    Quick added note. since Joel made this video there was a slight addition to the Tomato cage. There are now two additional stainless steel rods and six plastic tubes. The rods go through holes in the cover and the nutrient bowl and hod the top and the bowl together. They are as tall as the cage itself.. The cage hoops fit over the metal rods and the metalrods get covered with the plastic tubes (there are still the plastic support rods.). Since I did not get the four little pieces that attach the cage to the top I suspect this is a way to add stability to the cage and frankly to the whole structure. It is easy to figure out, but I had to read the instructions instead of just relying on Joels excellent video.
    Again, Thanks Joel for this video.

      Thank you for that addendum Weber much appreciated!
      I've not seen this new alteration/addition but it sounds like a well needed improvement that should have been thought of from the start :-D
      Like the indoor grow lights, I created my own setup before Tower Garden released their own. Again thanks for your awesome input!
      Much respects brother.

      Joel Simoes it seems like a good idea. It is interesting that it actually ties the top to the basin. Should make it more stable in the wind.

    U can't go up or down to far then re-adjust in opposite direction.....ur ppm's will be through the roof, also if ur gonna show how to adjust ph in a recirculating system show with plants active in system like u had pre-edit cause inexperienced users may fry there crop when roots are present with the method demonstrated here. Other wise well explained, labels were out for sponsor and clear instructions on experienced pits in road.....nicely done

    • @CardinalGardener
      @CardinalGardener  6 років тому

      Thank you Nik. Yeah I could foresee that possible danger. I was a lot less experienced a few years back, although at the same time once ya know the water you're working with and routine quantities used, then there's virtually little to no guess work left and it's easy to get a balance on the first go, that's the case for me now, and others will find that curve too I trust. I've never found plant growth to really suffer during my seasons of growing from either too low or too high a PPM, but that's just my observation. I never really know what the breakdown of the PPM is anyway since different plants are going to uptake different nutrients quantities, so in the end I have a level of trust that the entirety of the system finds its synergy as long as I do my part providing the essentials. Hopefully no one's suffered a major crop hazard in their home-level growing ventures :-D To this day during all of my experimenting I've never had something completely fizzle on me due to one single variable. Really does evoke in me a respect for the adaptability and resilience of plants!

    you did great job by showing this video, but also I understood every thing about new generation planning, farming are just another level of business, it is not about organic it is all about money....

    • @CardinalGardener
      @CardinalGardener  4 роки тому

      I guess that depends on whom you're talking to. If you talk to a farming business, depending on whom it is, sure they may just be pushing business, but I've seen plenty of good-natured people who are trying to grow food with a bigger picture mentality and consider/implement regenerative growing systems. I don't do any farming business but I live in a suburban environment with limited space, so, I do the best with what I have and a hydroponics set up like this (which I only use indoors now, actually) just facilitates how much I can grow for me and my family. Especially handy since 6 months out of the year I can't do anything outside. It's only November 11th and already today we are getting 20cm of snow and this week we are getting temperatures as low as -20 C. That's pretty insane. So, one's just gotta do the best you can and always strive to improve where possible.
      I think my mindset just keeps my focus on what to do right, and I see more of that, than attracting instances of seeing what's being done wrong with food (which I used to do all the time when I was trying to Fight wrong systems).

    Wow Joel, you are excellent at doing instructional videos! As I was watching this, I thought maybe you worked for the company and you had put many of these together before... I am interested in purchasing one of these and am wondering how you like yours? I live in Idaho and wanted something for indoors in the winter... What are your thoughts on this? I only eat organic foods and I am concerned with the fertilizers that they use for this as well? What are your thoughts on this?

    • @CardinalGardener
      @CardinalGardener  10 років тому +1

      Hey Dessa, thanks for the props :)
      If you're willing to set aside $50-$70 a month (unless you wanna pay for the whole thing upfront) I definitely would recommend this unit. I just finished a video a few weeks ago on indoor growing, check it out it's on my Tower Garden playlist. One of the huge advantages of growing your own food --- year round is a bonus! I wouldn't be able to do that in Canada's cold climate otherwise :-( --- is that you can ensure your vegetables are adequately fed a full spectrum of minerals, for their health (and yours!). And of course, no pesticides. ANY decrease in toxic load onto our bodies is worth its weight in gold these days! I'm happy to hear you supporting Organic growing practices over conventional. Hopefully one day what we now call conventional won't even exist as a label. If you have any Q's after watching my indoor growing video feel free to drop a reply. Good luck with your endeavour! :-)

    Yes someone made a kit.... where can I order ?How much does it cost? Is there any discount for schools?

    • @CardinalGardener
      @CardinalGardener  9 років тому

      Kay John Hey there. If you live in Canada you order online from the web site of a Canadian rep, here is the link to mine:
      rejuvenate.towergarden.ca/
      If you live in the United States then you order from a Rep in your southern part of the world :-)
      As for discounted orders, there is none that I am aware of. They have a ''Family Garden'' package that includes 3 towers plus 1 tomato cage and some nick-knacks that might save you a few bucks based on your needs, and you can make monthly interest-free payments or pay all upfront.
      I know it is a bit of an investment, in my view, I see it as an investment in my independence, quality food and ease of use (if you can make growing your own veggies easy you're more likely to actually do it!).
      I once met a group of guys here in Toronto that were taking the Tower Gardens to the school system for teaching the youngens about this stuff, I think that is an AMAZING endeavour; hope you can pull off something like that!
      Good luck!

    Buy veggies at the local farmer, lot cheaper than this expensive system.

    • @CardinalGardener
      @CardinalGardener  3 роки тому

      You're right, after 12 months though no more $53 per month :-P. Actually it's running this thing indoors, using grow lights that rack up a bill via electricity lol. But as a hobby and being able to harvest daily greens without needing to wash them, and having something so super fresh, totally worth it for me.
      This ready-to-go "expensive" system won't be for everyone.
      Let it be for whom it is for :-)

      haha, yes it does cost $600 in Canada, EVERYTHING is more expensive in Canada than any other place I swear, but more to your point, this is an amazing set up already built for a person and it's biggest appeal will be to someone who doesn't want to construct something from scratch. Plus it's UV-protected plastic. This thing is gonna endure my entire lifetime!

    Hi Joel. I know why you have acidic water. I believe you have soft water. Soft water is low in Gh and Kh. Gh = General Hardness, Kh = Carbonate hardness. Yes the cause is the RO water. RO water removes all mineral in the water making the water soft.
    Therefore adding any addictives, change the PH greatly. It is called PH swing. Thus I do recommend you maintain stable PH around 7 to 6. It is good for plants in this range.
    BTW, good vids on tower garden. Truly appreciated it. Thanks.

    • @CardinalGardener
      @CardinalGardener  8 років тому

      Thanks Nick! Yeah in truth I only went to the efforts of using purified water that one time, now I just use tap water from the hose outside and I let it stand open for 2 days for the chlorine to dissipate, it is just a lot lot more economical. I don't use RO water for anything anymore, its quite acidic, I got an over the counter water distiller that works GREAT, use it once a day for my water needs, and it leaves water at ZERO ppm, even better than R/O which leaves traces as high as 20ppm that I've seen. I was always curious why such low PPM would leave the water SO acidic in RO, but maybe its not about the chemicals but the structure of the water, who knows. It is a most mysterious substance :-)

  • @epheas

    i plant a lot of things, but this thing is useless for the most of us. Unable to purchase, or too expensive. First try to do one with simple tools so we can make it (pvc pipe etc). Second, no electricity involved. Cost is everything. Do a sistem on top that suply the water for days. Remember go back to the basics, plants dont need a penny to grow.

    • @CardinalGardener
      @CardinalGardener  2 роки тому

      Systems like this clearly have a target demographic. I think you're right though I would also encourage anyone to experiment and build their own growing systems! There's so many creative possibilities!

    I don't know if Tower Garden reads these posts but there is a real need to develop and sell a mini greenhouse to work in conjunction with the Tower Gardens to extend the useable time frame of the tower gardens for hobby growers. This would be a good add on for increasing revenue for Tower Garden while enhancing the product for its users. A competitor, "the Garden Tower" is getting ready to launch a mini-greenhouse for their competing product this Spring apparently from what I have heard.

    • @CardinalGardener
      @CardinalGardener  7 років тому

      That would be a cool done-it-for-you strategy. But at the time of this posting such a thing does not exist from them. Fortunately garden centres/home hardware stores or even online, do sell mini style greenhouses that could be used to this effect, for anyone who really wanted to go that route instead of moving the Tower Garden indoors for the cold season.

  • @atomizer2665
    @atomizer2665 7 років тому +2

    If you use reverse osmosis, distilled or rainwater you can expect the PH to be too low. Instead of adding PH up (potassium hydroxide) simply mix your RO, distilled or rainwater with some tapwater (finding the ideal ratio make take a little trial and error).
    The mixed water will not only give you the correct PH but will add buffering (less PH swings) along with some calcium and magnesium. The nutrient is formulated to take account of Calcium and Magnesium in the tapwater which isnt present in RO, distilled or rainwater so you can expect deficiencies unless you supplement with Calmag.
    Imho, the tower tonic is quite a weak nutrient so it doesnt offer very good value for money.

    • @CardinalGardener
      @CardinalGardener  7 років тому +1

      Very awesome notes thank you Atom.
      The Tower Tonic does seem rated as a pretty low concentration solution, however despite that it is what I use and have to say it doesn't seem to let me down in terms of yields UNLESS I'm doing a fair bit of more demanding fruit bearing veggies.
      And good idea on mixing tap with RO water.
      For me for outside I've just adapted/opted fully for tap water and letting it sit a few days to dechlorinate.
      However, for my indoor growing this Winter, for the first time I am using my own distilled water ONLY and have to say, WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! There is no residue/mineral build up on anything because all those excess minerals from tap water (calcium and all the bad stuff too, fluoride much.... ugh), are simply not present! My deeming is the plants become limited in their ability to uptake minerals/nutrients anyway in the absence of REAL sunlight so then there would always be more excess mineral deposits around all base holes. Not with Distilled water and very low nutrients added, I got my Herbs and Greens thriving, and loving it!
      Thank you for your feedback brother!
      Kindest regards

    • @atomizer2665
      @atomizer2665 7 років тому +1

      no worries, it`ll be fine for leafy greens, herbs etc. For things like toms you`ll get a better yield using a more crop specific nute. I use aeroponics indoors/outdoors with homemade nutrients. My tapwater is very hard so i use RO water exclusively, which not only offers complete control over the nutrient makeup but also saves a fortune in PH down :)

    • @CardinalGardener
      @CardinalGardener  7 років тому +1

      Unfortunately I'd have the reverse issue if I was to buy RO water at the Water Store that would cost me a fortune as I don't have an RO unit haha.

    Also the roots are swimming at the in the reserve. I'm concerned that it will get caught in me pump.. any thoughts?

    • @CardinalGardener
      @CardinalGardener  7 років тому +4

      A white patterning developing on the leaves of zucchini plants in particular (not sure what kinda squash you are growing) is normal. The bottom of the tower is the appropriate positioning for something like zucchini. Now, if your "spotting" is actually powdery mildew than that is fungal disease and you should prune off at the base all infected leaves to prevent further spread. It will develop if the leaves stay wet for prolonged periods, especially overnight with no sun to evaporate the water, so see if there's excess spilling or dripping onto them from somewhere above.
      As for the roots dangling within the reservoir space, from above, just reach in there with your hand and pull em out, no harm will come to the plant and it'll keep from getting into the pump. Just pull them out in a way that they don't break up leaving small pieces floating in your water to get into the pump. Easy to do with a good grip right at the holes where the roots are protruding from.
      Hope that helps!

    How do you plant the seed in your system, as well as planting seed directly in your system. I think it is important to show how much root should be in the system and what medium you would use to cover the plant in the system?

    • @CardinalGardener
      @CardinalGardener  4 роки тому +1

      Hey Mate
      I have another video on my playlist for germinating the seeds into the rockwool cubes before they go into the Tower. It's not really a good idea to start them in the Tower because conditions may not be favourable for seedlings, unless you live in a year round warm climate with lots of sun and you're doing this outside. So, starting them independently to get some matured seedlings then transplanting them into the Tower is usually the way to go.
      It doesn't matter about the roots, they'll be supported by the base of each module and you only need to pull them out with your hand on the very bottom module so that they don't grow so long that they might get sucked into the pump, and that's easy to do. I've never had problems with roots growing for a full growing season, they never blocked the flow of water. And there is nothing to cover the plants. They grow solely in the rockwool cubes and no covering of anything is needed. I don't even use vermiculite anymore on the cubes, I found it to be pointless.
      The key is to start those seeds with a light so they develop strong!

      Hey Alexander
      the clear tube is an optional accessory should you want to drain the water of your reservoir at some point, without taking it all apart; you'd feet it into the pump and let it drain into, wherever you'd like that reservoir water to go.
      I've never needed to use it personally, so I don't even know where my clear tube went lol.

      Hey Rebecca :-D
      No not all bad. This was in my beginner days of gardening I was a little extra precautionary about everything lol. With the pH adjusters those WILL burn your skin so just be very careful when handling them unprotected, but the nutrient solutions won't hurt if they spill on you. Now I don't even hesitate to just put my arm in the reservoir and stir it around after I add nutrients :-)
      Also, what and how our skin absorbs anything can't even be compared to how plants uptake nutrients, we're talking two completely different biological processes.

      Sorry mate I really have no experience with using Sodium Bicarbonate in this way. In theory it seems plausible, but 2 problems I would see, 1st is that who knows if/how this may affect absorption of nutrients in the solution, 2nd because it is a powdery substance it would sludge up in the water and cause problems for the pump.

    • @CardinalGardener
      @CardinalGardener  7 років тому +2

      Hey Winston. No the default system doesn't use any additional airation inside the reservoir. It seems the setup functions just fine without it, while operating it outdoors.
      However, having now used the Tower Indoors for 3 years, this year i decided to use an AirStone inside the reservoir to experiment with, and, by virtue of that alone, or the fact that I am using distilled water this year and not de-chlorinated tap water, the Reservoir water has been staying very clean and near odourless.
      So for Indoor growing I am now indeed going to keep using airation inside the reservoir to keep things fresh. But outside I'm not going to bother because it's one additional thing to power that has just not been necessary at all in the few years I been using the Tower!

    • @CardinalGardener
      @CardinalGardener  3 роки тому

      Hey Katherine
      What you need to do is every few days just put your arm into the watering hole that is usually covered and grab all the hanging roots, pull them out, this won't harm your plants, and it will keep roots from getting tangled into the water pump.
      I only clean the water pump at the end of the season I never have need to do it more than once, so long as you're careful not to let debris fall inside the reservoir, it should be fine! If something did happen to make your pump stop working then I guess you would need to pull it out and dislodge anything that might be trapped in there, rinse it out. I like to use a toothbrush to give a good scrubbing on hard to reach crannies of the tower, and remove residues, like on the cover of the pump. Nothing to be worried about :-) you got this

      The purpose of a Tower Garden (or any other Hydroponic system) as far as I'm concerned, is to make it easier for people to grow some of their own food without the use of chemical sprays used ON plants to deter pests and diseases. The Tower Garden succeeds well at doing this with only basic upkeep! As far as I have researched over these years, purely organic fertilizers (like bat guano, wormcasting tea, manure products, etc.) would have smelly and inconsistent and/or unpredictable results in a small environment we are trying to maintain under control, like a small water Reservoir.

So I use it in my indoor grow room during the cold season. • @CardinalGardener
      @CardinalGardener  4 роки тому +1

      Hey there Fero :-)
      I do still use the TG, and I enjoy it, but differently than how I started out using it.
      See as I grew more into gardening over the years my passion developed for developing what landscape there is to work with in our home, and that meant more in ground gardening and developing of growing structures/spaces and lots of experimentation. Because of that, I opted not to further divide my scarce time into also tending to the TG outside during the active warm months, which are not entirely plentiful in my climate compared to more southern zones.
      So, I keep the TG inside in my grow room, where I grow in it during the winter'ish times, for just various types of greens and herbs, nothing fruiting. I initially invested into T5 CF lights for growing, and while they may be dated technology now I suppose in lieu of all the fancy LED options, it is what I got to work with and I make it work. It is nice to not buy any greens in the winter and just harvest daily from the TG, usually just for me and my mom.
      So, I would recommend the TG for anyone who has limited space to work with, or limited warm weather in your climate, or you just want to explore a different way of growing. It's not Entirely that it's less work than growing in soil, it's just different work, and maybe simpler for most people to pick up. So I do recommend a product like this for supplementary food growing to rely less on grocery-bought food :-)
      I hope that perspective is helpful to you!
      good luck!

    First off Very Good Video Joel, so my question when you have to add water like lets say a gallon. do you add A & B to the gallon or just add water and test your ph level ?

    • @CardinalGardener
      @CardinalGardener  3 роки тому

      Hey Paul, thanks, so you'll only want to add water when the reservoir is emptied enough that warrants the effort of topping it up completely, and minimize the amount of times you need to play with adjusting the water pH and nutes.
      Here's a trick, use a consistent water source (ex: tap water), add the nutrients amount relative to how much water you're adding, then test it's pH to know what it's baseline pH is at, then add pH - or + as needed to bring it to 6.5, and make a mental note of how many drops/ml of pH adjuster you needed to add to bring it to 6.5. This way, in the future you don't need to test it every time once you have your routine down!
      You may not need to add nutrients with every water refill though, such as when plants are still young or if they are extremely thirsty plants, they may simply be drinking more water than they are eating nutrients. The best way to know this though, is with a PPM reader to measure the total dissolved solids in the reservoir when you fill it up, and testing it again just before you refill it and note how drastic the difference is. That's how I decide when to add nutrients instead of just water, by trying to keep a consistent PPM count.
      Hope that helps!

      The nutrients are added into the water reservoir. These days both powdered form nutrients are available and the more traditional liquid suspended nutrients are available. When the pump shoots the water with the nutrients up the tower it trickles down over the plant roots on the inside, and they absorb the nutrients in this way. And they grow quite well :-)

      joelsaxis is it organic the nutrition that’s feed the plants and is it expensive ?

    • @CardinalGardener
      @CardinalGardener  4 роки тому

      @@ericseaverns3873 by definition nutrients are inorganic, they are elemental. An organic nutrient or fertilizer is a byproduct of something, like chicken poop, bat guano, home made compost, leaf mold, etc. etc. etc.
      So when growing hydroponically it doesn't matter if you are using just elements suspended in solution--it's actually probably easiest to maintain a system when you can control exactly what and how much is being added to the water reservoir, or you could experiment with various organic nutrients and see how it works. Local hydroponics store around my area have both options. The Tower Garden suppliers have a basic nutrient solution lineup that works pretty good for almost veggies, and it's not that expensive (but shipping costs suck). You can use whatever growing nutrients you want by visiting a local hydroponics store and seeing what options they have available for you.
      BTW the Tower Garden is only available in America and Canada last I checked. But what I'm saying here about nutrients will apply to Any hydroponics growing system.

    Do you need to let well water sit for a couple of days like you do tap water before putting it in the tower garden?

    • @CardinalGardener
      @CardinalGardener  5 років тому

      Hey Tamara, no you do not because well water does not have chlorine in it the way city Tap water does. The point of letting water sit for 24+ hours is to let the Chlorine evaporate. However do pay attention to how your plants respond to well water. Every well will be different but I know people who have wells and all have something undesirable about it, such as too many of any particular minerals (hard water) or whatever, so the PPM in your water might be really high after you add nutrients too; not sure how this will affect the plants uptake of nutrients so like I said, just keep a close eye on it and see how they do.

    I just got an outdoor tower garden and am wondering if it's better to set it up on my deck ( full exposure to sun & rain ) or in my screened in, roofed patio ( not as much sun, no exposure to rain ) ? I live in Tampa, Florida - so the next few months will be pretty mild with maybe a night or two where it gets close to freezing temps. Any advice or pointers to vids on this topic would be a great help. Thanks !

    • @CardinalGardener
      @CardinalGardener  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Bob, well ultimately the ideal location can best be determined by what you want to grow primarily. As I've told many folks, if you're doing mostly leafy greens and herbs, you can get away with a lot less light, but when you get into fruiting crops then you really can't get away very well with minimal lighting conditions, so let that be your prime determining factor for location to set it up.
      When growing in the Tower, exposure to rain isn't any more of an issue versus if you were growing the same crops in garden beds/soil. What does matter, is if you're growing crops that do not like dampness or prolonged wet conditions (cucumbers and many squashes being a prime example).
      To my loss I'm sure :-P I've never visited Tampa Florida, but from your description it sounds like you could grow outside all through this season! Herbs and greens, most will endure even a few nights here and there of frosty conditions, and then bounce back as temps warm and the sun shines. Personally, having the opportunity I would always choose a location that gets more sun than less, with some shade if possible in the afternoon to avoid heat stress on plants. But because this is the winter season that is hardly relevant, you can choose an all sunny spot now, and try a different spot in the summer time!
      Hope that helps.

      Aah so exciting! Glad you're set up to go. Right now it's Winter and it's so cool to be able to be growing living foods in my house! You'll love it when you breed new life and have the freshest food at arm's length. Good luck to your growing!
