Do deer whistles prevent deer-car accidents?

- This is peak deer season in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky, and no doubt you have seen dead deer laying on the side of the highway at some point. One Warren County, Ohio man, whose wife was in an accident with a deer, is wondering if deer whistles might prevent it from happening again. Jim McHugh says his wife recently hit a deer, causing more than $12,000 damage to her car. "A deer came out nowhere, hit the front of her Lexus," he said. "One minute she was driving, the next there was a deer looking at her through the windshield." So he decided to pick up a set of deer whistles, sold at hardware and auto parts stores for as little as $10 a pair.
I’ve used these for over 40 years and more often then not, they do in fact turn away or stop their movement. I drive 3,000 miles a month in heavy deer country on back country roads in Missouri and I will testify they do actually work.
how many do you have installed on your car? I am interested . thank you
@@Cherryhillgoods it’s important to place them low on the front bumper, one on each side.
Thanks!
the speed of sound is 767 MPH ...
so maybe that guy who did the study must be talking about the Volume of the sound, ( which, for a point source, decreases by 6db / every doubling of distance ), but the sound is still getting to the deer over 700 MPH faster in most cases.....so it has to be good for some measure of safety improvement.
What are you driving? And you said backroads so your not traveling at high speeds with greater wind thrust and engines rotating per second
I don’t care, I’m buying one anyway! If it can save my life, my car and the deer then 10$ is nothing!
I bought the wrong ones, pig whistles now my mother-in-law won't come around.
you funny
XD
“Have you seen deer” bruh wtf kinda question is that
For the people in new York or Chicago
It's great until you see some deaf deers.
🤣🤣🤣
Oh, so the whistles don’t work on deaf deer 🦌
I laughed too hard at this 🤣
This gave me a Good Laugh 😃!!
time to collab with the deer whistle companies, and make some deer strobe lights.
Conclusion. Don’t waste your time watching this segment.
I've used them for almost 40 years. Plenty of deer where I live. Then recently mine were removed, they were not put back on and three weeks ago I totaled my truck hitting a deer or an elk. You better believe I'm going to buy more and I'll buy the ones with batteries and shrill bells and whistles. I don't care who's getting rich off them I think they work.
I saw another commenter mention that he gives them to his kids for Christmas presents in their stockings. What a great idea for friends and family, especially those still on the fence about it! Thank you for THAT great gift idea and for saving Santa's reindeer, especially Rudolph! LOL LOL
Which ones are you using? I'm thinking of the electronic as they claim to be in the white tail deer hearing frequencies.
Boosted my confidence
@@rrtdave Honestly I have used the More expensive and the Cheaper and both WORK equally well!!!! My only advice and something people dont do is check the alerts periodically to be sure sure they arent blocked by Bugs,,dirt etc.!! Good Luck and save your $$$ Electronic ones arent necessary!!
Clint Murray said that
@@bsalley76 what's the best way to clean them without damaging the insides do you know?
It gets louder as it approaches the animal. It does alert them and it does reduces your chances of actually hitting one.
If you check the motorcycles of long distance riders you will notice that they have them on there too.
Municipalities would be the IDEAL test bed for deer whistles. Install them on 1/2 of the fleet, randomly selected, without advertising which cars do/ do not have them. Collect data for a couple years, badda bing
One of the smarter comments in UA-cam history.
Please someone do some Google foraging and see this has been done and documented.
Literally could save lives.
Your suggestion is heavily flawed for all the obvious reasons: you have NOT adjusted the results for miles driven, location driven, skill of drivers, etc. In other words, no "badda bing" there are just too many variables.
@@northwestprof60 well yes ooobviously we adjust for miles driven
agree we'd have to control for location, very important for deer
controlling for skill would be very difficult. there's always going to be some possible confounding factors. randomization helps though.
overall, i agree with your point that it's a lot more than a bing and a badda
I have just installed a ladder rack and it whistles at about 30 mph. I have seen it save numerous furry critters, including: a coyote, someone’s dog, raccoons, possum, rabbits, and it has scared deer back into the woods.
My mom's old Ranger would whistle on a stretch of I5.
Live in co, yes they do work, they either stop and turn back or run away fr the whistling. The only annoyance is... well if u roll down ur window, u can hear the nonstop whistling, but keep them rolled up ull be ok.
"Have you seen deer?"
"Oh yes, we have a lot of deer."
Glad they threw in that meaningful exchange.
Top shelf News Reporting 🤣
Yes deer warning horns do work, I have used them for over 20 years and often drive on country roads.
They work when driving over 35 mph, the only critters I see are squirrels
I live in MI and talked to my State Farm agent about the whistles. He said that SF ran a test in PA (I think) where they handed out deer whistles to 30% of their clients and the result was a big reduction in deer hits. So they handed them out to ALL their clients and the result was an increase over no deer whistles. Which proved that the deer became used to the whistles and began to ignore them.
No it does not prove that at all. For one thing, State Farm doesn't have 100% of market share. For another, the logic is wrong, since if deers hear a car they would avoid it. If a bunch of cars have the same noise they can avoid all of them.
@@jason.arthur.taylor If Deer hear a Car they will "AVOID" it??!! LMFAO!! Then why are their Dead Deer?? LOL!!!
@@bsalley76 blinded by the light
I notice a big difference with and without my deer whistles. Seems like every time I drive at night without them, the deer are closer to the road.
Will this prevent? No, but it sure does help a noticable amount and has probably saved my vehicle and the lives of numerous deer. I avoid driving after dark for this very reason.
I been using Deer Whistle for 29 yrs and they do work I use two double whistles on my 2013 Jeep & my 2007 Piaggio mp3 250ie motorcycle scooter! I live near a lake and there dozen of deer crossing the Roads & HWY!! 🤓
Your vehicle's front shape creates different pressure zones of air at different speeds, and these pressures change at different driving speeds. The change in air pressure at different elevational zones affects deer whistle performance to the plus or negative sound intensity. Deer whistles produce the loudest sound around 38 MPH on average. Mounting three sets of very inexpensive deer whistles from different manufacturers (Buy on different brands Amazon) to create different tones, or different amount of sounds at different speeds do to air inlet shape aimed then mounted exactly forward inline with the centerline of the vehicle stacked in three tears of two starting at the lowest point below the bumper and then up two tears allows for a loud noise zone far enough away to avoid deer collisions when driving at night at no more than 40 MPH along rural roads. So...a combination of slower speed maintained at 40 MPH ( not 55 MPH) and more whistles has kept me deer collision free for 45 years of driving while living next to a large reservoir nature preserve often driving at night to and from home in darkness. Yes.....all the deer whistles are black not chrome, and are mounted just behind the vehicle's observable front skin area surface so that the six deer whistles are hard to spot. Also deer whistles mounted recessed do not get torn off in a rotating rubber flap slapping type auto car wash. Hope these explanations of vehicle air movement around a vehicle moving through the fluid of air and proper mounting tips when driving defensively at no more than 40 MPH help everyone stay deer collision free. Oh if you get tailgated at night that is wonderful ! Pull over, let the less courteous night time driver pass and use their vehicle and insurance deductible to make for a deer collision free drive for you by aggressively wanting to be driving ahead of you at higher speeds. You just can't fix stupid. After miles of spring / summer pollen, Fall dry leaf dust particles, and grit, or Winter salt spreading events that clog up deer whistles to make less or no or wrong tones periodically use a squeeze type spray windex novel pressed close to the deer whistles air inlet to pressure wash clean out that deer whistles air inlet so that they stay clean and produce the proper tone that deer respond to best is preserved because you remove road grime build up which has altered the deer whistles orifice tube diameter that creates the appropriate whistle pitch tones.
1:09 Dr. Pete Scheifele studies animal hearing.
"I've been working my entire life and no one showed any interest in my research. They gave me the smallest office. The physics professors laugh at me in the cafeteria. Now you come to me begging for help. No! It's too late. I will turn the animals against you! They will launch themselves at your cars, causing untold damage! You will pay! No one will ever laugh at me again!"
I install one whistle in my car and every time I get home from work my neighbor ask me if I’m calling him isn’t that weird
i have used them and actually seen the deer go away from my car a number of times.
The whistle gets their attention and makes them more aware of something coming.
It doesn't mean the dumb deer won't jump in front of you but it HAS to help.
I'm not a scientist, and I'm sure this man has better credentials than me. However, I question if the deer doesn't have time to react after it hears the sound, wouldn't you have to be driving at the speed of sound?
Well, it's not just about speed of sound, but how loud the sound is and how far it can be heard. Yes, the speed of sound is very fast, but IF (and I am making this number up!!) it can only be really heard by a deer from 50 feet away (again, that is a made up distance...), then the speed of sound doesn't come in to play. It's about reaction time.
I'm not saying it does or doesn't work. Just that the speed of sound isn't an issue really.
(Note: I just googled a bit and one study had a particular deer whistle being able to be picked up by test equipment up to about 100 feet... Of course, that was one brand/style and some people say it is much further, so it doesn't mean anything per se. Just clarifying!) ;-)
There is the other part too. Even if a deer can hear it and it could react in time, would it?
I've seen deer dart in front of cars they could obviously see/hear.
Just googled some more and a website for deer hunters (deeranddeerhunting(dot)com) doesn't think the whistles make a difference. They sited studies where they tested sounds in the range deer whistles make within the range so they knew the deer could hear them. The deer didn't react. So even tho they could hear the sounds, they didn't react to them...
And I would think that site could sell deer whistles if they wanted to. So I am dubious...
even the professor is cautious in his summary, and implies that if one combines slower speeds with whistles, they may indeed work. Like the man said, "they can't hurt" and they "may" work. So nothing is proved by this video or the news station.
40 years ago; the directions said to install them a certain distance apart for them to create/produce the ultra-sound/whistle.
I have had these fitted to my car for a long time as far as I'm concerned they do work any deer I have seen while driving are always running away from my even jumping over the to get away from me also blackbirds and any birds on the road fly away before I'm even close to them
Every car's contour is different , there are wind noises coming off of it ,engine noises, depends on how loud your exhaust is. When I see a deer coming 1st thing I do is honk my horn like crazy that action has helped to avoid more accidents than anything else.
Instead of running Diff. Whistles on a Loop on a speaker maybe the Professor should just run a Tape of a Cougar Scream!! LMAO
I swear by them. I watched deer litterly stop dead and there ears move around like cats. I have 4 on my vehicle. And I watched birds move away from my vehicle left to right or increasing there height. I also noticed that when I drove threw construction zones or when cars pass, there staring at the grill of my vehicle wondering if my turbo is badd ass. That's with 4 on the front tho. I swear by them. I seen the most deer in Nebraska and That's where I saw the deer stop and look and was listening. Also watched a fawn start twoards the road but looked confused by the whistling and turned around. No lie
if everyone has them it'll keep them away from motorways, but it'll also drive every animal who can hear them insane. can dogs hear them?
A doe will run away from a buck. Mount buck horns on your vehicle will be more effective lol.
Yup then if you hit one it will die no matter what and you have a deer to eat
@@briansewelloutdoors8404 I like deer meat but couldn't eat one I hit, last night a deer ran into side of my car and the sheriff had to put her out of misery😥
All ride animal warner works very well on every car I used and all friends cars too ! Saves many lives after 60km/h ! Simple and cheap 3euro price tag. !
The false sense of security is a real thing. If you out them on you may ease up on your driving habits. Better have bright lights slow down and pay attention
Um, I was doing just that, actually in broad daylight, and knowing that deer usually travel in 2 or more, especially during rut, watched a doe bounce across the street ahead of me, so I slowed down to 20 and... BAM! My driver side mirror was in pieces suddenly on the ground and I had gouges in my door and window and a dent in my door frame up top.
A buck had decided to jump my car to impress the doe. He didn't quite make it. 😑
This is after 2 other out of nowhere, literally, hits. One on a highway where it came running towards the side of my car, turned parallel, and when I slowed it then sharp turned in front of me. The other rammed the side of my car.
My daughter hit one going 65 in snow at night. She was driving between these embankments. So there was no seeing the deer before it kamikazied into the road.
So if there's a way to make them stop doing something like that, I'm willing to pay $10 to try it.
Drive during daytime,
Night time reduce speed = less damage
The best defense to keep deer away from your car is a louder exhaust my wife hit two deer with her new car within a month and a half of each other very quiet car couldn't even tell it was running when you were standing next to it we took it in had an exhaust that was louder put on it cost about $300 haven't hit a deer since we see them in the ditch they look and walk back into the woods or just stand there and look same thing with the motorcycle we both ride bikes we both have louder then stock exhausts no problems so far keeping our fingers crossed good luck hope this helped someone
I had a 6 inch exhaust on my fiesta it was really loud I’ve even gotten pulled over for it, few weeks later I hit a deer damaging my hood, bumper, headlights, and the radiator.
Loud pipes save lives but, I would be concerned the noises might scare them into the road not away.
Why is it one whistle opened and the other side closed on your vehicle I don't understand that part
40 years ago; the directions said to install them a certain distance apart for them to create/produce the ultra-sound/whistle.
As far as I understand, one is supposed to scare the male, and one the female deers, but don't quote me on that.

I love ‘news’ reports like this where they use one guy at a university’s study and call it science.
Wonder if belts that whistle work better
I had an accident with a big deer and my deer whistle scared her to the point of running over my truck creating a damage of 18456 dollars Very sad
can you explain in more detail? You ran over the deer or it ran over you?
Maybe it actually saved your life. You could ran into the deer way worst without the whistle.
My thinking is that may not work on my truck but it may make enough noise in time to prevent the car behind me from hitting the deer. Make sense?
6k in damage on my new 2021 Silverado, I'm getting them, And I fken can't stand deer.
Amen. The main road I take to work is infested with the bastards,40 minute commute. Often at 5 am. I do 40 mph tops through that stretch. Assholes ride my tail all the way. Often bright lighting me from behind. Go around me ,prick, go hit a deer.
Yes they do I have them and every deer I see are running the opposite direction for me
I just got hit by a huge buck, it flew into my car coming up from the beach. Nothing could have prevented this I was lucky it did not go through my windshield. these whistles give false sense of security by the time the deer hears the whistle its too late. my car is totaled.
In forty years of using them they prevent a huge wolf from running in front of me he came hauling out of the woods at top speed and Jane's on the brakes.
I have also had 2 deer run out of the woods toward the road and stopped before doing so.normaly they never stop they just keep coming ,they work IMO ,
they still make these?
Someone in the Bahamas is sitting on a Yacht saying...dam right they work. $$$$$
False sense of security? What, if they got them they wouldnt watch out for deer? They just dont wanna spend the effort and $$
Yes, they work. TIL you drive at night, and they fill up with bugs. Then garbage.
lol... 1:10... The truth is out there
I want to believe.
Well YEA of course he’s going to try it! He jus dealt w destroying his damn car. Ive hit one before luckily for me it was brand new so it had to have full coverage
I just got my car last july and twice a deer ran into me, but thankfully I have full coverage, sadly the doe that hit me last night a Sherriff had to put her down😥
We had 2 deer whistles on a Ford tempo, 6 different deer ran into that car before we finally quit driving it, never did knock them off.🤣🤣
I think they do ... I bought a set for my truck about 3wks ago and haven't hit a deer since I put them on
how could the deer not hear it. the sound is constant
By the time the deer is close enough to hear it...BAM!
If they would have read the agreement terms they might would of had a lawsuit
That garbage car isn't worth 12,000$
Blind deer will still hit
They just need to put deer crossings in safer areas. Maybe put deer crosswalk lights up instead of making them cross in highways
I may sound delusional but can we also get a few lamppost or something on the highway so we can maybe see on the side of the roads 😅
At 60 mph no but 25 mph the whistles work
Ignore the INCORRECT scientist
Buy them
I hang a rabbits foot on my grill. It seems to work about the same as the whistle!
All the deer whistles are doing is creating a noise so the deer here you coming, your car is already making plenty of those noises. The quieter your car the more chance of hitting a deer, good luck with your electrics.
I have two deer whistles on my car and several deer have tried to kill themselves in front of my car today so....no it doesn’t work
Might as well try it. I've used a few.
Which ones have you tried?
@@rrtdave well I smashed into a deer in August, do you still want to know? LOL
This is why i ride my insurgent with night vision things just seem day with colored night vision
i have a dog whistle and deer whistle just so i whouldt get dramatized
Don’t fix it if you plan on hitting another deer.
After viewing this and other reports on the subject it sounds like one measure everyone can tdefinitely ake to reduce the chance of hitting a deer or at least the amount of damage caused by a collision is to SLOW DOWN!
Came off the corner no more than 30 the deer entered the road in front then turned back into the road
Turned back into my path and I booted it out of the way . Deer are Weird
I used to use them in nj I dint hit any deer msybe they work maybe coincidence. I may get them on my new car
I mean it's probably better than nothing. I hit a deer last night. My main mistake was trying to swerve. If I didn't I probably wouldn't of hit it. 🤦♂️ Also should of been going slower 2nd deer I hit on the same road.
Get a infra red if you are paranoid
I swear by them.
Had mine 5 yr wk 3rd
No they don't.
Tuna fish vote for does and bucks
I hit a deer last week. Fucker ran across so fast I had no time to react.
Lies lol o got en on my truck they work
My Used 2010 Hyundai Sonata was built like a tank. I hit 3 deer's, 2 died, and NOT A SINGLE DENT ON MY CAR. I never used deer whistles.
maybe slower you go the better they work
Lol. I guess cars travel faster then the speed of sound according to this "expert"
The sound waves from the deer whistle will definitely travel faster than the car, but it seems like they aren't loud enough for the deer to detect until it's too late
Lmao
According to you deer is faster then speed of car.
The brain of any species takes time to process any sound/pain before reaction , the brain does not work instantly.
