I am a hobbyist or maybe amateur, I don't compete or earn money from my photography - I just enjoy it. I enjoy watching your videos and learning from them. I started with a Costco d3000 kit and progressed through d7000, d7100, d500 to my current z6 and z50. I've been replacing lenses to the Z for a while now, but haven't sold my d500 or f-mount glass. It's good that I'm single, lol. Anyway, I've agonized about whether I should buy a z7ii or hold off to the z8. Luckily, I've held off. This video not only clarifies my next purchase (z8), but I have continued to shoot back-button, single point, continuous focus. I've never been interested in 'playing' with those eye detect or other new autofocus options. Your explanation has convinced me that I need to learn them. Time for a trip to the zoo to practice!! :) Thank you, Hudson, for all your instructional videos!

I’m a nature photographer and have owned a D850 since 2017. The D850 has gave me some award winning photos over the years and still do. I have never shot video on any camera, nor have I ever shot a mirrorless camera.
I’m interested in the Z8 because Nikon and the Ambassadors have stated the Z8 is the true camera that replaces the D850. I’m just looking for an honest answer not one from Nikon or its Ambassadors. Can the Z8 shoot single images better than the D850?

Great update, Hudson. Many thanks for that. I forklifted over to the mirrorless side from a D5 / D850 combo. Had I known that a Z8 with these specs was coming, I probably would have waited. However, I do need a backup body (I have always had at least one backup camera and I cannot believe how "naked" it has felt without one, and dreading if my Z9 would somehow die while on a client shoot) , so I suspect that a Z8 will be a great backup body for me. As you say, everything is pretty much the same except in a smaller body.

If in the budget, then it's the perfect expense. I've been travelling a lot with just the Leica Q2 and the Z9 and I know how you feel. If I were on a client gig, I'd be more nervous. It's bombproof, but you never know.

I was really hoping for that as well, but I think Nikon is starting to learn a lesson that before they make any release (even in the Z8 case) I think they are focused on having inventory available. I'm curious to see how the Z8 ships because I think it's going to be a lot easier to get your hands on one than the Z9 was. I also think this is the case for 200-600, it's probably ready to go, but right now I'm guessing they are building up inventory because it's going to sell like hot cakes....at least I hope thats the case!

The Z8 looks great but as more of a stills landscape shooter I’ll probably go with the z7 series when I decide to move on from my D810. For both the smaller size and cost. One has to decide if you can live without (2) CFE-B cards, Built in grip, better weather proofing, extra function button , microphone, GPS, Faster buffer etc. with the Z9. I only have (1) mirrorless ( The Z9) so I look at the Z8 as a more affordable 2nd camera/backup camera but if Z9 AF flowed down to a future Z6/Z7III that would probably work for me but do I want to wait for that, probably not.

Z9/Z6 owner here. A lot of my Z9 use is with telephotos. The Z6- my first Z- is now used for light weight kit and backup.. An expensive upgrade, but I have preordered the Z8 for consistent autofocus, ^MP, color consistency, less weight and as a very strong backup. Let's face it, after a Z9 it is a painful to revert to the Z6 autofocus system in some situations. The only downside i see is the lack of integrated GPS.

Given the trade in value of a Z9 is less than a Z8, the issue for me is whether to replace or supplement the Z6, which as you indicated is still very capable except for BIF/action. Another confounding factor is that the Z9 is so beefy my hobbyist need for a backup body is diminished.

If I didn't have so much invested in the Sony system especially in lenses, I would be jumping at this! IMHO, for anyone looking at making the switch from any DSLR to Mirrorless, since you will have to replace your lenses (or use adapters) this camera would be worth a serious look at.
FWIW, they are on pre-order here in Canada for $5400 (Canadian) for the body only with a $200 discount if you buy the body & the 24-120mm f/4 S Lens.

Great Video!, I'm already considering selling my Z7-II. I have the Z9 as well which in my opinion smokes the Z7-II, my biggest concern however is the card slots, the CFE Cards are far superior to the SD Card, which make me wonder if in the next Year or two, will there be a Z8-II with twin CFE Cards which for me would justify having the Z8 as a backup to my Z9. The Z7-II is a good Camera, but with the arrival of the Z9, it just seems to be outdated to some degree due to the Z9 Focus System, if the Z8 have the same features as the Z9, it will be hard not to add this camera to your gear

I already have a Z9 and there is no way I would ditch it for a Z8. Yes, the Z8 looks an incredible camera and, especially with the lower price, I can see it doing extremely well. I would consider selling my Z7ii to upgrade to a Z8 as my second body, however, for me, the Z8 is missing three things - 1) GPS. I really like to geo-tag my photos, especially when travelling, and the Z9 makes this so easy. With the Z8 you would need to use an external app. I have done this in the past with my Z6 & 7ii but it was not always reliable and I often got home to find the app had failed to record all the GPS info. 2) I really don't want to go back to a mix of cards / card slots. I record both stills and video and having the ability to use two high performance CFExpress cards is invaluable. 3) I really like the feel and ergonomics of the Z9 with the large battery capacity and portrait hand-grip. Yes, you can add a plug-in grip to the Z8 but it still doesn't offer the capacity of a single Z9 battery (I always carry a spare) and it makes the Z8 even bigger than the Z9!!! I am certain the Z8 will be an incredibly successful camera but, for me, the Z9 is definitely the one to stick with.

    Quick Question, please . .
    Z7 ii Image Quality :
Is the image quality of the Nikon Z7ii equal to the image quality of the Z8?
Or does The Z8 produce more lovely images than the Z7ii?
I understand there are more aspects to these fine cameras that define what they really are, but for this question, I would like to concentrate solely on Image Quality.
    Thank You Very Much.

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  Рік тому +1

The image quality is totally on the same level and the stacked sensor of the Z7ii gets just ever so slightly more dynamic range. From a landscape and still life shooter's perspective there's no major gain. The Z8/9 are all about capturing fast action and tracking all kinds of subjects with zero blackout at very high frame rates. I'm sure a Z7iii and Z6iii will come with much of that tracking ability, slower frame rates and likely more megapixels than the current versions. When is the question we all wonder...

Maybe I'm wrong, but that's a focal range Nikon has traditionally made lots of compromises on and I see it's not listing as a "S" lens on the roadmap which puts it a tier below the 100-400. I know some loved it, but I was never happy with the old 200-500. I shot it for a day and took it back. Handling and image quality weren't what I wanted.

Nikon's made both pro and prosumer video and still fans happy with the z8/9. It's a big lift for a small company to do huge design rework around new stacked sensors. They will... But again on their more boutique schedule, like they did with the Z9. They also need to update the Z50/fc/30 sensor. They've clearly decided to work top down which is thier method.
I remember people predicting a 24mp body for years while I worked with my D700 at 12mp and Canon ate into thier share. Then came the D800 with more megapixels and better dynamic range and noise performance to lure them back. This is not a new story.

Nice Vid -- I ordered mine to. SmallRig have launched their cage for the Z8. The Z8 has very minor differences to the Z9. Less buttons so Custom Controls will need to change - basically the Fn3 on the front of the Z9 has gone and now the Fn4 button on the Z9 is the Fn3 button on the Z8 - sure no microphone/mic button.
New HEIF format Airplane SD and 2 Functions -- I expect these will come to the Z9 soon (well except skin softening) AND we have seen them both before in the Z6ii/Z7ii and P950.
GPS data can be pulled automatically via Snapbridge (Automatically). Ricci and Steve both say the Z8 AF works the same as Z9 with big glass and f-mount glass.
I would like to understand what Aircraft SD does differently -- apparently it has better Military Aircraft recognition -- just China, Russia and North Korea or ???
Will a Z9ii have 2 USB_C ports etc...... we will have to wait for Paris 2024 to see.

However, Nikon should remove some limitations of the camera. That's why I've been hoping for something after the Z7II for a while. The Z9 was out of the question for me. I don't like the design of the Z9. It's too big and too heavy for me. That's where the Z8 comes in. It's like a fusion between the Z9 (features) and the Z7/Z6 (body). The new Z8 also means that my good old D90 is finally retiring. I've had that camera for a few years and it has served me well. However, it doesn't come close to the quality of the images from the Z cameras.

That's would take a huge amount of computing /processing horsepower and lots of storage space. When you edit in a raw processor (your editing software is building jpeg previews of the raw data as you edit) generally those files are not to fill pixel dimension unless you zoom to 100 percent or tell the software to build 1:1 previews. It takes too much precocessing and space. Remember raw data is all ones and zeros. It has to be interpreted. The fact that your camera can quickly produce a 1:1 jpeg preview from those ones and zeros at a high enough quality to check focus, but small enough not to clog your CF Express card is kind of unbelievable really.

Nice summary, Hudson. You didn't mention the lack of in body GPS for the Z8 in your comparison. If the Z8 and Z9 had been launched together, the Z8 would have been better for me. For now, I'm sticking with my Z7 and my Z9. I do really like that the learning curve for the Z9 basically applies 99.5% to the Z8. I hope they do update the 600 gram Z7 with an Expeed 7. I really, really wish the Z7 had the green confirmation on autofocus with AF-C like the Z8 and Z9 have. From your comments at the very end, Hudson, it sounds like the best way to utilize the bird eye AF detect is the “hybrid” 2-button method you recommend for the z9? No change there? That is one reason I held off on the Z9 (and lack of 200-600 lens), and why I was considering the Sony A1 with its single button for bird eye AF.

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  Рік тому +1

I don't think you understand the hybrid eye detect method. It's eye detect in each mode. With the hybrid option you begin with a wider AF tracking "area" instead of a point to detect a small, fast, erratic subject (say a big center box or a big box on the one side of the frame) much like group area on a D5/850/500, but then as your subject flys in and you aquire a lock in the box, you hit the function button to track it framewide (still with eye detect too) by converting the tracked subject to 3D. It just works amazingly accurately to quickly aquire a fast subject. It limits the cameras search to that one big box, but with a button press that tracking goes to framewide 3D. I find it easier than sony or canons tracking. A trick they don't have.
If you don't need hybrid or want to use it, 3d tracking alone looks for and locks subjects/torsos/heads/eyes frame wide. It's simply harder to nab smaller, erratic, moving subjects as they first enter the frame before thier eyes are detected with the much smaller 3D AF square, but once you do, you track framewide. If eyes or a head are obvious, they light up to track whether near the 3d point or not. 3D alone is the go to mode for larger, more predictable, frame-filling subjects. No need for hybrid in that case.
With the hybrid method you direct the camera to look for smaller subjects only in that wide area, but a button press switches you to 3d framewide tracking on the subject you picked up in wide area. Practice it a few times and you'll miss it on an A1. :) that's my positron having shot them both a ton. The Z8 is identical. It has that advanced hybrid capability that other brands do not.

I just ordered a Z8 to replace my D500. This means that for a while, I will be adapting my 500PF to the Z8. I will also be adding a TC. I have a couple questions:
    1. Have you ever tried using the Z mount TC with an adapted F mount lense, 500PF in my case?
    2. Would I get better performance/image quality if I trade the 500PF for the 400/4.5? 500PF plus TC14 vs 400/4.5 plus TC14 slightly cropped.

Hey TC you'll love that switch. I shot thousands of frames with the 500pf on the FTZ until I got the 100-400 and 800 PF. That 500 is still a lens I highly recommend for Z shooters. There are many of my workshop regulars still happily using it on the Z9.
The new 400 is unbelievably light, small and sharp. It's bokeh is a little nicer, but you lose 20% of your reach. I did enjoy testing it and I have descerning clients who adore it. It handles the Z 1.4TC as well or better than the 500 with the F 1.4TC. They're both great lenses though. I shoot the 100-400 with the 1.4 as well and it's just fine. The Z8 isn't cheap, but compared to the lighter (than Z9) Sony A1 and higher resolution and cheaper than the Canon R3, the price is competitive. The vertical grip looks poorly designed (longer and deeper than the body) from an esthetic standpoint. The Z8 vertical grip engages the Z8 body via the Z8 camera battery compartment - so you loose that compartment to get two, not three batteries to use. The vertical grip also makes the camera bigger than the Z9. The Z8 battery compartment is too small to every take the larger battery (i.e. Z9). It will be interesting to see how it sells and how many buy the vertical grip (also interested in your experience when you get it in hand). It makes economic sense for Nikon to recycle the sensor and other Z9 hardware to get the most out of the R/D. There are certainly people that were waiting for this. I don't see getting rid of my Z9 (although I'd like lighter weight). I want either a medium resolution better low light Z body or APSC version that can do a higher frame rate raw with better pixel count than the Z9 in crop. I'm interested in how the heat dissipation will be in 8K 60p recording with Z8. Last, but not least, getting rid of the dial on the top left makes some sense and I can see why they would place WB as a button instead of flash for some. I'll be curious to hear your thoughts once you have the camera in hand.

This is because there is no advantage of the z8 with the added grip because it will be in fact bigger and just as heavy as the z9 with less options. Also you will lose the performance of 2 CF-express cards in the backup mode. Also if your in a wet environment all day the z9 will handle that better. If your doing landscapes and hiking a lot the z8 will be better. Also with the z9 they will take $150 off the price, the z8? and the vertical grip will be another $375, so your only saving $1000
