The 2004 and 2005 are nicknamed the widow maker because it's a true race bike. It's got the wheel base of a 600 with 1000 power. It's a light bike 425 lbs with about 170 180 back wheel hp. It's an absolute beast.
Just picked one up. It's feels like a damn 600 how light it is. But that torque is blissful. The bike looks really sexy in person... Especially from the back. To whoever reads this, debating whether to buy the bike due to conflicting feelings on it's looks... It'll blow you away in person.
I had one back when they were new out, at the time it was something else. Coming from older R1’s and the like it was a big jump in performance. They were certainly a big step up for Kawasaki’s top sports bike that’s for sure! Can’t remember what kawa had topping the range before but possibly the zx9r? that was more of a sports tourer than out & out sports bike. The prev zx10 label belonged to an old relic of a Kawasaki so it was great times when it was released. To my mind it’ll be a classic and for me it started the next gen type of superbike. Funny thing, the price of modern bikes is so great these are probably similar money today (for a nice 2004 model) as I sold mine for nearly 15 years ago. I remember buying a brand new R6 in 2001 for £5700, sounds cheap nowadays. Enjoy!

Reviewers at the time said this "widow maker" was mental, so I bought my 2004 ZX10R out of the box to find out. They were right. I loved this bike because of it. No electronic aids - just raw power, you, the bike, and the road. It could do 165km/h+ in 1st gear. Fortunately my wife did not become a widow.
Hi lammy I once owned a 2008 zx10 which was lovely but my business went down the tubes and rather than go bankrupt I sold up and paid everyone off only to have a few thousand left but a clear conscience. After that I bought a zx9r for £1,000 and it's awesome. I don't know whether I prefer it to the ZX10, but it's just as good for me.

@@fzr1000981 Yeah very common in the 04-early 05. Fixed in later 05's. I had about 6 cracked, 2 of which were really damaged. I think this issue mainly arises with redline abuse though. I only replaced all the bad ones with the updated retainers and now have 105k miles on the engine no further issues. Any owner needs to check this immediately because you won't know they're damaged until they let loose which would be catastrophic obviously. Jeez I only put 30k miles in for years, seriously slacking lol.

I tracked mine this year, rode inters and could keep up with pretty much anything in my sessions.. I've upgraded the weak spots, Nitron NR2 rear, 320 mil Brembo Discs, R1 calipers, sticky Michelins and a set of Carbon Ceramic pads, some tool !
Went to look at a Zx12r local yesterday. It was immaculate! He also had a 04’ zx10r and a rc51. All were black/charcoal gray and immaculate!! I was drooling 🤤 and didn’t want to leave!! Love this era of bikes!!
It’s one of the most exciting bikes I’ve ridden…. I found a 2004 with all the problems of the Standard bike fixed …. Brembos back and Front Power commander Full Akropovic system Michelin Powers RS ECU Faker (no restrictions) the ECU faker tells the bike it’s 5th gear constantly) And of course K&N filter Not sure how much the bike makes at the makes at the rear wheel but I rode a a zx10r (2011) and mine felt quicker some how especially at the top end, it really is fast even in today Standards, very lively bike. And yes you can use all that power…. I live in Germany with many Autobahns with no speed restrictions. I’ve done 299km many times and came off the gas and it take few seconds before dash even moved from 299kmh and it will do that speed in 5th 😂 Very fast bike und under estimated.
She was considered a Widow maker because of the raw power she made and all of the amateur riders who thought they were the sh!t. She was to be treated with respect or she would out right kill you..Absolutely a beautiful bike and I was looking to get one before I got my 09.
I have the 06, zzr1400 calipers, race fit side exit can, decat, 08 swingarm, bought it new and its still sooo fast, ridden a lot of newer stuff, MV f4 , S1000rr, RSv4 but just couldn't justify the extra cost, have ridden the k5 gsxr but the ZX just feels more alive and raw.
I have an 06 and these bikes are a blast. 160kmh in first gear and pops the front end up when you shift to 2nd. I’ve even had it wheelie shifting into 3rd. 0-299 really quick.
Off the Rev limiter in 1st gear my 04 would indicate 108mph! Guess the clocks would be out a bit but even so. That’s stuck with me for 15 years (as I had one when they first came out). I loved mine and even to this day still look at them on eBay.
I own a 04 zx10 and love it!! 44k miles and still running strong, pushing for 100k. Put a Scotts steering stabilizer on and punch it, helps with the tank slap issue. Thanks for this review, excellent work. -Ninjasan
I’ve been looking for years and years for one that hasn’t been modified and completely original in Kawasaki green of course and I’ve finally found one and placed a deposit on it, in immaculate as new condition 7k miles all history 2owners
My first new bike was a 2004 ZX6R 636, same color and a lot of the styling and gauges remind me of that bike. I ended up putting 25,000 trouble free miles on it before selling it. It never gave me any trouble and the valves were always in spec. I’m definitely a Kawasaki man. I raced KX’s in my teens and my first sport bike was a ‘95 ZX6R. I’m a little older now so I own a Z1000. I couldn’t imagine a ZX10r because the Z1000 is plenty for everything I throw at it. Going from the ZX6R to a Z1000 my favorite thing is the low end and midrange. You had to wring out the ZX6R whereas the Z1000 starts pulling at 3-4k and at 7k it’s pulling really well
I had a Daytona 675 and bought a 2007 Z1000. Gotta agree on the power and torque. I fitted a different one tooth sprocket so it now cruises easily at 80-90 without screaming it's balls off.
Had mine since 7th April 2005 a birthday gift from my dear friend who died of cancer, still as clean now, 36000 miles and 157bhp on the dyno, runs perfectly, don’t think I’ll ever part with it, after all this time it still puts a stupid grin on my face when I crack the throttle open.
I currently have a C1 model with a full SATO system (ebay £250) a powercommander a BMC filter and a bit of dyno work and its putting out 173.67 bhpat the wheel and with a tooth down t front and 1 up on the rear this thing clutches up at 100mph in 4TH GEAR and before anyone starts saying no way go and have a shot of a mildly tuned C1?2, stick a damper on 1 of these and they can live with anything.
Use to swap between this ZX10 and the K5 Gixxer on my lunch breaks back in 2005 when I worked for a dealership. I'm a die hard gixxer boy but will always have a soft spot for the ZX10, the 04/05 models in particular. Definitely not for beginners!
Listen if you take care of it,it will last bought my blue 2008 new never adjusted any valves tuned it up 3 times......it has 97,400 miles on it!!!I drive it every chance i get!Runs like a dream!!!!❤

I got mine in early August. What a mental machine! Green with Akra pipe. Went over 200 on it 5 min after buy, 280 within first week and saw 299 on the clock within first month of ownership. Meanwhile, caught a wheelspin twice in wet, and once locked front wheel on a hard downhill braking on a very cold day. Ironically, there was barely a scratch on it, until I tipped it over at a standstill by not fully extending the kickstand. (PALMFACE) I am so in love with this machine, it's so manly, no rider gimmics of any kind, not even ABS! It's going to stay with me for a while, thats for sure. A good replacement for my malfunctioning attemps at a solid relationship LOL! Looks still very good, and sounds f****** amazing. I'm sure this machine is even at its age still a better bike than many current ones. She's getting a titanium retainers as a preventative maintenance before next screaming season! I had a 2004 ZX-10R and my 2 biggest complaints about it are not much dash info and VERY uncomfortable riding position (very hard on my wrists). Power was a lot of fun as there was a huge rush of it at about 8K RPMs. I had mine "geared" perfectly for doing 60 MPH to 100 MPH in about 2 seconds. Stock sprockets were 17-39 (525 chain) I think but I ran 18-50 instead (520 chain). Its greatest asset is the light weight. The bike would accelerate hard, not only due to the stout 150 rear wheel peak ponies (mine was checked on a dyno), but also because it was only around 400 pounds ready to ride. A fun bike but so are 600s and 750s which are cheaper. $4K for 1000, $3K for 750, $2K for 600 (all early to mid 2000 vintage).
David James You 100% get used to the riding position. I remember when I first got the bike, my hands would go numb after 10 minutes. Now I can ride it for hours with no issue.

One of the great things about the earlier 1000s (and others) - they're still straight-forward enough to fix at home ... No valve spring retainers issues?

Brembos back and Front
Power commander
Full Akropovic system
Michelin Powers RS
ECU Faker (no restrictions) the ECU faker tells the bike it’s 5th gear constantly)
And of course K&N filter
Not sure how much the bike makes at the makes at the rear wheel but I rode a a zx10r (2011) and mine felt quicker some how especially at the top end, it really is fast even in today Standards, very lively bike. And yes you can use all that power…. I live in Germany with many Autobahns with no speed restrictions. I’ve done 299km many times and came off the gas and it take few seconds before dash even moved from 299kmh and it will do that speed in 5th 😂 Very fast bike und under estimated.
Mine dynoed at 165 with akro and power commander
I have the same exact bike and i love it!!!
Same color, everyone thinks she's much younger.
Ahhh rode a 2005 zx10 for 7/8 years.. from 8000 rpm it's a nutter.
I own a 04 zx10 and love it!! 44k miles and still running strong, pushing for 100k. Put a Scotts steering stabilizer on and punch it, helps with the tank slap issue. Thanks for this review, excellent work.

No valve spring retainer issues?
I’ve been looking for years and years for one that hasn’t been modified and completely original in Kawasaki green of course and I’ve finally found one and placed a deposit on it, in immaculate as new condition 7k miles all history 2owners
Nice find. 👍🏼 One day I'll have that bike. something about the 04 man.
I just got an 05 with power commander V, power shifter and Ohllins steering stem. Great bike, looks great, lots of power
My 04 had a Scott stabilizer, bike felt so much better then without.

Use to swap between this ZX10 and the K5 Gixxer on my lunch breaks back in 2005 when I worked for a dealership. I'm a die hard gixxer boy but will always have a soft spot for the ZX10, the 04/05 models in particular. Definitely not for beginners!

I'm a new rider & I have the same gen 1 zx10r. I love it. When we get a lil open road I can get loose with ther best of them.
David James
You 100% get used to the riding position. I remember when I first got the bike, my hands would go numb after 10 minutes. Now I can ride it for hours with no issue.
@thegatesofsleep - I never experienced getting used to it and I had mine for about a year. Speak for yourself.

@thegatesofsleep - about 90% of that.

I own an 04 ZX10R with 30k kms on it. Has been meticlously maintained its whole life. It's been to the track and put much later model bikes to shame.
How reliable would you say it’s been
I give a tough time to a new model gxir 15 and others
The one your on is no longer a window maker because it now has a steering damper/stabiliser and that was the issue. The 05 is also quicker than a gen 4 10r. The brakes? Yep they’re good but they’re not the stock calipers as the stock ones were poopoo
Without the damper my front end is all over the place
An 05 is not quicker than a gen 4. Mine just put down 196 to the rear wheel.
jalthaus but your gen 4 weighs more
You are my son. Choose the dark side my son. Finance and never let go.
New to your channel really love your review thinking of buying zx10r or 600rr both in same budget. Anyway you have awesome bane style voice @ 3:10 best of luck.
Thanks Asimz, oh I thought I sounded more like BatMan, "Im BatMan" yeah much more like Batman :-) Good luck with whatever bike you get both those are cracking bikes!
My go to channel that always makes sense 👌
Love all the videos chops 👌🤓😎
True that. My ZX-6R 2005 is actually appreciating in value. I could sell it for about £800 more than I bought it for at the moment!
I recently bought an immaculate K3 1000, £2k worth of toys on it; wont loose any value as I paid £3.5k. Insurance not bad at all as it is also considered a classic now.
yes thats the other big thing with these older bikes some companies will insure them as classics now! Sounds like the K3 was a bargain!!
Hello! I'm thinking about the 05' zx10 or a r1 rn12... What bike feels better, is more reliable and also... Which is better to ride with a girl...
The zx10 is more reliable and more comfortable. I've had a 07 r1 and currently have a 05 zx10. Zx10 by far
Zx10 r the 06 07 is lil better suspension wise. I have tried both Set ups. Track 05 tubes are lil better street 06 07 is much better on the road. Handles big bumps. Better
Thats it im getting one 😊
I’ll sell you mine
This video is the best video that shows all about a bike like mine...But mine not seen any action...It's just wating for the luckey buyer...If anyone knows where a ZX10R is cheaper with less millage and nicer go and buy it...I haven't seen any for what Im saling Im only sale he bike cause The seating set up kills my back...Yes its the only reason...I like to ride long distances now...typing between stop lights probally miss spelled ya get the point...
