  • Vladimir Putin made further nuclear threats against the West in a major speech ahead of the Russian presidential elections.
Dr. Stephen Hall, Henry Jackson Society Associate Fellow and professor in Russian and post-Soviet politics details the likelihood of this threat as we enter the third year of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

      @@grangetowncardiff6935 feel? you feel?
Lets spell things out: Russia has several dozen bombers capable of launching nuclear weapons. Russia has about 10 nuclear armed submarines that are, to my understanding, nuclear powered and able to hold something like 80 warheads to launch. They have something like 400 ICBM's with a capacity of something like 1185 Warheads. So lets just call that 2000 warheads being deployed on western countries. That is every agricultural, manufacturing, and trade focused centre in the west wiped out.
And then there are the US weapons, guaranteeing the opposite side sees the same level of destruction. Only once the missiles start a flying we are talking UK, France, Pakistan, China, India, Israel all getting in on the show, and that presumes that North Korea doesn't get in on the mix for fear of direct retaliation, and Iran can't - though for how long that remains a "can't" and how quickly Iran becomes a "We may or may not have nuclear weapons" in the way Israel is, is unknown.
      So: Reality check over.
If the US just wipes out Russian forces in parts of Ukraine, especially if responsible for a nuclear attack - that might be the end of it: But, if Russia figures that the US may outright invade, fearing a pre-emptive attack against Russian Nuclear capability they would be in a state of "Do we launch, or see and hope?". And that is one paranoid actor saying "Fire them all" away from absolute devastation of the world.
The reality is, you do not know how well read someone is you are speaking with on the internet. You can guess, but rarely do you know. You do not know what a person studies in their time, or are interested in. And you don't know what they do for a living - so maybe you should leave it alone rather than making side jab personal attacks against people that sound more like insults than they are of reasonable opposing opinion or view.
There is very real reason to be concerned with an overzealous US engaging directly resulting in all out nuclear war. And the risk of devastation is incredibly high.

It’s moronic to expect Ukraine not to strike targets in Russia, when that is where Russians are shooting from (via aircraft over Russia using glide bombs etc). Ukraine has to push those assets back to a distance in order to liberate their country.

The USA has stated that they would respond if russia used a tactical nuke. They would use CONVENTIONAL weapons to destroy every single russian base in temporarily occupied Crimea, DPR and LPR. (Mind you, the Yanks have been a little flaky lately…..but if it’s a set military policy, I’m not sure how the military works? Once they SAY this is protocol, don’t they have to follow through, or are they gonna Obama red line on this one too?)

Putin did not threten to use nukes at all.
What he said was ,if NATO soldiers are send in to Ukraine there is a big danger that the war will eskelate to nuclear war.
      He is right about this.
If it breakes out a direct war between Russia and NATO it will almost certainly escelate to nuclear.

It's okay if you don't know how the russians operate, but let me explain. After invading Crimea for example the russians replaced all Ukrainians living there with russians. They took the Ukrainians from their homes, and relocated them inland, far away from Crimea. Then they relocated russians, mostly voluntarily, to Crimea. With the result being that the citizens in Crimea are now pro-russian, since they're actual russians. Having a poll or a referendum in Crimea results in "we want to be with russia" of course.
This is common knowledge about how the russians operate, google it if you like.

@@AspieTrips Why does this come across as a typical Russian troll "Whataboutism"? You might as well talk about the weather? How does anything you said refute the fact that Putler is a dictator? Just because the USA has the strongest military power in the world doesn't mean Putler is now NOT a dictator. He kills or imprisons his political dissidents, changed the Russian constitution so he can remain in power, he supports other terrorist dictatorships around the world like North Korea and Iran, and openly wants to reinstate USSR with its gulag networks of tortures, deaths and corruption, and allowed the abduction of Ukrainian children. Threatening the world with nukes if we don't allow him to go on a genocidal land grabbing spree is probably the worst any dictator can do. And all the other dictators are watching to see if he can get away with it. So just because the USSR collapsed and now Russia wants to regain its territories, does this mean that the British can also rewind the clock and demand their former British Empire colonies? Russia is already the biggest country in the world, but it wants more to fill the pockets of its oligarchs?

The bottom line is that there should not be a nuclear war. Because there will be no clear winner.

Although I realize that many people may disagree, I believe that the error that NATO has made with Russia in regard
to Ukraine, has been in not being anywhere near aggressive enough. I believe that deterrence is very important. I think that
great efforts should be made to either stop bad things from happening or to stop them from getting worse.
I think that a major motivator for Putin's actions in regard to Ukraine starting with the 2014 invasion and annexation
of Crimea, has been his belief that the West is indecisive and scared and that he could get away with doing pretty
much anything that he wanted to.
I believe that the primary reason for the inadequate reaction of NATO has been fear of a nuclear conflict. Basically,
I believe that through nonsensical bluffs and the West's own independent fear, Putin and his cronies have succeeded
in cowing the NATO alliance into allowing Russia to seize Crimea in 2014 and begin a new invasion in 2022 that could
    result in Ukraine's eventual defeat.
I believe that the chances of Russia's using nuclear weapons in Ukraine is miniscule at best. If Putin/Russia used nuclear weapons,
I am sure they realize that they could easily be "signing their own death warrant" which I very much doubt they have much interest in
doing. I strongly believe that corrupt government officials and oligarchs who spend billions of dollars of stolen money on colossal yachts
and mansions have very little interest in committing suicide in attempts to keep stolen lands in Ukraine. People who are very interested in
worldly goods of great luxury, are expressing a strong desire to go on living.
When Russia seized Crimea in 2014, I believe that the U.S. and the rest of NATO should have told Putin in "no uncertain terms", that if
Russian forces did not immediately leave Crimea, they would send their military into Crimea and destroy the Russian forces
that were present there. If Russia had not complied with that demand, then NATO should have made that threat a reality. These actions
almost surely would have prevented the 2022 Ukraine war from happening and could have saved hundreds of thousands of Ukranian
    lives.
In 2022 when U.S. intelligence predicted that Russia was about to invade Ukraine, the U.S. and the rest of NATO should have warned
Putin/Russia, that if they go ahead with their invasion, then the combined NATO forces would enter Ukraine and destroy the Russian
military that was present. Again, I think that that this action could have very possibly stopped the Russian invasion before it happened.
I still believe that the U.S. and the rest of NATO should take direct and aggressive action now in the war in Ukraine. I believe that the combined
NATO forces should send into Ukraine a very large military force and destroy the Russian military that is present there. Russia is no longer
a super-power and has not been one since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Russia has demonstrated in Ukraine for all to see, that it does
not have a great military. The Russians are well aware that they cannot possibly successfully stand up to the U.S. alone or to the combined
forces of NATO. The only real danger that Russia has is a large nuclear arsenal that I would strongly suggest that they dare not use. Confronting
Russia on a Ukrainian battlefield would in fact not create "World War III". - This is a myth. The 32 countries that make up NATO versus Russian forces that
are present in Ukraine, is not a World War. It is the total destruction of those Russian forces that have invaded Ukraine. NATO needs to "grow a backbone".
China, North Korea and Iran are not sending armies to Ukraine to fight "shoulder to shoulder" with Russia. - This is not going to happen. This threat of
World War III is little more than nonsense that Russian would dearly love for the West to believe.
Russia should be forced to give back to Ukraine, every inch of land that they have illegally seized including Crimea. After all Ukrainian lands have been
returned, Russia should be compelled to pay backbreaking reparations to rebuild all of Ukraine that they have destroyed.
A stern message needs to be sent to all aggressor nations that all they will receive for their actions is military defeat, isolation and economic collapse.

    • @corbeau-_-
      @corbeau-_- 2 місяці тому +7

defense budget is the standard name for military spending. We don't have offensive budgets (though I can name a few). US also has a defense budget which is mostly spent abroad. Vietnam and Iraq were similarly tactical in nature, not so much about defense. Self defense is pre-emptive offence, disabling an enemy... on the whole it is a very selective and deliberately confusing term (defense budget sounds nicer than warfund, infantry sounds better than cannonfodder, collateral damage is better than ridiculous carnage). Russia does it - Putin logic, to defend the honour of greater Russia, which has been humiliated by external forces. That isn't just some poorly chosen word, but a whole narrative.
Such language in this context is fine. It's not like they're beating around the bush, like calling it a military operation, instead of war. Technically war consists out of military operations, though. As for the definition:
_A defense budget, also known as a military budget or military expenditure, is the amount of financial resources dedicated by a state to raising and maintaining an armed forces or other methods essential for defense purposes. It covers the cost of military operations such as training and planning, maintenance of equipment, and most of the military healthcare system. The portion of the national budget that is allocated to defense covers salaries, training, and health care; maintains and purchases arms, equipment, and facilities; _*_funds military operations;_*_ and funds the development of new technologies._

Just a bit of information from someone growing up under the Ceausescu regime: most of us didn't need to be deprogrammed, because we never really have been programmed. Sure, we marched, and shot guns, and sung, and waved the flag enthusiastically - but we knew better, though we didn't talk much about that. Our parents listening to Radio Free Europe and the Voice of America, and letting us in, while also teaching us the necessary precautions, did that.

Most of their citizens have tasted the freedom of democracy and barely anyone would love to follow a madman into the abyss. Most of them do because they have to, otherwise the legs of an oppressive regime are quite short.

There's two reasons that Russia would not want to start a nuclear war
    Those are Moscow and St.Petersburg
You have to remember that while Russia is huge and covers 11 time zones, 75% of the population lives in the 25% of the territory west of the Ural mountains
If you look at a population density map of Russia everything is flat, except for huge spikes in Moscow and St. Petersburg
Two nukes could theoretically wipe out of almost half of Russia's population because of how they are so tightly compacted into these two cities
There is the threat that Finland joining NATO presents to the Kola Peninsula
The bulk of Russia's nuclear arsenal is located on the Kola Peninsula and there is only one road and rail line through it because of how narrow it is and that road and rail line are within artillery range of the Finnish border
It would be child's play for NATO to sweep across the Finnish border and capture the majority of Russia's nuclear weapons
Which pretty much means that if Russia goes nuclear they would either have to go all in or expect to lose the bulk of their arsenal before they can use them
Russia is not the threat that we all thought that they were during the Cold War
And that isn't taking into account the effect of aging nukes, corruption and poor maintenance
I am in the camp that believes that half of Russia's nukes probably don't even work
It is expensive to maintain a nuclear arsenal
You can't just put them into a silo and expect that they will still work 40 years later

To assume that Putin will not use nuclear weapons is foolish. He doesn't want to use nukes but he will definitely use them if certain thresholds are crossed. If Russia attacks Ukraine with a nuclear bomb and the USA responds by attacking Russian forces, then Russia will have no other choice but to respond with more nukes against the USA and all of NATO. This gentleman has a child like limited understanding of reality or warfare.

I wonder how much of the money for this maintenance is floating around the Caribbean, so I do suspect that a lot of Russian missiles will fail. However I am sure that nobody wants to put this theory to the test. If just one works it will be one too many.
