- Knife Making - forging my first feather explosion damascus with Thiers steel
[EN] In this video I finally test my press and make my first feather explosion damascus. When you are self-taught in damascus you say to yourself I understood how he did it but putting it into practice is not so easy! Forging a damascus feather blade is not easy I spent hours watching videos on this subject and once I understood the steps I started, but between theory and practice there is a world! I managed the steps pretty well until I split my damascus ingot in half to give the feather design because the tool I made for myself to split the ingots was too thin and it melted as I went. In addition, my tool was stuck in the ingot, I sweated to get it out and had to cut it again each time. I'm going to have to make myself a stronger tool! but hey, I'm happy with the result because this feather damask is unique.

[FR] Dans cette vidéo je teste enfin ma presse et réalise mon premier Damas plume explosion. Quand on est autodidacte en Damas on se dit tien j’ai compris comment il a fait lui mais le mettre en pratique n’est pas aussi facile ! Forger une lame Damas plume n’est pas de tout repos j’ai passé des heures à regarder des vidéos sur ce sujet et une fois compris les étapes je me suis lancé, mais entre la théorie et la pratique il y a un monde ! j’ai plutôt bien réussi les étapes jusqu’au moment de fendre mon lingot de damas en deux pour donner le dessin de la plume car l’outil que je me suis fabriqué pour fendre les lingots était trop fin et il a fondu a mesure. En plus mon outil restait coincé dans le lingot j’ai sué pour le sortir et j’ai dû le redécouper à chaque fois. Il va falloir que je me fasse un outil plus costaud ! mais bon je suis content du résultat car ce Damas plume est unique.

А чтобы он не растрескивался при расковке в клинок на боковые плоскости можно наварить при сварке разруба тонкие железные пластинки.

Hi! 6:45 I only need one tool to split otherwise the feather pattern would be in both directions. 8:10 I think I crushed too hard which made my soldering burst (I was so happy not to do it by hand anymore that I was too greedy). 15:50 yes it's possible it's a good idea. @@boulderdashforge I was trying to say in order to get the piece off of your chisel splitter, you need a hammer with 2 heads that are a couple inches apart so you hit down evenly from both sides. I was trying to be cute by half.
The only part of the blade I worry about is the hard 90s at the small tang. I never saw a close-up to see if those corners were rounded.

Vraiment classe ! J'aime la répétition du triangle à 3 ou à points. Perso quand je fait du rivetage décoratif (souvent 1mm cuivre ou laiton), je me dis que mater ne suffit pas et qu'il faut aussi coller. Est-ce vraiment nécessaire ? Car je vois que vous ne le faites pas ! Après on est pas sur le même diamètre mais j'imagine que la même logique s'applique ^^

Beautiful knife. But is that handle just glued on? None of those decorative pins go through the tang not are the buttcap pins structural. Will that handle hold up long term. Absolutely beautiful though.
Thank you very much 🙏 the handle is glued with epoxy glue then the silk goes through the 2 pieces of wood cast in epoxy as well. The nails are just there for decoration. This handle will never move 😉👍
Why does no one have a stripper for their chisel tool? Why make a chisel that does not perform and deforms on its first use? I suggest you use some H13 for your next tool and follow the tech sheets for heat treating as it is very, very, very specific. Use a steel designed for hot work, you will respect yourself in the morning. Also adding a piece of stock to the middle after you split it would make the hollow shaft of the feather and give it a bit more realistic look.

Looks great but the tang/tail is a bit worrysome. Its only held in by glue and generally thats not a good idea, usually having a big tang with holes in it for pins is very secure and easy to repair. The other being a longer tang where you can heat the tip (metal "pommel" to avoid burning) and make it flat with this hook effect to hold it in place.
Thank you 🙏🙏🙂 epoxy glue has proven itself... the greatest cutlers use this technique. if it is well maintained there is no reason to change the handle and really in the worst case we sand it and glue a new handle.
