The Kim dynasty and North Korea's nuclear weapons | DW Documentary

- North Korea. Geographically small, it nonetheless looms large in the geopolitical consciousness. The country is isolated, its population desperately poor. The Kim dynasty has ruled for three generations. How does this ruling family manage to make its power felt around the world?
The nuclear program is central to North Korea's strategy. For decades, the regime devoted increasingly large amounts of its resources to acquiring the bomb. Then, in 2006, North Korea detonated a nuclear bomb for the first time. It was a signal to the world: North Korea was a force to be reckoned with.
The Kim dynasty has also acquired strong partners. China regards the country as a military buffer zone and keeps it heavily dependent on its economy. With China in its corner, North Korea is not intimidated by the United States. Now, North Korea is also allying with Russia and supporting it in the war against Ukraine.
Propaganda, intimidation and surveillance form the pillars of North Korean society. The state’s top-secret structures are largely opaque because the country has been hermetically sealed off from the outside world. The Kim dynasty began with regime founder Kim Il-sung, who was in power from 1948 to 1994. Creating a unique cult of personality, he built a regime according to his own ideas. After his death, his son Kim Jong-Il was in charge until his death 2011. Then, Kim Jong-Il’s son, Kim Jong-un, took over the leadership position. Should Kim Jong-un die, his sister or daughter are considered his likeliest successors.
The North Korean government exercises total control over the country and its population. With the help of a comprehensive surveillance system, the state engages in extreme repression, using everything from intimidation to prison camps and death sentences to keep its people in check.
With the help of leading experts, including former officials of the Pyongyang regime, the film analyzes the strategies deployed by the North Korean government.

I do love background music in every single documentary of DW! It brings some special feelings to what you watch on this channel...Love this channel very much for keep me educated.
I really don't know how this story ends .... What astounds me is this continued high tech missile and nuclear weapon development whilst farming remains largely unmechanised.
Thanks, good documentary.
Best case: Rocket man brings us fusion energy (in the form of electricity)
Worst case: Rocket man brings fusion energy to our cities (not in the form of electricity)
Probably doesn’t end well.

But if people cared about each other then there will be no more fighting.
That means everyone would get along and the reality of humanity can reach its ultimate potential. They cant live a life like that.

So the USA doesn’t want any other country to develop nuclear weapons but the US does own such weapons?
Yes, US and USSR are the smartest creatores on the earth. Whenever they want so they eliminate thr others.
Because so many other countries do, the US keeps nukes to keep other nuclear countries at bay. I believe the US would destroy all of their nukes if everyone else did too. Iran, Russia, China, NK, etc, etc. Most countries that had Nukes, no longer have them because of US diplomacy. Unfortunately, Ukraine's nukes were given up with promised peace with Russia. But that fell through. You can't trust anyone, including the US. But the US does it's best to keep the world at peace, although they stick their nose in too many things some times. Noone else would do it if the US didn't though.
They can't attack a nuclear state
russia also don't want anyone else to have nukes.. china also

0:53 The intro song is called “In the House in a Heartbeat”.
The one they use here is probably a different version. They probably remade so they avoid copyright since it doesn’t show any results when I’m using Shazam.
Thanks I used Shazam too and didn't come up with anything but it did indeed sound very similar to the music from 28 days later
i just comented, man it fits so well with nk
Kim does not want war, he is not suicidal. He wants the current situation to continue and in order to do that he must escalate and appease.
Doing just one would destroy him.
Bro can’t even supply the important members of his own army with good consistent Healthcare, Lol.
For sure. It’s been common consensus since the Cold War that the usage of nuclear weapons against another nuclear power (or one allied to a nuclear power) would be mutually assured destruction.
He does not want, but doesn't mean he's not prepared for it! Love their tenacity and refusal to submit!
No one wants war except the US.

'atomic bombs are dropped on hiroshima and nagasaki' by which country are they dropped?
USA. The only country to ever use them against people. And those people were civilians
I bet it was the Martians!
They erased my other post saying which country dropped them. Censorship at youtube is getting worse
The same country currently still occupying Germany.

When will we ever hear N.Korea's side of the story
True
that’s a funny question considering they refuse to tell it.

Really informative
Interesting fact, the armistice for the Korean war was signed in what is today the Westin Seoul. Saw it on an engraving at the entrance while staying at the hotel.
I can't imagine how it feels for the people on either side of Korea. They are your "enemy" but at the same time, they also come from the same roots and speak the same language as you.
the people on North Korea don’t see south koreans as enemies, they see USA as enemies.
Like india and pakistani....plaestine and isreal...all war is cause by british colonise and uno
Twins enemies
I am pretty sure no-one in S. Korea cares other than some faint human interest type thing and N. Koreans are just trying to keep their heads down and not get labor camped.
They are family.

What bothers me is that dw like other wetsern MSM albeit doesn't take the Other sides view. Doesn't interview people from all those countries. The narrative being told and context being given albeit a bit better on terms of balanced reporting but still not at all near what we would call neutral journalism
100%. I by no means think North Korea is the good guy but it’d be nice to hear both sides rather than just “they’re crazy” or clips of emotional propaganda videos any time North Korea’s views are on the table.

“The nuclear button is located on my desk” 🤣 I know the only button in his desk is for more Cheetos & Henessey. Current bets on his stroke day are as close as 10/24
Yeah, well his sister is even crazier than fatman Kim. She’s more likely to start something. Especially if it’s her time of the month, Yikes! 😳.
He made sure to make missiles pointy.. 🚀
I missed the new part. What is new?

Kim Jong Ung and Kim Ung Jong. Nice siblings 🤣🤣
i love the Dystopian music at 1:00 =P wish everything wasnt so hopeless
funny thing is that when they try finding pictures of dystopian pyongyang, they cant, the footage they showed pyongyang which honestly looks very modern and advanced with skylines and brand new streets, they used to do it a decade ago when those buildings didn't stand for the most part but now they cant anymore lol, current pyongyang literally looks like the average blend of dubai and a russian city with its architecture and the way its built, its a pretty nice place
Its not fair that some country have nukes that too in thousands but other are not allowed to have even one.
I think none should have it or all should have it if they want.
By the time he pushes the button his country will be reduced to ashes.

Best documentary for the year 2024.
Kim Jung Un always looks so happy. I think he's a good man.
I like these documentaries
Say what you will, They are not perfect but had they not start "playing with fire" as you're saying they would probably have been offered "Democracy" a long time ago like Irak, Afghanistan, Libya etc... 🤷♂
Democracy is not a commodity to be bought or given, it's in within you, it's upon you to exercise or suppress it.
US and the West are only helping in support of those that want to exercise it against the suppressors.
Don't mislead, they wanted to conquer the south with their communist backers.
North Korea is wiser than most

Who is the regional buffer for north Korean intercontinental missiles that may hit New York or DC? Is it Japan? If so, this documentary explains the massive us army bases in Yokohama and south Korea or even hawai
It’s either that or they take the long route over Mainland Asia and Europe

When I see big missiles and north Korea I tend to click to see what Kim is up to.
that missle is full of hay and twigs 🤣
There's something oddly fascinating about watching North Korea's history and it's quick rise and its steep decline. Been binge-watching videos of North Korea these last few days Non-Stop... All of the horrible things we hear about North Korea all of these days; it's actually happening in real time.
Do you not understand that the reason that North Korea is the way it is is because the USA totally destroyed and bombed out their country, killing at least 20% of their entire population, and continues to heavily sanction and embargo the country?
It's all fun and games till you're sweeping up the fallout..
I like how they just threw a bunch of numbers on it
Not that I support North Korea having nuclear weapons, or any country for that matter, but had it not own any, the west would have flattened it by now. Countries turn to nuclear as a deterrent from being attacked.
That does not follow, as NK did not have nuclear weapons in the eighties, and the west did not flatten it. The issue NK has, is the rest of the world want to ignore them. If they would truly be a hermit kingdom, no one would care.
It's very brave of you to declare your IQ below zero on this public platform. Your family will be proud of this moment! 🎉🎉

@@sufnskanne469 Hes not right as North Korea didnt have nuclear weapons for a long time and the West didnt flattern it. Isreal has nuclear weapons but was still attacked. This is rather simple to follow
I still don't get why they are fighting each other for. Aren't they the same people the same blood? this is so stupid
well, couldn't the same be said for ALL wars? We're all the same us human's ...
Bc ideology and human nature.
It's the power mad leaders that decide on war. The ordinary people just get dragged into it, unfortunately 😢.
It's because of ideology. They maybe have the same blood but different ideology doesn't allow any rooms for understanding. Like during the American Civil War between the Union State and Confederate State
Remember East and West Germany? Same people, same language, same blood, but for forty years, poised to destroy each other in a nuclear war. Ideology trumps blood.
Why DW making a lot of documentary about Kim and North Korea? What is going on with DW with Kim?
