DmC: Devil May Cry is ironically a game that probably would've been remembered much better if it *wasn't* made to be a DMC reboot. Most people who tried it liked the combat, and the story was... well, not very good, but it had its occasional charms. It just labored under the burden of trying very hard not to be DMC and failing to establish its own identity.
I agree. DmC wasn't a bad game, it just wasn't a good Devil May Cry game. And that lead developer taking a shit on fans of the original games didn't help it either. It being a reboot was the worst thing to happen to it.
@@rainofkhandaq6678 Nah I agree with the other guy, DmC was a deliberate departure from the other Devil May Cry games, made at the direction of executives that were ashamed of the corny, tongue-in-cheek direction the series had taken. They wanted something darker, more "mature," more in line with what was seen as appealing to western audiences. And, as with many stories driven by marketing and executive mandate, the result is a story of half-measures that wants to be a Devil May Cry game while also being a major departure from Devil May Cry, and failing at both.
Noisia were insane audio engineers. Like, they weren't just an amazing trio of artists, they just knew how to fill the soundscape of their music. They've since disbanded since 2022. I miss them a lot.
Lilith's Club is a stage in the game, and the level itself is dynamic. It's a bit hard to explain but stages in the game take place in a "parallel world" where everything is visually distorted, and so is her club in this case. In-game it basically keeps getting grittier, darker and more distorted the further into the club you go (which is how the song is structured here as well). Not really a boss/battle song per se but you do find enemies along the way. Feed The Fire, on the other hand, is a battle theme by Combichrist. As you might've pieced together, the game was structured so that Noisia did most of the music for stages, cutscenes and bosses, and Combichrist did the music for common or bigger battles. As for your confusion on the title, DmC: Devil May Cry (2013) is a reboot of the series, which is why you might have had trouble tracking down info on the game at first. Basically, Capcom approached a western developer and told them to do something almost entirely different, including reworking the gameplay and redesigning Dante and Vergil. Some fans despise it, some like it gameplay-wise but the unanimous opinion is that Dante's redesign is one of the worst things they did here (he is indeed the character you paused on at the end of the video) and which got them massive backlash, so much so that DMC 5 was released years later, effectively dropping the reboot chronology in the process. In my personal opinion, the Definitive Edition of DmC is a very good game with great gameplay and an ok story. I don't mind Dante's redesign but the backlash at the time was 100% warranted because it was deemed as a massive F you to the fans, but I think as time went on people did come to realize it's got some pretty neat gameplay (DMC5 even took some gameplay mechanics straight from it).
The artist Noisia, who made this soundtrack, have some banging electronic stuff so definitely check out their catalogue. They dont make music anymore as a trio but have seperate projects (id recommend checking out Sleepnet) 👍
If you're interested in exploring this game's soundtrack further, I recommend How Old Is Your Soul and Empty, both by Combichrist. Teenage me loved those songs, and they still hold up decently.
I've been hearing more and more over the years how this game is one of the best in the series, gameplay wise. I never dove in, "Dante purist" I guess, just didn't care much either way. Might have to give it a try now if I see it on sale Edit: now. It's on sale now. bye 10 bucks
It's a very good game gameplay wise yes,but it falls short of being truly great and worthy of Devil May Cry standards because of colored enemies required to be hit with same colored weapons, the entirety of Devil May Cry being that you can style on anything and everything with every tools you ever get it's a very annoying mechanic The bosses are not exceptional either but art direction is great even if a bit tainted by that 2010's grey filter and the level design is pretty good
It's a good game, but not a good DMC game. Not just for how they changed the characters and seemed to miss what the fans liked about the series. But because the gameplay is extremely oversimplified. The entire reason the DMC series stands at the top of character action is the high skill ceiling and complexity of things you can perform. Still something to enjoy on it's own if you're fresh into the series tho, wouldn't have minded a sequel either if they just had this parralel with the main series.
Definitely the most controversial game in the franchise, it's still a great game, and a lot of what it did was carried over into Devil May Cr 5. More conservative fans of the franchise will say that it manages to be worse than Devil May Cry 2 (probably one of the worst sequels ever made and one of the worst games on the Ps2). But don't be fooled, this is a great game, and the soundtrack, despite being different from most of the franchise, is still of great quality.
You're right in that the story in dmc is pretty secondary to the gameplay. That said, i think the character work in dmc3 is genuinely great. Dante is still a joke machine, but he has a full arc, and it's a self-contained, satisfying story that explains his motivations as a character.
Nice video! I really enjoyed DmC Devil May Cry for the fresh take it was on the series. I've hoped for a sequel for a long time, but maybe it's better it remains as a standalone entry.
I feel bad for these devs, they made an awesome game, but got so much sh*t because they had the mission of rebooting a popular franchise. Which, granted, is an awful idea. But the poor devs man.
The hate this game got because it was a reboot with a new Dante was very unwarranted. I love DMC 1(have the platinum), 3, 4, & 5, but this game, imo, had the best music, and (here comes the hate) funnest gameplay system. Sure, the combos were easier than most DMC's, but it was just straight fun and a hell of a time! Jesse nailed it: "It seems like they just want you to have a really good time...Just turn it on, get home from work, and just kinda forget about stuff for a while..."
The issue I and many others have with it is that it claimed itself as a reboot for the series nobody ever wanted. Nobody wanted a reboot, we wanted a continuation of the story we already had. I guarantee you if it didn't piggyback off the Devil May Cry IP, it would have been better received. It may have been a good game but it was NOT a good Devil May Cry.
@@mistertaz94 I liked the fresh take a lot. I played 1 and 3 on release as well. The anime Dante was fun, but you see, I was not very interested in 4 and later on 5, and was very hyped with DmC. It's a very solid game, and a very good Devil May Cry game.
@@LowSkillPlays They rebooted the series because other Capcom series' were also being outsourced to western develepoers at the time period from Inafune's push to westernize Capcom titles (something about him saying that japanese game design was outdated). Evidently it became a dark time for Capcom and after Inafune left Capcom backtracked on a lot of his decisions, leading to the return of DMC with DMCV.
I absolutely LOVE DmC. I honestly think the story is better in it than most DMCs and the gameplay is great. The series was rebooted after DMC4 because of the lagging sales, and then after fan backlash to this game they came out with DMC5 which followed up on DMC4 instead of continuing the DmC reboot. That said I think this game is great and underrated. If you don't intend to play the game you should at least look up some of the boss fights because they're arguably the most wild in the whole series.
That is a spicy take. Glad you enjoy the game though when most other people don't. But usually the people that say they like DmC say they like it for the combat. I've never heard anyone say they like the story of DmC
Replayed it recently, story isn't that great. It's more focused on deterring its detractors than telling anything substantive, although it does have its moments here and there. Gameplay is solid, and the soundtrack hits that edgy teen angst just right.
@@Stargazing_night_sky The people who actually played the game do tend to like it, a lot of people wrote it off as soon as it was announced because of the Dante redesign.
