Macro photography is quite challenging in real life because of the limitations it brings due to both the environment and the gear you are shooting with. Well, that's during the day where the light is plentiful. So, wouldn't it make absolutely no sense to try and even consider performing macro photography at night? Call me crazy if you want, that's what I have been trying for a few years and perfecting during the 2-week clear sky streak we've had over Arctic Norway.
You might have already seen some of the astro-macro sequences I published in the past ( • HEART OF THE ARCTIC WI... ). This year, I wanted to go even smaller than 3 years ago by using the Canon 100mm f2.8 macro, which had been collecting dust on my shelf for years. It's a very sharp lens wide open and offers a minimum aperture of 2.8, which, if you don't make focusing errors, is extremely beneficial as opposed to f/4. However, even though the frost formations were big and ubiquitous, there were a series of hurdles I'd have to combat this year: 1) 15% moon and less (no moon), 2) aurora being too dim or not in the frame 3) crystals depositing on the gear and in the motion control gear giving choppy sequences...
However, after 13 days of trial and error, I am extremely happy and proud to release this short film, which is a testament to how beautiful and fragile these ephemeral frost periods are in Arctic Norway. During this story, I go from a wide-angle canvas and I progressively zoom in on the details of the landscape as the film develops. At the end, you will see never-before seen sequences of extreme-macro featuring the petals of hoar frost flowers reflecting and refracting the northern lights. No artificial lighting was used for these sequences, only the light of the sky and the aurora. You will see some out of focus stars zoom through the background! I have been absolutely blown away by the results, which anyone would have thought impossible until someone crazy tried. My only regret is that you cannot see the crystals grow during the several hours of sequence (that gives me something to work on for next time).
I hope you love the story arc and the novel way it is presented here, and I hope you can appreciate how much I have physically suffered through long hours of waiting, hunger, thirst and sleep-deprivation to get this footage.

OMG, just today morning I was seeing a video of frost flowers and was mesmerized, and now I see your beautiful work of art. It's simply magical and to those who think magic doesn't exist, you just have to look at nature!
By the way, living in a tropical climate, I've never experienced snow, and I can see the incredible beauty of cold winters. It has a "Frozen", fairytale feel to it.

J'en ai fais aussi au 14mm f1.8 qui sont visibles ici, mais le champ est tres étendu et le rendu est bien different. Pour le reste, je voulais vraiment isoler les sujets et le ciel :)
