I don't know if he was just playin' coy but I guess their bass player had a family emergency while they were rolling through Missoula, Mt in 2022, but he said he had to improvise the beginning of the show so he played about 5 or 6 songs on the banjo. It was my favorite part of the show, just Billy pickin' old sing-along tunes like groundhog and crawdad. No doubt he's one of the best bluegrass guitar players of all time, but he's low-key one of the best old time banjo pickers too.
@@cdub9735 Yeah man. Lots of people confuse Bluegrass with American musical tradition, when in reality it's a pretty new and narrowly defined genre. It borrows some tunes from the old time cannon, but old time music is something entirely different. It's focused on fiddle and banjo, both of which are played radically different than bluegrass tradition. Music is all opinion and taste, but in my opinion I can find appreciation for some bluegrass, but old time is and always has been the better sounding and historically significant genre.
