- Just wait till you “C” this! In today’s episode of Retro Renew, we’re going to take a closer look at one of RetroSix’s new products for the Sega Game Gear! This is the CleanPower GG Mod which adds USB-C capability to the Game Gear console. A lot of the issues that aging Game Gears suffer from can stem from the consoles main power board PCB. Issues like leaking electrolytic capacitors or a faulty IC can render the unit unplayable. This simple drop in solution from RetroSix is a fantastic way to get your Game Gear up and running again!

Glad the GG is starting to get some love. I've had one I've been wanting to restore for ages. The GG was my first portable console and I only had two games for it, so I can't wait to get an everdrive and start repairing and modding this one.

Thanks! I'm a huge GG fan and just ordered. I molded an old battery backup solution by adding a battery meant for an RC car into that old tube but with some slight mods it works well. Still this is great.

Sega being my all-time favorite because of the Genesis, sadly never had a Game Gear but the daycare I went to did. Rethinking my choices of dropping $80 on a mint condition GBA. They are dirt cheap to buy if they haven't been recapped. Their screens are awful and make it borderline unplayable. I'm waiting for a cheaper and easier solution than mcwill

This is pretty badass. Someone should do a mod upgrade to the Game Gear Rechargable Battery Pack to go with this.
The Sega Game gear is my favorite portable console and I have many of them, I have modified some, a solution to this is that they sell some voltage amplifier USB cables that amplify from 5v to 9v and 12v, I recommend the 12v one that works very well , The only bad thing is that the USB gets very hot, as I had told you in the video of the Sega nomad I am still looking forward to the mod of the screen of this great console, thanks for this excellent video.

Very cool mod, GG really deserved this upgrade, stock power pcb is lousy and it wasn’t worth the effort to carry the bulky power brick around.

I'm getting this for my game gear I've recapped it with the kit you showed on your channel the ceramic caps kit next is a third party lcd screen for the game gear (UPDATE): I've installed this mod into my game gear and works better plus tomorrow I'm getting a 3rd party mcwill lcd kit I'm so happy about it

For battery charging, it would be nice of they add a toggle switch. Then you can stop the charging when the batteries are full. Better for their lifetime span. Anyways, great job on the developers and thanks for sharing!

Awesome mod, we need more USB-C mod, for DS and PSP for exemple.
Something that can be cool with the Game Gear is make a replacement of the VGA Mod by a USB-C mod or a mini HDMI mod for video output. VGA is good... But not modern if you see what I want to say.

@iVirtualPlays I see the point, my point is more about a Universal connector, so you don't have to think about have a DS AC adaptator... When one of the 3 DS AC Adaptaor 😅.
One thing I'd love is this combined with a video out mod so you could plug the GameGear into any number of USB-C-based docks that have power delivery as well as HDMI or Display Port output.

Just a thought, based off of something I noticed last video... If you use a static screen saver on your monitors, your cuts will looks less jarring and more professional because the elapsing time isn't obvious.

Need lipo batteries that fit into the battery slots. Replacement screen that is cheaper than mcwill. Maybe a slimmer case for it since it won't need a backlight tube.

One drawback is that you can no longer use the official Sega battery packs. As someone who owns the better of the two, aka the one that attaches to the back, this mod means that I would need to mod the pack to work with it.
This would be a really good mod for a console mod of the game gear that has the RGB out mod and the controller mod with it

Hello, if instead of batteries, place 2 ps3 control batteries and connect the type C connector, this would proceed to charge the batteries as if they were batteries?

I bought this part recently and the black cover that goes around the usb-c was 3d printed to where you could see the print lines. Not as "clean" as the part he shows.
FYI Ikea Ladda batteries are rebadged eneloop Pro batteries so get them they are much cheaper.

So I've got this one on order, but debating whether or not to do a Lipo Mod as well. What are your thoughts on that? I've got a fully custom Gear already, and LiPo would be the last upgrade. But just curious if you have any plans on doing it.

Yes that is correct, there is no change with how you can use the batteries.
Wish they made something similar for the nomad or if someone can release an IPS kit for it too. I know you can use the RGB board with an IPS screen but it’s a complicated install and the parts are expensive and hard to find

DANG!! I can’t keep up! Just McWill modded my 2nd Game Gear this week! I’m looking into upscalers now to get the VGA out working in my tv (only works on computer screen). The OSSC seems the best lag-free option. And i want to add the pixlx mod from videogameperfection.com to add controllers. My goal is 2 consolized GG’s and play gear-to-gear on 2 tv’s, with the link cable. Both are recapped, but one GG has minor issues. When moving it too much it shuts down/loses power. So i’ll definitely pick up this mod at one point!

Do you think this same mod could work on the Sega Nomad? Since the Game Gear and Nomad share the same power cable DC port.
Unfortunately this mod won’t work on the nomad because the nomad has the power integrated on the main motherboard. It’s not a discrete board like the Game Gear. Great question super nova! Cheers!

Not at the moment, the 2 mods that I know of use TFT technology. I wouldn’t be surprised if perhaps FunnyPlaying or other companies are working on something. That would be awesome!! Fingers crossed Madblaster!

Wow! Pretty much just a drop-in replacement. Then, he tops it off by using a USB power bank like I used to use a GameBoy power pack back in the day.

Ok, so we can give it USB-C,
change out the light bulb for an backlit LCD,
now we need to mod it so we can charge a dual Li-Po kit (that we haven't made yet) in the battery compartments.
I know it can be consolized, so maybe that can get a fancy custom built all-in-one dock...

Can you still plug the type-C in with and game genie? I can barely plug in the barrel plug with the game genie on

@@MachoNachoProductions from what i looked up there were at least two available kits before the one guy hasn't updated his page and just says out of stock and the other guy in the items description says that he was only making the one batch not making any more restock. seems like a cool idea for retro game repair shop to do or similar stores but I've only just gotten into modding my gba sp and the community so idk if there's a specific reason they dont.
and not to say anything like the game gear shouldn't have gotten this mod and whatever I just grew up with the gba and the sp and I've never heard of the gamer gear until I've gotten into retro stuff
Just got a ps1 in the mail that works and is is great condition for only $10 I have 8 gba IPS (v2) mods that I'm currently working on right now and one DMG ips display mod as well but I want to use a new shell instead of my good condition old one

Can you still use it on normal batteries on the go?
You absolutely can! It works very similarly to the original power board. It can run off normal batteries and you can also plug it in at the same time and it will run off the usb-c. Very versatile kit. Cheers!
It lost me at no recharging batteries. This would be perfect other wise. I have LED modded a couple GameGears and would love a cheaper lcd replacement and rechargeable batteries inside would make for a great experience

@@MachoNachoProductions I saw that on there sight so I’ll wait until Next year. I have 2 game gears currently one works perfect with the led back light mod but the other one the video stoped recently long after it was recapped so I may just try one of these power mods on it so see if it fixes it but even if it doesn’t I’ll eventually put in a screen before selling it off. Yah the lack of charging is a big missed opportunity in my opinion. But I’ll be keeping my eyes open for the next version with charging capability.
Let hope they can make it dual purpose so it can chart multiplayer types of rechargeable batteries.

Charging NiMH batteries process is different than LI-ion or Li-Poli batteries. Charging threw device will kill those batteries in few days.
This is why devices using AA rechargables never provide charging by power adapter.
But... is it also a rechargeable batteries charger?
Unfortunately it isn’t. That was one of the cons I listed in the video. It would have been awesome if it charged my eneloop nickel metal hydride batteries. RetroSix is working on a battery solution for the game gear so that’s exciting! Cheers!
