I am so super excited for you to have a book and a possible tv show? Kick butt. I guarantee it's going to be huge success because people are so obsessed and go crazy for the "man vs. wild/dual survival" idea but the way you give survival/bushcraft knowledge is a million times better way. Awesome Dave and best wishes!
Hi Mr. Canterbury. First I want to thank you for what I have learned from watching your videos. The knowledge you're sharing is saving lives now and in the future. This is a nice product. I am a "common man" with a common bank account and with the info I":ve learned and my $129. sewing machine I think/know I can make a higher quality shelter. Thanks with RESPECT Tim :)
You are a very accomplished man. You have published books. Made DVDs own and run your own school, have your own product lines, etc, etc your family and friends must be proud of you. Congratulations
Thank you for your words on price and common man. Quality costs! And I think that is worth remembering in this age of Walmart values. When I was growing up helping on my grandfather's farm he used to say, "buy nice or buy twice." Thank you again for all you do.
This will probably not be for my needs, but is another outstanding product and another example of Dave leading the way in product development and refinement.
FINALLY...your coming back to TV and by the sounds of it ill be a number one fan(one of many I'm sure) and a new book for the library is always a good thing :)
Love the final product. All your hard work is paying off Dave. I just hope your UA-cam channel stays active when you return to TV. TV is such a waste of time in comparison. All the best to you and your family. You've earned everything that's coming your way now. $400 for a lifetime of use in the woods is a good value.
Absolutely the best made tarp tent vs lightweight vs weatherproof I've ever seen. The quality of the workmanship (as seen in the video), the features... no other tent of this type comes close. This is the kind of tarp tent I've been waiting for someone to make. Price range is spot on for the quality and size. If you spent the same thing on a mass-produced tent, you'd not have near the features or the durability. Thanks for making this happen Dave.
Awesome news brother Dave ! Not five minutes ago I was thinking how great it would be for you to have your own TV show and do kinda the same thing you do here on YT. Well bud, you already have a built in audience of many thousands of us loyal subscribers who haven't missed a single video in the last few years. Guaranteed most of us won't miss a single episode of your TV show either.
Tarp/tent looks great. You don't know how much I appreciate these videos. I don't think the things I like really sell on TV but I can't wait to see what you come up with.
just got mine what a fine bunch of people at tentsmiths live in south east Alaska rain forest every thing about the tent works thanks so much dave as always my camp is open to the woodsman
Dave, I'm so glad to here you are gona be back on T.V. way past time brother! Also can't wait for your book, Keep us updated on both. I also love the idea that there is going to be a Pathfinder air rifle in 22 cal, I think a lot of folks over look the use of them for small game and with the shortage of 22lr they are a great alternative. Also 22 cal pellets are cheap and are readily available at Wal-Mart. Keep up the good work!
You're darn right Dave, common man does not mean cheap..it's about making good decisions with your money and not wasting it. As for the tarp/tent I love it! $300-$400 is a bit out of my price range for the type of things I do outdoors but thats me, if I spent more dirt time or lived in a area with more extreme weather I'd buy it for sure Thanks for your work.
Dave, I am constantly impressed by your ingenuity, enthusiasm, and resourcefullness every time that I watch your videos. I believe that you were my first UA-cam subscription (years ago) and still I eagerly await every video that you produce. As someone who is often considered by friends to be "the smartest person I know", I want you to know that I really admire your intellect, and the scope and application of your knowledge. Your business sense and your understanding of the needs of the commmunity is also spot-on, and you have the energy to see your products through to market - no easy feat. I want to thank you for all of the instruction you've given me (some of which I have passed on to others), and especially to wish you the very best of luck in 2014. Cheers from SouthEast of you, -7
Good discussion on "Common Man" Dave. I think it will vary between outdoorsmen when applying common sense. Sure, if one is blessed to be constantly in the field for long periods of time then quality, heavier gear makes sense. But most can only make a few short visits to their local wilderness and in that respect may not want to spend a lot on gear and are not able to spend the time crafting the implements of the bush while on their short trips. So to them, inexpensive and lightweight is the way to go. You rock and I can't wait to see you on cable again!
I just ordered a 9x9 tarp from Peter. The price is right for gear that lasts a lifetime. That's coming from the working blue collar man. This looks like something I would add to a winter kit in a windy area. Love the design and footprint.
Looks great. To see the evolution of not just the products but the overall business and the attention to detail you have shown shine bright. Keep it up brother. Best as always to you and yours.
Hey Dave, tarp looks great. Congratulations on the new book and show. Looking forward to it. Been a fan since the very beginning, I remember the versa shelter videos. Congratulations on all of your success, it's nice to see hard work rewarded for a change..
Hey Dave, I'm a fan of Tentsmiths, love traditional fabrics, and will probably buy their 8×8 oilskin tarp for an upcoming ski-pulk expedition in Maine. That said, this scout tent is way too heavy. My car camping tent is 5 pounds and the tarp I use most often is measured in ounces. Nessmuk would have used the materials available to him. I do too.
Congrats on the upcoming talks for the cable program. It will be nice to see you expand your audience. Great tarp/tent too because it offers a lot of options.
Thanks dave for saying the thing about common man and saving up to only buy something once I am 14 and saved up by doing chores and things like that to buy the BHK gns knife and have not bought another knife since and I think people have to think about buying gear more like you said to with common sense
Thanks Dave! Your a hardcore Dude!!..Looking forward to the book..and the TV. I support you and what your doing and sharing it to the world.Hope you keep it up. We all look foward to it!
3 to 4 hundred dollars is not unreasonable. I love the improvements. I think it is about as perfect as it can be now. Thanks for making this video Dave. And I will absolutely watch every episode of your TV show that comes out. I hope they don't make you hide your faith or your cross necklace and make you keep quiet about God as you may feel free to speak of Him, like they they tried to do to our Duck Buds down south. I support you 100 percent of the way. God Bless you always, Brother.
Dave, that tent is just outstanding from what I can see! Looks like I'll be saving up. One suggestion though, is to have internal tie points, to attach say a reflective tarp liner or other gear on the inside of the tent, to help keep in the warmth on really cold nights.
Wow I think it's pretty sad there's so many people criticizing Dave when the things he teaches you could potentially save your life. it's pretty sad there's so many fools in this world if you don't like the prices or his videos don't watch them or don't buy them it's your loss. As for me, I'm very grateful for all the free knowledge thank you Dave.
I just received the TentSmiths 8x8 Oilskin tarp this last week and went out last night with it. I love it! Now I think that maybe I should have waited for this Tent/Tarp to be released.
The final version of the oil tarp looks great Dave. A little out of my price range. Maybe Peter can design a "lite" version of the tarp design with different thread cotton and at half the price. Was wondering when you'd be back on television...glad to hear that it's soon. I know you'll keep us posted. Much success with that...you deserve it!
Looks like a great product at a reasonable price by and awesome company. Thanks for sharing. If you get the chance, I would love to see a video of it going up and coming back down. Thanks again for sharing and for all you do.
Dave I'd recommend that you have an inward facing flap around the bottom with loops on it so you can peg it down or possibly have another piece of oilcloth with toggles on it so you'd then be able to make it more versatile by having a tarp on the bottom.Because I'm in australia and I love that tent but one of my concerns is wildlife sneaking into the tent in the middle of the night. Thanks Dave great video love the tent but i think the tent would become better if you considered my ideas .
Great work, Dave and friends. The final result is very similar to the old fashioned Spanish Marine shelter tent.we used to dig a litle trench all around and close to the tarp flaps in order to drain the water in case of heavy rain.just an advice. "Since 1537 braves by land and sea"
Thanks for this. It would be my ideal campout shelter, perfect size. Thank you. I've been using oilskin coats, jackets and vests for years and love them.
hey Dave sweet tarp tent, I have a very similar one from NWwoodsman, but the oilcloth is top notch. Also great to hear ur gonna have a new show coming out based on your videos. Most shows out there are not worth watching, looking forward to it
I like it, pricing seems fair, I have bought other things from them and they do great work. the final product is great along with your ideas of the carry bag.
hey dave looks great man! anyway you could do another video showing other configurations? that thing looks pretty big would love to see what it's capable of. lookin forward to awesome things from ya brother have a good night
Beautiful looking kit. Glad to see the incorporation of your viewer's suggestions as well. That thing looks monstrously big too. I'd imagine you could get 2 people plus gear in there without even having to get "military-hooch close." Looks like I need to start saving my pennies!
I'll place my order for one as soon as Peter has the green light from Dave. The price is about right for something of this size and of high quality. I cant wait to get mine. I plan on using the heck out of it. Stephen, Ohio

Great tarp. Folks, you get what you pay for. Glad you're working on a TV show. Your skills and delivery should be made available to a larger audience. Perhaps it will educate the masses to stop being so block headed.
I might actually buy this tarp. I agree with the previous posting, I went to the tent smith's site and you really need to have your own link on that site. Since there is no search engine, it might get stuck under a link that's hard to find. You've come a long way Dave! I'm glad to hear you might be back on TV. I follow you religiously and you've overcome a lot. Keep up the good work! :)
I am happy you are getting a tv program because I use to love watching you on duel survival an stuff, I am also happy that you have more time for more videos, PEACE BROTHER!
Question: If the wind was kicking and you didn't want snow blowing in from underneath, would it be ok to seal up the bottom edges from the outside by pushing deeper snow up against it? Would that hurt the fabric to be left that way for a day or two?
Hey Dave, when Peter does post this option, please have him do so with a picture if at all possible. Thanks man. Love what youre doing and kudos on the show.
I think that this tarp tent would be a great investment as with all of the products that you give your personal "Go Ahead" on. I would like to see a little more of the versatility of this tarp tent; as you mentioned in the video (i.e. other configurations like the 5 minute shelter). Also, you mentioned this to be a four season style tarp but would you say this is a practical solution for short term treks or is it more for the long hauls?
Dave if you put to loops for handles on the bag you could use it for carrying firewood back to camp too. when you first picked it up that's what i thought it was.
Dave you make a simple lean-to open on 3 sides, but here in the north west it rains a lot so we make a lean-to but only anchored in the middle. We then fold the front corners down to the ground. this makes a structure enclosed on 3 of 4 sides. give it a try.
Ok, older video, but is oil cloth flammable? I like this open bottom, and simple design. Modern tents give me claustrophobia - if a bad person showed up, the only out might be to cut the fabric. Thanks.
Looks heavy-duty stuff - I really like it. I also love how you are looking into all aditional use of things like with that tent bag - very smart brother! Greetings from Mexico.
No doubt this is quality tarp but it just too heavy, to bulky and to costly for me to consider carrying it into the western back country, unless I was using horses, but I am not.
Dave, what happened to the light-weight oil cloth material that the prototype was made out of? That setup was only 2.5 lbs and compacted down way more than the 5-6 lb heavier version thats only 1x1 bigger? Plus the lighter weight material was going to cut the cost in half? Just curious, the lighter weight oilcloth was the main selling point for most of us i think based on your original prototype vid. Thanks for all you do.
Thumbs up on the tarp tent concept. It seems a great idea for cold weather environments but not necessarily for spring/summer/autumn where you may only need a rain & wind cover. Could you possibly get someone else to make it out of silnylon? I'm sure the weight would get down to 3lbs and possibly below $200. Good news on the TV show. I look forward to watching it.

Grats on the new show Dave, can't wait to watch it.
FINALLY! I cannot wait to get one. I like the size increase. For all those that say " it is too big, it's too small", custom build one for yourselves!
Very nice tent setup Dave. Have missed seeing you on Cable and hope your new show works out great!

Too much for me… but I've ordered a 7x7 oilskin fro Tentsmith that I think will serve me for many years! Thanks Dave for your inspirational videos!
Congrats on the upcoming talks for the cable program. It will be nice to see you expand your audience. Great tarp/tent too because it offers a lot of options.
Reasonable price with expansive utility. Can't wait to get mine!
Hurrah! Going to actually be something on TV worth watching soon.
Thanks dave for saying the thing about common man and saving up to only buy something once I am 14 and saved up by doing chores and things like that to buy the BHK gns knife and have not bought another knife since and I think people have to think about buying gear more like you said to with common sense

Waiting for the word go! I've been anticipating and keeping up with this tarp tent, so ready to own one and give it a 3 day trial run.
congrats on the tv gig. I hope it's a channel I get on cable cause I plan on watching!
Best news I hered all day! Lookin forward to the TV deal! Nice Tent!
Thanks for this. It would be my ideal campout shelter, perfect size. Thank you. I've been using oilskin coats, jackets and vests for years and love them.
Thank you, Dave, for clarifying what you mean when you say, "common man" . Also, I wish you much luck with your new television show.
amazing times dave! i'm glad you got the t.v. deal that you wanted and i look forward to that as well as your book. thanks brother.
That's a great looking tarp/tent! It looks like it's roomy enough that you could maybe even put a small cot in there if you wanted to. I like that.
Glad to hear about the book and tv show...im excited for those!!
hey Dave sweet tarp tent, I have a very similar one from NWwoodsman, but the oilcloth is top notch. Also great to hear ur gonna have a new show coming out based on your videos. Most shows out there are not worth watching, looking forward to it
Did you consider staggering the toggles so the inside toggles are in the middle of the outside?
Your tv show will be a hit!
I like it, pricing seems fair, I have bought other things from them and they do great work. the final product is great along with your ideas of the carry bag.
Excellent. the changes you mentioned to the sack of this tarp should certainly be done.
Tarp looks great and top quality , good luck with your tv programme hope it all goes well .
hey dave looks great man! anyway you could do another video showing other configurations? that thing looks pretty big would love to see what it's capable of. lookin forward to awesome things from ya brother have a good night
Excellent trap system. Any special or routine maintenance required for the material to extend its life?
Beautiful looking kit. Glad to see the incorporation of your viewer's suggestions as well.
That thing looks monstrously big too. I'd imagine you could get 2 people plus gear in there without even having to get "military-hooch close."
Looks like I need to start saving my pennies!
Outstanding! I will be looking to get one of those. Very nice design.
American-made = Americans working.
Worth the price,
I look forward to your new Television show. I hope it has some survival in it like your old show.
I'll place my order for one as soon as Peter has the green light from Dave. The price is about right for something of this size and of high quality. I cant wait to get mine. I plan on using the heck out of it. Stephen, Ohio
Thanks Dave! I will be ordering one, the price point is vary fair and common man
I have a French bell wedge tent from tentsmiths ,used it for years and still no signs of wearing out yet . their tents are worth every penny you spend, when this one comes out I am going to get one without hesitation
Awesome design and I like the improvements alot. We've priced out canvas etc to make our own version for backpacking etc and really to save the time of making it ourselves the price is half decent. Having a partner that is an artist and seamstress we know the value of good hand made craftsmanship, which alone is worth paying for.
I've seen critiques about "common man" being having changed etc...people need to RELAX, the videos are still up on you-tube if you want to learn the cheap low cost methods.I for one love having the option of high quality handmade and LOCAL instead of being made in China or Taiwan and Im broke ass myself. But its like Dave has said...its a trade-off between necessity and what you can afford. paying 400$ one time in a lifetime instead of 20$ 20 times etc.
Also if you look up the TentSmiths site they do custom fittings, so if you want a smaller foot print etc...they'll do it as they do with all of their product..but of course that means you'd have to READ everything and pay attention to the videos instead of asking questions that have already been answered for you.
Great idea. I'd love to see the same design in the 100 dollar range. You could make a mint.
Great tarp. Folks, you get what you pay for. Glad you're working on a TV show. Your skills and delivery should be made available to a larger audience. Perhaps it will educate the masses to stop being so block headed.
Great looking tarp...Gotta have me one of these if they are still available1
Good point Dave. Sometimes the cheapest thing to buy is the thing that is made well enough that you never have to buy it again.
It turned out very nice Dave ,Cool
I want one
Where do i buy this at this is by far the best tent i have seen
That TV show sounds great. I remember back in the 90's when Ron Hood had a show on Friday night on a satellite channel. I never missed it.
the tv things sounds good but i hope u dont stop the YT thingy...plz don´t
Can't wait for your new show.
reminds me of the bot scout overnighter tent probly a lot lighter nope about the same weight its a great idea can you configure it as a bakers tent ?
Thanks Dave, I'm saving up some cash and buying me one of those Pathfinder Scout Tarps.
Happy your going back to TV
I would love to see this setup as a tarp. Do you have a video about that?
loving the old/ new title sequence!
Dave if you put to loops for handles on the bag you could use it for carrying firewood back to camp too. when you first picked it up that's what i thought it was.

i wish you could coin the term poor-man.instead of common-man. because i'm a poor man.
Love the tent/tarp. Cant wait for your new show. Why did you cut your 12 gauge down?
No doubt this is quality tarp but it just too heavy, to bulky and to costly for me to consider carrying it into the western back country, unless I was using horses, but I am not.
Excellent quality additions to a quality piece of equipment. I'll be ordering one.
Home run on the tarp/tent.
Congrates... on your new Broadcast Project... I think... I just hope it won't cut down on your UA-cam posts...
Good luck brother...
Hell yea man looking forward to the new show!
i agree what happen to the common man approach from your earlier videos?
This looks great! Being 6'4" I am glad it was made larger!
looks good bud! nice job
