.
I always loved Epiphone guitars, so I know I would love an Epiphone Axcess. But $1,500 to $2,000 is not what I call an "affordable guitar for beginners." Specially when you can still buy Squiers for close to what I paid for mine 20 years ago. _Those are affordable guitars for beginners._
A class act. Brilliant musician and an amazing person.
Fellow pole
What an amazing gentleman, so polite and genuine.
I love interviews with the Captain, and suddenly of my absolute heros is there with him, I had to watch it immediately. Not to mention I am waiting for that Signature model to arrive in three weeks time. Would love to get the Gibson version, but getting a hold it now without selling the car or perhaps house is close to impossible…. Thank you Captain!
Rewatching this. I am such fan of Alex. He is such a creative and soulful player, but more than that he just seems like a good dude, and a such a hoot.
man the guys you get on your show is impressive. You are making Andertons a modern day pilgrimage site! Bloody well done!
Epiphone inspired by Lifeson 👌🏻🤘🏻🖖🏻
Closer To The Heart lyrics partial rewrite (suitably just after the guitar solo):
"Oh! Woah! You can be The Captain, and I will be the star...""
My favourite player EVER!
That was a wonderfully conducted interview by, Lee. 👏👏👏 To the point, clear and interesting. Congratulations. I wouldn’t have imagined Lee as a Rush fan, though. Alex, as always, is gracious and sincere.Hope stock arrives soon. 👍
I'm a tap dancer too. I have always had the same philosophy as Rush-have a trio in which the minimum amount of band members play the maximum amount of music through whatever gear it takes to achieve a full, articulated sound. At one point I had two Marshall stacks with 4 straight face marshall 4×12 cabs, and twin pedalboards to hold all the pedals, plus an echoplex & Roland guitar synth. Nobody but me handled the pedals onstage.
Now you're gonna hate me. I use a Line 6 Helix with an A.R.T. Extreme distortion pedal that I just slam the front of the Helix with. I still do the tap dance, but I'm totally happy with the tone I get, it's huge and punchy and best of all it's the same every night no matter what venue I'm playing.
The Mighty Alex Lifeson… what a dude. Rush were one of the best bands I've ever seen. Amazing soundscape from a 3 piece.
Man! He’s so down to earth. I must have this guitar!
Alex is tops in my book. His note choice, use of harmonics is amazing
What an amazing exclusive interview. Alex is my all time favourite guitarist. Well done Lee. I would have been a babbling wreck doing this interview 🤟🏻
The most underrated rock guitar player of all time.
Following this channel for the past 12 years, with the exception of Rabea and Pete with their 'Soun Like...' absolute NO MENTION to RUSH.
But now, WE ARE RUSH FANS!
Am I jealous? You're absolte right!
Am I mad?You can bet.
Can't handle hypocresy. But this about selling guitars. I can understand.
Well... What's next? 'We always love chorus+overdirven 80s sounds' because of Mayer, right?
Just 13 minutes, and no question about his craft.
Keep on selling!!
Thanks for this. Yes please try and get Alex in the studio. Very talented. Very unique playing and also hilariously funny!!
so, one day i was driving down the street, and i come to a red light right next to a gold Mercedes, so im stopped at this light waiting for the light to change and im just sort of looking around, nice summer day, and i notice the guy in the Mercedes is actually PLAYING A GUITAR WHILE HES DRIVING STEERING WITH HIS KNEES, and then he notices me seeing this and gets this really nervous look on his face like im going to blow him in to the cops
now im an amature guitar player myself and ive actually done the driving around playing thing myself so just to let him know i wasn't going to blow him in i gave him the thumbs up, seeing that and obviously relived he rolled down his window and played this sick solo for me. i was actually shocked to hear how good this guy actually was, he was PHENOMINAL, so im amused as shit and we are laughing together the light finally changes and wave and roll on our separate ways,
about three miles later i realized it was Alex Lifeson, i dont know why i didn't recognize him at the time, it could not have been more obviously him
he looked just like he looked in this video
Love Alex so much I named my son after him.
I have seen Rush 5x's = Phenomenal guitarist. Alex is Lazer-precision Live. He has been a tremendous influence & inspiration for me. Not only a great musician, but a down-to-earth, humble-guy, with great character. He is one-of The Best . . . to ever do it. oNe LovE from NYC
“I never trusted anyone to make my mistakes for me”! What a humble and honest human being! Sir! The world is a better place because of your existence! Thank you for that.
"I didn't trust anybody to make my mistakes for me!" That's funny stuff!
Is there anything more beautiful than a brand new shiny guitar? The Gibson Les Paul is such a beautiful guitar.
Alex Lifeson such a legend ,ordered mine a month ago
YOUR VERY OWN ALEX LIFESON!?!
Whenever talk of RUSH comes up, Geddy's and Neil's names always come up. It's as if people don't realize RUSH had a guitarist! While Geddy and Neil deserve EVERY kudo, award and recognition they've received - it's Alex's guitar work that has drawn me to RUSH since their first album first came out! He has inspired me to learn to play guitar and, simultaneously, frustrates me with the instrument! At my best I couldn't even play as well as he probably did a few weeks after he started! In my book - He's THE BEST !!!
One of the coolest interviews. So relaxed.
I bought an Epiphone 335 last year after watching a blindfold comparison between Gibson and Epiphone copies. The blindfolded guy thought he was playing the Gibson 335 when he was playing the Epiphone 335. He liked it a little better than the Gibson. It came out of the box ready to play. No setup needed. Very nice guitar.
Nice interview, I have been an Alex Lifeson fan since the 70's, a fantastic and imaginative guitar player. My first guitar was a black Les Paul copy because he played one.
Such an incredible player and a huge influence on the bands that I love, which made me go back and discover Rush back in about 2000. I was a generation late but I'm so glad I caught up!! What a band, what a guy and what a great interview.
First song I learned all the way through on guitar was a Rush song. Thanks for the video
Wow, rock royalty right there, well done to Lee for not freezing or turning into a jibbering wreck as I probably would have done!👍👍👏👏👏🎶🎶🎶
It would be an honour to meet 'Big Al' as we call him here in Canada! I've had the privilege of seeing Rush about 4 nit mes and never once saw them do a bad show! I know people who have met Al and all say he's trul a good guy And he even know of my younger brother who is known in southern Ontaro, How cool is that?
My original guitar hero. That man is the one that got me interested in guitar over all other instruments. Neal almost did for drumming but I could never own his kit the way I grew up. The best rhythm player in rock
