Husain Haqqani: Pakistan and the US: An Alliance of Misunderstandings

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 7 лис 2013
  • Some call the 65 year-old relationship between Pakistan and the US a strategic alliance. For Pakistan, the US has been a source of much needed aid and military supply. For the US, Pakistan has been a stabilizing force in a largely unstable region. Today, Pakistan is seen in the US as a hotbed of terrorist activity and the US is seen in Pakistan as a constant source of humiliation. Former Pakistani ambassador to the US, Husain Haqqani, blames these deteriorating views on a relationship between these two countries that has always been based on mutual incomprehension and the belief that one can play the other. Drawing on his experience with his homeland and his time in the US as an ambassador and a professor, Haqqani will lay out his views on the US-Pakistani relationship and why the two just can't seem to understand each other.
Husain Haqqani is the Director for South and Central Asia at the Hudson Institute.

I am Pakistani activist and I wish that my fellow Pakistani should listen it very carefully this massages. We are should come out to say that " What are our national Interests". Our National interests are each institute should work as per their own areas. We should again work on policy change and need strong civilian government. Pakistan should respects sovereignty of all his neighbors countries. We should send massage to world that, we are nothing to do with terrorism, we are not enemy of India and we are should not interfere in other countries. Lets think about our own-self, own nations and development. So we should look forward and make our example is South Korea. We should not think about Saudi is our example or Iran. Pakistani need to think very differently for our nation. Hope things will change and as nation we are not supporting terrorism and these terrorists are enemy world and enemy of our nation. Lets change Pakistan with Education, peace, rule of law and development.

You seem to be a moderate person and will be good if most think this way and improve education, healthcare, employment. So can India do same if both focus less on military which can happen if there is less skirmishes.
I heard Deobandi sect is taking over 25-30% Pakistan who are highly conservative and Sufi sect is lowering.

A beautiful and well structured debate. From what I understand is that the psychology of the Pakistani public has been made to belief conspiracy theories through disinformation for vested interests. Since media plays a vital role and as Mr Haqqani says that public can be perceptive to rational and simple debates, shouldn't the US start such rational debates on Pakistani networks and save the institution rather than pushing billions which is proving counter productive ?

Systematic rape was one of the chief weapons of the atrocity campaign. Any-where from 200,000 to 400,000 women were raped. Susan Brownmiller (1975), who published one of the earliest analyses of the event in her pioneering work on the politics of sexual violence, reported the following: “Rape in Bangladesh had hardly been restricted to beauty. Girls of eight and grandmothers of seventy-fi ve had been sexually assaulted during the nine-month repression. Pakistani soldiers had not only violated Bengali women on the spot; they abducted tens of hundreds and held them by force in their military barracks for nightly use. The women were kept naked to prevent their escape” (p. 82)." (Plight and Fate of Women During and Following, Routledge, Page 49)

Re7:00, it wasn't about poverty or sharing borders, the reason why India was non aligned! It was because democracy and leftist ideologies were not seen in India as necessarily on war footings, the same way India and Hinduism do not see a contradiction with polytheism in spite of comprehending every level of idea of a supreme Divine. So India chose a democracy with large public sector at beginning of nation building for home, and non alignment with friendship offered to everyone but refusal to accept bondage to anyone on world stage. Only change since is larger private sector compared to initial years.

Some of what Haqqani has said is true but we have to know that when he says US gave such and such to India and such and such to Pakistan when they begged the US, we got to remember US doesn't give such and such without strings attached as Haqqani portrays the US to be that angel of a country who just wants to help other countries for the sake of humanity. The US or any big power whenever helping smaller or weaker countries first look at their interest and then use their budget to FIRSTLY serve their own interests and agendas , like for example what they want in Asia, and US presence there against countries like China and Russia with whom they are playing the big game. So if a country or region doesn't or cant play a role which would help the US in its agenda or interest then the US wouldn't give a ear , forget about helping , example KASHMIR, the Kashmiris might appeal to the US and UN millions of times , and knowing well that they are oppressed this Angel US wont come, or another case is Palestine where US has been the criminal to equip israel with Terrorizing weapons of mass destruction, which was illegal, either not to equip any or equip both, or if equipping only one then Palestianians deserved that as it was their country and israelis only settled there in 1948. I guess Haqqani is getting good money in portraying Pakistan as bad. Yes Pakistan might have made some mistakes on its journey since its birth, but then who hasn't made mistakes. Does the US allow its ex diplomats to go out and share all internal government information with the world, the answer is NO.

After conquering that city and his usual trademark brutality , Genghis killed the locals also. When they protested as they had helped Genghis , he gave them a famous reply

Nothing will change as long as the military is in power in Pakistan. $40 billion was doled out to the Pakistanis since 1947 by the US, most of which went into the coffers of the military crooks. They need this confrontation with India to continue as it is a golden goose that has made many generals and prime ministers wealthy. Nehru gave up PoK, Chittagong Hill Tracts and Khulna, the latter two being overwhelmingly non-Muslim majority as an appeasement to the Pakistanis but his foolishness bore fruit in the subsequent decades.

#1 There's no need to hide behind a pseudo name - not even on UA-cam especially on a topic like this.
#2 The biggest changes in nations across the globe have come from within - from people having the courage to criticize their own. "One cannot change what one is not aware of" is I think what Amb Haqqani says in his speech.
#3 We are all aware of the fate of those who do have the courage to stand up to the powers that be within Pakistan. There are many brave journalists, activists, authors, academics who unfortunately will never be heard from again.
#4 If you're not willing to look in the mirror yourself, somebody has to hold it in front of you. What you're doing has consequences, not only for the people in your own country, but for citizens of other countries. And with or without Amb Haqqani, if Pakistan itself is not willing or unable to stop the madness emanating from within, somebody else will come in and do it for you.

Aristotle said that a country makes an Army when it does not trust other countries to protect itself.
Armies and intelligence angencies are the product of mistrust between nations or more precisely humans.
This mistrust could be for any reason.
But the primary responsiblity of an army or intelligency aganecy is not to trust anyone and protect the country at any cost.
I do not understand why this Haqqani is so pissed off with Pakistani Army. All it does is try to protect Pakistan within its limited resources. USA during cold war used to fly planes 24/7 with nuclear weapons to bomb russia. What did CIA not do to protect USA?
This is pakistan army's job to keep India and Afghanistan on their toes which it does and that pisses off Haqqani and his friends. These two countries have been hostile to Pakistan in the past. Pakistan has so many big problems with these countries that they can not be trusted. But yet again Haqqani is persisted and presenting books to reveal the true identity of Pakistan army and ISI to the world. He needs to understand that something that comes out of "mistrust "can not be good.
Let's say you are married to a woman that you do not trust. What do you think your kids will become when they grow up? They will be the result of all the mistrust between their parents.
What does he want? This iodiot wants an Army and intelligence agency to become the symbol of honesty, mercy and truthfullness. Well, good luck with that! Or does he want the Pakistan army to be totally eliminated and leave pakistanis on the mercy of other nations.
This idiot Haqqani is just trying to take revenge on some personal thing or he works for the enemies of Pakistan or he wants to be in the media or he is just simply a jackass.
