By popular demand: The 10 Sharpest APS-C Lenses for 2019

  • I decided to launch this lens a few weeks early in order to help people with their Christmas lists! And it's a video made by popular demand. If you want to see the video about full-frame lenses, here it is: • The 10 Sharpest Lenses...
    These are:
    1) APS-C lenses I've tested (and I mostly test on Canon and Sony gear, and some Fuji lenses (more to come!) so sorry, but no Nikon, Micro 4/3 etc.)...
    2) ...which cost under £1,000 GBP (approx. $1,300 US)
    FAQ's:
    q) Where is the Sigma 16/30/56mm f/1.4? a) Haven't tested them yet...although that is due to change soon.
    q) Where is my favorite Fuji lens? a) I refer you to my previous answer ;-)
    q) Why haven't you tested any Nikon lenses? a) I've answered this question many times - it's basically just a lack of time. I love Nikon equipment but I simply don't have time to test lenses on every camera system. I had to draw a line somewhere, so in future I'll be reviewing lenses from all different manufacturers which are available on Canon, Sony and Fuji cameras. I may be reviewing the new Nikon full-frame lenses in the future - I certainly want to - it depends on if I can get the Patreon funds together to hire a Z7 and the lenses.

    All pictures and footage shot by me on Canon 60D, 70D, and EOS M3 cameras, and Sony a7R II, a6300 and a5100 cameras.

    FYI, a Canon EF-S user cannot go wrong buying the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 pancake lens. It's a very sharp ~35mm equivalent prime and the only gripe anyone should ever have with it is the slow focus speed. It weighs practically nothing, the quality (at f/2.8 even!) is undeniable, the focal length makes it a great all-around prime, it's pretty cheap, and it's freaking f/2.8!

    • @666Tomato666
      @666Tomato666 5 років тому +5

      f/2.8 is dark, sorry, Canon spoiled us with the nifty-fifty
      but even in absolute terms, f/2.8 is just one stop more than the typical kit lens at the wide end

      @JodyBruchon 5 років тому +11

      @@666Tomato666 No, f/2.8 is not dark. Most lenses that can reach f/2.0 or better are also not the sharpest at those apertures. Unless you're buying very expensive lenses, f/2.8 is where most fast lenses reach maximum sharpness. One stop is double the light, requiring half the ISO and noise for the same exposure, and you're hand-waving that? I own the EF 50mm f/1.8 and while it's a sharp lens, it's not some sort of magic low-light wand and its maximum sharpness is not at or near f/1.8. It's also an 80mm on APS-C which is a telephoto focal length and not practical for most casual shooting scenarios.

      @jportrait1100 5 років тому +3

      Jody Bruchon he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.. 2.8 is not dark. I have the 24 pancake on my sl2 & it’s a really nice setup. I wanted something compact that I can carry around & I find my self taking way more pics bc it’s lightweight & it’s a sharp lens. I also have the 55-250 on this list & it’s a great lens

      @@derekderekderek2 and EF-S 24mm f/2.8 is not a zoom, it's a prime
      @UCZNy_u_bnCCfalW-XBFUaCw not all lenses are their sharpest at f/2.0, but there are plenty that are. Yes you need half the ISO, but the noise falls logarithmically with ISO, halving it likely won't even reduce the noise by 10%. The bigger problem is the lack of background separation, this you can't work around by manipulating other settings. And yes, 50 mm is telephoto on APS-C, but it has the price, aperture and sharpness I expect from a non-super-telephoto lens. 24mm one is almost 2 stops slower. At least it doesn't have the insane price of the EF-S 35mm.

      Hi YTG, the Fujinon lens test charts on E-photozine will give you some idea of the relative merits of the Fujinon range, but because the range is still quite small and mostly very modern and all of very high build quality and performance you can be fairly sure that whichever lens you choose you will not be disappointed. I am currently the owner and user of at least ten fuji lenses and where there is a choice as between the 18-55 versus the 16-55 2,8 I now only ever use the later one because it is sharper, faster, better focusing, etc etc also twice the price!. One of my other favourites is the 10-24, just fabulous wide angle for landscapes, I just wish I could afford this new 8-16 F2.8!. In the end they are all brilliant but each of them has its special advantages, which ones you get depends on what you want to do, the more expensive lenses are certainly worth the extra money, if you can afford them. None of the reviews have really shown these lenses at their best, one of the reasons that the Fujifilm system is gaining such respect is that the cameras are capable of exceptional output, easily matching and in some cases surpassing Full Frame options, especially those with anti-aliasing filters and their cheaper lenses, the sort of resolution that really you cant see on a normal computer!. Cheers, Richard.

    Ha is for doing this review Chris. Crop shooters get left out all the time, but when you’re talking “value for money” and you’re more interested in taking photos than collecting trophy gear, it’s really hard to beat a carefully assembled APS-C camera system- particularly if you’re using a Sony E-mount camera (just for the ability to use Canon and Nikon mount DSLR lenses). I was totally shocked by the EF-S 55-250mm recommendation. How is that lens not terrible? Wow! I will check it out. Probably the most surprising lens recommend in recent memory.

    My APS-C travel kit is built around an EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM, an EF-S 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS STM and an EF-S 10-18 f/4.5-5.6 IS STM. The 1990 vintage EF 50 f/1.8 and a Sigma 4.5mm f/2.8 fisheye are also usually in the corners of the old tamrac bag.
    Chris put Canon's EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM at the top of the fast standard zoom competition several years ago, though he did warn that some copies of that lens were reputed to suffer from excessive dust inhalation and/or early Image Stabilization system failure. Though Sigma's more recently introduced 18-35 f/1.8 lens seems to have a generally acknowledged advantage in lens speed and pure sharpness, that Sigma lacks image stabilization. As a slightly wobbly septuagenarian I still prefer the stabilized option, and I haven't noticed any dust or IS problems with my particular copy of the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM.

    I actually commented on the Full Frame 2019 sharpest lenses video, I had no idea you had made an aps-c top 10 as well, excellent work. I have the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 and it really is an incredible lens. My only grip with it is that it doesn't go to 16mm which is really one of my preferred focal lengths but after watching your review on the Samyang 16mm F2, I went for that and have that covered very nicely so its not a big deal. Two outstanding lenses right there really. The only thing I can really add is that the Sigma 50-100mm is only available in Sigma, Canon and Nikon mounts. There is no Sony version of it that I am aware of (although mirrorless adapters will make it work on e-mount bodies). I'm not picking faults though, really enjoyed your comparison video.

      Good lens no doubt from all the reviews I have seen. It was a little over priced for me when I was looking to buy one used so I picked up a 28-105mm USM and have been very happy with the picture quality. It’s not the sharpest lens but there’s nothing wrong with that. Some lenses have a character and the focal range is perfect for my shooting style. I also have the 55-250mm IS STM and get to try it today once my camera arrives via USPS. I had to order a used 50D to tide my cravings for picture taking because my canon 5D classic broke...mirror fell off.

    Hi Christopher, glad to hear you're reviewing more fuji lenses in the future, can I suggest you try my favourite fuji lens, the bokehlicious XF90 f2, it costs a little more than half of the xf80 2.8 OIS Macro and it may not beat the 80 Macro for sharpness, but it'll be interesting to see how it compares to the Samyang 85 1.8.

    Christopher, Any chance you might be able to get and test some of the Nikon APS-C lenses, in particular the 16-80 f2.8-f4 VR, so we could get a sense for how they compare with the other ones you've tested? I'm considering switching from Canon back to Nikon for its more impressive sensor performance and metering. But i struggle with what sort of lenses to pair up with any of those Nikon DX bodies. Thanks for all your tests, they are extremely helpful! Craig

    PHILOSOPHY: MODERN-OPTICS GOLDEN-RULE FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT UNDERSTAND
    You can (re)design a prime lens to ‘dial’ out most all of the chromatic aberration, potential flare, distortion, and likewise
    increase its corner to corner resolving power by adding many more corrective lens elements. However in so doing it is
    absolutely necessary to wreak havoc upon the divine characteristics of the native simplex prime lens and greatly destroy much
    of its depth, bandwidth, saturation, & microcontrast (image fidelity) so vital for B&W photography, & likewise its collective
    multiplicative excellent properties, in order to render incredible true images with both pleasing contrast, & much more.
    What you are then left with in this “improved design” of a modern lens, is a prime lens with the same negative attributes
    and trade-offs of as a zoom lens whose range covers the same F.O.V. as the newly designed prime lens. This then therefore
    becomes a useless prime lens with all of the disadvantages of a zoom lens’ rendering and none of the remarkable advantages
    that make an exquisite prime lens between 35mm and 600+mm which is so desirable & the reason why people pay excessive
    amounts of money to acquire the most perfect prime focal length glass.
    An overdesigned prime lens is literally the deconstruction of the very definition (of the advantages) of a prime lens. All lens
    design is a compromise; no exception to this rule exists. You cannot have extreme mobility (speed) & safety at the same time,
    for example, someone locked in a bunker and entirely safe with no mobility, or someone entirely mobile but at risk in lack of
    safety.

    In my personal experience. The sigma art 18-35 and the sigma art 50-100 are great lenses. I do have the Canon 10-18mm that I used to shoot on my M50 and my 80d crop sensor cameras. I've always got good results with the first 2 lenses but the Canon 10-2-18 mm I got a lot and I mean a lot of chromatic aberration. I even use that lens on my Canon EOS R and still have the same issues

      I have the 10-18mm as well, and only keep it because I really want an ultra wide lens (and, as I'm considering to switch systems, I don't want to buy new lenses before that). For me it gives mixed results. Many of the landscape pictures seem to be slightly out of focus (which is not even physically possible at f5 upwards, unless the lens is focussed to the closest point possible!)... Still many images, mainly when there's not a lot of light, look very soft.
      On the other hand I did get a few VERY sharp pictures (edge to edge sharpness, once the chromatic aberration is removed) with it, mainly in situations with sunlight and a lot of contrast.

      I somewhat agree with that. I get good results with the Canon 10-18mm for landscape pictures mostly when I put the camera on a tripod and focus manually using the 5X or 10X magnification with the Live viewfinder. When I do that, my pics are quite sharp!
