I appreciate your focus on functionality and ability of the filter vs the aesthetic. Beauty can be found in the simplicity and greatness of its design.

I essentially made the same thing with a 5 gallon bucket. Works like a charm. I never thought of using a trash can. Stacked two milk crates in the pond and put the pump in the upper one. Placed a paver and bucket right on top. If it fails it fails without any catastrophe.

The only point I would say for folks to understand is the lift. make sure your pump can handle the vertical lift from the pump to the top of the Can. you also pointed out in the last vid to make sure not to use the fire-resistant polyfill but did not this time around maybe a good point to pin for folks watching. Just recently subscribed but been enjoying your content. I am into guppies and smaller fish but the wild and big ones are neat too.
    What brought me here:
I picked up one of these pumps based on one of your previous vids as we adopted two turtles from a family who needed to rehome. I decided to go the 300-gallon tub route and hopefully in a week or two will move them from their temp home to the indoor pound although it is going to be close to getting that pound down my stairs.

Great simple design. I would add one thing though, an emergency overflow return that hopefully would never be needed. Right above the layer of poly just in case the poly clogged up enough to actually fill and overflow the can. It is probably overkill but might save flooding a basement or pumping the tank down to the pump intake level in the small trash can can. Thanks for the info and ideas.

I’m wondering about the bottom of the tank where the sand is. How does that get cleaned and cycled?
I like the holes at the top of the trash can, but think it’s missing the chance to filter closer to the bottom.
Is there such thing as a cut off switch that triggers at a lower predetermined water level?

Any recommendations on fish between 10-20cm (roughly 4-8 inches) that can live in a pond just under 500L (roughly 130 US Gallons) & 22-26°C (roughly 71-79°F) if the pond also doubles as a splash pool during summer? Besides goldfish, as our other pond already has them, we are hoping to have luck with a nice catfish specie?

  • @Nerothos91
    @Nerothos91 3 роки тому +5

@SC fish keeping if u want less maintenance, the water should hit mechanical filtering first (Course pad -> Medium pad -> Fine floss or pad) then the water should hit the biological media such as porous ceramic/glass etc (around 1kg of bio media per 100 liters if lightly stocked or else 2 kg per 100 liters), then the water should hit chemical if needed.
As you have it setup now, the polyfill will get clogged very fast, and you will have to do alot of water changes to reduce the nitrates.

he just does not answer these questions, I have city water so I do need to add a conditioner to my water or let it sit for a day to let the chlorine evaporate out of it then its safe to put the fish in it. I personally will fill my 300 gallon tank up fuller. as i am about to set mine up and use this filteration system Zac has made. BTW if you have well water you can put your fish right in the pond.

Great video! I am planning to get a 300 gallon stock tank like that pretty soon for my pacus. Well for a while until they outgrow it..... Than I would upgrade to something even bigger...... I have been watching a lot of videos and planning out how I’m going to build the filtration, I than was just thinking and remembered my pacus like to chew...... They chew on airline tubing, they also would chew cords but I have the heater cords to close to the top that they can’t get them. So I’m thinking about using a upside down basket, than running the pvc and the pump cord out the bottom of the basket, than elevate the pump on a pot under the basket. But than I was thinking they would chew the pump cord........ do you have any ideas to protect the cord? I was thinking about using a pool noodle and cutting it to size, than run the cord through the noodle to protect the cord. Do you think that would work? I also plan on having the heaters in the filter. I would also want to have a lot of different filter media in the filter, like the pot scrubbers, some bio balls, some bags of ceramic rings, a couple carbon bags, than have the filter padding. I also would want to have lava rock at the bottom around the pot that elevates the basket that holds the media so there’s lots of places for the bacteria to grow and to be able to handle my messy pacus. I’d also want to use a 55 gallon trash can to hold even more media! Do you have a heater in there? Do you think having heaters in the trash can would work? I can’t wait to get my pacus upgraded so I can upgrade my cichlids to my 125 gallon! Does your pacu ever chew on cords? Also I can’t wait to see a fish room tour when you get your fish room finished! I also would like to try to start documenting some of my fish and other animal projects and setups on my channel in the future as well! And I can’t wait to see what that 3rd fish is that was in the box in the last video! Also your probably my favorite fish keeping channel on UA-cam!!!!!

@fondestvirgo you could add a release valve if you want to, but for me that's just one more area the could give you issues or leaks!
Clean the media by grabbing a bucket of the pond water and rinsing it out in that! Otherwise if the inside of the trashcan ever gets so dirty you need to do a deep clean, just drain the water out, give it a good scrub and rinse it out before setting it back up! It's pretty minimal maintenance for as big of a filter it is!

(May 2024) I have a question. Wouldn't the water level inside the trash can not get any higher than the water going into the pond? If so, I know the sponges would be "watered" as the flow trickles down the trash can, but how does this grow enough bacteria to be of use? Just asking.

It depends on how much flow you have going into the trash can as well as how quickly it goes out. You could set it up so that the sponges are submerged by putting them at the bottom of the trashcan and having the outlets higher than the sponges. The more water you have sitting in the trashcan though, the more weight and risk for issues with the can.
Trickle filters are very common in the hobby though as the water flowing over and through the sponges does allow the bacteria to grow and keep the pond clean! I won't pretend to be a scientist and act like I know how it works... I just know that it does! Haha.
      Hope that helps!

Could I just zip tie the pump to a cinder block close to the surface of the water?

Yupp lol, I have mine on top of a milk crate, but I have aggressive fish so I put it inside another milk crate so the stingrays don't destroy my pump

Would this type of filter system work for a 700-800 gal turtle pond (2 turtles, handful of fish)?

I have a very similar filter on my 700 gallon turtle pond, turtles are just dirtier so I have to change the polyfil out more often
