Kirk was signed to bring them to the next level. They had huge areas of needs on the defense that could have helped elevate the team. This pick makes zero sense.
The reason it makes sense: Next years QB class is very weak. With Kirk, ATL will not be picking high enough for a top QB prospect again in the next few years. Kirk has 2 years in his deal. This was their only chance to get a QB of the future and MPJ was one of their top players in the draft
Atlanta, Chicago, Packers was fighting for that Final Wild Card to end the season. All 3 teams will likely be better, but fighting for those same spots. Jmo
Falcons fan here. Not a fan of the draft but I will say we really needed IDL help and if Ruke could learn from anyone it’d be Grady. If you notice developmental players are always our Targets on day 2. Thinking of guys like Bergeron, Troy Anderson, Deangelo Malone, AK, Mayfield we usually do take some off the wall athletes on day 2 under TF. Really hope this class works out but coping extremely hard lol
Finally i see some love for the Panthers draft, i really thought we killed it and people are saying we reached on Legette and Brooks and they are dead wrong imo. Bell cow do it all back we got in the second and the perfect receiver for our scheme whos biggest ? Is a late breakout? With the shit hes been through in life? Big +++ for Panthers. Really i have bigger ? For Wallace and Barrett. Wallace has athletic positives, but instinctual ? But also has some random stats where youre like "wait thats pretty good" (i think PFF said hes let up super low number of TDs on coverage plays, sure letting up yards and catches still not good but bend and dont break works). Barrett makes me want to think he should play safety? Seemed fast, but just too small idk. The two biggest knocks i have for our draft is no o line depth for us (we legit have a guard and a guard tackle taking reps at center like wut), and two off ball linebackers plus running back, so positional value is lacking.
I agree with the Falcons 2nd round pick being the more questionable of the first two. Can't understand Ruke over Johnny Newton, and trading up makes it look even worse. Orhorhoro did light up the combine so maybe there's some untapped potential there I guess?
Michael Penix pick makes some sense to me. They felt like they needed to draft a replacement for Kirk either this year or next year and they might not have their first rounder next year. Also they were worried if they trade down that the 3 qb needy teams behind them could’ve taken the 3 remaining first round qbs. According to falcons, they won’t have another chance to draft a replacement than this year and they had a better grade on Penix than JJ and Bo so that’s their opinion. You can hate all you want but it’s not as much of a shocker as it may have seemed when it happened.
Thank you, everybody in the comments think they the GM, let the players play first before goin with a opinion, Blank ain’t write yall a check so y yall care so much
I said this in the comments of yesterday’s stock exchange episode and I’ll say it again. How is ruke a reach over Johnny Newton if he’s already such a beast on my madden team? Bet you didn’t think abt that Marcus.
My only criticism of the Panthers is that I wish they would have addressed the O-line a little more in this draft. I like Moton and Hunt on the right side, and the hope is Ekwonu takes the next step at LT. But I still have serious questions about LG, C, and their depth. There were a bunch of REALLY good interior linemen available on day 3 and boy would I have loved it if they had brought in a Mahogany, Limmer, McCormick, Nourzad, or Bortolini. Damien Lewis and Corbett scare me in that interior lol.
Thanks as always for informing me on my opinions Marcus :^) Outside of Legette and JT Sanders picks, kinda disliked our draft (another useless "freak" LB), though I'll probably love Brookes when I don't have watch Miles run into lineman anymore
I understand your point on McMillan for the Bucs vs the value of Troy Franklin. I think they probably thought that skill set would overlap with Trey Palmer. Am a bit skeptical on Braswell too but read he had a 19% pass rush win rate. Better than Dallas Turner in that metric
Couldn’t agree more on Rattler man. I get it, odds are he turns out to be nothin, but his talent level alone I thought was worth a 3rd round swing and wouldn’t have hated someone taking him late round 2 with the QB run round 1. Traits wise Rattler is better than most you’ll be able to draft round 3 or later. Def a steal
I like Penix, but I'd say he closer to ready to play. So it doesn't make sense they paid Kirko all the money and draft him. Hopefully he is good. We could have taken any defensive player at 8.
Anyone know Math? Pry Not Packers fans but everyone else 😅. Cousins 4years, 100mil. 100% Guaranteed. (For comparison Justin Fields is 24, so is Penix) Meaning Penix won't get a chance to start until he is 29-30years old. 😳🤷🏻💯 Pack did this w/Love, but Love was 20 years old when he got picked. Love is pry 24-25 Rn. That makes the comp really different. I like Penix.
Most people only look at this with the benefit of hindsight. When we signed Kirk bothJJ and Bo were deemed day 2 guys and there were a ton of teams in need of qb so it was a good decision to sign Kirk and then probably a good decision to sign a future qb seeing that we probably wouldn’t be in striking distance of a similar caliber qb prospect in the future.
huh? How is it hindsight to say that this was bad process. This idea that the Falcons, who've been mid for years and wasted draft picks are suddenly going to be too far away to draft a qb is also pretty comical.
Im with Marcus in that the trade AND selection of Orhorhoro is far more egregious than the Penix selection. When i saw they had traded up, I was hoping it was for Newton... and then the announcement came in. Should've kept #79 and taken a better WR prospect or a boundary CB. I really want to know who their area scout for the SE is and exactly how much power they have given the John Fitzpatrick/Zion Logue picks in recent years and even the Woerner signing.
Atleast they didn't take Tim Tebow 2.0 like the Vikings did 😳😳😳. Guy was missing throws 3-5 feet at the combine. Penix is a good player, just won't start til he's 29-30. I liked Hooker, pry never taking Goff's job.
I believe they didn't wanna tell kirk cousins about this before signing him because this was their plan the whole time, and if they told him, he wouldn't have signed there.
The reason I give the Penix pick an F has nothing to do with him as a QB, and everything to do with how the pick was completely inexplicable from a business and team-building perspective. One way or another, you're either gonna have Penix sitting for 3/5 years of his rookie deal or you're gonna cut Kirk Cousins after a year or two and take on massive amounts of dead cap. The fact that Penix will be 28 years old when the totality of Cousins' contract has concluded is just a shit covered cherry on top. Also, it ignores MAJOR needs at their iDL and CB, the latter of which they didn't even bother with. And finally it likely pissed Kirk off and is going to create a really weird team dynamic. None of that even mentions the fact that I had Penix way down the board as my QB6 and I didn't think he was worth a pick inside the top 20.
@@ItsKillaBouie That’s true for almost every team in the NFL and they don’t spend a top 10 pick on a backup. If they were in love with Penix or if they were worried about Kirk’s health, they should have never signed Kirk to an expensive long term deal. They should have signed a Minshew or Brissett to a cheap 1 year deal to either mentor or backup Penix.
Falcons fan, but I truly do not think i'm on copium. This draft was terrible asset management, but I really like the players, the day 2/3 d-lineman (mainly trice and dorlus) are the guys I wanted, the trade was just questionable. I truly think our defense is better and all 4 mid round guys are going to be 300+ snap guys in year one, the one unthinkable thing is that we didn't come out with any of the CBs that dropped to the mid 2nd. There is really no reason that we should have let Kool-aid go to Nawlens or Dejean go to Philly or that we didn't pick up someone like Myles Harden and sign Zion as a UDFA.
You would think Newton would be the perfect Grady Jarrett heir apparent but the falcons for some reason always go depth when the falcons haven’t had an alpha pass rusher since John Abraham.
The rational for the Penix pick: Kirk has a 2 year deal, not actually 4. With Kirk, we will not be picking high enough to select a top QB while Kirk is still here. After he’s gone, we’d be back in QB purgatory. Not to mention, next QB class is very weak. The Penix pick makes sense. Taking Ruke over Newton is inexcusable though
@@JohnSmith-tm5sh he’s a plug and play high floor QB who doesn’t need development and can play right away, would be way higher on the pick if it was JJ McCarthy
Unless Cousins gets injured or simply under-performs. Then it's genius. Look, in reality, Cousins is the bad deal. If Lamar is a bust based only on his playoff performances, what does it say about a guy who has been in the league longer, is worse in the playoffs _AND_ the regular season? Even without the age & injury concerns, he is WAY too great a reach. It's not like Daniel Jones where he's still young enough he might change. The Vikings offense was *designed around his strengths **_and had Justin Jefferson!_* I think we've seen his ceiling & now he's recovering from a torn achilles at this age. They didn't know Penix would be there or that they wouldn't need to trade up. So Penix isn't the head-scratcher. As for Cousins, well, he's guaranteed 100 million $ if he Never Plays. I think he'll be okay.
If im the panthers, im gonna get trevin wallace to work on his pass rushing moves and see how he does as an edge. I think his skill set and athleticism fits better in that role. Less costly in the pass game. Hes young and can put some size on, 6’1 238ish pounds is a bit light but you can put some weight in him. And you honestly have to teach him the same amount of linebacker stuff as you do edge stuff lol. It also gives the 3rd round pick more value since its on edge. Just go let him be an athlete and raise hell on the edges on 3rd downs for a bit. See how it goes. 🤷♂️
As a Falcons fan my take is that the Penix pick is not as far fetched as people are making it out to be. The worse move was definitely the 2nd round trade up. Cousins will get over it, he got his guaranteed money and bedsides it seemed clear to me that the Penix pick wasn't planned, it was made on the fly so he learned of it as soon as they did it. If it works out they are set at Qb for years so it's worth the risk. That being said they didn't kill this draft overall and thats disappointing. And to trade up and reach for a guy? very bad.
I just feel like the organizational process that the Penix pick represents is what makes it so awful, there is very little about the Falcons plan that makes sense for the short-term, future, or financially.
Ran back across this one. In my opinion, Ebiketi just came off a 6 sack year. Let him start now…earn his extension. Ruke can be a good rotation with Jarret coming off ACL. Trice will compete. Falcons are good.
Here's my issue with the Penix pick. Dude's going to be 28 about 3 years from now when he'll finally get the reigns. I don't know that you spend that high of a Day 1 pick on that. Plus, the Falcons are literally the epitome of the 28-3 meme at this point.
So if Penix starts at 28, then plays for 7 more years at a high level, would you call this a bad pick? He'd be 35 at that point, not ridiculous to think a pocket QB is making it to 35 if he has the talent. Most teams would give up multiple firsts for a QB that was a great starter for 7 years. (If your issue is injury history, then that's a different thing, I'm just talking about age)
@@codyb.3015 let’s been honest, if Kirk get hurt or start slacking, he getting replaced, this the NFL, Tom Brady wouldn’t have a chance if Drew Bledsoe ain’t get hurt, that’s how this goes
@@TheMattTrakker This is such a ridiculous take. So if Kirk plays well for 3 years, then Penix takes over and plays well, this will still be a bad pick? For all you know, Penix would be garbage and lose confidence if he started right away The only way this pick is bad is if you think Kirk or Penix will not work out. If they both work out, this move was a great idea.
Then we'll know for sure but regardless of what we were saying, you can't possibly have watched the Panthers last year and thought that was a serviceable situation for a Quarterback.
@@ThatFranchiseGuy Then you are saying the evaluation last year was wrong? I'm not even disagreeing that it was a bad situation (despite the corpse of Andy Dalton looking ok in his 1 start), my question is more will this year actually be enough for people to "know for sure"? How much improvement does Bryce need to show?
Look... Andy Dalton cooked in that game I'm not even gonna lie. Seattles defense was pretty terrible, Bryce had a similar performance late in the season against an equally bad Packers Defense. I've been saying that I was drastically wrong on both how good the Panthers situation was and how good Bryce would be right away.
I'm sick of pundits fretting the ages of players as if a given 24yo is worthless. My actual concern re QB Penix is his health. That's more of a true issue than his age for Christ sakes! I'm watching George Blanda fr the early 60's n recalled him playing in the 80's...granted, he was an anomaly!
I honestly thought you were a little too nice when it came to ATL. This is an absolute disaster IMO and that’s coming from someone who had Penix as his QB 2. We had an opportunity to build around a win now roster and then maybe consider a QB in a year or two and yet again we shit the bed. And round 2 baffles me with multiple DTs around the same grade why trade up? The rest of the draft was ok but good golly goodness it’s a tough time to be a Falcons fan.

The reason it makes sense: Next years QB class is very weak. With Kirk, ATL will not be picking high enough for a top QB prospect again in the next few years. Kirk has 2 years in his deal. This was their only chance to get a QB of the future and MPJ was one of their top players in the draft
@@MarchOnRome You're happy with him over JJ? Personally had Penix higher, but that wasn't exactly consensus

Was floored when they picked Ruke over Jer’Zhan Newton
@@ryanleadbitter7749 yea man smh
Good on ATL for doing it their way. I admire their bravery and thinking outside the generic box
I'm a bucs fan and I agree with with option.... s teers I thought was alittle much but I think ur right!
I agree with the Falcons 2nd round pick being the more questionable of the first two. Can't understand Ruke over Johnny Newton, and trading up makes it look even worse. Orhorhoro did light up the combine so maybe there's some untapped potential there I guess?
33:10 what do you think of No 70 on Dukes O-Line. He looks like an interesting player
I don’t think you need to have your little speech to the haters at the beginning. Just jump straight into the grades stuff.
I mean, that's what the video divisions are for
Michael Penix pick makes some sense to me.
Thank you, everybody in the comments think they the GM, let the players play first before goin with a opinion, Blank ain’t write yall a check so y yall care so much
The fact that they messed up the kirk negotiating by tampering isn't an excuse. Losing a 1st for that is enough of a fireable mistake.
I said this in the comments of yesterday’s stock exchange episode and I’ll say it again. How is ruke a reach over Johnny Newton if he’s already such a beast on my madden team? Bet you didn’t think abt that Marcus.
Been looking forward to this since yesterday
My only criticism of the Panthers is that I wish they would have addressed the O-line a little more in this draft. I like Moton and Hunt on the right side, and the hope is Ekwonu takes the next step at LT. But I still have serious questions about LG, C, and their depth. There were a bunch of REALLY good interior linemen available on day 3 and boy would I have loved it if they had brought in a Mahogany, Limmer, McCormick, Nourzad, or Bortolini. Damien Lewis and Corbett scare me in that interior lol.
you called juwan johnson ( saints Te ) jauan jennings lol
I have a suggestion: highlight the current player you're talking about in the list, so if people want to skip to a particular player they can.
Thanks as always for informing me on my opinions Marcus :^)
Outside of Legette and JT Sanders picks, kinda disliked our draft (another useless "freak" LB), though I'll probably love Brookes when I don't have watch Miles run into lineman anymore
Also go Ruke! Even as a Panthers fan, hope he follows in Grady Jarrett's footsteps. His name always gave me a smile on Saturdays
Thank you Marcus ❤️
Hell yeah bump these out
Thanks for the content!
Kirk's contract is only guaranteed for two seasons
Been looking forward to this
“I’ve been looking forward to this”
Funny I actually compare brooks to Leveon bell with his patient running style and vision also being very slippery to get off tackles
First comment and can't wait to see what you think about the Bengals Draft
Can’t wait to come back to this video 3 years from now to make you eat your words.
Falcons really doing everything in their power to not pull away from the rest of the division
I agree with the Orhorhoro pick being worse than the pick at #8. At least with Penix, you didn't have to give away any picks to pick him.
Atleast they didn't take Tim Tebow 2.0 like the Vikings did 😳😳😳. Guy was missing throws 3-5 feet at the combine. Penix is a good player, just won't start til he's 29-30. I liked Hooker, pry never taking Goff's job.
As a Atlanta Falcons fan, I'm pretty sure My GM Terry informant still works for the saints..🤔 ..😢😅
If Kirk get hurt n you ain’t got Penix, we gon be in the same situation we was at the beginning of the yr
You have to wonder if this hurts them with free agents going forward, as well. This is a bad look for the team.
Loved the Penix pick. Rise up
Number 8 at 39:52 probably accurately represents how Falcons fans felt when they announced Penix at 8
Falcons fan, but I truly do not think i'm on copium.
Newton's second Jones fracture surgery is huge. He might not play this year and could affect career...
Way too lenient on the Penix pick……. It’s the worst process in NFL draft history without hindsight
The good thing to be said about it is, Kirk is 36 and coming off an injury, and Penix is a pretty solid QB prospect for pick 8.
@@JohnSmith-tm5sh he’s a plug and play high floor QB who doesn’t need development and can play right away, would be way higher on the pick if it was JJ McCarthy
nah

Ngl Marcus… I think you owe Fontenot an apology for being so hard on the Ruke pick after this Jerzhan foot news😅
couldnt see a hole at a dunkin donuts is golden 😂
Yeah these were solid drafts
As a Falcons fan my take is that the Penix pick is not as far fetched as people are making it out to be. The worse move was definitely the 2nd round trade up. Cousins will get over it, he got his guaranteed money and bedsides it seemed clear to me that the Penix pick wasn't planned, it was made on the fly so he learned of it as soon as they did it. If it works out they are set at Qb for years so it's worth the risk. That being said they didn't kill this draft overall and thats disappointing. And to trade up and reach for a guy? very bad.
I could 100% see Rattler coming in and being the franchise QB. Not saying it’s a lock, but I could I see him being a top 3 QB from this class.
I just feel like the organizational process that the Penix pick represents is what makes it so awful, there is very little about the Falcons plan that makes sense for the short-term, future, or financially.
Miles Sanders couldn’t see a hole in a Dunk’n Donuts 😂😂😂
Ran back across this one. In my opinion, Ebiketi just came off a 6 sack year. Let him start now…earn his extension. Ruke can be a good rotation with Jarret coming off ACL. Trice will compete. Falcons are good.
LOL at the pancake block at 39:48
Can’t wait to watch Ruke cover Chris Godwin in the slot this year
I would've liked to see the bucs draft a linebacker this is looking to be Lavonte David's final season.
But we're focusing on winning the division this year and Winfield has shown he can lead the defense
I'm a big fan of Dennis from last year BTW!
If the Falcons got Newton and Trice on day 2, people would be talking way different about their draft.
At this point Terry Fontenot doesn’t know what he’s doing
Here's my issue with the Penix pick. Dude's going to be 28 about 3 years from now when he'll finally get the reigns. I don't know that you spend that high of a Day 1 pick on that. Plus, the Falcons are literally the epitome of the 28-3 meme at this point.
He’s 23 finna be 24
So if Penix starts at 28, then plays for 7 more years at a high level, would you call this a bad pick?
He'd be 35 at that point, not ridiculous to think a pocket QB is making it to 35 if he has the talent.
Most teams would give up multiple firsts for a QB that was a great starter for 7 years.
(If your issue is injury history, then that's a different thing, I'm just talking about age)
@@codyb.3015 let’s been honest, if Kirk get hurt or start slacking, he getting replaced, this the NFL, Tom Brady wouldn’t have a chance if Drew Bledsoe ain’t get hurt, that’s how this goes
The Penix pick is like okay, I wouldn’t do it but whatever. But drafting Ruke over Jerzhan Newton tells ne they don’t understand how to draft at all
I really hope Michael Penix Jr turns into that guy that everyone says “remember when everyone hated that pick?” 😂
It's not fair to Penix, but even if he ends up being good, it's still a stupid pick. Sign Kirk or draft Penix, either is defensible, both are not.
@@TheMattTrakker? If Kirk get hurt whose stepping in
@@TheMattTrakker This is such a ridiculous take.
So if Kirk plays well for 3 years, then Penix takes over and plays well, this will still be a bad pick?
For all you know, Penix would be garbage and lose confidence if he started right away
The only way this pick is bad is if you think Kirk or Penix will not work out. If they both work out, this move was a great idea.
Surprised Penix isn’t an F esp since considering ur grade cuz I feel the same.
People were saying the panthers were a pretty good situation at this time last year, what if Bryce Young just...kinda sucks?
Then we'll know for sure but regardless of what we were saying, you can't possibly have watched the Panthers last year and thought that was a serviceable situation for a Quarterback.
Last year the panthers could’ve Been a lot better if half the team didn’t get hurt.
Draft grades don’t matter no one is correct with these things. (Love your channel and your analysis Marcus)
