I think the saddest thing about this story is the fact is that truely, he really died as a baby, the creatures counldn't take care of him, so he turned into a ghost/spirt like them, that just wondered. He never really lived a human life, he never got that chance.
YES 2024 NOW. Been years since I last watched this movie. On a different perspective, I think the guy understands that this can't keep on forever so in that note, that kid is his way of finishing this. You can argue that he could've held or kiss the girl but that will only leave trauma. So, he used the opportunity to save the kid to finally finish his existence on a high note and have the best memory be his last and finally free the girl from him as he is aware of the love. No more summers together, no more pain. And to the writer, I had a similar past when I lost my ex-gf due to her having a disease. We've known each other since grade school and I finally confessed when I found out we'll be attending the same high school. We' attended the same uni as well and everything ended on our 1st year 2nd semester. That was 2013. We watched it first when it got released and I watched it one last time 2 months after her burial. That's the reason I only watched this movie twice since it keeps reminding me of the pain. So I gave it a one last hug by visiting her grave for the last time before we moved to a different city 323.7km away. Now as I am randomly scrolling on this alt account, I came across this video and I think it's time for me to visit the town. To the place that gave me the most happiness and pain. If you're still reading this, there are comments as how painful it is that the person you made memories with became the memory. Sometimes, my mind gives me this alternate ending wherein Gin and Hotaru spend their years together until Hotaru grows old. Gin stayed by her side until her last breath and that’s when Gin touch Hotaru for the first and last time and disappeared. Then they will be both reincarnated, meet again, have a normal life and a happy ending. I’ll never get over how this anime made me feel and how I’ll never get tired watching this AMV.

Sometimes, my mind gives me this alternate ending wherein Gin and Hotaru spend their years together until Hotaru grows old. Gin stayed by her side until her last breath and that’s when Gin touch Hotaru for the first and last time and disappeared. Then they will be both reincarnated, meet again, have a normal life and a happy ending. I’ll never get over how this anime made me feel and how I’ll never get tired watching this AMV.
