According to reports, and I'm not sure whether this is what precipitated the 6 month suspension or what initially happened to land Valeri Nichushkin in the Player Assistance Program, police found a young woman Val's age in his Seattle hotel room highly intoxicated and in some distress. That's an awful situaiton. I don't blame anyone for the suspension except him. With that said, I'm sure if you go back to the 70s and 80s, because society and the media were in a very different place, there were a lot of these kinds of incidents, but because teams could hide it, like we saw with the horrendous Kyle Beach scandal, nothing was ever done and we never heard about them. Thankfully, we're coming to a different place in society and while it's far from perfect, we seem to be headed in the right direction as far as cleaning ourselves up, not just in sports, but in terms of what we as a society believe is acceptable behaviour. You want to get smashed and do things that only affect you in the privacy of your own home? That's your business. But when it involves another human being, then we have a serious problem. I'm torn on the Avalanche players' response to this. They seem very supportive of him, which is understandable, but I understand another person was involved in this, and everyone's just forgotten about her because she's not famous or a talented hockey player. She's going to need help too and unlike him, she may not have the resources to get that help.
