I'm gearing up for a huge push to make my new ultimate beginners carpentry course in early 2024! I'll be taking a step back from UA-cam...buy you can still reach me at The Honest Carpenter Website.
Happy New Year, everybody! See you in 2024! - Навчання та стиль
You really are honest and I respect it. Even though you will stop making these videos for a while you really have saved me from some serious accidents that could’ve happened while working. I’ve started woodworking and carpentry at 14 years old. All I can say is thank you without your videos I would probably be seriously injured right now. I wish you luck❤ happy new year
Love your content!
Truly a honest carpenter!
Looking forward to 2024
Looking forward to it Ethan! One thing regarding structures I’d like to see is how to “correct to square”. Almost all woodworking UA-cam videos show the star of the show “checking for square”, and it always is. That is of little help to those of us who struggle with getting things square. I’d love to see how to make some corrections when they check for square - it isn’t - and now a correction needs to be made. Otherwise - why does everyone include it in their video to “check for square”? Maybe I’m alone in this - but it would be helpful! Thank you!
It's a worthy topic, because square, level, and plumb are the key to have a project work out. If any of them are out the problem really shows up when installing doors, trim, siding, or decking.
It sounds like Ethan will be very busy. If he doesn't have time to address this feel free to reach out to me.
Yeah … tips on ensuring the result will be square… would be very helpful.
@@heiser_bill Okay. Size matters. How one squares a deck frame vs. a cabinet box are different processes. What's your current or planned project?
@@ST-0311 ahh, I see what you mean. My immediate project is to build a workbench - maybe like the door-top one you demo’d, or maybe plywood top. I have a laundry list of projects on my list, including an entryway bench, a table for under a wall mounted tv, a simple desk, nightstands, … probably other similar things, but all “smallish. I built a catio recently and it came out ok except a couple non-square braces. I’d like to build a woodshed too, but probably not near term.
Thanks for your responses! I consider myself a beginner (but ambitious) so ‘preciate your instructive videos.
@@heiser_bill E-mail incoming. Subject: Square.
How you don't have a million subs is beyond me. I have always enjoyed your videos. I watch some of them over and over just to absorb all that you are teaching, I can honestly tell you the 2 worst things about your videos is 1.)They are always too short. 2.) I can only give them one thumbs up.
Ethan, you do a WONDERFUL job in your videos. I wish I could email you a beer. Keep up the great work.
Your channel just keeps getting bigger and better thanks for sharing all your knowledge in 23 looking forward to what your bring to the table this year
Course content: recovering when things to wrong--either by your own doing, someone else's or the material. Thanks!
Love the idea of the courses!!!
Courses that I am interested in:
- siding, with different types
- computer desks
- how to design it, including joinery and what consequences of different wood selections would be
- how to build it
- kitchen table builds
- chair builds
- chair repairs, both structural and finish. What is "too broken" to be worthwhile to fix? Upholstery
- couch/chair upholstery - DIY or find somebody?
- wood repair - my dog chewed on various wood articles (banister end, cabinets)
- baseboard repair - the part by the shower took a beating and needs to be refinished badly, but how?
- kitchen wood floor is made of "engineered wood", and the finish is flaking off, and needs to be refinished, but the top veneer is so thin that a big 12-20" industrial sander would go through the top veneers (which have hand carving marks to boot). How to this repair properly, gently and thoroughly; hopefully while using power tools to save time?
Per your request for suggestions of topics: How to properly join wood materials-gluing up boards-pocket hole jigs-when to use dowels-domino joints-biscuits-etc. Thanks in advance for using your time and talents to further the trades😊
I second that request
Third
I’m a 59 Woman getting ready to semi retire and this is what I want to learn. Thank you for all you do.😊
Best of luck, Trish!
Hey Ethan I will definitely look for your 101. You've been clear, right and honest on lots of topics. And I agree with your professional assessment: Structure. Thank you sir, Happy New Year to you and yours.
I'm seriously torn. Half of me is going, "This is going to be amazing". The other half is going " Nooooooooo!!" Iced enjoyed all your videos. I'm no stranger to a shop or construction site myself but you still manage to teach me stuff. I love what you are doing! I'll look for you on the other side.

Love your content! Happy New Year!
Best of luck in the new year! Can’t wait to see your course!
Another topic I thinks would be helpful is “fasteners”. A few years back I took on a project with friends to install new siding on one side of my house. How hard could it be? As it turned out, it was pretty challenging. The worst part was when the inspector came out, he failed it, in part because we used screws vs the required nails. Surely screws would hold better! We had neglected to consider the sheer strength issue.
There was also an issue because the wall was inexplicably 8’4” tall, and of course we used 8’ panels, and planned to just cover the gap. That didn’t fly either, blocking was required. So I had to take it all down, then hire a professional to it right. It was a major debacle, especially with the hard work we did out in the hot Sierra sun on the deck.
Anyway, some instruction about fasteners for various kinds of projects (from small woodworking projects to structural, eg a woodshed) would be helpful if you can fit it in. 😎
Thank you so much for the information you have shared with me! Happy New Year!
Can’t wait! Thanks for doing it.
At some point talking about when you need to have an inspection done and how to go about getting one done will be an important subject to tackle.
In medical school they have a saying, "See it. Do it. Teach it." You seem to be following a similar trajectory and we followers benefit as a result. Best wishes for success in your new chapter !
😄🙏
Happy New Year
Thanks

Most projects have an aesthetic aspect (not strictly utilitarian) so in addition to structure some mention of DESIGN choices (eg, cabinet faces, corner options). Doing so intro course could offer tease for advanced course… that is, not full ‘how to’ but merely ideas for more attractive or multifunctional result.
Thanks for all the great tips.
Thank you for all your wonderful work. I have learned much from what you presented in an articulate and simple ( for my understanding) manner. Good luck in the future!

I'm always overwhelmed when it comes to what types of fasteners/screws/hardware to use for a specific project. This results in multiple trips to the box stores for these items. So looking forward to your Fastener course!
Covering that stuff in detail Darren!
Bravo Ethan!! …. you go boy ! …… I’ll be waiting with baited breath….. be well in this new year

I absolutely love your channel and I am slowly acquiring good tools. This year I need to build raised plant beds with a wide board on top so I can sit while gardening. I also want to add faux stone to my fireplace wall and change mantel to a thick beam. Ty!
Good luck to you in the new effort.
Sounds like a good plan. Best of luck.
