Thank you for this. From my late father who was a carpenter, I inherited a DeWalt cordless drill that has a defective battery pack. Now I know how to repair it.
If have quite a few various brand cordless power tools from my late father which I have been cleaning up and checking them out during this lockdown period. I have loads of different Nicd and Nimh batteries all mostly working very/extremely well but a couple that need some attention. This video is very helpful to me. Thank you!
You have a natural way, of explaining. one of the best explanatory video's I have seen. your like Donny the lawnmower doctor. well done, I tip my hat to you.
I MANAGE TO RECYCLE 2DOZEN SET OF BATTERY AND EARN SOME POKET MONEY TOO.THANK YOU BRO.ITS VERY HELPFUL..I HAVE DONE THE RIGHT WAY.AND THEY KEEP SENDING MORE BATTERY TO GIVE ANEW LIFE.
I've tried this quite a few times. It's OK if you're super desperate and live out in the middle of nowhere. I always end up buying new replacement packs on eBay for around $15. Buying a sub-C size battery with welded solder tabs hasn't been good for me because the pack cells always seem to be just slightly smaller and there's no spare room, so you need another failed pack to pull from. I've tried this method with 18650 laptop battery packs, too, and it's just not worth the effort (lots of delicate charging circuitry in laptop packs). I've had some luck scavenging from the battery recycle bin at the Lowe's store and also pulling high-quality solder-tab 18650's from old laptop packs (peel off the tabs, file the weld points). You might also try just going around the faulty cell with wire -- you'll only lose a fraction of the total capacity, and a good charger should be designed to accommodate the change. Just check pack and charger for overheating while charging.
Great information, thanks. I have older Bosch 14,4v NiMh drill and driver that are in good shape but batteries that don't put out. Replacement batteries are more than replacement drills!
Thanks for the information as I have 3 packs that need repairs. I can probably sacrifice one battery pack to get the other two back working again and then see about either making a pack with new batteries. Great ideas.
Yes you can do a repair like this but when the nimh batteries are too far gone to bother with, I find using cheap 18650 cells are a great way to keep that old cordless drill going.
There are several factors in getting a good result. One resource I found which successfully combines these is the Magic Mender Wizard (check it out on google) without a doubt the no.1 info that I have ever heard of. Check out this unbelievable site.
Are those c cells or sub c cells? If the battery is leaking it needs to be replaced. It can NOT rejuvenated. Also look fro bulged batteries. these are also bad batteries and may explode if you keep trying to charge them.
I recently got the EZ Battery Reconditioning program and just reconditioned two car batteries. The guides were very easy to follow [Check Details Here==> t.co/YpdloYO92F ]. I wish I would have found this years ago! Thanks!?
Thank you my friend, that was awsome and very simple with a great explanation even a dumber like me could understand, I will be doing this with confidence.
Thanks and I think you could use normal even cheaper and better rechargeable cells like AAA, AA the right size ones I am not sure 🤔 but I think somewhat like A3 for this model
It's the thermistor temperature sensor. It switches off the charger when the cells start getting warm - ie when fully charged and are dissipating charge current as heat. It's safe to use this method only with NiCad cells
individual cells from your non- working full set of batteries and from non-working individual multi cell batteries................. What strikes me strongly here is that professional battery restoring or exchanging batteries never use a soldering or pencil iron to connect the batteries. They have a Quickflash soldering device which heats up VERY rapidly but doesn't touch the batteries long enough to destroy the individual cells as do the high heat soldering irons and guns which would linger too long on the soldering connection and to get high. This heat generally destroys the new cell .The only answer is to do as the battery stores do and use a flash soldering gun. The temperature is high enough to perform good soldering but doesn't last long enough to destroy the cell itself. I have seen people buy the brand new cells and the heat destroys any cells that are exposed to the pencil's soldering iron's gun's heat whenever soldering is used. The cell becomes ruined due to the temperature. I'd be very wary of somebody who attempts to join these types of cells by a conventional soldering iron or soldering gun. You are likely to destroy the new cell However the SOLDERING would work great and is easy if you have the calibrated exacting flash soldering electronic device that the stores have.AND THE BATTERIES ARE NEW! Using a pencil solderer, Its heat is very high and can solder well .But the length of time the heat is used to melt the solder, the greater risk there is to destroy the battery cell.
The Heat of a soldering gun or iron may very well destroy the batteries. Professional battery replacement establishments use of very rapid flash welding in order not to injure the batteries. I would not risk using the method you described.
What are you risking? A €3 euro cell? A battery that's done for anyway?. ONE replacement 14.4v NiMh battery for a perfectly good Bosch drill/driver costs €313 where I live.
i am in use to replace or build battery pack using this method since many years ago and never had a problem, built a lot of pack for my hely and airplane...dont believe what other ppl suggest, often only for sell new batteries: moreover i recharge standard batteries ....never had problems
You must work for a professional battery restoration shop. Anyone with ability with a soldering iron can easily do this without overheating the battery, This man was very skilled with his solder and did not hurt the batteries.
No, you're risking ruining the new battery when you attempt to solder it. The thing is tho, if one knows what he/she is doing, it can be an easy fix....
Learning more about electronics via DIYing projects.... why does he want 20-21 volt reading on voltmeter when the batteries show 18v? Can someone explain this? Thanks
The nominal voltage of each of this cells is 1.2V, but the máx. Voltage is 1.5V (he says 1.4V), you múltiplo it by the amount of cells in the battery pack (I think there were 15), and since they are connected in serial you get a reading of 21V

No matter which, the process works for both. NiMH are better however, just don't ever replace NiCd cells with NiMH cells unless changing ALL of them at once, they do not charge properly otherwise. If you have TWO NiCd batteries and BOTH are sort of charging but not fully, replace ALL the NiCd cells in ONE battery with NiMH and hopefully find enough GOOD cells in total to make another good battery of NiCd cells. I have done this several times on all sorts of drills with pretty good success. Even if you are one or two NiCd cells short you can just buy a few new ones. I have even converted old 12v NiCd batteries to 18V NiMH batteries (of the same case type) with great success. There is a great video on UA-cam of a guy (Russian I think) who does a superb job of replacing NiCd cells with Lipo cells in a Bosh drill, including power check meter built in! That's MY next project. Do a search for it.

Just like a pro. I'd never know you did work inside that battery pack. Nice!

you can also just invert the defective sub-c cell... since it's ground already, it'll work just fine. result in a lower voltage pack but... works
Great information, thanks. I have older Bosch 14,4v NiMh drill and driver that are in good shape but batteries that don't put out. Replacement batteries are more than replacement drills!

HI that was very good .It has repaired 3 of my battery pack,s. for £10. Thanks David.
You check the voltage of the damaged battery while it is connected to the other, miracle.
Thanks for the information as I have 3 packs that need repairs. I can probably sacrifice one battery pack to get the other two back working again and then see about either making a pack with new batteries. Great ideas.
amazing video I love it so much, just a very little correction it's 15 cells x 1.4=21 not 50 lol
it is the case for most "dead" nimh battery pack? does it work also for nicd? great video!
Nice. I'll check mine although it is 13 years old.
great job. never thought about changing the batteries. thanks
I would rather use a spot welder than solder because heat from the soldering iron may damage the battery
Good tip. Not many things are repairable anymore.
If we kept repairing items, the manufacturers would go out of business.
How long did it last this repair :)?
not very long.
Is there any purpose for the red and black foam/paper wrapping the cells other than cushion?
how many amps is your soldering iron? good information, thanks.
That Would be watts, .. not amps
Excellent video. Great job. Will do this as well once I experience this symptom. Thanks!

Great! Thanks for this video.I must chance some battery for my drill.
Hi! Can you do video with bosch 5ah 18v and Hitli 22v batteries repair?
And name tools for repairing it? Thank you
good job sir mabuhay!
I'm struggling to find 1.2v ni cd 2500mha battery for battery fix....can I use ni-cd 2000mah for the 3 I'm replacing?
He made it look very easy, don't count on it
Hello there. How do I measure the capacity of each of these batteries? I think it's done with a charge discharge. What is your method?
How to buy a battery with the same size & also how many watts is your soldering iron

I have a cordless drill with the same battery pack I want to upgrade to li-ion battery
Any circuit diagrams available
You can also invert the defective cells in the pack if you don't have a replacement... it will result in a less voltage pack but still works...
My B&D cost me $8 for new cells, plus the satisfaction of not paying $24 for a new pack.
Thank you,
How I can find new battery , what‘s the name and price?
Thanks.
Where to buy nimh cells?
Thanks for the video. I had no idea you could do this...
Hello,
Can you give me directions on the data of the battery cells that you used? I have the same problem and I would do the same job.
Silvano Marino search from ebay or aliexpress sub c and needed mAh. Those all are 1,2V
'
better use R/C battery NIMH with 3000mah in the a pack of cordless drill...
much more easily...
old battery corrosion in the recycleable

I have a Makita PA18 18v 1.3Ah, can you tell me what cells and where to get these cells replacement in UK? Cheers
This is what I need to know can anyone help.
Your batteries are ni-cd. First open drill battery and read informations on the batteries
Thanks for the great video. Very well done. Subscribed.
nice, can you do vid on li ion batt ? ta

I can’t remember how things go back together...I can take it apart.
Can I test my ni-cd battery capacity without buying that overpriced balance charger?
Very good tip.
what is the loose black wire in the pack.

excellent video tutorial
i agree --- Thank You very nice video
Thanks for the tip!
without spot welder it is dangerous to try to solder old battery. with overheat it can explode and its life is shortened anyway. good try though.
My battery died as a result of getting wet. Is there anything to be done about that?
Yes. Do has the video says. Check each cell for voltage.
ou les acheté les piles de remplacement merci
very good vieo. Thank you.
what are the small black wires for ?
Usually indicates negative connection. Also to connect terminals.
i would say it's a thermistor. if battery is too hot, it wont charge till it cools down. heat is very unpleasant for batteries
