Dear Rivian, I have an idea….

- I got called to go find and rescue a couple of stranded teenagers who took a trip up the mountain to go play in the snow and didn't make it back. But after we unloaded at the staging area they called to say they had gotten themselves out, so we waited at the bottom until they got down. While we waited we checked out a @RivianOfficial truck that was parked there and checked out the clearance for tracks. I've heard a lot of good things about the Rivians and after seeing one cruising through some pretty good snow, thought that it would be a lot of fun to put my tracks on one and see how an EV does on them! If anyone has any sort of contact at @RivianOfficial , send them this video and lets see if we can make this happen!
My wife and I are heading to the CES show in Las Vegas thanks to EcoFlow (don’t worry, Grumpy is staying home with the dogs) and it looks like Rivian is going to be there, so I’m definitely going to their booth to try and pitch the idea to them! This channel is currently at 4.7 million monthly views with a unique viewer number of 1.6 million, and the majority of the audience is in the 40 plus range, so hopefully they find it worth it to see what these trucks are really capable of and how useful they can be in recovery situations!

Do I want a Rivian as a full time vehicle…. No. EV technology is advancing rapidly, but they still aren’t where they need to be to be practical for my use. I do think that time will come though and when it does I would absolutely love it.
I want to get my hands on a Rivian (or any electric truck) for a week to try out with the tracks and see how they do. Obviously range is the biggest issue. But that range is a huge variable and changes drastically in my Jeep depending on the conditions it’s in. Pushing through deep and heavy snow the worst I’ve seen is just over 2mpg, normally it’s well over double that. But one of the main reasons for that drop is that it’s taking absolutely everything that 200hp has to push the Jeep through the snow, and the higher percentage of an engines power you’re using, the less efficient you’ll be.
The Rivian has 800hp and the additional load of pushing through the snow would be a much smaller percentage of its available power than it is in the 200hp Jeep, so I’d really be curious to see if the efficiency drop is less with the EV, since it’s not having to work nearly as hard to do the same job.
On top of Al that, I bet it would easily go 50 miles, and since the vast majority of my recoveries are less than 20 miles round trip, that would be plenty
To be clear: I definitely wasn't saying it was a bad idea. I'd *love* to see the test!
Well, when we get our Rivian, you're more than welcome to try this out! It would be an awesome experiment. Unfortunately, we're still pretty far down on the wait list...but you never know when that could change, eh? ☺
@Rivian where y’all at?
Cold weather may reduce range?
@@travelnc2g WILL reduce mileage.
As I truck driver I can say there are so many times I come up on an accident scene completely blind due to excessive strobe lights. I’d much rather be able to see what’s going on definitely
Absolutely...shit aint gotta be THAT bright!
If the engineers were allowed the
time , they could _EASILY_ reduce
the brightness via software , but
the _MARKETING_ _Dept_ has got
the ( typically: "know nothing" ) CEO's
convinced that a) Brighter is Better
b) it's _FLASHY_ !! (sorry!) & _COOL_
c) _anything_ electronic is certainly
better than analog , yada yada yada 🤮
⭐ CHP has it right . FLASHY to the front so people get out of your way. Tone-down the rear ( several of our local depts just use their dim 🔵🔴 "omnipresence lights" & a dim amber derectional "meteor" beacon ( L or R ) to direct rear-approaching traffic )
Having only 2 choices , SUPER BRIGHT for daylight , & a "night mode" , which is often _still_ too
bright ( depending on manufacture , or installer ) is RIDICULOUS .
@@rythemzlatin every cop up here in BC has dimmers on their lights and they actually use them a lot. However it’s the tow truck drivers and even worse the flaggers that run lights so bright you can’t even see what sign they’re holding up.
dimming and scene sync (all the lights sync between vehicles) helps a lot as do the 'calming' modes when used
The same with some road signs in the UK, they are so reflective it is impossible to see past them due to the reflected light to assess the hazard they are warning about!
Being retired law enforcement your absolutely correct. Moths to a flame. Very dangerous.
I’m from California where the CHP did a very extensive study on this. They made it standard practice to turn off all rear facing lights after the vehicle pulled over and simply run their four way flashers while on scene and saw a dramatic drop in the number of cars being hit.
I think the super bright and fast flashing LED lights are the worst thing to happen to emergency vehicles.
It’s called target fixation. Same concept as keep your eye on the ball. You go where you are looking. As a motorcycle rider I learned early to look at the path where you won’t hit something not what you might hit.
@@CaseyLaDelle those new LED lights on emergency vehicles are way too bright. one passes you in the dark and you can't see anything for awhile. the old "don't stare at the light" doesn't work well when it's wet or snowy and those damn strobes are reflecting from everywhere.
@@CaseyLaDelle Very interesting opinion and thought. Love new and different perspectives to think about. :)
@@CaseyLaDelle These pickup drivers have those new headlights that burn corneas as they come up my rear view mirror. Being in a car those headlights go straight down into the mirror. Seriously I had to move to the next lane quickly. Going 75 wasn't fast enough for him I'm sure....
I've driven past police cars that were so lit up that it was hard to see if there were any pedestrians standing near the car. I've even seen a guy walking his dog in the road (where there are no sidewalks) shine his flashlight in my eyes instead of down at himself and his dog as if my being blinded was going to make things safer for him. Extra lights and flashing lights can be a hazard for sure.
School buses are terrible too
Yes I agree Police and emergency vehicles have excesivley bright strobes, I have stopped and asked if they could turn them down and they have said yes but he didnt know how! The cop strobes are so bright they could and maybe have caused accidents ,
93,000$ for that EV Truck….no way!
Yeah definitely. Every time I pass an officer at night that has pulled someone over, they are incapable of turning off their flashing lights AND their spot lights, almost as bad as the increasingly large number of people that are too dumb to realize their brights need to be flipped off when driving into oncoming traffic
Hey Grumpy, We ALL love his tracked Jeep! Just for the record, we love you too.
Yup what he said
10:46 minutes about nothing and we all enjoyed every second of them! Good luck on the Rivian collaboration, would be cool to see how the perform!
#Rivian Could get some of the best advertisement money can't buy
Casey you & Grumpy are total entertainment.
Hope the kid’s parents watch this video.
just found your channel casey awesome to see locals help out. im from vancouver Wa cool to see rescues in our backyard
You may have done “ absolutely nothing “ , but you did it very well ! 😂😂 !
*_A day In The Life._* This is exactly the kind of thing you have to do to be a *_Casey LaDell_*
Thanks for all the fun uploads last year.
Thanks Casey and Grumpy. ❤️🇦🇺🇺🇸
I was doing absolutely nothing watching you do absolutely nothing, so it all worked out.
You having a Rivian will certainly be interesting to see, if nothing else. By the end of the first week, I could see you having the bed full of Eco Flows and a solar panel for the tonneau cover. It would be a great collaboration between Eco Flow, Rivian and you..
Now that would be something #Ribbon #EcoFlow
Yup! I did enjoy you going out and doing nothing.😁 Always enjoy the back and forth between you and Grumpy! Good luck on finding out about the Rivian and the tracks thing. Hope you and Grumpy are having a Happy New Year!!!
Just switching to the all terrain 20 inch tires on the Rivian vs. any of the other 21 or 22 inch road tire options Rivian has reduces the range by 40 miles. Yes there is lots of torque but adding so much rolling resistance of tracks alone…plus snow conditions/depth…I’m guessing the range will drop significantly. Would be interesting to test.
Given the hit in MPG in the Jeep, I'd be surprised if an outing in the Rivian didn't burn through the battery capacity before completing a job. And I'm not against EV's, I think they're great!
@@MiscDotGeek yep, you could call me an EV fan girl, to such an extent I built an electric beetle 30 years ago, An EV is utterly and totally unsuitable for the kind of work Casey does in the winter, or for that matter heavy haul OTR trucking the new Tesla idiot mobile seems to be targeting. They are bloody brilliant in urban areas, contractor work rigs running power tools, as a self contained leisure camping setup and for that daily commute.
I would have thought with 4 tracks, below freezing, heaters on full and ploughing through deep snow the range would be barely above 10% of that advertised.
Hi Casey, I really like your idea, but as an powertrain engineer working for a large truck manufacturer, I see some really high hurdles to overcome in terms of range with your planned set-up. You mentioned once having a fuel consumption with the Jeep of around 3 MPG. If I take this as a rough value to calculate the range in a tracked Rivian, I assume even with the largest battery of 180 kWh a range of below 50 mls in best case. I‘m not so concerned about the low temperature performance of the battery but the driving resistance you have to overcome in deep snow with tracks and eventually towing another vehicle is enormous. You would need something with a ICE range extender simply to refuel in an emergency situation where you can‘t recharge somewhere remote. Probably the 24‘ RAM REV could be a nice concept for you. Nevertheless, good luck with your idea!
As someone that does serious snow-wheeling (with an ICE vehicle) and who owns an electric car, I agree the range would be low. But I would suggest 10 to 1 would be about the worst case. Thus I suspect the normal 260 to 400 mile range (depending on battery pack) of an R1T would be around 30 miles in really bad conditions, maybe 60 miles in average snow conditions. This is probably adequate for most of his recoveries since he would be trailing to the vehicle most of the way.
But the weight is likely a big problem. With tracks and gear an R1T would likely weigh over 8,000 pounds. His Jeep is maybe 5,000 pounds? This large increase in weight would really hurt the tracks ability to go at all in deep snow.
@@andrewsnow7386 jerryrigeverything just released his Rivian towing video. 10,000 lbs. 26 degrees F. Max like 100 miles of range or used up 2/3 of the battery. Pushing snow with tracks you won’t have regen brakes to gain energy back like normal towing like he had and is going to cut the range dramatically.
If you burn more gas than expected…big deal… add some from your can or have someone bring you some as Casey had happen to him. Running out in the Rivian in the middle of the woods would be a nightmare. Might want to test a generator that can charge the Rivian first before heading out or figure a back up plan to tow it out.
Uh oh mom and dad just saw how you were driving kids!
Yes Casey, Rivian tracked would be ultra cool. The anti rotation mechanism is essential if off-roading thru very uneven terrain like culverts and going down off the roadside into a ditch.
You never fail to entertain or inform Casey, I'm always happy to see that lil notifiction, 👍
Cool idea for Rivian. You mentioned your survival gear and first-aid kit. As an old ER nurse and Fire-EMS guy, first-aid kits and survival gear are high on my list of interesting things. Have you done or could you do that and maybe add in straps and chains, etc you use. This might be helpful to some of use that enjoy the great outdoors. Thanks for the content, always enjoy Grumpy visits, great videos for knowledge and entertainment.
Casey and Grumpy go for a ride and talk about stuff, I’d watch another episode or three. Thanks for taking us along.
Thanks for sharing! Stay safe and good luck with the #Rivian on tracks.
Thanks for a year of great videos keep up the great work and stay safe
Good track information. Thanks
Great idea! can't wait to see that video series.
@Casey LaDelle I just sent Rivian a link to this video in a message on their Instagram. I told them to check you out and that you were coming to see them in Vegas! This could be epic!!
Absolutely loved you doing absolutely nothing!
👍👍❤️
Good luck, you deserve that opportunity!!!
You have a great channel I love watching your videos keep up the great job
Agreed 👍 great video
As always. Thanks Casey.
thanks Casey, love all of your videos
It seems like I saw a Rivian in one of your other videos. I would say the battery would deplete quite fast with those tracks. Great video.
This was a good one . Keep your side kick. Good luck at the show ……. 🎉
That would be an interesting setup and test for multiple reasons. It would give a totally different test than any of the EV's are tested for, but it would possibly open some doors for several different industries. It would also give them some pretty awesome bragging rights!!
you may want to think carefully about an EV in the cold and snow with batteries performance in LOW temperatures
Hey Casey hope all is good. Could we get an updated video of tools you carry in your truck or tech or any supplies kind of stuff. Thanks for the Videos.
I'm glad parents called to let you know the kids got un-stuck before racking way up the mountain.
HOLY crap that Ford came flying by!!! I think it would be really cool to have you test the tracks on a Rivian. Can't wait to hear what they say in Vegas. To me it just speaks volumes that you waited for the Escape to make it off the mountain before leaving. You are a great man Casey!
Escape. But yep! FLYING down the snowy road. The exuberant foolishness of youth.
@@dustymojave thank you sorry wrong model. I will correct my comment. As I get older slower is better too LOL
Just my 2 cents about the Rivian, I remember how terrible your fuel economy was in deep snow with the Jeep. You are still going to use a lot of power turning 4 tracks in the snow. With your Jeep, you can carry extra gas, but with the EV you will be up a creek without a paddle.
I never knew why you were sooo opposed to flashing lights, now I do, and it does make sense. They are sort of a "target!"
I thought the middle compartment on rivians was going to be able to hold a spare battery pack. To me able to swap battery like power tools makes more sense than always having to find charging spots. Fuel economy shouldn't be as big of an issue as electric has so much more torque
Makes me wonder if a Rivian can actually break a track because of the torque. I'm not much on electric vehicles but I do dig the Rivian.
That’s something I’ve always been concerned about when I’m pulling heavy vehicles. I know a guy here in Oregon who broke four Mattracks in one season, but I don’t know of anyone who’s done it with the snowmobile track setup like this
@@CaseyLaDelle I really hope Rivian sees this Or a fan just wants to do hood things with their expensive EV pickup 😁
Those tracks are so awesome. Do you have a video on the track specs - like max speed, depth of snow, ...
Eye spy a Zoleo device!!! You should keep that clipped to your chest and be an ambassador or whatever for them. I have one and use it for backpacking/hiking and love it. Seems like they support the backpacking/hiking community so no reason you couldn't get in on it too.
Strobe lights can certainly blind people when you have 80 of them like the cops do. However I have an retired City of Houston exorer with the hazard bar still in place. Twice I have came up to a dangerous blind curve hill and found a vehicle wrecked right at the blind corner where people do 60 mph. I got down the hill and lit up the right lane and got people to get over until emergency services arrived. They worked great and saved another person from wrecking.
Something to keep in mind. The colder the weather, the less utility you'll get from a battery system. It would be good to figure out. Great video, could be entitled "Much ado about Nothing" One thing about an EV is you might want to have an indoor charging area, just to maximize your range. Keep up the good work, good luck with RJ and company, look forward to the collaboration
I don't think an EV would work out well in snow and cold. And you can't just throw a gas can on it for emergencies. (How many times have you needed that extra can when using the track jeep?)
If I recall, they were getting about 2mpg with the tracks on. Interesting to see how the tracks would affect the range of the Rivian.
just carry a generator on the bed
In terms of range, I would not expect the efficiency differences that you see on pavement to translate off-road at higher speeds, because of the tremendous resistance generated by the tracks, but electric vehicles are always more efficient at lower speeds, which should definitely render you more than 6MPGe if that 2mpg number is correct.
Running a winch is what would drain an EV fast
Youth, thanks for being curious and letting me know y’all are out. You passed me
Rivian is made in Illinois. Right up the road from me. Enjoyed the video
I hope there’s a contact out there for you. You seem pretty excited about it👍🏽
I had to tow a Chevy Spark to Casper to meet the dealership rep out of Denver because a couple weeks ago during our -27 below couple days the guys car wouldn't work and wouldn't take a charge.. we even took it to the "super charger" and it wouldn't work.. the rep showed up in a diesel service truck with a Genset on board.. I thought it was poetic..
Casey I don't know Rivan but I sent them your video and told them they should sponsor you and what a great guy you are Hope it help you
" I have soooo many red rattle cans" That will make Rivian have one shipped right to ya.
Good conversation!
That lil ford just flew by like nobody’s business 😂😂
I hope you can get Rivian to sponsor you Casey, sounds like a lot of fun and would be good for them and their R&D!
The rubbernecking will always be an issue, but out here idk about other places, most of the ELS equipped vehicles have light sensors that dim the strobes to a lower output at night. During the day you need more light than at night so this cuts down on the dazzling effect at bit.
Every video from you has nuggets of information that are good to hear. My only suggestion is to give Grumpy a microphone also as I couldn't hear any of what he had to say when you two were outside.
Strobe Lights are a major nuisance, and blinding to oncoming traffic. I'd prefer older flashing lights over the strobes, plus the really old style "Gum Ball" rotating spots. The thing I liked about the rotating spots was on mountain roads doing roadside technical rescues in my Mountain SAR years. We'd have our vehicles on these narrow mountain roads with rope systems over the side, down steep or vertical slopes for hundreds of feet. Oncoming traffic would not see cop car or ambulance strobes until they came around the corner too fast. But recalled seeing the gumball lights on an old firetruck, and how those spots threw color moving across the canyons. Drivers would see the color bouncing off the opposite slopes well before they were close enough for the strobes to not be blocked in the turns. So I added an ambler gumball rotating spot to use only when stopped for roadside work. Noticed drivers coming slower around the turns close to us, it helped a lot!
Hey Rivian. My friends and I in northeastern Pennsylvania follow Casey and would love to see tracks on your vehicle !!!
Rivian with Dual motor. That would be a beautiful thing to watch come by ❤ Awesome with a huge diesel
Yeah now wonder they went off the road! Tracks on a Rivian would be awesome!
Rivian or any other EV: Hey, you have a terrific idea there! I'd really enjoy seeing your tracked Rivian in the snow experiment! The bigger topic of being ready for an EV, well, I admit that's not me. I cannot afford it, and the problem of recharge when driving range and finding a charging station just do not compute is a major concern. A gas or diesel engine I can "recharge" from a fuel can no matter how from a fuel source I manage to run my tank dry. That takes a few minutes. But electric? Run the battery down by error or mishap, leaving you unable to reach a charging station, and you are stranded. You either need a tow truck to rescue you, or a generator with enough fuel to plug in and give you charge enough to get moving. Either way, "Range Security" is just too big a worry.
The other thing is the high price. Now, I get it, early models are pushing that tech envelope, packing in the features, appealing to early adopters with the dollars! This is good, it develops and popularizes the technology. Problem is, most buyers cannot afford and do not need the bells and whistles. Most drivers need much more basic EV approaches, leaving the toys and tech-nerd added golly gee whiz gizmos out of it. I do not need or want self-drive, games or movies on a big dash-mounted tablet. I need performance to maximize normal use operating range NOT my fantasies of race car acceleration and horsepower. In a nutshell, PRACTICAL is what I need.
Would have been nice if those kids had stopped and thanked you for coming out !
Love the channel. Is the dash bar with the oh shit handle custom or home made? I like!
You need to make friends with the now you know channel.
Zak and Jesse have a Rivian and are always doing cool experiments.
That thing would look awesome on tracks
I hope Rivian work with you on the tracks. I’d love to see the R1T with tracks on. Are you going to be filming at CES?
Yep
Can't blame Grumpy, if you asked me I say, Yeh!
I'd love to go on a rescue with you, especially in the Tracked Jeep.
You may not need the tracked Jeep, but its more fun😊👍
Pesky kids getting unstuck 😆
Ooooh, tracks on a Rivian now that would be something to behold.
cool concept and good idea, would love to see an ev on tracks
Casey,
I love the Rivian idea. I hope they realize what a great marketing opportunity it would be to donate one of their trucks to you! It would showcase what a bad ass truck they've made, how humanitarian minded the company is considering you donate your time to people in need in extreme situations, what a loser Elon is with his Uber elite bullshit, etc. I really hope you're able to work something out with them! Good luck!
I've actually transported brand new Rivians here in Tampa, Florida. They are quite abit heavier than you would think and total large tablet controls...Beautiful vehicle...Would have awesome power 🛻🌬🌬🌬🌬
Great advertisement, Desal Dave would be proud.
Hey Casey I know you mentioned before but what brand tracks do you have? Thanks.
I enjoyed your video. No strobe lights. They are blinding and can cause some people to have seizures. I would love to see you doing rescues in a Rivian with your tracks on it, even if it was only for a day or two, but a week or more sure would be nice.
ENJOYED THE VIDEO!
ALWAYS ENJOY especially when Grumpy is involved.
I know some parents that might not be so happy seeing that Escort fly bye so fast, at least if I seen my boy do that after sliding off road he would be riding a bicycle for a while. I know I know that is just how boys are. I be happy about they got out but after I seen that the boys would probably want to be back out there stuck than be home with me. 😉
GOOD LUCK with the Rivian!
BE SAFE! KEEP YOUR HEAD UP! 👍
You can get "hidden" strobe lights (mount inside other light lenses or behind the grill). Most of the PDs I do work for uses these for their unmarkeds. And despite the current terminology, they really aren't strobes (which draw a lot of current) but high output LEDs.
Good Luck
I work for Onan Cummins diesel Generators in Irvine and I have seen Rivian people over Cummins I don't promise anything but I'll show your invitation to them and hopefully something good comes out of this. As you might know Rivian headquarters are also in Irvine California.
Hey did the new tracks come with the Casey snow removal from the hub scraper. 🦅🇺🇸💪😁👍
1:21 You should check The drive shaft universal joints make some knocking noise ?
Good video!
Poor track jeep, just wanted to be out and explore.
And yes, I absolutely want to quit my job and move out there to beg to learn how to do this! Definitely looks like the best job ever
Hey Casey....
May have been "much ado about nothing", but we loved every minute of it!! ....
I have to wonder if the parents of the kids in the "previously stuck" vehicle watch the channel since they were the ones who contacted you initially....
I know if it were MY KID, and I saw them flying down the road like that, the keys would be confiscated for QUITE a while..... (since the parents let you know the kids got out of being stuck, you'll need to let us know if you get an update from them regarding the kids driving!!!)
Grunpy's ALWAYS a great ride along addition!!
Safe travels, friends❤❤

The tracks look so much better on the TJ but I'm not complaining because we all know how little storage they have
Yeah the TJ has been a huge problem with gear storage and the ability to take the customer out with me to get their vehicle. It’s a very nice and capable rig, but not very practical for my use
That would be pretty cool!
JerryRigEverything seems well connected with rivian and i think he’d love that idea too
Got to love Grumpy!
One of the best do nothing video I've seen 😄😅😂🤣🤣😂😅😄
1810 I was up that road on New Year’s Eve it got deep.
You crack me up !!!
And that's a good thing , because I'm a grumpy old fart like your friend ! Maybe a bit younger, but not by much.
HAPPY NEW YEAR
Be safe !
I will say it again.. Rivian thro this man a bone!!
nice boss you are , leaving grumpy home to man the phones cheers
Would be cool if Rivian had an option to trade 3 quarters of the battery modules with a 24 to 30 kw standby generator and tank fully integrated with the charge system and body. Really 60 to 120 range worth of battery and caps to even out demand and get you home. Perhaps hood and roof with a moulded panel for trickle charge, even if just accessories.
Ooh, exciting!! 🤗
That would be awesome
Hey Casey look up a made for TV series called “Long Way Up” in that show they have 2 off-road Rivians that drove from the tip of South America to LA
As you were talking about the storage on the Rivian, you forgot to mention the frunk. I really like the Rivian truck, however I am concerned about the viability of their business. They have been challenged by delivery schedule, and have suffered from problems common with new vehicle start ups. I bought a Tesla Model S when they first came out, and lived through the growing pains.
A tracked Rivian would be really cool. Plenty of horsepower and torque. If some of the new batteries with claims of significantly higher capacity and quicker recharge time work out the range issue should be resolved. Maybe ad a custom battery heater for cold weather. I hope you get a chance to try one out.
I wish I had a contact for you. We lost some guys where I work now to Rivian, but they have all quit because of being overworked trying to get the vehicles out. I worked in that factory from 1994 to 2004 when it was a Mitsubishi plant. They are built 18 miles from where I live in Normal, Illinois. I hope you get your hands on one it would be a great video.
It'd be cool if you put tracks on the wrecker or have the company who makes the tracks make a custom set for your wrecker it'd be even colder if they can build a set of tracks for a flatbed
I'm looking at the Rivian R1S, and have used EV charging sites to plan our routes to our favorite destinations. We normally stop for lunch/dinner along the way (usually happens at the state border), so charging there would not really add any time to our travel. A bio-break along i-10 in our usual spot may only add 10 minutes to the total. We would arrive at our destinations with 20-30% left in the batteries. Charging overnight at the hotel or a fast charger near one of our stops (Disneyland, Universal Studios, Aquariums, etc) would keep us charged up.
Pretty Kool.
Shoot for the stars, if your goal is big enough to you the star can fall to you.
Where did you buy the utility mounting bar to carry all your electronics on the dash?
