In short: Cohesion is the attraction between 2 SAME particles (ex. 2 water particles) and adhesion is the attraction between 2 DIFFERENT particles (ex. 1 water particle and 1 glass particle). Hope this helped!

I want to add more specifically that adhesion is the attraction between the two substances. It also should be mentioned that adhesion occurs due to intermolecular forces, which divide to physical adhesion and chemical adhesion --> physical interaction involves hydrogen bonds and van der Waals bonds and chemical interaction involves covalent bonds, ionic or electrostatic bonds, and metallic bonds. Experimental data suggest that adhesion is primarily due to weak van der Waals forces.

mmm. Careful there. When you say insects are able to skid on the water, make sure to explain why. Insects and water are not the same particles. Cohesion is the sticking together of particles of the same substance.

what exactly causes both is the oxygen particles have a negative charge while the hydrogen particles have a positive charge there fore the oxygen of one molecule is attracted to the other molecule's hydrogen particles creating a bond between them which is cohesion as it is water on water adhesion is when a water molecule binds/bonds with something other than water paper towel, glass. etc
