Ep 2 of the Budget Lux Build is going to the next level! We're going to start looking at more serious mods to get this beast further off-road, and make it more bush proof. We are filming in a couple of weeks time - tell us what mods you think we should do to it and we'll throw the best ideas on it next episode!
Enjoy Matt co-presenting on these episodes. Jocko more himself ,rather than trying to keep up with Sean and Graeme's humour. Makes for a nice change ,and, some great production value in my opinion. Well done lads.
@@danieladdamo9132 all of them are good mate but... Shaun is like the guy who wants that expensive gear and no one really can afford it... Graham is getting a bit too much like this all the flashing gear and stuff glad is till stay on 32 tho! Jokoo is the one who show you you don't need the expensive shit to get out there and I like that!!!
Husband and daughter asleep! It’s 12:30 am in Seattle and I have to be up at 6:00am to get the day started. Saw a notification for this video.....now sitting in the garage next to my 4X4 watching it so I don’t wake up the house! What other girls out there are as nuts about wheeling as me?? That thing is a little beast! Can’t wait for the next episode! And I say lower gearing is a must. ❤️🐞
Good to see jocko NOT trying to be super funny, so much more watchable when he sticks to his strengths of being super knowledgeable and capable. Good vid look forward to the next 👍
Hi guys, i was owner a Hiace 95 2L and now i have a Hilux 2003 5L, and when a wake up and see the truck in garage i wake up with a smile. Greetings from Argentina! and good project
Oh man, you guys sure make me smile. reminds me of my youth! I had an '81 with leaf springs and 33" way back in the day. enjoy the crap out of your channel and the pony build is my favorite so far... ah the good old days.
Reduction gears will do wonders for the pony. BRAKES. Something almost everyone who lifts a lux (and many other vehicles) forgets to do, Adjust the load proportioning valve rod on the rear diff. Lengthening the rod opens the valve allowing more pressure to the breaks. Lifting the vehicle closes the valve and is why many luxes fail the rego break tests.
So jocko, What your telling me is that you DONT need 100k and the entire superior catalogue to be capable off-road!? Oh my! Go the toyotas, best model hilux, especially the mighty tractor motor!
The little Luxy/pony that grew up and became a monster. What a very capable vehicle now. Always a first mod of tyres and lift which helps, but without those lockas it'd struggle. Keen to see whats next on the build
Jocko luv ya work. The work you are doing on the Hilux is realistic and has a strict budget, and doing it at home with standard tools, shows what can be done by us plebs.
Budget offroading is super fun. My 98 V6 Pajero has factory lockers, a snorkel and 31 inch mud tyres (no winch) and so far it goes pretty much anywhere I want.
honestly so happy youse got one of the best budget 4wds around and to be doing a build up serious on it is even better, being a massive hilux fan and jocko fan is also a bonus, id like to see the pony raptored and have 2' body lift thrown under her with a roof tray fitted up with terralume loghts, a new exhaust wouldnt go astray either, with the towbar issue should put on a custom rear bar with a swing away tyre carrier also, hope this gives you a few good ideas but so far loving the build up, keep up the good work!
for the stuck towball, first try heating up the outside with a blowtorch for the metal to expand a bit, then attach it via a snatch strap to something sturdy. then send it!
Awesome content... And loving the budget build.. Especially giving some idea on the cost(s) each steps of the way... Next mod should be a NC state plate and sitting in my driveway!! But seriously.. Wish we had kept getting the straight axle lux's here in the states... Next mod(s) should be gearing and some sliders...
This is a great series. I loved this show for so long but it was just eye candy for me as I have a family and just a small amount of allowance to buy a truck and fit it out for overlanding. My idea was a budget gen 2 4runner and do what I can over the years. After seeing your lux build I am chewing at the bit and early next year is my chance to buy and get started. It's been great to see what mods I can get the most out of and get me to those rare spots I've been missing out on. Been dreaming through covid and am ready to get back outdoors and traveling again! Great series Jocko! Keep up the great work brother. Best Regards from Texas!
To get the tow ball off, why not lay an oil pan under in, then tape down a bunch of plastic around it. Spray it down with a lot of penetrating oil, then wrap the plastic around it, fill it some more. After it sits for a few days, and probably some extra applications you could remove the ball, hammer it a few more times, the hook it to an anchor and give it little stiff pulls with the throttle. Only a few feet yank. Or you could work a few pulleys and use your wince to tug it.
11:10 you can "increase" CoG - by raising or lowering it, it's better described as moving it fore or aft - like an aircraft. In vehicles, it's better described as centre of mass, which is high or low. If you put an elephant on your roof rack, that's high CoM. Bolt lead plates to the underside of your vehicle, that's low centre of mass.
I had to take the hitch receiver off my truck and put it into a press earlier this summer to get the ball hitch to come out. Even had to press out the hitch retainer pin. The assy had been on the truck for 14 yrs :).
If you could get there on your 29"s or whatever they were, and Graham could hang with an IFS rig on 33s, I figure you can climb just about anything reasonable, and some stuff that isn't with a 'Lux twin locked on 33s. This build is perfect. Exactly how I like to build up a rig, and proof that you don't need all of the kit to have a more than capable rig.
Hi Jocko loving the Pony lux project. I think good next mods would be rock sliders to reduce panel damage and instead of changing diff gears, put low ratio transfer case gears in. This will retain road performance/noise/revs (such as it is on these!) and give a huge improvement in rock crawling. Oh yeah- and guard flares be good too! Lol
With my sons Hilux tow bar, we balanced a Big Electric Jackhammer on a trolley jack. It still took a while, bit buy bit we got it. Make sure to use hearing protection. ( very loud ) Hope this helps.
Love the pony makes me miss my ln106 I had 2 inch lift and 33s on it open diff and could still keep up with mates patrols. Can’t wait to see more of the pony
There's a way to save your towbar and just sacrifice the hitch. Cut the tongue of the hitch off then segment the remaining part. Smash it with chisels until it peels away from the receiever. Did this to a prado towbar, took a while but worth it.
Loved the video, don’t know if it was the camera angle, but the tyres of the pony lux did appear to hang outside of the guards a little. I’d be a bit worried about a defect notice getting slapped on with that, so I’d recommend a set of wheel flares to get those tyres nice and safe and keep ol’ PC Plod off your case. Keep it up, can’t wait to see what’s next.
Bloody awesome. Currently doing up my own ponylux, and stoked to see the mods I’ve done so far are in line with yours. Very interested to see what brake upgrades you do. Awesome stuff, lads
I'd go for the pony lux, because the joy of owning and operating a cheap and to some extent capable rig that you can throw around a bit without caring much about little scratches or dents can not be compared to anything else. Owning a mighty (to be read expensive) vehicle will always come with the stress associated to inherent repair bills. Going into the bush means unwinding, got enough things to worry about related to city life, don't need 'em to follow me into the wild.
I had the same problem with my tow ball. The only way I could remove it was to cut it out. I first cut the inner tow ball insert off completely, just behind the outer tow ball socket. Then used a reciprocating saw to cut some slices in the walls of the inner towball insert. Then it all came out easy. Had to replace the tow ball insert obviously. But the job was done.
Jocko you're full legend status in my book, but why on earth did you spend any of such a limited budget on lights? and i wish you'd spent the money on new tires and made do with the old wheels. seems silly to buy stuff that adds nothing to the performance. i still love everything about this channel (other than the ridiculous name change) so huge props for the top notch entertainment!
Look at Marlin 4.7 gears for the transfer case. Also hook a winch to the ball hitch and loop it back and forth 3 times. It will pull it out or tear the truck in half
would ya consider a skid plate from the bully to under front dif? to protect the dif, steering & shocks. mebbe 3/16" stainless plate with holes to drain mud etc out & keep the weight down a tad. when ya hack off the full towbar, mebbe a rear winch fitted between the chassis rails, with the roller guide coming out where the # plate would sit.
I'm glad this little lux is getting more love. The tires were much needed. I anticipate seeing ring and pinion work the next time but I've been really curious for my owner budget 4wd building if a twin t case setup would maybe do more for less of the whole budget.
Would not mind seeing shauno doing a bit of a budget build with ol darryl with the same rules as the pony then doing a face off after completing both the pony and darryl. Would get around a few iron jacks and watch that all day i reckon!
I have an old ln106r luxy thats having a 2 inch lift put on tomorrow, i already have 33s so seeing how well the luxy did in this video is making me dead excited to test it out 😍
Yeah the pony! 🦄 Good stuff guys keep it up, try taking the whole towbar frame off and take it to someone with a decent hydraulic press and press it out had to do it to my 80 series after trying all the stuff use tried
Well ya did do Lockers and lights together....But some how lift and tires missed the first cut...was that intentional to show the capability or was it simply budget? Really like this episode...Great for those first timers doing a first build!!! cant wait for the next one!!!

T-Case reduction gearing for sure.

80 series cvs for some added strength allow you to wheel a bit harder.
