Walking through Lakeview Hotel after James realizes he has killed his wife, while this plays in the background, was one of the best moments in my history as a gamer. I already knew the story of Silent Hill 2, but the remake was the first time I played SH2, and it was a perfect experience.

Yamaoka is insanely talented. Some composers are so gifted at making deeply spiritual and emotional music. Another one that comes to mind is Susumu Hirasawa. But yeah this song is the perfect musical embodiment of deeply harrowing guilt and realization.

As someone who was too scared as a kid to finish the original and keeping myself spoiler free, this song along with the solemn walk through the empty hotel absolutely nailed how I felt after the revelation that James was an absolute monster all along. Game of the year no contest
@@alejandrobonilla3049 James is a monster because he didnt kill mary because he wanted to end her suffering. He hated her, he wanted to get her off his shoulders it was purely selfishness.
James is only a "monster" if you get the Maria ending Every other ending he's a tragic character, a loving husband who was driven mad being trapped in a marriage that had devolved into watching his wife rot away and die, all while she shifted between treating him like garbage or begging him for comfort
pov: when your brain decides to make you remember an old bad memory you wanted to forgot just before you sleep so you gotta stare at the ceiling like this
In the original I had to just stand there a moment and say out loud “James….wtf did you do.” Music is perfect for James’ utter hopelessness and grief and the player’s shock/disgust
This music reminds me of younger me wandering around my house aimlessly at night exploring things I’ve already seen expecting something new or different
When you realize that all hope is lost in humanity, and humans destroy more and more of the planet, and when you begin to question whether everything in life is really real, and if everything we see is not a simulation... I feel that way
I knew what James did going in, but this moment was still so impactful regardless. When I got spoiled, I really thought that I wouldn’t feel any of the weight of the truth- but I’m glad I was wrong.
I always liked this part, because when it transforms into the Otherworld, it's what would be in reality, all decayed and in ruin. Which makes you think, were the other parts of the Otherworld reality, like the apartments or the hospital? Or were they just the product of a troubled mind?
Random but I pretty vividly remember once upon a time I had a nightmare where the blacksmith Andre from Dark Souls chased me around my house trying to kill me with his hammer. We were both moving at like half speed, and this song played during the nightmare.
You’re telling me that after playing a game with Demons, Shadows and a constant looming dread of losing self control, your brain decided to be scared of Andre?
I feel so bad for james but he totally deserves it. He even tries to get Angela's trust by saying hes "not that kind of person". There's some good inside him but the cowardly way he took with Mary certainly doomed his soul.
Depending on the ending you get that's not necessarily true however it seems like I'm in the rare camp of "Leave" not actually being the real ending and maybe retconned a little bit in the remake because fans took a liking to the ending cos the remake heavily implies that is the real ending. its either "Maria" because it shows that James has no remorse for his actions and also means that he will be in this eternal torment forever, or what I personally believe is the true ending is "In Water" where he kills himself because he can't deal with the pain he caused onto himself anymore.
@@ihavebraindamage4445 I personally believe that a fragment of James is forever trapped in Silent Hill only to reincarnate and relive his experience, spiraling downward. I think the evidence for that is the numerous corpses of James and the letters that can be picked up from their bodies that he's written each time he is reborn into the town.
@@ihavebraindamage4445 i think the in water ending is true but Silent Hill trapped James soul there so He'll just end up back to where he started the leave ending I think is him going to the afterlife with Laura everything is a loop especially the remake since ALOT of clues hint toward James did this all before and the original game was the first time he got to Silent hill Silent hill has James possibly Forever depending on his path he follows during his Loop/Purgatory (not saying this is true or canon but Its my favorite interpretation/Theory)
