The interesting thing is though is that the sound is totally distorted by the man playing the violin behind the glass. The beluga would get a totally different listening experience if it’s head were actually above the waterline.
True here in India we have stories of Lord Krishna playing flute and not just Godess Radha mesmerised but all animals used to flok around and walk by him as he played it

I'm a guitarist/composer/arranger,and that violinist makes me wish we could collaborate. Every note is just delectible! And I was a Nightwatchman at the Cleveland Zoo for 30 years. It ended up being a perfect combination. I fell deeply in love with my job. Our animal kindred,let me assure you,have a vibrant inner world like us. They love,feel lonely, grieve and even laugh. Don't ever underestimate them. A few weeks ago,I sat and played guitar on my upstairs porch. A chipmunk stopped by for birdseed,but then she stopped,and just sat and listened. You'll see many more clips on UA-cam of animals stopping and listening. I'm convinced that our relationship with Nature is changing,for something better,deeper and with much more loving kindness.
I don’t think humanity’s getting any better with nature, unfortunately, but I do know that animals have all the emotions you talked about, and then some. Humans didn’t get our emotions out of nowhere - we evolved with them from our ancestors, which were others animals with emotions.
At this point I'm pretty sure it's way sadder for beluga whales in the wild that have to deal with ocean pollution and human dangers, than the one kept in nice and well cared for zoo environments

Just like people have different interest, animals have different interest. The others animals were not interested, but look how focused this cute pie was. I was expecting him to move along, but even after the music stopped he stood there. I really love animals. They are so precious and innocent like children.

I know these whales! The one watching the violinist is Juno (the silly in the background is Kela). I had the privilege of getting to meet Juno up close and pet him, learn about him, and even take part in his enrichment. He absolutely loves humans and is completely fascinated by us, perhaps as much as we are by him. He’s incredibly playful and curious and loves when musicians visit or anyone else he thinks particularly interesting. He’s an amazing creature and I miss him very much, it’s so wonderful to see these videos of him and his friends in mystic. Also for anyone complaining, he and Kela were captive bred. They can’t live in the wild. Mystic Aquarium is not only a haven fir captive bred or rescued animals but a research center - the workers will document his health and behavior as well as Kela’s and use it to help understand and save their wild counterparts. It was also requested that the whale facility become part of the aquarium as Mystic has a rich history with whaling, and because the local Native tribe (the Mashantucket Pequot people) have a love and admiration for whales - whales are sacred to many tribes.
Fun fact: the ‘bump’ on a Beluga’s head is called the Melon and is used to aid in its receiving of echolocating pulses the Beluga or it’s companions may make, so when the Beluga starts pressing its head against the glass it’s akin to a person pressing their ear to a closed door or a wall to hear the other side better, they are really listening keenly!

In case you were wondering, the man playing the fiddle is Paul Baker of the band Brigid's Cross! The beluga whale is named Juno, and this video was shot at the Mystic Seaport Aquarium in Connecticuit!
@@gregpickett8816 I spoke with Paul this evening. He said what he was playing was an original piece he was working on at the time as well as just riffing the sounds the belugas were making. So, I guess you might call it a duet!
I have to find and upload the rest of the videos we did clap he played other songs but the jerks at the zoo kicked him out and said he was disrupting the animals 🤬 we all tried to have him stay but they escorted him out and he continued playing all the way out and we Clapped I'm going to find my SD card with the rest of the videos 💖

Yeah totally mesmerized. That's why nothing about his disposition changed from the time before he started playing, during the playing, or after the playing stopped. Very clear indication that it was mesmerized by the violin and not that you just happened to start playing violin in front of a beluga that was already sitting there staring out the glass.

I’ve watched so many videos of people playing different instruments for different animals. I always love their reaction to music. And oh so nice of the people playing for animals. It’s totally awesome!
Belugas use echolocation to navigate their environments. Because of this, their brains process sound like ours process vision. This beluga can actually "see" the sounds the violin makes.

This could also be between you and your bored pet. Give them emotional or mental stimulation like this and they might bond with you in unnusual ways. They have feelings but we choose to not interract with them because we see ourselves as somethin bigger than them and i think they can feel that by reflecting our behavior.

This is the third video I'm watching of the same beluga at the Mystic Aquarium being serenaded to. It still politely listens and the beluga in the back is still swimming upside-down. I love it.

I love this. The fact that someone took the time to entertain the entertainment. My opinion regarding wildlife in captivity is not a positive one, and that's all I'll say about that. This, however, is a thing of beauty, kindness and compassion. Definitely brought a smile to my face to see this man taking a few minutes out of his day to play his violin for the beluga is so awesome. And to see how intrigued and curious the whale's response is... So very cool! Thanks for sharing.
He took a few minutes out of his day to get some Instagram likes. The imprisoned whales are so bored out of their skulls that anything new is a curiosity. The 'smiles' that they are born with never change. Like most captive animals they are mentally destroyed.

Captivity for a limited time for the exclusive purposes of rehabilitation and release is another thing. I know these whales! The one watching the violinist is Juno (the silly in the background is Kela). I had the privilege of getting to meet Juno up close and pet him, learn about him, and even take part in his enrichment. He absolutely loves humans and is completely fascinated by us, perhaps as much as we are by him. He’s incredibly playful and curious and loves when musicians visit or anyone else he thinks particularly interesting. He’s an amazing creature and I miss him very much, it’s so wonderful to see these videos of him and his friends in mystic.
Also for anyone complaining, he and Kela were captive bred. They can’t live in the wild. Mystic Aquarium is not only a haven fir captive bred or rescued animals but a research center - the workers will document his health and behavior as well as Kela’s and use it to help understand and save their wild counterparts. It was also requested that the whale facility become part of the aquarium as Mystic has a rich history with whaling, and because the local Native tribe (the Mashantucket Pequot people) have a love and admiration for whales - whales are sacred to many tribes.

Fun fact: the ‘bump’ on a Beluga’s head is called the Melon and is used to aid in its receiving of echolocating pulses the Beluga or it’s companions may make, so when the Beluga starts pressing its head against the glass it’s akin to a person pressing their ear to a closed door or a wall to hear the other side better, they are really listening keenly!

I’ve watched so many videos of people playing different instruments for different animals. I always love their reaction to music. And oh so nice of the people playing for animals. It’s totally awesome!
My dogs have interesting reactions to different sounds, music included. If certain music is soothing to us it’s probably of comfort to other mammals.

This could also be between you and your bored pet. Give them emotional or mental stimulation like this and they might bond with you in unnusual ways. They have feelings but we choose to not interract with them because we see ourselves as somethin bigger than them and i think they can feel that by reflecting our behavior.

I love this. The fact that someone took the time to entertain the entertainment. My opinion regarding wildlife in captivity is not a positive one, and that's all I'll say about that. This, however, is a thing of beauty, kindness and compassion. Definitely brought a smile to my face to see this man taking a few minutes out of his day to play his violin for the beluga is so awesome. And to see how intrigued and curious the whale's response is... So very cool! Thanks for sharing.
He took a few minutes out of his day to get some Instagram likes. The imprisoned whales are so bored out of their skulls that anything new is a curiosity. The 'smiles' that they are born with never change. Like most captive animals they are mentally destroyed.
@@Automedon2 So, basically, you are in agreement with my statement? I just chose not to bash the older gentleman for using his time to do what he could as one individual obviously to stimulate the beluga in some way. How many people even care or think to do something like that? Any stimulation is better than no stimulation. What do you do to eradicate wildlife in captivity? Are you trying to push for a resolution or simply going around complaining about it? I am merely guessing here. Feel free to set me straight. I'm all ears!

@@tommcevoy4872 The bushmen of the Kalahari Desert are almost extinct. Not many Inuits left either. Do you suggest we imprison them, never to be released again, to preserve their race? No whale will ever be released from captivity. They will die there just as many others, who were the last of their species. Captive animals are only the bodies of the species they represent. They display none of their natural instincts.
@The Final Rumbling Everyone's entitled to their own opinions, eh? I sure would like to see your "facts" that show wild animals in captivity do not exhibit signs of psychological harm. Even the very best of intentions by the best of people do not always make their actions right though, does it. Captivity for a limited time for the exclusive purposes of rehabilitation and release is another thing. Having a background in veterinarian medicine opened my eyes to things that most goers of the zoos, aquariums, etc., do not see, and are most likely unaware of. Nevertheless, thanks for your opinion. I will not tell you that your opinion doesn't matter, however. That's simply rude. Have a great day.
