In September & October of 1971, I spent 5 weeks on the Island, including one wonderful week alone. I still have the book about the island '20 Years of Growing', & I stayed in Peg Sayers house. Thank You for taking me back.

The woman would throw stones at the bailiffs because the islanders would generally have little in the way of rent and so the the baliffs would often take the islands livestock or even newly made cloths as way of payment, this rent was due to the earl of Desmond. Thomas O'Crohan mentions in his books that the islanders would sometimes herd all the islands livestock to the far west of the island to hid them from the baliffs.

This is truly amazing. In 1999 I spent a night on the Blaskets in the hostel. This could be me and my experiences( we even share the name) the seals, the village, the pasta meal, I even met Sue and spoke about dying she used natural dyes to dye her wool, I worked in a synthetic computer run dye house in England. I had an amazing incident with some guys herding sheep on the island. My night on the island is probably the best night I spent in all of my walking around the west of Ireland. Thanks for this ,I've been transported back to a truly memorable time .

It is great to know the seals can travel from the British Isles and Ireland freely because of the common travel area agreement between the two islands.(Joking.) But what a cracking island. I love the sound of the wind coming inland from the sea. So so beautiful. Thankyou for sharing. It is a shame to hear the islands population disappearing.

I will definitely visit the Blasket Islands some day. I, unlike many others loved Peig Sayers book in school so much that I bought the translated version the first chance I got. I have read most of the Islanders books and was so delighted to see inside Tomás's house in your fantastic video. Well done Derek. Brilliant five star stuff.

Stunning! And fascinating history. I loved hearing about the craft guild that wool-spinning lady was part of. How fantastic ( and inspiring!) that such things exist. I've been daydreaming lately about trying to start some kind of craft collective, because I feel this sort of thing ( making things with our hands, etc) is important, especially as so many of the old ways are being lost or abandoned. It's really great to know that there are little pockets around here and there where people are enjoying a simpler life as well as keeping old crafts alive and well.
That full moon footage was magical, and so was the image of the Hare! That symbol of the Hare has been following me around, so I'm taking this as a lovely little "sign". And how great were those seals? Damnit, I could talk all day about how much I loved this video! Sending thanks and a "well done, you!" from Aus. Enjoy!

Hey Derek loving the adventure. Kerry looks so mystical and you are really capturing it's beauty. I was wondering how you cope with recovery after such tough days pounding the roads especially in the heat. Have you ever tried rubbing magnesium spray into your leg muscles after all the exertion. I find it very beneficial after exercise and really helps with fatigue. It also aids stiffness. Maybe someone to consider. Keep her lit 👍

Hi Nigel! Thanks a lot, I just make sure I eat well and stay hydrated. Many hikers stop drinking water after the actual walk but it’s important to keep drinking water. Otherwise I let the body build up resistance in the early days and do whatever feels comfortable - don’t feel any need to do more than that for my recovery but everyone is different 👍👍
