  • Does what it says on the tin. Over the years I've tested all the main ultra wide-angle zoom lenses for Canon's APS-C cameras, including the third party ones. They've all been tested from slightly different positions, so here's a slightly more informal video of my findings.
    It's pretty hard to choose and ultra wide-angle zoom lens, because most of them are good, but in different ways. All I can do is give you my favourite couple of lenses and leave the rest down to you!

    Great selection of lenses. Your photos demonstrate that great photos depend more on the person's abilities than it does on the equipment. Kudos to you on the composition, lighting colors, and collecting and organizing all the information for the video.

    I have always followed your videos Christopher. And you have been of great help informing us of details you review on. When I first saw your Sigma 8-16mm review, it has been on my wish list since. Was lucky enough that I was able to get one for a second hand for just USD329.00, mint condition. Seemed like the first owner did not know how maximize its use and gave up photography. Presently saw all his gears are for sale from a used camera gear online website. Consistently, as you said, its sharp and I have validated all your tests! You tend to smile after you have taken a shot instead of a hovering question marks above your head :) Thank you for being there sharing your insights and reviews. With high regards.

    Christopher, this is a very good comparison review!
    Thanks a lot!
    I purchased the Canon 10-18 recently.
    I am very happy with it. Although at wide open apertures it causes hefty vignetting, at f/8 it is awesome. Moreover the 'IS' helps you with 4-stop stabilization! Simply incredible!
    Even with f/8, you can catch up with shutter speeds of lenses with f/2.8 (that is exactly 4 stops!).
    Excellent value and best price / performance!

    Have had my sigma f3.5 for years and really enjoy it. Comparing it to the canon 10-18, The autofocus, build quality and low light ability is superior. And the sharpness at higher focal length is definitely as good as the canon. It just gets a little soft at the edges when you drop it to f3.5. But the main thing is the build quality, it’s a solid piece of kit.

    I bought the Tokina 11-16 and I really like it. It's probably the best lens I've ever had, as far as optical and build quality. The only thing I don't like is the AF, which isn't enough accurate to be trusted each and every time, as I do with all my Canon lenses. Years ago I tried the Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 and it was awful, it was ok in the center, but boy the conrners were unusable, and I tried on a less demanding 450D APS-C sensor; I can't imagine how bad can it be on a 24MP sensor...

    Among your videos I did not see a review of the Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124 AF Pro DX, I've been using one of those and while it's OK it's not especially great. For a filmmaker it's probably excellent, but that sliding ring for focus is a little frustrating on a DSLR, I end up finding my focus shifts when trying to switch between modes.
    There's a supposedly used low-use Canon 10-22mm locally available for $300, no hood. Given that it's been a few years since this comparison video was made, would you still look at the Canon 10-22mm as an excellent choice for DSLR and mirrorless, or does some newer lens for ultra wide angle appeal more now? If It matters I'm using a 24MP 77D and am considering getting an M50 for my wife. My principal use is indoors during the day. While f/3.5 isn't wonderful it's better than the 10-18mm and where I'd be using it, having as much zoom as possible would be handy for taking semi-candid family photos while still being able to zoom-out as my subjects get really close to me.

    Hi, Christopher. First of all, thank you very much for the so incredible and systematic work you do in this videos. You are my first reference when I update my equipment little by little and nowadays I'm thinking on buying the Canon EF-S 10-18. Let me ask you a question that worries me: a second information I use is the well-known dxomark tests and, in the case of the Canon EF-S 10-18, it gets a very poor performance in terms of sharpness. What are these people doing? Your images on the corners demonstrate the opposite. Have you any explanation? Thanks a lot!!!

    • @christopherfrost

    I ended up with the Sigma 10-20mm F4 lens. Maybe not the greatest lens, but I still have a lot of fun with it on my Nikon APS-C camera. It was a tough call, but I almost went with the Sigma 8-16mm lens. Now that was a fun lens, but the practical side of me decided to go for the 10-20mm.

    • @christopherfrost

      Thanks Chris! I actually got a chance to sample the Tokina for a morning and in comparison tests with my 10-18 I actually think the 10-18 performs better. As you say the Tokina's main selling point is the 2.8 but I have the Sigma 17-70 f2.8 (again thanks to you) so I don't think I need a super wide angle fast lens as well. The CA on the Tokina is horrendous granted 99% of this can be removed in photoshop.

    Fisrt of all I would like to thank you for this video and all the other videos that your making, very helpful and getting a clearer idea on what I'm looking for.
    Would you please if you have some time make other videos for all best lenses types for aps-c canon cameras??
    Here you have covered the wide and ultra-wide angle, I saw the fast standard lens as well, but didn't find one for telephoto, super telephoto lenses comparison.
    Thank you for your efforts.
    May God bless you.
    Cheers.

      I don't currently have time for too many comparison videos I'm afraid but maybe sometime in the future :-)

    I'm still searching for a ultra wide angle lens for video. So i need one with image stabilization like the Canon 10-18mm. But an aperture of only 4.6 is a big down point.
    Anyone has any recommendation for me?

      Tamron have a new 10-24mm lens coming out with image stabilization

    Chris, always love your vids! If the Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 can be had for around the same price of the Canon 10-18, you'd still get the Canon wouldn't you?

    • @christopherfrost

      +CVonC Yup! The Canon is a far better lens (although the Sigma has slightly nicer build quality)

    Hi I'm using Canon 77D. I'm looking for a wide angle len with small budget. By the way, i'm really interested Canon 10-22 f3.5 and Sigma 10-20 f3.5. Could you recommend one of these? Thanks.

    Hello, Chris!
    Do you mind making a review for Tokina 12-28mm versus the Tokina 12-24mm? I sold my Canon 10-18mm as I tend to swap it out to another lens when I feel limited to its 18mm range.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  8 років тому +1

      +soundofenigma I'm tempted to test the 12-28, but it'll be a little while as I have a lot of other lenses to cover first

    Would you choose sigma 10-20 f3.5 or tokina 11-20 2.8 for video work? The tokina is more expensive, but is it also that much better?

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  5 років тому +1

      If you're shooting manual focus, the Tokina with its brighter aperture. If you need autofocus the Sigma's AF motor will be a bit quieter

    Hi Christopher! Thank you for the great video.
    I am looking to buy a new gear next month and I've been very confused about what to buy. My old setup was a Canon Xti with Canon EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye that I use for skydiving. I am going to buy the Canon EOS Rebel T6i and for lens I am between: Tokina 10-17mm F/3.5-4.5 DX Autofocus Fisheye, Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM or the Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM, but this would be my last option since the price is double of the other, also double of the weight and is only f/4. What would be the best option? Should I just keep the Canon EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye? Which I don't see much wider when using with my xti.
    Thank so much.
    Peace

      +BrazilianShark AF isn't that important on a fisheye lens, really. I think there is a Sigma 10mm f/2.8 fisheye lenses available with AF though

    Hey! Just a quick question - is the Tokina 11-16 in this review the mark II version? Big fan of the review style, by the way.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  8 років тому

      +OhLookTopComment I think it was the Mark i...I can't remember to be honest! They're both virtually the same, apparently

    • @OhLookTopComment
      @OhLookTopComment 8 років тому +1

      +Christopher Frost Photography The reason I ask is that the specific difference seems to be an improved nano coating that greatly reduces lens flare, which was the major complaint mentioned in the optics portion. Since the zoom range won't affect me very much for what this lens would be doing, and with the sharpness and otherwise strong optics for currently ~ $400 on amazon, it seems like quite an attractive option since I intend on also buying a high end polarizing filter. I'm just a tad worried if the flare on the mark II isn't quite as improved as I had maybe thought.

    Is metal better than plastic? In low temperatures I prefer plastic. There is plastic and plastic and high grade superplastic.

    For the Sigma 8-16mm's price, you can get the Canon 10-18 and a Samyang 8mm fisheye. Now that's a nice combo for going ultra-wide. I have the Canon 10-18 and it's a great lens. I'm planning to buy the Samyang 8mm fisheye.
    Very nice video comparison.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  9 років тому

      Cristian Stancu That's a good point! Although remember, the fisheye lens obviously gives a lot of distortion, which is intentional. With the Sigma 8-16 lens, straight lines remain straight.

    • @CristianStancu
      @CristianStancu 9 років тому

      Christopher Frost Photography Yes, that's true. I guess it is great to have a 8mm rectilinear lens. Although you could straighten the 8mm fisheye image, with a bit of processing, if needed.
      I would definitely like to have both lenses in my bag.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  9 років тому

      Cristian Stancu You could stretch the images, but of course there would be lower image quality. But yeah, I agree, I'd much rather have the 10-18 and Samyang 8mm myself :-)

      Flashdaddy1 A polarising filter might be helpful. These Tokina lenses are good - but another nice option would be the Canon 10-18mm STM. Watch my ultra wide-angle lens comparison video for more ideas!
