  • Former Pakistan diplomat and journalist Husain Haqqani on Monday said the people of India and Pakistan must realise the common threads between them and not hold America responsible for the animosity between the two neighbours in the subcontinent.
    Husain Haqqani spoke in length about the India-Pakistan ties at the LFL session.

      @msc14111990 no they don't. India is a great nation that way. I am a Bengali Hindu Choudhury with roots in Bangladesh married to a Himachali Brahmin - born in Kolkata, raised in Chennai, stayed in Delhi and living in Madhya Pradesh for many years now. I have travelled far and wide in India and never ever have I felt that I am a foreigner, common language or otherwise. Everywhere we have been welcomed with open arms and made to feel a part of their home .
      This is the beauty of our nation.

      The answer with due respect lies in the 1971 and separation of Bangla desh. The pre 1971 Pakistan had a 15% population of non Muslims and most of these almost 10 to 12% were there in east Pakistan. They are now Bangadeshi citizens (check the muslim and non muslim population percentage there. ) And present day Pakistan still has 4-5% non muslims.

      My late father was an Army officer in Pakistan Army, he had two best Hindu friends Mr. Rajal Das who was a civil Judge and Mr. P Amar Das who was a barrister in Hyderabad Sindh Pakistan in the 1980s. They with their families used to visit us and we used to visit them. We only lost contact after my parent's death. I know most of their relatives moved to India. Uncle Amar's sons still in Hyderabad and are doctors. I must admit that commonly minorities are not treated very well but it is not all bleak, many minority people are living very good lives in Pakistan. There are Army officers, Police officers, doctors, barristers, judges. It is mostly in remote villages where there are Landlords who treat all their haris (people working on their lands) bad, irrespective of their religion. Muslim workers get the same treatment as Hindus. However, Hindus do have a choice to move to India but Muslims keep suffering at the hands of their Muslim 'brethern' landlord. It is a shame that the Government does nothing about it, as these landlords are very powerful in Government.

    Its lame to blame Pakistan for our lack of vision to solve our problems. The rise of pseudo-secular votebank politics by the Left and Congress has created a virtual Pakistan within our own borders. The Muslims who chose to stay here would not have done so if they did not believe in universal secular framework of governance under common laws. So the sanction to practise Sharia laws and provocative religious mores antithetical to religious harmony has shown the seeds of communal disharmony ... fundamentalists across the border has exploited this division to portray muslims of India as victims to feed and fuel the Kashmir cause. I guess Progressive,Secular,just and united India is the perfect solution to all the issues between Pakistan and us therefore its entirely in hands to find it.

    • @pradhan2008
      @pradhan2008 5 років тому

      @Bramha's Astra Prima facie the 98% franchise defy common sense since only a fraction of it migrated ,so apparently the vote was non-representative or rigged.Furthermore given the numerous communal riots that ensued after partition would have compelled most of them to flee despite the logistical challenges on the ground. So the creation of a Indian Muslim identity is a betrayal of the secular spirit of them in India which they tried to escape after partition by not going to Pakistan.

    It’s sad to see the trauma that The British empire wrought on the people of this continent. Over a million people died when the country was divided. Having sown the seeds of division the British and other western powers have ensured that the divided countries remain enemies by interfering and supporting dissent on both sides. People need to wake up and realize that they are one people and that by cooperating with each other they can strengthen themselves economically and securely. Don’t let other people divide you and weaken your position.)

    I respect haqqani and agree to most of his views, but won't agree that Indian subcontinent is least integrated. India-Nepal-Bhutan are perfectly integrated with practically open Borders and easy flow of trade and people. With certain restrictions we can consider Bangladesh in this list as well. Only problem is with Pakistan and China. As for India is concerned, till this year Pakistan was declared the most favourable nation by India in terms of Trade. In spite of Bullying attitude of China, India has opened up its market for China. Ironically, the same day when China Blocked move in UN against Indian interest, the very same day Indians purchased Chinese phones en masse (13 th March 2019 was Xiaomi Redmi note 7 Pro sale on Flipkart; and the same day China blocked anti terror move in UN). How much more the world expects from India. Saying India has equal share of the blame for hostile Indo-Pak relations is just an attempt to have a balancing talk; without substance. India is practically blame-free in the Indo-Pak Hostility. And India has done a lot, especially considering it is a developing economy, for the economical integration of South-East Asia.

Various Journalist who have previously worked at Hindu has complained about newspaper dictation to follow the newspapers line of ideology in their reporting and articles. But new news agencies from India like wion in English and lallantop in hindi are refreshing as their reporting is more focused on facts and information and seldom they try to reach biased conclusions and let readers decide for themselves.

    Haqqani calls Imran Khan: not a particularly bright person despite him having an Oxford education. I wonder what his views on Modi are: A person who has dubious educational qualifications and is widely believed to have risen up the political ranks due to his long-standing connections to the fascist RSS. He says the Army rigged the elections to bring IK into power but neither presents any proof of this accusation nor does he say anything about the fact that Khan had the popular mandate in Pakistan and the fact that people were visibly miffed at PML(N)'s governance of the last 5 years.

The only common emotion of Haterate of each other because Pakistan has been an irritant for India so how can they be friends. For the last 70 years India evolved into a Soft Power so was dictated by the Soviet Union in 1965, the USA in 1971 & Kargil . Since then India has moved to become less dependent to hear these Major Power to broker mediation. India is less forgiving now than in the past since nothing was achieved in the past.Dilpomacy is left hand with a velvet and a strong stick on the right hand. Pakistan today is at its Weakest stage because of the use of Lakshar since 1948 and the Civilised World asking for its elimination by the Pakistan Army. Excellent Presentation by Hussain Haqquni. Clearly they didn't adhered to the idea of secularism and therefore destined to be doomed sooner or later. Its per capita GDP keeps going downward, has already been overtaken several times by military power and now is on the brink of bankruptcy. Its a country on the downhill which will implode anytime and therefore we just need to make sure the harms from across the border doesn't impact us and our country. A large portion of which always end up in offshore accounts of such people as himself. He is only interested in selling his book of ideologies that pleases the politicians of UK and USA and India. He has no love for the people of Pakistan. Pakistan's poor are pious hard working population that never gets an opportunity to break the poverty line because of people like Mr. Haqqani, Mr. Zardari and Mr. Shareef. Imran Khan so far is the only leader who has rebuffed the idea of loans from IMF and has target elimination of Poverty thrugh massive investment for the poor as his prime target. Great answer by the ambassador who said in the the end that (52:26) " the united states by arming the Pakistani military and providing it with resources has probably "heightened" its own instincts which were probably there". This is a great answer and that I have always thought about because to me, Pakistan suffers from the same instincts against India (that India will attack it, that India is not interested but only as a retaliatory action or defensive action) as the Americans have against the Russia (fearful that Russia will attack the US- which will probably never happen). So it would not be unreasonable to believe that the Americans have instigated fear in the minds of the Pakistanis against India.

    Haqqani generally speaks logically, but not here. He says we cant keep discussing why a joint family member moved out. Well, Pak is NOT a "joint family member", since it never existed, it was created by cutting the parents body, same goes for Bangladesh. Wait and you will see other creations of Khyber, Sindh and Gilgit cutting themselves out of the body. The only "joint family member" in the right sense is Balochistan that was a separate entity that existed before the word Pakistan was even known. You will see this "joint family member" moving out, then you should practice what you preach and dont discuss why a joint family member moved out.
    Indians for 70 years have stayed silent on our massacre by Pakistan, not anymore. Always a time comes when victims have had enough and then they rise to protect themselves and attack the attackers. This is why today you will hear Indians saying why can't Pak mind its own business and stay within its territory. If it keeps entering India and murdering us for 7 decades, then the obvious question will be - why can't Pak stop existing. Surprised at your biased views. You ignore mentioning Gazva-e-Hind, bleed India with a 1000 cuts foreign policy towards India. Seems like you werent always objective and it was a sham that is now melting away.

      India also never existed as a formal state with proper boundaries before the Britishers occupied it and turned it colonial British-India. Pakistani region has been a frontier region administered by British-India as a buffer between empires. Indians inherited "India" what was actually established by a foreign occupier, and has no contribution from the indigenous population of the sub-continent.

OR are you a millennial Pakistani who get rebuffed for incorrect historical facts? "Indika" was used by ancient Greeks, (centuries before Islam was invented), later inherited by Brits, heard of Megasthenes? Or do Pak schools start their history from 1947? Afghan was used as buffer. Educate yourself on the rest of it.

    • @nasser-ist
      @nasser-ist 5 років тому

      @@deepasinghal4729 I am neither a millennial nor educated in Pakistan, so let's get those of your assumptions out of the way. I know you Indians get irked when presented with facts.
      First of all the ancient Greeks used the word "Hindu" or "Indu" which was derived from the word "Sindhu", a local name for river Indus. Anyone living beyond river Indus, meaning east of it was referred to as "Hindu". Before that your religion and region didn't even have a formal name, so let us get that fact out of the way too. Greeks invented a vocabulary for your statue worshiping cult and started calling you Hindus. Historically foreign invaders have been defining "India" as they saw fit, ending with the Britishers.
      Megasthenes, yet another foreigner (Greek) historian who described the land from east of Indus and just the northern parts of what is known as India today as "Indica". His chronicles and accounts in the form of a book have long been lost, so a lot of it is left to concocted and convenient imagination of the contemporary historians.
      Dionysus, another foreigner (Greek), invaded east of Indus and ruled it for half a century, taught the locals the art of farming and worshiping and built cities, hence introducing civilization to the subcontinent east of the Indus River what is know as "India" today.
      Same goes for the Turkic and Central Asian Mongol Muslim invaders and occupiers whom you refer to as "Mughals" and proudly display their Islamic architecture like Taj Mahal and many others as the jewels of Indian tourism and your identity. Most of what the Indians take pride in is all imported anyway.
      And yes, Afghanistan was the buffer between British-Indian Empire and the Russian Empire, and the regions that belong to Pakistan were what the Britishers referred to as "frontiers" of their British-India and was only administered by the political agents representing the British-Indian colony with the exception of Punjab. There is a reason why Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was till recently called the North West Frontier Province and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) had political agents, again which recently merged with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
      Lots of empires have come and gone and have transformed the subcontinent region, but never there was a state called "India" historically speaking and with defined boundaries. The last empire that occupied the region drew boundaries to administer its areas and frontiers and that was what you Indians started to lay territorial claim on after they left. Yet another imported influence that you still suffer from. So please do not teach others history or assume things.
