For context - iRacing Bathurst 12 hours, less than an hour into the race. The car ahead (Red & Black) has damage and has been losing positions. I (Black & Yellow) went for a move going into the chase. With the speed difference (10kph), it was tough to decide which side to go into the right kink, but opted to show my nose early and go for the right, thinking I'd be alongside come the braking zone and could pass around the outside for the main left. Done it many times, and have been in and seen numerous situations where going left for the inside has resulted in disaster, as the car head also goes that way to defend or move off the racing line to lift and let the passing car past.
Tried to lift and avoid the contact as soon as I realized my nose was getting chopped, but it was already too late with the speed difference. Resulted in contact, before the rejoining car came back on and hit me. Would like to hear your thoughts.
Doesn't look intentional, just struggling all over the place trying to get it back under control. I'd have thought it would be very hard to hit you deliberately under those circumstances.
It was your fault for sure, he had the corner which you dived in. He might not have done everything he could to not hit you after but doubt it would be protest-worthy.
Clearly not intentional. Hard to control when pushed off track
The thing that makes it look intentional is the fact they try to pull back onto the circuit and kept their foot somewhat in it, especially when coming back onto the track. They could have kept it more straight and slowed the car in the gravel, which does now slow the car at a good rate if you go deep in that gravel trap. Instead they just tried to come back on into the braking zone and spurted the throttle. Hard to tell if the wheel movements was really them trying to gather it back up (it looked like they near enough had it at one point early on the grass / gravel after the initial contact), them panicing and trying to gather it back up, or them masking their intentions to come back on the track.
After the incident, my team mate did say they know them to be a bit dangerous.
Whether the other guy had damage or not, I think this is on you Matt. Last lap? Sure, show your nose and go for it. But I think, given it's still early in the race, it's best to lift off a bit and line up a move down the inside of the chicane, or wait for a better move into the final corner or down into T2 on the next lap.
Not sure the secondary hit was intentional either. The guy could well have just been out of control. Hard to tell, especially without seeing what he was doing with his throttle and brake pedal.
Entirely your fault.
His corner your fault on this one. One hour in there was no reason to push this when theres a major braking zone literally around the bend.
He also didn't hit you on purpose his wheel is completely turning left trying to hold to the inside and regan control, when he touches the tarmac and then he whips around. Probably on a DD and the torque pulled the wheel out of their hand.
Barely poking a nose in entering the chase and hitting the rear of an already damaged car that loses it through the grass after the contact.
Always going to be the outcome there. Needed to be more patient in a 12 hour race.
With the speed difference (10+kph), it was tough to decide which side to go into the right kink, but opted to show my nose early and go for the right, thinking I'd be alongside come the braking zone and could pass around the outside for the main left. Done it many times, and have been in and seen numerous situations where going left for the inside has resulted in disaster, as the car head also goes that way to defend or move off the racing line to lift and let the passing car past. That's what I was anticipating due to their damage and them being passed by multiple cars on the the laps prior and on this lap too.
The actual live onboard makes it look like I'm a lot closer going in too: ua-cam.com/users/liverzew-l0vnbI?si=YLiJV6jHB6idTL4y&t=3102
To quote Martin Brundle, "the throttle works both ways. " ... you don't HAVE to go either side in to the kink.. just chill and get him down the next straight.
Watch again and pay attention to my throttle and brake. As soon as I realise that he's coming across I try and back out.
It's all very easy to say in hindsight after it's happened and looking back on it, but in the moment I thought I'd be able to pass through the chase. I just miss judged what they were going to do.
Hard to tell for me if it was intentional. It looked like he was off the racing line already when he got bumped and just had some issues getting it back under control
TBH he didn’t check his right before taking the line. Defo should have been more aware of your position. No intent though..
