    According to Hamilton, Vaughters and Livingston, Ullrich raced the 2000 and 2001 Tours at 43% hematocit (legal limit was 50%). Not saying he was clean, but one could suggest Ullrich was 'cleaner' than Armstrong at various stages of the races in those years. He was also recognized as potentially the most talented rider in the peloton in those days, even Armstrong has said this numerous times.

    • @ian.piepenbrock
      @ian.piepenbrock 5 років тому +7

      davd1986 If true that is incredible. 43% was really low for the EPO era.

    • @spectrum1140
      @spectrum1140 5 років тому +22

      If true, then Ullrich likely wasn't doing EPO. Hematocrit levels for men tend to range from 40-50% (hence why the legal limit was set at 50%). Of course, by 2000 EPO wasn't as heavily used as it was the years before. And yes, Ullrich was defnitely cleaner than Armstrong. At this point, winning in cycling came down to a drugs race and the USPS had funds to sustain a program that other teams simply weren't able to reproduce.
      I still highly doubt Ullrich was clean at all though.

      "potentially the most talented rider in the peloton in those days" is quite the understatement.
      He is considered by many to be the most talented cyclist to ever live.
      The reasoning for this looks at the following:
      1. His junior performances and winning the tour the France at 23, being 2nd at 22 (possibly could have won, but he supported Riis).
      2. His mental health problems. Imagine how much better training he could have had staying healthy.
      3. (most likely related to 2.) His weight problems. Before some tour de Frances he lost weight at an unhealthy pace, which no doubt weakened him. He would still finish 2nd.
      What other rider in history could hope to challenge Armstrong, the greatest doper of all time, with far from optimal training, dangerous weight cuts and a mediocre team?

    I'm a diehard Ullrich fan, but after all the emotion Armstrong crossed the finish line only 7 seconds behind. Sadly, this is not a KO by any stretch of the imagination. And this was Jan's best day against Armstrong in the mountains (besides Morzine 2000). To be an Ullrich fan was frustrating, more pains than joys, but I love him anyway 😂

    • @DjDoubleR85
      @DjDoubleR85 8 років тому

      +axlrosea675 could your please articulate right, and dont start with such as bullshit?and i think you didnt understand me fully, i wasnt saying you can predict how many more blood cells will be produced, i just sayed the better your condition is, the better your talent, genetics ans skills are, the better results you will get from using medecine, it asint just about how many more blood cells are build its also about what can your body do with it.how much can your body use this advantage, and many medics/docs will agree to that, you wont get from a good cycler to a worldclass one if your body, genetics and many more factors aint build for that.armstrong didnt just win in cause of doping if you believe that, you aint understand it, just a few examples armstrong didnt come in too heavy or unconditioned into the contest like some of his closest opponents.all who reduce his wins to the medecine, also think these medecine work wonders.just my point.and i aint an fan of him, quite the contrary i was a fan of jan ullrich, but I must, in all honesty, also acknowledge that he wasnt as consitend as he should have been.

      +DjDoubleR85 Armstrongs advantage was that his body responded better to the drugs given to him than to others (Tyler Hamilton a former team mate made this statement).Talent and skill was not a real issue back than it just came down on how much you could improve your stamina and power output through the drugs.

    I admit I haven´t seen this before. I have watched every Grand Tour since 1983 to today, but from 1997 to 2006, the "golden years" of EPO. In 1996 I had good info about what was happening in the world of cycling: there was two groups of riders. A group had started to use massive amounts of the new EPO (Riis as main example) and the new training methods linked to it.(*) Others, relinquished to use it after some years in which the use of old versions of EPO had a tragic toll of death riders (numbers changes in different reports, but only in Belgium and Netherlands 18 riders died in the first 2 years). The first group swept away the second in the Tour´96... and everything changed for years.
    (*) A pro told me: "It´s is possible to know which one is using it only knowing his training schedule"
    So now for me to watch this images of those years is a rarity. Pity of this people that had to choose between the same questionable methods of L.A. or... be unsuccessful and ignored.

    • @lkb3rd
      @lkb3rd 2 роки тому +3

      Lance made the same decision when he realized he could either dope or be pack filler. It is easy for some to scapegoat him because of his bad personal behavior, but that's all it is. Doping happened before he was born in cycling, and I am confident it still happens today.

    • @gabrielx5477
      @gabrielx5477 2 роки тому +3

      Armstong is an example of how that new EPO changed things...especially when coupled with additional advantages. LA was already a regular in doping, and even with that, it had not reached anything more than being a "pack filler",...but with a victory in a World Championship and another in a stage of the Tour -which he later abandoned, as he did in 3 of his first 4 tours. Not too bad, anyway, but closer to current rider Mats Pedersen (I hope cleaner) than to be a star. After becoming a star thanks to the new EPO, it is said that he tested positive twice and traveled to the headquarters of a certain organization with a briefcase full of money. It's a shame this hasn't been investigated. But we do know that Pat McQuaid called "scumbags" to those who gave USADA data against LA. Taking this into account, he even had an advantage over other EPO-using racers, such as Ullrich himself.

    Armstrong is the biggest user ever. His dope was of the best quality. US dope was better than EU dope.

    well my dear fellow , you believe in what you believe, i'll believe in what i believe..and him beating cancer is amazing as it is with any other human being who does it. As it is amazing for someone that lost both his or her legs to use prosthetics and run again, ride a bike again and do their lives again as many other ppl with many other conditionalities...i'm not reducing his battle against cancer , i just don't believe him as a cyclist which is entirely different, and as i mentioned in

    No,i accepted we have diff opinions about it and i was avoiding confrontation.he was in a team,where they all took epo...yet he did not?? weird.plus, he would not be the first to never acuse epo or any sortof doping in any test and taking it all the same.there have been cases where cyclists were never caught yet still admitted later on..u might wanna investigate that. Plus, i personally never believed in lance a a cyclist as i said previously..i reserve myself the right to have my opinion

    If Armstrong is not anymore the official winner of tour de france 2003, then it is outomatically Jan Ullrich who made 2nd place?

    • @kurtdezutter8047

      It used to be like that. But somehow the Tour direction knew Ulrich would be banned. And the 3rd one (Vinokourov?) and so on, as everyone was doped. However if the 2nd or 3rd would have been French, they would have passed it on immediately. I remember that when the news came out, the french tv invited Richard Virenque. Literally God in France, but the bloke was drugged up to his eyeballs, and was even fired from his team for doping. But ey, it waz a frenz cycliste!

      Armstrong level of Doping close to 100% at this time (Leader) / Ullrich in the early years only by 50-75%
      Doping is not just doping.
