A fully articulating screen doesnt allow for a horizontal straight-on tilted angle (if that makes sense). With the fully articulating screen design, if you want to hold the camera high or low shooting horizontal and tilt the screen, it will nearly always (unless you're shooting sideways) be off-centre to your eye, and hard (or impossible to see). This is why Nikon implemented the flip design we see on the z8 and z9. So in my humble opinion, your criticism of the screen is not valid as its design caters less towards the vlogger who wants to see himself, and more towards those who are typically behind the lens, and not in front of it. Otherwise this was an excellent video, thank you

I absolutely love my Nikon Z8. I can't fault it in any way. It's everything I wanted in a FF Mirrorless Camera. If anyone is like me, I wanted a do everything brilliantly camera. Which means I'm able to do any kind of photography confident in the knowledge the camera will perform. Prior camera's in the line up (except the z9) I always saw caveats if your wanting the ultimate allrounder in a normal form factor. I love the screen vs my previous Canon R5. I hated the screen on my R5, cheap feeling and got in the way of my L bracket and it coming out to the side of the camera for photography doesn't feel natural.

Push right on the directional pad to customize any of the display options. You'll see "Center-weighted area" at the bottom of each list, you can un-check to remove. Totally customizable. 😎👍🏻

I keep my 24-120 on my Z8 and my longer glass on my Z9. I am amazed about the low light capabilities of the Z8 & Z9. I was shooting landscapes at 1 am and the autofocus works. This is a big change from my D850 and D810A. Focusing was a chore and usually took about 2 to 5 minutes. I use all 4 for low light and Aurora Photography. I cannot wait to try them out in the cold (-35 C).

I purchased a Z8 a month ago. I'm not a professional, more of a serious amateur that shoots a lot of high school sports and events. Up until now I had been using a D7500. I had been wanting to make the jump to mirrorless for a while but I wanted a no blackout EVF but didn't want to pay the price of a Z9. When the Z8 came out and its basically the same camera as the Z9 with a few minor (to me) things missing and significantly less expensive (albeit still pricey in its own right) I went for it.
Best decision ever! Once I figured out what works best for me with the autofocus setup, I rarely miss a shot. This is an amazing camera.

I absolutely love the Z8. Haven't used my Z6II a day since getting it. Besides my normal shooting, I shot a drag race and it locked on to the cars flawlessly going past at 150mph using the 24-200mm lens. Sharp coming, as they passed and from behind. The car autofocus worked great. Used the 50mm F1.8 as the sun started to set. I posted the images on their FB group and the racers went nuts. I have new business potential now.

Probably someone else has mentioned this, but the icon or image you called Autofocus Animal, is really Autofocus Auto; where the camera's logic considers whether to choose a human, cat, dog, bird, airplane, vehicle, etc. I believe it prioritizes humans. To get it to select things quicker and more to your priority, you then choose, humans OR animals OR birds OR vehicles, etc. I think when you're using it for weddings, you would probably be okay with Autofocus Auto, but if the camera's getting confused, then Autofocus People might be better (I don't shoot any weddings.) I shoot mostly dog shows, so it's important that I use Autofocus Animal eye detect (the icon is a dog that looks like a cat) and not Autofocus Auto. The final question you asked was how did you like the switch? A year ago I was shooting at dog shows with both the D850 and Z7ii. Now I use the Z9 and Z8 and I couldn't be happier. And yes, they are like computers, but I remember having the same thought when I studied Darrell Young's "Mastering the Nikon D850". I really liked the Z7ii and D850, but have no interest in switching back to them.

I experienced the comfort of being able to use 1.4 outside in the sun when I rented the Z8. But of course, you can do the same with any camera - even ones that top out at 1/4000s: just put a good ND filter on it - not a variable one, those have optical problems. I do that with my Z6II & 105 F1.4 during the shoot outside. The Z6II is still the best sensor for low light - noise wise. But it indeed lacks the AF bite & sensitiveness of the Z8/Z9 - which was great on dancefloors at weddings. I do wish I could see into the future to know how the Z6III would perform, because I love the size of the Z6II.

@@russandloz Take away the Z8's sensor and replace it with the Z7ii's. Take away the USB PD port, round eye cup, 10-pin remote connections, and the unnecessarily cumbersome articulating display. Basically, transfer the Z7ii's internals into a Z8 body - reducing the price - and take away a couple of features as noted above... and keep the sensor curtain. That would be the perfect landscape camera (IMO).

Leica Q2 is a computer too. You must mean a Leica M with a real rangefinder. The new ZF is nice but it’s missing a couple features that would put it on the next level- one is an ergonomic faux advance lever/ thumb rest/ on off switch and 2. A 36 Mpx sensor vs the 24 MPx it currently has. Those two additions would make the ZF the ultimate retro-style camera that might even make it hold its value like the film FM3A.

Nikon great cameras are expensive for me, but maybe the Z8 / Z9 tech will trickling down to more affordable bodies. In Fuji you have good cheap used bodies like XH1 and great new cameras like XH2 / XH2S. Lenses are similar priced when you take in the account the third party ones (Viltrox, Yongnuo, Meike, TTartisan, Sigma, Tamron, etc) and both brands can use EF and F lenses with adapters. The only big difference are the top notch telephoto lenses (that I wouldn't use) and the FF / APSC difference.

Ironically I waited until the Z8 was released before committing to purchasing a Z9 instead. I'm a long time D850 shooter so you'd think the Z8 would be my preference however my D850 like all my cameras had the additional grip allowing me the 9fps and the seemingly infinate battery life with the ENEL18. When I saw the size and additional cost of adding the Z8 battery grip ( and the fact that it would not accept ENEL18's ) it was clear to me that just spending the extra on the Z9 was the best choice for me. I now shoot my Z9 alongside my Z6II and am getting great results 😊 Shot two weddings totally silent on the Z9, that in itself is a game changer particularly during the ceremony. Sure, you can shoot silent with most mirrorless cameras but with the Z9 I have no concerns about banding or rolling shutter.

You either use the flip function when in horisontal mode or you use the tilt function when in vertical camera mode. Don't use both at the same time. The hinge is purposeful designed to accommodate both functions. It is not built to be torn out from the camera and used as a camera strap, even though a lot of youtubers think that is how you showcase it.

I can't speak to weddings, but I've had a Z8 for nearly four weeks now and have shot all-day sporting events every weekend since getting it. As the event photographer, I've been shooting every athlete, not just one or two I care about. That makes it a pretty intense workout for both me and the camera. With the camera in airplane mode, the viewfinder set to 120hz, and the rear screen turned off, I get about the same battery life I've come to expect from my old D850. The rear screen is a huge power drain with the default setting to automatically switch. It's no surprise that the battery life in that default mode is closer to using the D850 in live mode.
If you're using continuous autofocus and keep the back button pushed down for extended periods of time, that can also drain the battery quicker and heat up the camera. Sitting in the center of four wrestling rings and trying to cover all four matches at once, I got about two hours of battery life with the EN-EL15c, which was more photos than I would have gotten with the D850 but approximately the same amount of bursts and time (I've shot this event for 12 years, so I've got a pretty good idea of how DSLRs perform in the same environment). Shooting basketball, volleyball, track and a 5k run, I got approximately 3 hours per battery. I've always kept three batteries in my bag anyway, so it wasn't a problem. I was exhausted long before my backup batteries were.
Being able to charge in the camera with USB-C though is a big improvement. I plugged the camera in to my phone charger while driving between events across town, or I could have used an external power bank (if I owned one).
Having said all that, I really hope Nikon is working on an EN-EL15d.
My only real issue with the Z8 so far has been the lack of heat dissipation. I've gotten hot card warnings twice, and it feels like the processor also gets hot when using autofocus for long periods of time. However, I've never reached the shutdown threshold. Part of me kind of wishes I'd gone for a Z9 after all since heat dissipation isn't an issue with those. A Z9 would also be a better option if you're going to have the camera set up at a finish line with a laser trigger (or its own internal auto capture) since you wouldn't need to worry about the battery. Of course, you could easily use an external power bank to keep the camera going in that scenario, so there are ways to get around the battery life difference ... they just require more purchases and planning.

Nice vid -- but your comments re the articulation of the rear LCD are stupid. Unless you use it as designed you will not enjoy the difference -- shoot low (on the ground or waste level) in landscape or portrait with the rear screen tilted out fully OR shoot high (at arms length) same tilt the screen out fully and then try to align a shot with the Z8 screen and a camera with a fully articulating screen - try it with a large telephoto or a short wider angle -- and you will very quickly see Nikon's wisdom.
Vloggers and selfie shooters can bog-off use cheaper gear that is better suited to their needs (Nikon makes this as well) - a pro-level camera is designed for pro-level shooters with pro-level skills and willingness to learn - if you are not in this group then do not buy the Z8 or Z9. These are not cameras for you. But it is your money and you pick - however, here is the deal should you buy one then do not just whine like a 2 year old if the camera needs you to actually learn to use it, actually read/study what is in the manual and even go on a workshop to understand how best to set it up and use it.
I own 2 Z8 and 2 Z9 plus several other cameras. Use them almost daily -- and in the case of the Z9 have done so since Jan 2022.
