- American soprano, Jessye Norman has been awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society Gold Medal - one of classical music’s highest honours - in the year she celebrates 50 years in the profession.
She was presented with the RPS Gold Medal in New York by Clive Gillinson, Executive and Artistic Director of Carnegie Hall. In awarding the Gold Medal, the RPS said:
"Jessye Norman is a towering artist: an icon in the operatic world who has raised the bar of the possibilities of the human voice. Her rich lyric voice - distinctive, sumptuous, spine-tingling, joyful and passionate - and her sheer versatility set her in a category of her own."

The RPS Gold Medal was initiated in 1870 to commemorate the centenary of Beethoven's birth and bears the effigy of Beethoven. It is the Society's highest honour and is awarded internationally for the most outstanding musicianship. Read more about the Gold Medal here: bit.ly/2K0Pe7Z

For me, Jessye Norman is an ideal in every sense of the word. The most beautiful, the most brilliant, the only singer I listen to endlessly. Compared to her, all modern singers are so small! I adore Jesse and hate the time that makes great musicians give up the stage.
I said years ago, I am convinced Jessye Norman is God. Such dignity and majesty she exudes. A truly awesome soul.

She was a great artist, God be thanked. Psalm 107: 1: " O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever." Still, many regard her as a god.

It is a true sign of being raised poorly and having bad parenting when one insults someone who has passed-on. I'm also 100% sure that if she were white, you would never accuse her of speaking with a fake accent. Yes, Harry, Black people are also allowed to speak with elegance and class.

Ms Norman studied throughout the United States and Europe and Great Britain in her ongoing quest to infuse into herself the very ‘being’ of the characters and roles of the extraordinary operas which she so perfectly performed. She mastered five languages and conversed easily with world monarchs and diplomats as easily and respectfully as with the taxi drivers who were thrilled to escort Ms Norman. Fake accent? Not at all, Ms Norman genuine. One more thing Harry, mind your manners, dear. Lack of breeding shows.
