I’m excited for this video! Don Cornelius really was the goat for creating groups from Soul Train. Both Jeffrey Daniels and Jody Watley were dancers on Soul Train before Shalamar. I think it’s time to give Jody Watley her flowers. An unsung pop star that is greatly under appreciated 🌹🌹.
Cornelius set up the label - but didn't "create" the group. Simon Soussan and UK DJ Ian Dewhirst came up with the recording 'Uptown Festival' and also the name. All of this was widely documented at the time in UK's Soul magazines.
I think you're right about giving Jody her flowers. She probably would have agreed to do a reunion with the group if her experience hadn't been so negative with Howard and others.
My best Shalamar joints are Take That To The Bank, The Second Time Around(12" version), Right In The Socket, Make That Move, A Night To Remember, and Over & Over
Jody is beautiful! Their time as a group spawned classics that are still played to this day. Juicy Pop, thanks for posting that Jody Watley letter link. She served piping-hot tea and receipts!! I stand with her. She deserves respect and her flowers too.

Jeffrey, Jody, and Howard were my favourite lineup (admittedly the one I knew of). so proud of their success in the uk 🇬🇧’make that move’, ‘second time around’, ‘there it is’, ‘a night to remember’, I can make you feel good’ and ‘friends’ are my favourites 💜

This is fantastic! I've been a fan of both Shalamar and Jody's forever. I never understood some of the backstory. But I'm happy that all involved are still doing their thing......and doing it very well.
It's sort of bittersweet to learn that there was some "tension" going on there between these talented people. Their music really inspired me towards other R&B artists as I grew up in the 70s and 80s. This style really shaped my mind in my belief that music is really universal. And their ballads helped to shape my heart and in what I have come to believe love is, both friendship and romance. I prey that God shines on them for all of the happiness that I experienced from their beautiful voices and faces.
I do remember that series Jody did about the unsung episode. She really cleared up a lot of things. I'm still a big fan of Shalamar maybe one day the original group will unite.
My favorites by them are "Dancing in the Sheets" and the brilliant "Second Time Around" so many high quality dance tracks, not just the ones that received radio play
I love Shalamar and have so many great memories of their music. There's been a lot of acrimony and blame shifting through the years. I wish there could be forgiveness and letting go of the past.....doesn't look like it's happening any time soon. Such a shame.
Shalamar is classic music stuff! And I don't blame Jody for doing her own thing and maintaining her stance of not wanting to reconcile with HH. A year or two ago, I watched a YT video of him asking for forgiveness regarding the past strife between the two of them. Well, sometimes the damage done is so great there is never any going back.
@@MCharlerySmith I've seen it too. My favorite all-time group. Why the turmoil when you have such success? Whatever name they would’ve had their talent would have carried them regardless.
They were the hottest R&B/soul/dance group in the UK for a couple of years. They could do no wrong. Stepping away from the traditional R&B outfits with everyone in the same suit and embracing the New Wave aesthetic meant that more UK kids could identify with the band. Pity the egos, petty jealousy and bad management ripping them off was the final straw just at the height of their career- they had a couple of good years left in them.
Shalamar fans are probably wondering how come Jody doesn’t put her differences to the side and reunite with Jeffery & Howard and go back on tour as Shalamar and make that $$$$$$ while everyone still can! Well, it ain’t gonna happen cause Jody despises Howard Hewett & that’s because Howard was very rude & disrespectful towards her, while Jeffery Daniels, her former boyfriend , didn’t do or say anything to Howard, and after a while Jeffery would sometimes take part in it also, so Jody was taking the abuse from both sides. After awhile Jody realized there was not gonna be any reprecussions against Howard cause he was the front man/ the voice of Shalamar and the records were selling cause of him, that’s when she started to distance herself from the guys and later walking away from Shalamar and never looking back. Howard doesn’t deny it, his excuses we’re; we were young and I was immature back then! And all these years, us Shalamar fans we never knew what was the real truth behind the split, both Howard & Jeffery had their own story and it was always the same excuses, money and Jody leaving cause she wanted to do something else! But like they say, there’s always 2 sides to each story and some where in the middle is the truth!
