Es handelt sich um eine Ballade von Börries Freiherr von Münchhausen, der im Gegensatz zu vielen Altadligen einen sanften Rechtsdrall hatte. Darum wurde das Lied seinerzeit in der Schule gesungen.

Why call it a Landsknecht song? Its more of a Bauernsong. But I guess it is the Wandervögel style.
