Honestly, yeah, it really frustrates Sonic fans, myself included. And the worst part is we're bombarded from both sides. Sega acts like they don't give a damn about quality in their games, and the toxic minority of the fandom gives fans who just wanna have a fun time a bad name. It's gotten to the point where I'm honestly tired of Sonic, same as with Pokemon. And it sucks because these two franchises made my childhood... I'm hoping that Sonic Frontiers is good, especially since we got Ian Flynn to write for the game's story, but... I just can't deal with this anymore, man... I'm so, so tired at this point... 😣
I just realized a neat little detail. In the round 2 image at the beginning, it has a clip of Sonic saying "This might not end well." A small foreshadowing to Johnny's thoughts on the game.
I appreciate that you covered this game after the PR dumpster fire. It can be fun to get a hit in on the punching bag of the week, but it's nice to hear a more level-headed opinion on things.
Yeah. I felt like he gave a fair review same with Sam because everyone else said the game was just ass. Now they don't want to keep that same energy now that the game is patched
5:55 of all the reviews I’ve seen on this, Johnny had the best joke about the Metal Sonic race pop up. It’s funny because I laughed my ass off when I saw it for the first time too. 🤣🤣
I prefer the Wii version. The “ultimate” version just feels like such a downgrade in my opinion, but I can understand that this is the best version for the people who haven’t played the original.
@@Jackattack359 Not really opinions on SCU are pretty much divided also it's almost the end of October and iirc SCU hasn't received any major patches for almost a month now. Either way I get it's a remaster but calling it the "Ultimate" version just sounds dishonest without the DS content imo.
Honestly Johnny, despite your bias with franchises like Sonic, your honesty about ESPECIALLY any technical hiccups, to just how scummy certain practices can blatantly be, it makes you easily one of my all-time favorite reviewers for games. This comes from someone who was definitely quite the Kingdom Hearts fan, who didn't 100% agree with your feelings towards the story in the franchise, I still appreciate how honest you are about a game with its qualities and flaws. I genuinely appreciate how forward you were about the quality of this remaster especially, I still own Sonic Colors on Wii anyways, so it's for the better that I'm not wasting time on it. Thanks again for being as honest as you are man, and have a good one!
It cannot be understated how much Juan cares about his fans. Just the amount of work he puts into doing charity events and how every outro of his is just filled with love cannot be thanked enough. I really hope you hit 1 mill some time soon. It would be extremely deserved.
SEGA actually gave Blind Squirrel all the tools that they could to make this the best remaster possible. For example, people found animations to the original custscenes in the files despite the originals being pre-rendered. I feel that Blind Squirrel is more at fault than SEGA especially since they changed the game's engine for no apparent reason. I still think that SEGA should have overlooked the project more before release, but I still think that how they set up the remaster for sucess should be awknowledged, the actual final product not withstanding.
I believe they also had a WWE game ported to Switch badly before; so there was precedent for them doing badly on that console. Say what you will about Forces but the Switch version was stable despite the framerate and resolution dip
That's a very fair point but I think while tools are important, time also is and considering the timeframe from Sonic Colors' announcement to release and the many, MANY occasions where SEGA has put out something like this where for some reason many little annoyances and even outright glitches sneak in? It's hard to really throw every bit of shade at Blind Squirrel, especially when we've seen how remasters and remakes in years prior from other studios can actually succeed.
@Sacha Vaillancourt I actually think they used the Hedgehog Engine for the original, similar to Sonic unleashed with visuals tomed back and changes with controls and physics. You're right about the Godot engine though. That's an open source engine that I think was used for the lighting that wasn't credited by the developers. The thing is, that pporting something to a new engine takes a lt of work, and it takes a lot of time to test if everything works properly.
@@sunlitsonata6853 I actually never knew that. That's really interesting. I also consider games like Forces to be some of the best ports to the Switch since it was a game released for more powerful consoles and the only drawback was that it ran a 30 fps as opposed to 60 at a lower resolution. I consider it a really impessive port because they still kept a lot of the background details that made the game feel more expansive, despite the level design being very straightforward. Games like Forces, Crash 4, and Doom prove that there really wasn't much of a reason for this remaster to run as badly as it does.
@@the-aspiring-creator4249 Oh I agree completely. Once again, I feel that SEGA is still in the wrong for not constantly checking on the state of the game and see if it actually was ready to release. I think Blind Squirrel worked on the Bioshock remasters, which are some of my favorite games ever. I may have been a bit too harsh on Blid Squirrel becuase so many content creators like Antdude are pointing fingers at SEGA, which I believe is unfair. I like how Johnny took a neutral stance on the situation since I assume he wrote the script for the video before the information I got was released and was trying to spread out his videos a bit while he was playing Metroid Dread.
Glitches aside I am really puzzled on how they managed to mess things as basic as having a seperate volume slider for music and sound effects and letting people choose between the orginal and remixed soundtrack.
@@jaretco6423 Blind Squirrel’s problem was a severe lack of communication between not just themselves alone, also between their clients. Sega and Sonic Team literally gave them EVERYTHING, and they still fucked it up. By the time Sega was shown the game, it’s not like they could just drop it. They specifically hyped it up in the Sonic Symphony!
wait, people trusted Sega to put out a competent Sonic title after the disaster that was Sonic Boom and the likewise lukewarm/middling Sonic Forces? And after "Sonic 4"? Yeah... I think people hyped themselves up too much for this and realized Sega only cares about slapdash pushing shit out as fast as possible for a quick buck, damn the consequences.
All I'm gonna say is this cold water statement: *Colors Ultimate is a weak port of a decent game.* And I'm also tired of the wisp fiascos from sega. Imagine Unleashed and others get this same treatment. That's NO good!
the worst part of Ghost Wisp inclusion is that in some level they modified by lazily put invisible wall there to force you pick up and use Ghost wisp to phase through it which wasn't the case in the original
IDK, the Wii seems like it's much harder to port than the GBA, and Sega would probably do it in-house rather than let Blind Squirrel handle things. We'll just have to see how well Origins ports the classic games before we make the verdict, as Sonic Team is working on that rather than some other random company.
I'm sure the source code for those games has been long since been lost and if they decide to emulate them, well if it's anything like their Genesis Collection on modern consoles, expect the same quality port as Colors Ultimate.
@@doclouis4236 I highly doubt SEGA would just lose the source code for any of those games. These days every studio keeps a source code archive for every version of every game they've produced, finished or not, so unless a hard-drive was corrupted or lost (a la Pinnacle station from Mass Effect 1), or some idiot didn't archive any version of those games at all, they should be able to make new ports for those games.
@@russellbrown6888 Well... Team Ninja lost the source code for the Ninja Gaiden Xbox games, most other Japanese devs either forget or throw away the code for their games especially if they are console exclusive and were released before PC and Steam became the more popular alternatives to mainstream console gaming. Same thing happened when Konami lost the code for the Silent Hill games and I pray to god that they didn't lose the code to the MGS games because Kojima managed to preserve them for a while but after his departure and Konami wanting to get rid of everything related to his existence... I'm worried.
@@tsyumamatsuthehavenofguard32 Really not sure what you mean by that. Colours never got a wii u port and it's effectively the exact same game just on a stronger system. You might get better colour depth or a steadier framerate lock than the original version but there's nothing special about playing colours on wii u.
@@tsyumamatsuthehavenofguard32 Man It's the same. There isn't even a resolution bump, it's like Sonic Unleashed on XSX, the only benefits are the FPS, and Colors was already pretty stable.

This is gonna be the sadx for today's kids, I didn't have a problem with dx but see the issues with it compared to the original now and the cycle repeats once again
I mean a lot of SADX's changes are more confusing and subjective downgrades rather than sonic transcending reality and becoming a deformed mess while on a LSD trip.
Quite sad that Sega still treats any characters not named Sonic or Eggman as having any importance. Even Tails is nothing more than an exposition generator most times.
They've been moving away from that for a while, actually. There was just only so much that could be changed in a remaster without turning it into a full-on remake. At the very least, they tried making Tails more prominent and actually useful unlike the original
Yeah, Sonic's friends really don't do anything anymore. For me, what happened to Tails in Sonic Forces pissed me off: In the Sonic Adventure games, Tails slowly but surely built up his confidence to the point he disarms a missile AND fights Eggman by himself and wins! TWICE! At that point, he was a young hero kids can look up to since Tails was self-sufficient and able to take care of bad guys by himself without always needing Sonic's help! And then all of that gets thrown away in Forces because Chaos 0 scares him! Remember: Tails defeated Chaos 4 back in Sonic Adventure! This really did anger me and it's really disappointing to see Tails go from a character kids can use as a positive influence to grow to yet another accessory for Sonic because he can't do anything on his own!
@@therighttrousers343 At least Omega appeared in Forces (Albeit for shallow fanservice until the episode Shadow DLC) Cream and Blaze haven't appeared in a single main-series game since Generations... :/ (A decade). Yet in Forces they brought back the Wisps, Classic Sonic, Zavok, etc.
This is the game that did quite a lot of damage to a game that COULD'VE been ported as-is, or had a little oomph to it. Instead Blind Squirrels just gave this franchise's detractors more ammo, but at least the "Sonic was Never Good" argument was shot down permanently because of his multimedia outings finally being recognized.
It's just a shame that the main meat of this property is constantly being mishandled. Like, yeah, I love the movie, the comics have their fans, I'm looking forward to Sonic Prime... but I'm not at all excited for Rangers, or whatever it ends up being called.
7:27 Yeah, it's just the Planet Wisp remixes. I bought the Deluxe Edition on Switch myself, found it odd that PW's music was unlocked early, was informed that those were the exclusive music tracks(a feature which already confused me to begin with, since, unlike Smash Bros or Sonic Generations, Colors doesn't let you choose the stage music, so I thought it could be new, alternate remixes of the main themes just as an added bonus), and basically confirmed it when I saw Inugami Korone play Ultimate on Stream, and none of the Planet Wisp levels had the remixes, but every other level did. which just makes no sense to me, seeing as they're regular stages themes, not bonus tracks of any kind. they're not like the remixes made for the sonic youtube channel a while back or extra tracks featured in albums, like the 2.014k remix of it doesn't matter, it's just the new planet wisp music. I really don't get what the thought process or strategy was here.

gonna be honest. if they cant even handle a port of a past game well without it being inferior to the original. what can sega and sonic team even do now to fix sonic. or is this a sign that sonics gonna be continuing this trend for the rest of eternity
Honestly it's Blind Squirrel's fault more than anything else. Apparently they're just really bad at optimization for the Switch and the ignorant masses like to just blindly call the Switch too weak. Like yes it's not as powerful as other systems, but when you're porting a game that was originally a Wii title it's a bad fucking look when you can't even be assed to get it to run 60fps on Switch (especially when Skyward Sword had an HD port that added 60fps only a few weeks prior.)
Man, I really hate that they eliminated the live system for this game. This game wasn't even hard. I just really hate what they did with a pretty good Sonic Game in general
Now we got a remaster of Sonic Generations with Shadow getting his own game in the package. It’s crazy that Colors got such a poor remaster when the game helped bring Sonic back when it came out
Johnny I want to tell you how much of an impact your videos have on me whenever I feel bad or good or anywhere in between your videos always make me smile and brightens my day I don't know how else to say it but thank you Johnny
I personally find this remaster to be one of the worst and most broken Sonic games I've ever played. The amount of missed opportunities, idiotic design choices and technical issues bring this game down greatly. Even with all the patches that were released for it, it's still severely flawed.
@@dreamcastshadow2970 Never say never. It's always a possibility. I however hope they don't happen at this point to be honest. I don't trust Sega, judging by the way they handle the series these days.
This is why people genuinely question if Sonic was ever actually good. Sometimes I feel like Sega is only so kind and supportive with fan made stuff, out of desperate fear of being dead in the water otherwise. Persona and Yakuza are great, but they aren't kid games, or the Poster Boy of fuck ups XD
Luckily, according to the Sonic wiki, after various updates that came out after this video, the music in the credits now loops, and there have been improvements to the audio mixing, along with the option to toggle between the original music or the Ultimate remixes, along with other various fixes and additions.
The alternate shoes and gloves are really disappointing to me. Compare them to the costumes Mario got in Odyssey, or the ones Crash got in Crash 4. Not only were they full on costumes, but they had a ton of love and charm to them. Mario specifically got a ton of costumes referencing the character's history, which I so wish Sonic got. SOAP shoes? Classic eyes? Boom scarf? Come on, I feel like these are begging to be included and would have made the concept way cooler imo.
@@DoctorMinjinx True. It doesn't help that Smash showed how you can give Sonic some neat cosmetics that Sonic Colors Ultimate could have carried over. Also, in case you're curious, I gave my Sonic the Chrome Red Gloves and the Chrome Blue Shoes.
Not to mentioned that Mario Odyssey and Crash 4 are much better quality games than Sonic Colors Ultimate has. Shoot. Crash Bandicoot: N-Sane Trilogy, Sypro Reignited Trilogy and even Super Mario 3D All-Stars ( despite it's problems ) are better remastered games than this.
As bad as Nintendo might be, they still manage to make alot of good games for each series ( especially Mario ) than what Sega did for Sonic. I just beat Metroid Dread twice and I'm about to go on my 3rd run to hopefully speedrun it.
I literally watched your Sonic Colors review last night while making lunch and thought you would have to do a Round 2 for it. that is some timing on my part
The jade wisp is cool, but I wish they brought over burst from ds and while not required, it would have been a neat addition to have the ds game in gamelan and unlock chaos emeralds through that method
Sonic Colours is now the most reviewed game on this channel! (5 times!) I was looking forward to Colours Ultimate but after hearing how buggy it is & the other issues that make it worse I decided to give it a miss. I’ve still got the Wii version & still enjoy it, I don’t see the need to buy a worse version of a game I like.
9:00 To be honest I feel like this has just sorta been the trend since Team Sonic Racing came out. Pre-release material setting you up for when the game inevitably disappoints. I'd actually be a little worried if the next sonic game got shorts now lol.
What is wrong with this series and its refusal to take even the tiniest win? This shouldn't have even been a hard game to make better, just update the levels a bit, polish the models and graphics, make sure it passes testing, and then maybe add some bonus content, THAT'S IT! How did they not have the time or money to do any of that with their freaking mascot franchise?
9:19 "I would also avoid it on the Switch if possible. Even after the initial patch, its still got half of the framerate and long as load times." Me, who has the Switch version: *Nervous sweating*

Especially because it always comes with the same promise to do a better job next time, only for them to do the same crappy job all over again.
Oh boy, 2 Johnny vs in a week! I don't think I enjoyed Colors enough to warrant a second dip (at least not unless it gets a steam release for dirt cheap), but the reception this got certainly made me glad I had little interest to begin with.
I got the Switch version day 1, and I had the same passable experience as Johnny. I’m glad I didn’t experience the horror stories so many others did, but it’s upsetting that the game feels so undercooked. I hope Sonic Team uses and expands on things like the cosmetics for whatever game comes next. Also, I hope they take their goddamn time to make sure it’s a stable game whatever it is
Honestly the mistreatment of of the game and the Sonic IP by Sega is just frustrating. I don't normally get mad when Sega releases a subpar Sonic game but given that I love Sonic Colours. This botched port really annoys me off as both Sega and Blind Squirrel put in mediocre effort into the port and tried to rip the Sonic fan base off. Not a good look given how passionate and loyal the fan base have been over the years. Blind Squirrel should have never been given this port job as if they can't get a Wii game to run at 60FPS on Switch, despite the fact the Switch has Skyward Sword, Mario Galaxy, No More Heroes 1+2 all of which Wii titles, running at 60 FPS on the Switch. This suggest that they are wholly inexperience with the Switch's hardware. Bottom line Sega cheap out on the port, par for the course for them, which makes me worried about the Sonic Origin collection. As it stand, I agree with Johnny that you're better off sticking to the original Wii version, or the DS version if you want to play handheld. Only play Ultimate if have never played the original and have access to a gaming PC or the PS4/5 and Xbox. Avoid the Switch version at all cost. On the bright it at least Sonic Colours is short so the suffering is short, given that I legit forgot that I owned the switch version. 😂
I never owned a Wii, at the time Colors was released. So I made sure to catch up with Colors Ultimate. Same issues with this, I have the physical PS4 edition. I'm thankful I finally have it in my game library, even though it has its faults.
Colors Ultimate is my first experience with Colors. I found the game forgettable, level designs were hit or miss, and I find it hard to believe this was the game that supposedly “saved” Sonic after a string of bad games. Colors just feels like a functional Sonic Forces, with these really short levels that just come to an abrupt end. I don’t understand how this game has a strong following. It’s very overrated.
After all the shit that came before, Colors became the shot in the arm the franchise needed. Nowdays is not the most innovative game out there but it did its job when it mattered.
It basically fed people exactly what they thought they wanted: an easy game where you just play as Sonic. Because it appealed to the Wii audience, lots of people played it as their first Sonic game, and had no reference for what Sonic actually is. Now those same people are unable to look at it with a critical eye, so we get what is at best a generic, shovelware 2D platformer that happens to feature Sonic being artificially glorified as one of the "Best 3D Sonic Games". The first three words in that quote barely apply to Colours at all.
Just seeing the state this game was released in pissed me off and made me feel a little depressed. Like... why can this franchise not do anything right anymore in terms of game content?
Grima the Fell Dragon. That's exactly been this way since Sonic 06. Sonic was started off strong in the Genesis era and did decently enough in the Adventure series. But after that, it all comes tumbling down when they just don't have the quality over quantity. With the exception of the Advance series & Rush series. Though that was most likely made by other developers at an time. They did manage to get back up again with Colors to some extent & Generations. But than falls back down into mediocrity or just plain bad. Mania is an exception. But that was more towards the fans making this game rather than Sega or Sonic Team. And than u have this " ultimate " version that feels half-baked and unpolished.
I feel like you would've enjoyed the planet wisp remixes had they placed the remixes *after* the original ones, where the progression of Eggman's control over the planet is increased act after act both visually and musically.
Hey John, since you are now doing these Round 2s it would be cool if you looked at Terraria again. It was the first video I watched from your channel and it’d be cool to see your thoughts on it.
This is honestly the first time I’ve actually heard of the glitches in the Switch port. I’m currently at the final boss and the only glitch I’ve run into is the game SOMEHOW maxing me out with all those park tokens and letting me get everything in the shop. Other than the fact that this run has probably been my best run on Sonic Colors EVER, it’s Sonic Colors as I remember it.
What many don't talk about is that most of the people complaining about the bugs in the Switch version were playing on the amulator "Yuzu" but that is information that stayed on Twitter.
I always thought that Rival Rush mode was the developer's attempt at bringing something like the Metal Sonic race from Sonic CD into a 3D Sonic game, and I always really liked that idea.
I feel as if this remaster really ruined the image and reputation of Sonic Colors. I genuinely appreciate how forward you were about the quality of this remaster especially, I still own Sonic Colors on Wii anyways, so it's for the better that I'm not wasting time on it.
Thanks again for being as honest as you are man, and have a good one!
That last quote works so perfectly to summarize the quality of this game
SEGA and Blind Squirrel: I JUST DIDN'T FEEL LIKE DOING IT
Just Blind Squirrel.
The comment "Being a Sonic Fan is like being a Dissatisfied Housewife" brings true every Sonic release

Blind Squirrel’s problem was a severe lack of communication between not just themselves alone, also between their clients. Sega and Sonic Team literally gave them EVERYTHING, and they still fucked it up.
By the time Sega was shown the game, it’s not like they could just drop it. They specifically hyped it up in the Sonic Symphony!
Sadly, Colors Ultimate has greatly decreased fans' trust in SEGA and greatly increased the importance of Sonic Rangers succeeding
Sonic Rangers?
Through no fault of Sega’s. It was pain fans inflicted on themselves.

All I'm gonna say is this cold water statement: *Colors Ultimate is a weak port of a decent game.*
And I'm also tired of the wisp fiascos from sega.
Imagine Unleashed and others get this same treatment. That's NO good!
Well to be fair, Unleashed was kinda glitchy in some technical points.
the worst part of Ghost Wisp inclusion is that in some level they modified by lazily put invisible wall there to force you pick up and use Ghost wisp to phase through it which wasn't the case in the original
I've been hoping that we'd get a advance/rush collection, but after the launch and all the controversy surrounding this, I'm not so sure.
I'm worried.

sadx had a better story, thats for sure.
Quite sad that Sega still treats any characters not named Sonic or Eggman as having any importance. Even Tails is nothing more than an exposition generator most times.
Repeat with me: thank the hate bandwagon of the "Dark age" (sONiCs uSEleSs FrIEnDs) and Sega for actually listening to non-fans.
I miss Omega.
@@therighttrousers343 At least Omega appeared in Forces (Albeit for shallow fanservice until the episode Shadow DLC) Cream and Blaze haven't appeared in a single main-series game since Generations... :/ (A decade).

Sega didn't feel like putting forth a substantial effort in to this re release so Johnney said fuck it I don't need my hat and coffee for this.

The alternate shoes and gloves are really disappointing to me. Compare them to the costumes Mario got in Odyssey, or the ones Crash got in Crash 4.

The original is still good
It basically fed people exactly what they thought they wanted: an easy game where you just play as Sonic.

What many don't talk about is that most of the people complaining about the bugs in the Switch version were playing on the amulator "Yuzu" but that is information that stayed on Twitter.
Glad someone in this comment section is positive.
I always thought that Rival Rush mode was the developer's attempt at bringing something like the Metal Sonic race from Sonic CD into a 3D Sonic game, and I always really liked that idea.
We still don’t have optional music after 2 patches, it shouldn’t be hard to program this. I can do this and I barely program
It is so sad that sega seems to care so little about their own mascot
Just one more reason to never sell my Wii.
@5:15 I know your Showcasing a bug but it looks so fantastic lol
I feel as if this remaster really ruined the image and reputation of Sonic Colors. Although the game was already being criticized before the announcement and release because of SEGA taking all the wrong lessons from it; this remaster has tarnished the positive image that Sonic Colors had. Although Sonic Colors is far from my favorite Sonic game, it is quite sad to see it’s reputation take a nose dive like this.
Considering they’re still fucking up, it’s easy to tell what will become of sonic rangers
I said it once it was revealed and I’ll say it again. ADVENTURE REMAKES!
After this mess? No thank you.
They better not even THINK about SA1 or SA2 until they show they can make a proper remaster.
you still trust them with that after this? smh
@@retron99 He's desperate, Sigma.
