Luffy is brutally honest, care free, strong, loyal, smarter than he lets on (usually in battle), always thinks about food and being King of the Pirates.
He has no sense of direction and doesn't really care how strong anybody is, he's willing to die in search of the One Piece.
He's normally very simple and direct in his approach too.

Don't worry, Loony Toons is a very apt descriptor. There's no negative connotation on either side to call One Piece similar to LT. But you did wonder if it can get deep - yes.
The previous pirate king found the One Piece, which is a legendary treasure that sent pirates to the seas.
Oh, don't worry, the Live Action does fit the vibe, but so does the start. It's that kind of flexible.

(it was not a goose but a swan. Ahaha~)
Also you're kinda right, there're a lot of political intrigues, racial disputes, and so on. It's just opens up slowly. Every of your question is gonna be answered eventually (by the end of episode 65 for sure), and there the new questions will rise, and you'll get your answers to them as well. There're some questions that still left without answers even after 1000 episides, but we know those will be answered eventually too. So we're just waiting and enjoying the show.

It’s such a fun show and the world building expands along with understanding of the characters’ true pasts and proverbial baggage and how all of it goes with their character development where dialogue will completely recontextualise events from 900 chapters before into something completely different… I definitely recommend starting with this through episode 4 or 5 cause that’s the intro to koby/saving koby meeting important characters story arc that’s just a small intro to a bunch of things which each set of mini story arcs reveal about the characters… but you’re only able to assume or guess things til it shocks you with short dialogue and maybe a small flashback…
But definitely worth watching the earlier arcs in chunks… later you kinda Need bigger chunks of it… but episode one isn’t even where the manga starts… they moved some things for the sake of flow or something but it works this way
Enjoy the ride man… someone in a one piece tuber discussion server dropped link to your vid with positive reviews and honestly I can Tell already you’re gonna get what you desire and more from the impression you’ve given… Welcome aboard man! Its a helluva ride… The world govt in the story is Almost as bad as the Real Life World Government which probably inspires much of the narrative… but don’t speculate that heavy til way later when you live off wild theories hehe some come true but some are completely different than most normal speculations… Oda has a lot of fun with the audience’s expectations and beliefs and you really see more looking back the more you know from the story… Can’t recommend reading the manga casually enough cause you’ll probably burn through it quick! It’s hard to stop in some places and you always know at some points it’s going to be “peak fiction” as I frequently hear exclaimed around… well most chapters past year hehe
A lot of your initial thoughts will seem funny later on cause of some things you thought that are like a way lighter vanilla version of what Oda has coming over the next few hundred chapters or so… even in east blue a lot of important stuff gets done that parallels elements of things later in ways no one realises til it’s pointed out… So much happens so quickly though the live action has chopped the arc down to a few hours somehow and I don’t know how well it’ll sell the story but It probably will get people Really enjoying the anime or manga as a result…
Such a fun ride the start of the story… which I can’t even use the appropriate words to characterise the Grandeur of it because of Spoilers and so on hehe but you don’t need to know that stuff for a while I’d imagine hehehe
Really have fun with this story man! It’s a battle comedy that gets way more serious and dramatic while the humour always carries on as the narrative evolves with the understanding of the world…
I really doubt you’d be disappointed from what you already seem to think so Just keep Vivian with the memorable soundtrack yeah?! : D

Nerdy gets it! I'm currently in the middle of the manga and I haven't properly seen the anime outside of a couple of episodes, but this is a great first episode to set the tone of what One Piece can be like some of the time. It's an especially great introduction to Luffy, Coby, and Nami.

You know what I like about the one piece anime The first half of the grand line and predate the red line as well Is when the story covers character development as in maturing them Into who they are going to be, Physically mentally emotionally overall Maturing them. Is in the second half of the grand line a.k.a. The new world That is when It is more about refining all those pre-existing qualities And there technical Techniques and physical techniques To a Higher plane Of understanding and capability

The thing about One Piece is that it is absurdist fiction. Things can happen in this world that aren't confined to reality. Oda does this really well, where it's believably unbelievable.

Some watch tips if you decide to continue:
    1. Definitely find a watch guide (you can google it and use one of the first links) so you know which episodes are fillers and are therefore skippable. The general consensus among One Piece anime fans is that only one filler arc (G8) is worth watching. IMO most One Piece fillers are not up to the par of the canon episodes but are generally okay, but do give yourself that option.
    2. If 1000+ episodes feel daunting, episode 44 (end of Arlong Park) is generally a good point to gauge whether the show is worth watching in its entirety for someone. This is equivalent to a 22-episode season of a show on network TV in watch time. Though, keep in mind that One Piece will consistently improve as a story way beyond that point and you don't really get a true look into the full scope of the world until the late-200s episodes.
    3. Don't read the title cards. Sometimes they can spoil the entire episode.
    4. Be very careful about spoilers in general! Try not looking things up. Be careful of your comment section; there are some jerks in the fandom who for some reason feel the need to ruin reactors' fun.
Welcome aboard and hope you enjoy yourself!

The hooking point is Arlong park arc, if you can stick it out to the end of that arc you'll want to watch more and see what's going to happen.

One piece means so much to me and I’m happy to see so many people react to it and I’m here for it. The first episode is very different from the first chapter of the manga which is much better but still I like it a lot! It is one of the greatest stories that I have ever read/watched/heard. And really glad you feel like going even if the not for the views!
Will watch the next ep of your reactions though!

First of all, welcome to the One Piece crew! Hope you enjoy the cruise.
One Piece has an excellent sense of balance between silly nonsense and deep moments/topics. You'll see glimpses of that in the next few story arcs, but it'll be one specific arc (which the live action's first season will climax with) where you'll see that balance in full. Its usually at that point where people go All-In on the series.

Yahoo! Another One Piece episode 1 reaction! Best way to describe OP is as Looney Tunes Shonen. Oda was heavily inspired by western slapstick cartoons. You picked it up immediately! So yeah, audio direction and background music is important.
But beyond that, One Piece is TRULY about personal freedom and following your dreams!
Edit: and yes, Coby becomes great. And also, you have NO IDEA how gay some of these pirates will get!

Yo nerdy, look up a filler list for one piece. Theres some arcs you could watch like G8 but theres so much that it really saves so much time in the long run if you skip it. It also helps you not feel lost later when stuff you think is cannon is never seen again

Another Nakama I can't wait to see how far you go, one piece is an amazing ride to go on that you won't regret investing the time in. The best advice any One Piece fan can give to someone new starting the show is just go until episode 45 to decide if your in for the long haul or not but trust me it's worth it This whole 1,000 plus episode show has been created by one guy Echiro Oda who the fans lovingly call GOda for his amazing writing abilities

Super glad you enjoyed this one - I can understand where you're coming from with FMA's contrast between exaggerated expressions for comedy and serious dark moments (though it works for me), all I'll say it that I think OP's serious moments (when they come) might work better for you because they stay in that exaggerated style and apply it to dramatic moments, rather than whiplashing between two vastly contrasting styles. We'll see though.
