OutSTANDING, Moe!!! I have never before seen an AAR so crisply narrated and annotated as this one. I don't own this game, but almost feel like I'm learning the rules by watching what you're doing!!! I also love the announcement of errors you make as the various commanders!
Thanks Stiglr, glad you are liking it. This started as an experiment with the BALTAP scenario and I decided to carry it into this one as well, which helped me learn a lot about doing AARs like this. Unfortunately, I also made some minor mistakes with the rules in places, some I did catch at the time and others I caught after the fact. Other little things like the move into the city that John posted about below I did for artistic license, to give the move through that gap and into the city a sense of action/momentum of the divisions slamming through that gap. I should have worded it better and noted verbally or on screen that I did the roll separately to avoid any confusion for the viewer. Oh, and I've got more bad move commentary by yours truly wearing both hats, with the Turn 3 being epic stupidity! I had to laugh at myself on that one. :)
Thanks so much for the kind words Chris, I really appreciate it! Glad you found it enjoyable, and I hope helpful as well. I would highly recommend getting this game, it's a pure gem IMO. Bruce did an amazing job with it, as did Compass. Awesome quality across the board. This is my game of the year.
Looking forward to seeing the follow up turns. Breaking this down into turn AAR bite size pieces keeps it interesting and has me coming back for more. I served in the Marine corps during this period of time so it is interesting to see.
Glad you’re liking it so far! It’s an experiment I’m messing with and I’m learning as I go how best to do this, so all feedback is welcome! A brother jarhead too eh? Semper Fi!
I really like this AAR format, very well done! My copy of the game is clipped and good to go, but haven't found the time yet to set it up. Two things that bug me a little about this design (compared to, say, the Next War series). a) The ease at which air-power can destroy multiple brigades with a single die-roll. b) By the looks of it the CRT heavily favours the attacker who seems to take minimal losses. That doesn't create the feel of attrition that I would have expected. As I said, these are comments by someone who hasn't actually played the game :) Looking forward to seeing how the game develops.
Thanks, I'm happy to hear that you like it! Air is abstracted to keep things going, and it works really well IMO and fits with the scale nicely I believe. The CRT does favor the attacker at the higher odds, as you would expect but even with higher odds you're only killing 2 steps at most per attack. So if you want to hold an area, placing 3-4 Brigades will give you enough room to take losses and hopefully still hold the hex if you can avoid retreat through either a no retreat result or sacrificing another unit to hold. I think you'll really enjoy it, I think this is a pure gem!
Hi Moe most enjoyable series your AAR's are getting better and better high quality great work quick question for you Are the NATO reforger sites as important as they are in the 1985 series ?
I think REFORGER sites are equally important in both games, for obvious reasons. They’re handled a little differently in either game. IIRC, in UaIS, any REFORGER site occupied or destroyed gets moved to sealift and delayed 5 turns. In NATO, the unit equipment is considered in its starting REFORGER space on the map. If it’s destroyed, it’s gone. It works well with NATO as is since the game is set for 14 turns max. So things are a bit more immediate in NATO comparatively. I need to break out UaIS again. It’s been a while since I last messed with it and I’ll likely need to relearn it all again. lol

@@chrisridley4840 excellent! I will be coming back to NATO again, but I do need to clear my table to make room for some other stuff I need to cover very soon, Try to get in a couple of more games I need to work on and then back to NATO when I can leave it on the table a bit longer and work through some of the other scenarios. I wish I had a basement with multiple tables, so I could switch between them easily when needing to cover other games.
@@MoesWargames I hear you UAIS has been on the table for 5 weeks and counting but as i'am enjoying it it is ok but every now again my other games call to me 🙂 And up next for you ?
Just found out about this game... Really want it. This month already preordered air & armour from the same designer and got MBT and the FRG expansion. This seems to be the next step up in scale.
I thought attacks on cities required a battle marker from the WP as well? Braunschweig does have a defence strength of 1, so those WP divisions shouldn't just be able to waltz in.
You are correct, and I did that in the AAR for effect. The attack roll I did do and defeated the city with a roll of 4 on an attack of 5-1. I took a little artistic license with that bit. Good catch! ;)
@@MoesWargames I have had to correct my opponent from just walking through the cities too many times - it is an important concept in this game. Not many games have this function.
@@billpostscratcher2025 very true. You’ll notice that I’ve done it elsewhere, I was just doing a more narrative approach with that one instance to show the Soviets blowing through the line. This is an experiment I tried for doing future AARs. It’s definitely not a tutorial, I made several mistakes (as do we all) while learning the game. I plan on doing another in the future and will strive to ensure to get all of the rules down correctly for that one. 👍🏻
@@billpostscratcher2025 it is a very welcome change to what we’ve become accustomed to in pretty much every other game. Most of the time it’s like a game of tag, whoever last touched it owns it. lol
